Well is there a significant difference 5,400 RPM vs 7,200 RPM???

    Will I actually see any??

I'll tell you what I do with my laptop

I watch movies, I game once in awhile.
I have a lot of music. so the extra 70GB should definitely be worth my while. plus i store a lot of movies.. etc

Also I was planning on recording music onto my laptop running Reason and ProTools with a keyboard. so does the 5,400 RPM suffice??

--Hasham --I wasn't aware that the Hard Drives were expandable on laptops. I always thought laptops can only expand the memory. You said yours contains the Western Digital? what size?

It does benefit to live in the U.S. sometimes! perhaps not right now with the recession going on. seems that everything is just collapsing!.. =/ Just out of curiosity, how much did you spend on your rig? in US dollars!

    Thanks in Advance.

My Friends, Please advise me with this: If I ordered T9600 (2.80GHz) with 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT I believe I will have heating issues. That would be perfect system but If I probably see and heating issues I'm going to return it right away. And I will get 256 GPU since I am not gamer.

    Any comments?

I bought mine for $1624. Mine is 320gb WD HDD. I bought it from Saudi instead of UK due to the fact I was on holiday here and the pre-configured dv5ts in UK donot have the 2.53Ghz processor and 320GB HD, so I got myself a gud bargain buying from Saudi instead of UK for like 20-30GBP cheaper.

Heat wont be much of a concern if u use the Zalman NC200 cooler or raise the back of the laptop by an inch or so.

I have the cooler and it idles at 43c and whn watching a movie or so goes up to 47-40c.

While gaming it goes up to 75-80c. All these temp r with the cooler, without the cooler temp wud be like 5-8c higher.

So its upto u if u can live with tht much temp go for it and it will be a gud gaming machine, I went for it and I am loving it, dont even recognise the heat due to the cooler.

Thanks for the link, it definitely gave me something to think about. Of course the fact that I use Cisco VPN just made it one more solid reason to stick with 32 bit (though I recognize that this is unlikely to be the case for most of the other people debating).

    Thanks Hashham.

The problem is that I won't use a cooler due to using portable laser mouse at the side of computer. I have lap desk big enough to use mouse at the side. Hopefully it won't be so hot...........

A notebook cooler sits directly under the computer, so there shouldn't be any issue with room for your mouse.

That said, you won't have any heat issues with the 9600 gt if you're just running normal windows applications.

Mine only heats up while gaming, and it is significantly less hot than my former acer travelmate, and also the dell I had before that.

Don't let the hyperbole about heat get to you. The dv5t really doesn't run very hot compared to other notebooks with independent graphics.

64-bit was definitely smooth, but lack of VPN support, plus trouble recognizing my palm device (yes, I know they're on their way out), led me to exchange my 64 bit for a 32 bit, even though I hate to lose my ~10% performance boost.

And now I've had all sorts of delays because they don't want to give me the same price on the "exchange", even though it is a $0 downgrade. (they even canceled the exchange wiothout telling me--i just saw it in my order history).

The replacement shipped today, so maybe i'll get it by the weekend, and then see if they honor their promise to credit the price difference "once it arrives."

I doubt there is any difference between those two drives. Neither are speed demons.

My recommendation would be not make a decision based on the 250GB drive.

However, I always suggest that users purchase a backup drive. Clone the original drive onto the 'backup' drive and then swap out. What you will then have is a very fast drive PLUS a HW backup in case you toast the OS. There's nothing more painful then reloading an OS and applications. I use cloned drives on all my PC's and they have saved me a lot of hours of grief. You can get very fast 250GB drives for under $70. Cheap insurance against a HW/SW crash. I listed the one I ordered in this thread.

When is the VPN driver supposed to be available? Is that for you work? I use VPN for my office laptop and it would be interesting to look into this option for my personal laptop.

Are there any VPN servers/services available "for hire" for general internet use?

Wheeeeeweww. I just finished reading EVERY post in this thread in preparation that I may be getting one of these. It took a fwe days to say the least. Made a few bookmarks from stuff that was linked as well.

To those of you having problems with the FF/REW, have you tried holding down the button rather than just pressing it? I know that on my home dvd players and my windvd that you have to hold down the button for it to not chapter skip.

I DON'T think the dv5t is compatible with DDR3 SODIM's. The DV5T uses 200 pin SODIM's and DDR3's are 204 pin. Check out this info:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SO-DIMM

FWIW, I think DDR3's are a couple of years off in terms of performance/price when compared to DDR2's.

Did you send the first one back before they sent you the new one? Or did you purchase another one, then send the first one back? In either case, i think you will have 21 days from when you receive it, on any laptop. For the 500$ coupon, you can try call them, but make sure you spent over 1399.99$.

To check if your card has been credited back you have to look at it through your own bank's website. Let's say you have bank of america, you have to sign in online to check if money was credit back to you. Or you can try call them and check. For the order status thing on the HP website, you have to input your order number that starts with H104 (or something close to that) and the phone number you put when you bought the item.

Don't worry about your old laptop. Once you get you're new one, just register that again under you name and you start fresh with the 1 year.

I am wondering if anyone has bought the Timbuk2 bag from HP and their DV5t fit in the laptop compartment? I recently received this bag from HP and my it won't fit. I didn't know if I received a defective bag or the DV5T truly doesn't fit in there.

yes, I use the Cisco VPN client to log in remotely to my company network. Cisco says they are not going to *ever* make a 64-bit version of the client I need.

I'm not sure if this is because they are betting on different VPN technologies. They do offer a 64-bit version of some other VPN client, which i forget the name of, but it does not support all of the same protocols as the one I need, and it will depend on your IT department's infrastructure if you can use it. (search on google for 64-bit cisco vpn client if you need details).

So when IT upgrades our infrastructure (not likely to happen soon), or I change jobs (more likely), then I'd definitely consider upgrading to 64 bit.

Anyone out there using the new Google Chrome browser with their dv5t? I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, but there's one problem.

The scroll on the touchpad scrolls down, but it won't scroll up. Touchpad works fine in other apps and browsers. Just seems like a problem in chrome. Any help would be great.

I'll try not to be so absent from here for so long. I'm missing tons of posts!

I'm completely impressed with the DV5T, but I'm also concerned about the heat. I'll use it like 7-9 hours a day, will I have problems with it? And also, while not gaming, heat becomes a problem, anyway? I've heard that the "case" gets really hot, like the place where you put your wrists, is that true? And finally, using a good cooler, doesn't it bother you guys when using the keyboard?

Well, that's all for now, thanks!

The case gets warm on idle, but gets pretty hot while gaming. A cooler doesn't bother ... why would it? It actually is better, it makes the angle more ergonomic.

i ordered mine with 64-bit and i did a clean install as soon as i got it with a 32-bit Vista because i dun have a 63-bit disc.

someone correct if im wrong, if u want to upgrade it to a 64-bit, u need a Vista 64-bit disc.

and guys, i bought a great backpack for the DV5T. i did a review and u can read all about it if ure interested.

It's a known issue, being worked on, and apparently has something to do with the synaptics driver.

I doubt it but you can always try. HP isn't in the business for swapping out computers. I suspect they'll do everything they can to not do a swap.

FWIW, I really like the standard res display. I think it's just about perfect for a 15" display and middle-aged eyes..

You can't upgrade unfortunately. Once that 21 days pass, no more exchanges or refunds, unless your laptop doesn't work. WSXGA+ screen is pure choice, but I myself having swapped the screens, I liked the WSXGA+ better.

First post - I've been reading this thread since page 1 - still have not pulled trigger but $500 coupon may allow me to go for it.

Question about the higher verses lower resolutions from the graphics card upgrade - I am 53 and don't have as good of eyes as I used to, current HP I use has the lower resolution which suits me about right, but I plan to get the dock and route to my 21" when home with this laptop, where I want and need the higher resolution. Will the lower resolution lappy's graphics card allow higher settings than the laptop display supports, for use thru the dock? Or do I have to get the higher resolution laptop screen to use that resolution on an external (non-lcd) tube?

    Thanks.

Just wondering... Will the heat be a problem when using this laptop for non gaming use (database, web surfing, pic editing) I have the 9600GT

Is anyone using one of the laptop cooling fans??? And is it necessary??
    something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834998051

I usually have my laptop sitting on my lap on top of a large hardback book (its a skinny book but is big enough that the laptop fits perfectly on it) so the fans in the comp. are not being blocked.

Well i visited tht website and it seems tht I will need to buy a full copy of a 64bit vista and there is no way I can simply upgrade my OS, I will have to do a clean install with a 64bit Vista DVD. This is so not good, unfortunate for me not living in US so tht I cud hv customised my laptop. I bought mine from Saudi Arabia, but also chkd UK and HP doesnt allow customisation, i dont get it why where on the other hand Dell allows to customise ur laptop in UK, HP shuid start allowing tht as well.

What I say is u need a cooler if u r gaming, coz the temp goes to 95c while in stress mode without cooler.
I used my laptop the other day on my lap watching a movie and temp went upto 55-58c coz there were times whn I was blocking the airflow.

As u stated tht u use a book on ur lap first which allows for airflow, u shud be ok with temps around 45-50c while using internet and photo editing etc.

I am not sure tht temps wud be wat I mentioned, im just guessing on it.

Shouldn't be without gaming, mine is still only a bit warm after 3 hours of the same sort of usage.

Though I have the slower 2.0 processor, maybe the faster ones cause it to heat up more. I have 9600GT and mid-range gaming still only runs a bit warm. Playing DVDs (and I'd guess playing games from the disk) do make it run a little hot though.

It seems to be just people that run the high end games with faster specs that get heating issues with this laptop.
