Hey everyone. I have had my HP DV5T for less than two months. I received it in early August. Starting a couple of days ago, my screen began to flicker. It would flicker and flash black for a second, and then go back to normal. This would occur at random time periods, and would last for about two or three minutes. Today while in class, my screen started to flicker again. However, something different happened this time. I started seeing multiple horizontal black lines go across the screen. Then the bottom half of the screen went out for about 3 seconds and came back on. Right after that the bottom of the screen starting pixelating from bottom to top and fading out. I freaked out and turned the computer off. When I got home today I noticed that not only do I have a dead pixel that wasn't there before, but there are three spots of dust stuck under the screen! I forgot to mention that I have an infinity screen and the dust spots are closer to the center of the screen.

What do you think the problem is? I think that the connection between the pc and lcd is loose. But I think it's so weird that all of a sudden there's dust stuck in the middle of my screen. Should I send this in for repair? What would they do to my pc, and how long do you think this whole process would take? I'm a graduate student and I need my pc asap! Thanks. :(

That's about what I get as well. Sometimes when I work on some photos it'll go up to low 50s but nothing too concern considering the upper thermal threshold is much higher(I think around 70-80 would be nearing detrimental for the CPU). Please correct me if I'm wrong

Hey guys I have a serious question/issue here. So my mom bought a dv5t. So far it's been great. It looks beautiful. It loads in a decent amount of time. The finger print scanner is pretty tight.

However I'm concerned about the battery life. Right now I have it set at "High Performance" because she wears glasses like I do and bright screens are easier on her eyes. I know it will drain the power quickly but what I want to know is just how long this battery is supposed to last if it's FULLY CHARGED.

It seems like I'll walk away and the laptop will die on me when it's running just on the batter even though I just charged it to a decent amount.

And I'm starting to get worried that HP sent me a defective battery or if there is something wrong with the notebook itself.

So please if anyone could tell me what's going on I'd greatly appreciate it. Also I'd like to know just how long the battery should last. And just to be clear she got the "HIGH Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Battery". I thought that would add to the battery life but so far I'm not seeing it...

Are you sure the battery is dead (after you "walk away") or is the computer just shutting down because of the power save settings?

The pricing is pretty much identical when you factor in the higher CPU upgrade costs. That's fine................. they make pretty good products at VERY competitive prices.

Those HP sales folks are smart. :p.

I ran it down from 100% to 5% (screen eventually shuts off) under high performance while watching a video. I got about 1 hour and 25 minutes of battery life. With power saver and almost idle the whole time, I got around 2 hours and 40 minutes. I had the high capacity 6 cell battery with a P8600 CPU and 9600M GPU.

CassilineKnight, you don't have to have it under High Performance to have the screen brightness on full, although that's one major reason of lower battery life. You can set power saver to always have max brightness.

Ew. I hate to be so materialistic but those Lenovo's are just ugly.

Do you think I'll ever get used to this keyboard? I really would prefer not to have to go through the hassle of being without a computer for a month.

The placement of the capslock key light is the only thing that annoys me with the keyboard because my hand is always in the way while I'm pressing the button so I can't see whether it's on or not...

Generally I've had better keyboards and the one on the new 15" Qosmio F50 series that I tested on display yesterday is a dream, seriously, the finish is so smooth. If only I could just have the keyboard of that in my current laptop. In fact I'll probably go back and test it out again during my lunch break lol too bad they don't have the x300 series on display.

Is the xoticpc Force 3551 better than dv5t in gaming? I have seen on xoticpc that the force 3551 has 9600M GT DDR3.

I would take advantage of the warranty as much as possible. I think some people on this board have taken pictures of their laptop as there has been horror stories of HP or their service centers not taking care of the laptop(scratches, dents, etc)

Hey guys ^_^, I've been following this forum for a couple of weeks ever since I decided to get this laptop. I really look forward to getting it in a week when I get my check XD lol. I decided on this laptop because I play World of Warcraft and this laptop has one heck of a graphics card on it. I also go to college so I need it for school also, so it seems like a great all around laptop. Not to mention I love computers and this one that I've cutomized is awesome ^_^.

    Here's mines

    – Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    – Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    – 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    – 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    – 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    – 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    – [For BrightView Infinity Display] Webcam Only
    – HP Color Matching Keyboard
    – Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    – Integrated 56K Modem
    – Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    – HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    – One 6 Cell and One 12 Cell Lithium Ion Batteries
    – Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    – Computrace LoJack for Notebooks, One Year

Oh yeah and I am sooo happy about the new additions HP added to this laptop like the 12-cell battery and 400GB Hard Drive *cheers* lol

And I have one question about this laptop, can you really tell the difference between the widescreen and the regular size? My last laptop was widescreen and I liked the size of it so thats why I got another widescreen on this one. Eventhough I know with the higher resolution you get better pic detail and stuff. I just want to know is it worth it to get the higher resolution and because its not widescreen would it make the monitor seem small?

    ~ aishaclan15 ^_^ ~

Hey guys, I'm considering buying a dv5t, but I have concerns about heat. I currently own a dv4000 (Centrino 1.6) and have no complaints regarding heat issues. From what I've read, it appears that if you configure your dv5t with a less powerful CPU and graphics card, that heat will not present a problem. Do you think that a dv5t that is equiped with an Intel T5800 CPU and Nvidia 9200M GS graphics card will perform within a reasonable temperature range? (By the way, FYI - I don't play games or watch movies on my laptop.)

Really? because of the wording I figured that the ones that say widescreen were 15.4 widescreen, and the ones that didnt say widescreen were just 15.4without widecreen. Cuz I would love to have that high resolution and widescreen with infinity, but I dont think they offer that. the last option is just infinity without widescreen, thats how I saw it. Correct me if I'm wrong

    I put the options here

    15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

    15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

    15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050

WXGA and its derivatives are widesceen resolutions. 15.4 inch also describes the screen as being widescreen.

    Otherwise, it'll just say 14 or 15 inch...not 15.4.

Can anyone share their temps with me? Internet browsing for a couple hours on my Studio 15 on a soft surface (bed) yields 44C (111F) ACPI w/ HWmonitor for processor. 34C (93F) HDD. After 10 minutes on hard surface (table) of stressing w/ orthos, using "blend stress cpu and ram," ACPI 61C (140F) 34C (93F) HDD.

Ambient temp in room - 79 degrees F
    System in sig.
    No cooler.
Bottom and top not so hot as to be uncomfortable.
    Test: Orthos, 10 minutes

Trust me u will really appreciate the extra space on the screen and if u like glossy screens thn go with

Hey I tried 3-4 diff drivers but the WEI Score doesnt change at all and also whn i view the full report, it always shows the GPU driver as the old one.
For E.g the stock drivers were 175.86 and whn i tried chking the WEI with 178.13, it still shows tht 175.86 is installed, where as anywhere else like in DXDIAG or System Device Manager it shows 178.13. Any idea on this??

This thread discusses the HP DV5T. If you want to compare temps for the Dell Studio 15, you might want to check the Dell Studio 15 owner's thread. You'll probably get more responses there.

I was just thinking, do you guys see any reason why I'd need the T5800 over the T3200? They're both 2.0 GHz. The T5800 has an 800 MHz FSB and 2 MB cache, while the T3200's FSB runs at 677 MHz and it has 1 MB of cache. I'm wondering if a non-gamer like myself will realistically perceive any difference between the two.

contriver, I would strive for P series for the lowest. But if not, get the T5800 definitely. There is a big difference between dual-core and core 2 duo. The P series will save power and produce less heat.

Hasham, how did you install your drivers?

Chango99, you are right. The core 2 duo is a much more advanced technology with huge improvements in the power management arena, in addition you will get the improvements that come with the newer chipset required to support the core 2 duo

I'm concerned about the temperatures on a Inte P8600 with a GeForce 9600M GT, IF it overheats, what could happen? burn the graphics card? burn the whole motherboard? Nothing? what happens if it reaches VERY HIGH temperatures? and important: At what temperatures would that happen?

    Thanks guys!

In my experience, extremely high temperature will cause lock ups initially but that starts it down the slippery slope towards complete hardware failure where you'll see random lockups and bluescreens. Its also possible to burn out the silicon so that it'll stop working completely.

I think everyone will be fine, as long as you aren't trying to play games in a 100 degree room or something like that

I wanted responses from owners of the Dv5t for comparison purposes.

I currently work in the electronics field. Our company makes border security systems. The boxes are basically mini motherboards, with power regulator boards attached to them. They're Xilinx processors and Freescale FPGA's. The run warm in our tests at the facility (while they are in open air). In everyday use, they sit outside in Saudi Arabia encased in metal boxes. No holes, no fans. It doesn't get much hotter.

What I'm trying to say is, you really gotta have a ton of heat for a long long time for them to burn up. The specs Nvidia is going to give out is probably on the low end, just so they can say "we told you so" if something were to happen due to heat.

All in all, I wouldn't worry about any heat issues.
