Using a DV5T on a soft surface isn't a good idea. The air intake vents are under the laptop. If a blanket or pillow is covering it, it would get pretty hot. Under gaming, people are lifting the back an inch to get better air circulation if they aren't already using a notebook cooler.

Based on Intel's Thermal specs http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31674505.pdf
The CPU will automatically shut off to prevent catastrophic damage at around 125 degrees C
It also made a couple references to 100 degrees C as the high end of the operating range
My guess is the CPU can take it but continual exposure to high heat will degrade the CPU and reduce its life span
A quick sniff around Nvidia's website nets no information that I can see -
Second time for this question. Do the NVIDIA graphics cards allow higher resolution settings than the ordered display resolution? Reason I ask, I plan to order with the dock and route to my older, larger monitor when at home office. However, my eyesight is not as good at 53 years old and I am currently using an HP laptop which matches the lesser resolution offered, which is about what my eyes can handle on the 15.4 inch laptop screen.
The NVIDIA site does not list available resolutions for these cards in their product spec pages. I was unable to see the higher res version at the Best Buy I went to, and did not think to check what the available resolution settings for the cards were.
Could some one check and see if they allow higher than the provided display resolutions? -
To be absolutely sure, call or chat with HP. In my experience, every modern day graphics card ramdac handles very high resolutions as well as the standard VGA ones (640x480,800x600,etc). Back in the day of 4 MB video ram, that wasn't always the case(the video ram doesn't have much effect on resolutions anyway). Have you also checked to see what resolutions your monitor supports? If its a LCD , you will get the best results on its native resolution. If its a CRT then it should be able to support all the resolutions up to its highest and still look decent.
-
Thanks. It's a CRT that I am not ready to replace while it still works well - even with all the desk space it hogs. I assumed these cards and drivers could handle higher resolutions but the older HP I'm on now with an ATI Radeon graphics card lists the 1280 x 800 that the display uses as the max available for it - so I wondered what modes the available NVIDIA cards for this unit would support and was surprised when the NVIDIA site did not even offer this info on their product specs pages.

Yes, I know that, I'm just using it for comparison purposes. As to which would have an advantage in that kind of a situation. I used to own an HP Dv2819NR and that thing just screamed infertility so I sold it. No really, that thing got crazy hot, on even a hard surface. So hot that aero animations would lag - on a hard surface, with the back propped as high as possible without tipping the notebook over using an external CRT monitor. I just wanted to see if the Dv5t did not get as hot as the previous generations. I also heard that the Dv5t does not have a heatsink for the GPU in an older thread with screenshot comparisons. I just wanted to see how hot it got, in comparison with my Dell, which can be run perfectly even on a soft surface for hours without high temps or slow aero animations. I was contemplating on buying the Dv5t as a gift, but if it has the same problems as the previous generation, then I would not buy it. -

Yes, you can use higher resolutions. The display's native resolution doesn't have anything to do with the maximum resolution the card can output. -
That's because the laptop display can only go that high, not the video card. The video card itself can drive much higher resolutions when docked. On my thinkpad undocked I get only 1400x1050 as the max, however, when docked I can put 1600x1200 on my LCD(which is the max that particular LCD can display).
Its the combination of the two -
Hey everybody, first time poster here. Will this laptop be sufficient for everyday school use(ms office, internet browsing, videos, dvds). I will not be playing any games on this. Should I pull the trigger for $545 shipped? Thanks!

After having the laptop for a week now, there is only one thing that I'm still not used to and thats the touchpad. My fingers still want to think that the recessed area below the actual buttons are the buttons. And the touchpad is really sensitive. Might poke around a bit see if I can turn that down. Overall though I'm loving this laptop. -
I've had my DV5T for a few weeks. I use it on a wood table. Without the back lifted, laptop got fairly warm. It wouldn't hurt my palm, but it would be pretty warm. With it lifted in the back, it was cooler, but still warm. I just wasn't comfortable with how warm it got for years of use. I'm sure it would have shortened the laptops life if it was always that warm. I bought a Notepal Infinite cooler and the laptop now stays pretty cool. With all that said, I wouldn't trust using it on a soft surface. I haven't played any games on my laptop. All I've mainly done so far is to browse the web and run defrag.

Hi, I have already installed my OEM Vista Home Premium to my dv5t but I will be passing this laptop to my cousin permanently.
So how should I remove my OS from this laptop and use back the one provided HP? Can I just use the recovery disc and restore everything to original state?
Pls advice
Thanks a million!!! -
If you didn't remove the recovery partition on your HD, you should be able to restore to the HP Vista OS. If you created the recovery DVD's through the HP software before you installed the clean Vista OS, you can also use that.

Hi Wtchr,
Thanks! Noted!!!
-
Anyone have any info on the battery for the dv5t? I ask because I just noticed this in Ubuntu:
Product: Primary
Status: Charging
Percentage charge: 98.0%
Vendor: Hewlett-Packard
Technology: Nickel metal hydride
Serial number:
Model: Primary
Charge time: 9 minutes
Capacity: 54% (Poor)
Current charge: 34.8 Wh
Last full charge: 35.5 Wh
Design charge: 64.8 Wh
Anyone know what the 'Capacity' and 'Design Charge' are? -
Has anyone yet purchased the new 12 cell battery?
If so, can you give the battery durations with your laptop specs?
Aaaand, is it big as most 12 cell bats? (if pic available we would love it!)
Thanks!
Also, the NB4113 coupon expired, when could we expect the next coupon? and will it be as good? or better? worse? :O -
Why does it say the technology is Nickel metal hydride? Isn't that the way old batteries were? Shouldn't it be lithium ion? -
I'd be willing to bet the next coupon will be the 30% off flavor. When........... ??? probably sometime this next week.

so what do you guys think about the dv5t special edition?
-

Thanks for your input guys! The person it's supposed to be for is a girl, it looks like most temps are ok, but the gpu gets pretty warm. I don't really want my girlfriend to have to bring around a cooler even when she doesn't game. Were the temps you gave gaming, idle, or web browsing?
-
Where do you get the coupons from? I should be buying mines this Wednesday
-
guys from wher can we buy the cooler for dv5t?
i havent received the lappie yet..but u all say it has heat issues..
so wht precautions do i need to take? -
I actually went and bought one already from Best Buy, prolly over priced but it was 60 dollars. its the Targus Chill Mat, but I like it because it has 4 usb ports on the side of it for whatever. Or you can just get one off of Hp's website, theres some on there.
-
FatMangosLAWL Notebook Evangelist
Way overpriced, and many say that Targus cooler isn't good. Many people here use the notepal infinite cooler, but I'm not sure where to buy it. Google is your friend.
-
The only place that people in the US were able to find the Notepal infinite was from Expansys.com. I was lucky enough to find it when it was offered for a short time on Amazon. It was the same price at $29.99, but shipping was $2.50 instead of the $10.

What does the SE look like? -
I take back what I said about the touch pad being too sensitive. Its godly when playing audio-surf
.
-
Anybody know any sleeves I can get for the dv5t?
Also can the CPU be changed in it? -
Try this link for a sleeve: http://www.chromebags.com/products/bags/show/52/
AFAIK, the CPU can't be changed.

check the october 4th update link from this websites homepage.

just wanted everyone to know that I'm writing this post from within BETA of Ubuntu 8.10! I have a dual boot of Vista/Ubuntu and it worked right out of the box! No issues with wifi (I have the Intel AGN5100) , sound, or graphics.
Can't wait for the final release on Oct 30!. Enjoy! -
What ap/process made you try Ubuntu?
JohnG -
I've always wanted to put it on one of my machines. I tried it on my desktop, but there was a lot of hardware issues. I had 8.04 on the new lappy but no wifi. Then 8.10 comes out announcing support for the new intel wireless chips. I guess I just like playin around until somethin works.
-
Sounds good. Let us know if you find something really cool about it.
JohnG -
Yeah, I've had this going for a few weeks myself. It was a pain in the a$$ getting the new kernel rolled to get the wifi, but I gave up and waited until the alpha 6 came out. There's still some hiccups with it, like jockey crashing off the bat. I think there's a problem with the video driver as well, as my card seems to run a little warmer at idle, but runs fine under stress.
The touchpad config is a pain in the butt as well, I'm still working on it. I found a fix in some forum, but it didn't work for me. Touchpad works fine, but you can't configure it out of the box, and the program in the package manager needs some tweakin'. Hopefully all will be well at the end of the month.
Compiz does make it look really groovy, though.
Running the updates brings the kernel up to date as well.
Oh yeah, did I mention - full install with eye candy runs at about 400MB, give or take. Why did I get 4GB of RAM? Oh yeah, Vista (vLited down to about 800MB) -
Can any of you guys hear your hard drive in a quiet room?, I can hear mine when the HDD light is on. Maybe I'm being too picky about my laptop but the high temperatures the hard drive reaches (around 43°C) when I'm doing basic stuff, have gotten me worried.

Nope...the fan is louder than anything else on this laptop

Question about backlight leakage!
when booting up, shutting down, or surfing web pages that is nearly all back in the background, i can see two gray/white stripe abotu 1/4 to 1/2 in wide stretch from top of LCD panel to middle of screen, and some slight leakage near bottom of screen. While not a problem doing normal web surfing, it is noticeable with blk background.
Question is, is it ok or normal for laptop to have this, or should I say common? and will it get worse? I'm still within the 21 day period.......
I have the 1680 x 1050 LCD.. and 9600M GT -
Have you tried already the latest video drivers ver 179.13? . I am using the the latest ones released by HP. I do not know if the use of the latest one will increase the performance. According to nvidia "This version supports NVIDIA® Phys™ acceleration on all GeForce 8-series, 9-series and 200-series GPUs with a minimum of 256MB dedicated graphics memory. NVIDIA PhysX System Software v8.08.18 is automatically installed with this driver package."
I did not know that the Phys was already in the 9600 GT -
Hi There
I use this and I love it:

w00t my dv5t was shipped!!!! I cant wait!!
-
For those of you who already got their dv5t, how long did it take for you to receive it? I'm trying to decide whether I should get 2 day shipping or just the regular 5-7 day. I called HP and they said its 2 days after the ship date and they said it takes like a week to build the pc.
-
Congratz ^_^, I should be ordering mines today or tommarow
-
For some reason when I try to update video drivers I'm getting error: "The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
I tried couple different drivers and all of them show the same error.
I'm getting 4.8 score only having 9600M GT. Just want kick it up a little bit. I reinsatlled Vista and all drivers from original setup I download to C:\drivers
currently I have:
5/22/2008
7.22.11.7586 driver
Anyone can help me, please........ -
Same here! Just got my shipping confirmation
Great forum BTW! -
Wait for a coupon.
-
hello, all I've been playing around with my dv5t ever since i got it last Friday.
I just got a quick question and that is how do you turn off the fan. I know you go in BIOS when the computer start up but is there a way that I can do that from the windows GUI?
-
i believe hp has coupon deals again. has anybody tried it?
-
I don't think there is a current 'coupon' available for the dv5t as of 10/07/2008
HP has a bogus 50% sale going on right now ............. but it's bogus.
did I mention that the 50% discount was bogus.
