Hey guys I've recently purchased my dv5t and when it arrived the dvd-r drive was not reading any discs at all. I've started the exchange process, however when I checked my order status online, it appears as if my wireless was swapped. My original dv5t had a Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and my new order shows a "wireless-G card" Did anyone else have this problem before?
-
Hi, I have been trying to install Nvidia System Tools 6.02 on my dv5t. Everytime I try to install it, my laptop hangs, I have tried with the stock 175.86 drivers and also with the new 178.13 drivers, any ideas why does it happn.
Also once i got the installation through without any hangs, but thn whn i tried to open the Nvidia Control Panel or the Nvidia System Monitor, my laptop hangs
Can anyone pls help me out with this. Thanks. -

Got my DV5T today its beautiful and quiet, but it lagggggggggggs, when I transfer file from xternal USB drive to my lappy, or if i am uploading and downloading stuff, or installing stuff, open web page, chatting, have significant lag, to the point where some windows, whether it be IE, firefox or just file windows take quite a while it may say to close program or wait for program to respond, then it would work again.
Also on windows welcome center, that pop up quick with CPU, Windows info and Ram info but the 9600M GT would show up literally like 10 seconds later on the welcome center page... i had several laptop with 5400rpm HD befoer but never had one lag this bad or is it HD? any suggestions?.... I have uintsall all junk program, clean everything out, defrag it already.. slight improvement but still lag as i am this right now and the page would lag then respond again..
DV5T
P8600 2.4 ghz
4 GB ram
512mb 9600M GT
5400 RPM 250gb HD..
Dont think this spec should have any lag....at least no to the magnitude I ame xperiencing, any feedback is greatly appreciated. -
Yes, it does. Have to enable it in the BIOS(disabled by defauly)
-
i have the p8400 and i just upgraded my ram. i never experience lag, everyting is instant, almost no loading times, i can open several internet windows and other applications... maybe you should call hp to try and fix your problem
-
Its the same card, it explains it when you click on the description.
-
Actually, no it's not. He only got Wireless-G card he's supposed to get the Wireless-N minicard.
-
Try doing some of these Vista tips and tweaks:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532
You have similar specs to mine. I did those tweaks the same day I got it and it runs beautifully fast.
However it shouldn't be that slow from day 1. If the tweaks don't help I'd go with what justin_yr suggested and contact HP. -
Thanks for the information! Just ordered now with the $400 coupon. I hope everyone takes advantage of this. I'm totally psyched! Here are my specs:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)

Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
Keyboard HP Color Matching Keyboard
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support

Again, i hope everyone grabs this great opportunity to cut down the cost. Mine came out $1130 after taxes. Great deal i think!

About the processors in this model...
I could only get the 2.0Ghz processor if I wanted the 9600M GT GPU which I did. (UK only offers a few prebuilt models...)
And I know you don't see much difference until you go above 2.6 but I'm wondering now how this will affect my general gaming performance.
I plan to do a lot of gaming in future with my dv5, so even though I have the 9600M GT, will only having a 2.0 processor hold it back?
Is it worth upgrading my processor to 2.6 or 2.8? -
What is the main use of this HW virtualization?
A quick google search pops some links about multiple OS operation.

If you purchased your laptop within 21 days, call back for a price adjustment. You are guaranteed the lowest price within 21 days.
-
Got mine Today.
Simply Amazing. -
does that apply with coupons?
-
What does windows 'device manager' HD utility report for the drive size?
What changes have you made to the computer since you got it?
This is probably not what you want to hear but the simple solution would be to backup your data and then do a complete system restore.

JohnG -
Yes, but the coupon has to be valid on the day you call in.
JohnG -
well then what is the $400 off coupon?
-
NB4113 is the coupon code i believe..

Should I get the GeForce 9200M GS or GeForce 9600M GT???
I am a Graphic Designer, I use Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Dreamweaver, the whole Adobe Suite CS3 and a couple other Graphic Design programs.
I'd go with the 9600M GT, but this thread has told me a lot about heat/power battery and I'm doubting now.
If Im just using this apps I just said, will the system run Cooler and Longer?
While gaming, I know it gets hot and battery lasts 2 hours top. But while I'm not gaming, will it be ok?
Please I need a serious advice, as I'm going to order it this week
-
I vote to get the 9600 and get a notebook cooler. The $40-$60 investment in the cooler will help the laptop last much longer.
-
What about battery lifetime?
-
Undress, what you do requires more processor power rather than GPU power. As for battery life, under high performance with a 9600M GT and a P8600 GPU with a high capacity battery, I ran 1 hour and 25 minutes while watching a movie. As for heat, just don't have the vents covered and it won't overheat, but if you want to prolong it's life its highly suggested to take procedures to cool it down. Check my sig's link to see what i did. Another test, under power saver and idle, i got about 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Definitely the 9200M GS uses less battery power and produces less heat. But the 9600M GT is a lot better and it's nice to have if you will be gaming on it. -
Get the 9 or 12 cell battery when they come out. I too second getting the 9600 and a good cooler.
-
I would suggest the 9600GT video card. Regarding the heat, you got options regarding coolers and even just lifting up the notebook. good specs you got. -
1:25 while just watching a movie???? WOW That really sucks!!!, with a better processor it would be less time, right??
I'm decided, will go with the 9600M GT... But regarding what you say about prolonging it's life, you mean battery duration? or the card getting broken/burnt???
One important fact, is I want my laptop to last for years, not weeks because of overheating or something caused by GPU/CPU problems
Thanks for replies to all!

System was slow initially so I reinstalled windows vista 64, everything was fine and dandy, installed all necessary driver from HP site, fast and no problem. CEPT for 1. I received the problem report below.
This problem was caused by Intel(R) ICH9 Family Thermal Subsystem, which was created by Intel Corporation.
Also when I go to control panel and device manager, I see OTHER DEVICES (caused by no driver i assume) and under small sub windows there are 3 small icon says BASE SYSTEM DEVICE.
For the life of me I can not find out what it is. I installed the bios, ICH9 sata controller and chipset driver, all my USB are showing, infrared are showing, hard drive shows fine. Looking at HP site I do not see anything missing no matter how hard I look.
Any idea what it might be?
PS: other than that problem report, and the device manager hardware with a ? mark, the laptop is working fine....
-
The Adobe suite of products doesn't get much if any performance boost from the higher end GPU's. If you don't believe me just go to the Adobe forums and ask the same question.
The ONLY real reason to order the 9200 is for gaming.
I'd recommend the 8600 processor and the 9200 GPU for the apps you're looking at running. That's a VERY powerful HW combo. CS4 baby!

Looks like I'm in for the long haul with HP(21 days is over)...
I'm thinking about getting the notepal (been playing madden while in bed and its starting to get a little hot - ok for just everyday browsing) -
is there really an overheating issue with this laptop? im planning to buy 1 and i cant afford to have such problem. i usually play for very long hours, so if the gpu temp cant handle that, this one is not for me..
-
You mean 9600?
-
OMG OMG! SOME SERIOUS HP UPDATES!:
- dv6700t and similars are no longer available!
- A new dv3500t model is up now, 13" LED, 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS, Backlit Keyboard, etc.
- Lightscribe Blu-ray available now in Blu-ray enabled models
- HDX 18t up now also
- dv5t / dv4t SPECIAL EDITIONS! (They suck now, not much available features - but they will sure rock soon)
- 12 cells batteries now available!
So guys, load up your wallets, cuz we're going shoppin' !!!
-
My thinking exactly. We've been waiting for 64bit applications to become more mainstream for quite sometime now, but it seems to only a few professional level applications that take advantage of the 64bit processing capabilities.
Personally, I'm going to get the 4 GB ram upgrade in the next month or so, but that's just really so I can keep my laptop a little while longer. Maybe the next version of consumer windows 64bit will spawn more 64bit applications...who knows -
Sweet deals- backlit keyboard, ightscribe blu-ray, 12 cell batteries
not so sweet- 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9300GS as it only has 64-bit compared to dv5t 9600 GT's 128-bit although the former should produce less heat.
-8 GB memory for $725???
just buy from newegg or buy another laptop altogether lol
-
i think the general consensus here is that this laptop is recommended to be used with a cooler. although i don't think anybody has reported of "over"heating, the dv5t does get warmer than a laptop should. i really can't tell you yet personally as my unit will get to me after oct.9 but that is what i have observed here.
-
The general consensus here is that you probably don't want to game with this laptop on your lap. Also many, if not most, recommend having some sort of active cooling device or raising the back of the laptop 1-2 inches which will help alleviate the heat while gaming. The problem isn't the heat will "stop" your game, but over time like anything electronic, increased heat may cause your laptop to degrade at an accelerated pace versus less heat.
-
I just spoke with 3 different reps -- 2 Indian customer service reps -- and 1 American in the parts store who said the part isn't available yet even though it's an option when configuring your laptop. She said HP is most likely out of stock and that the part is currently only available through a retailer -- Spare Parts Warehouse. I guess that's where HP is getting it from. They're charging at least $360 for it. Sucks.

Intel website seems to be down but from Wiki
Intel and AMD have independently developed virtualization extensions to the x86 architecture. They are not directly compatible with each other, but serve largely the same functions. Either will allow a virtual machine hypervisor to run an unmodified guest operating system without incurring significant emulation performance penalties.
I'm guessing that you can run Intel's vritualization software (Similar to vmware where you can run a Linux OS or Windows OS within a host Operating System) without experience significant performance loss -
HP just lowered the base price to $699 ($599 with instant rebate), and added the option for 12 cell battery for only $49.
-
There's a lot of unjustified hyperbole about heat issues in my opinion, although it probably depends on the specific game you're playing and how long your gaming sessions tend to run.
I played a couple hours of WoW last night with my dv5t on my lap. Granted, I shift it to the left of center by a few inches so that the fan on the back left is free to blow both out and down, but this thing REALLY doesn't get that hot compared to several other notebooks I've owned with discrete graphics.
Mine has been perfectly fine sitting on my kitchen table cranking out 60 fps in 80 player pvp battlegrounds for an hour or two at a time - then again, I rarely play longer than that without flipping on my desktop.
For reference, I actually own a notebook cooler, but I haven't bothered to pull it out of the closet in the month that I've owned my dv5t. To each their own though I suppose. -
Does anyone find the keyboard on this thing to be a bit frustrating?
I code quite a bit and the right shift is really annoying me... -
Yes. I prefer the Lenovo keyboard layout (on my T60p and T41p) but it just take some adjustment since I use those two for work 10 hours a day versus playing games playing on line a couple hours on the HP
-
Is there any way, if I get the 9200M GS, to upgrade it to a better one like the 9600M GT later? like bringing it to HP or other computer center and buy a new card so they put it instead of the 9200M GS? (In case I need a better one later)
-
unfortunately, you cannot upgrade a graphics card except i think for some dell products. so better decide now as it will be a long term (and permanent) investment.
-
Yep. Soddered on...this is a upfront investment
-
In agreement.
