This has probably been answered already.

Is it possible to get rid of Vista and install XP on the dv5t? And what about Ubuntu?

Undress, I believe they only cto for US.

You can buy extended warranty after you buy your product at any time. Let's say you purchase 1 yr, that year passes by. You can then purchase a 3yr warranty, but you will only have 2 years left on it.

Ubuntu can be put on anything. It only uses < 400 MB on a complete install. Get the new Intrepid Ibex Alpha release, as it has support for the 5100 Intel Wifi. You can pretty much run Linux on a toaster.

I just got my dv5 the other day, it sometimes left clicks by itself. Should I be concerned and is anyone else experiencing this?

It shouldn't be clicking by itself at all. Make sure that you've got up to date security software and test out the hardware (ie-test all keys and mouse movements.) Make sure that you don't have any errors in Device Manager. Look at Event Viewer and make sure you don't see any errors there either.

Could be hardware related...something shorting out underneath is emulating a click. I've had mine for about a month and the only thing I find annoying is that the quickplay keys are not very sensitive sometimes, a common problem

Not sure about the warranty through HP, but you may be able to get some third party coverage. A popular one is Square Trade. They sell warranties for a quite a variety of electronics.

Use the ABR tool documented in the Clean Vista Install thread (somewhere on these forums, I believe in the Windows OS roundtable). This will let you activate Windows without contacting MS.

Make sure you use ALL the multipliers in the RM clock settings.

You probably forgot to scroll down and check the highest multiplier, so you're running underclocked. If you don't check the maximum then the machine will run at the highest one you set.

    I'm in need of some advice. I just ordered a dv5t -> 2.53 GHz T9400 Intel duo processor, 1680 x 1050 res., 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) [Free upgrade from 2 GB], 9600M GT, 250GB 5400 RPM HDD.

I haven't gotten my notebook yet and am a little scared that I have made some bad decisions after reading a few pages of this thread. I want to use this laptop for some gaming, photoshop, other types of editing, and whatever school work I have to do.

Should I replace the 5400 RPM HDD with a 7400 RPM one so my processor is worth its speed? Would it be difficult to replace the HDD on the dv5t? How is the RAM quality that HP ships with? Should I get more/new RAM? Has HP made any upgrades to keep the computer from becoming as hot or noisy as it used to?

I want to keep this notebook for a couple of years (at least) in good shape and working to its full capacity. All advice is greatly appreciated.

I actually don't think going to a 7200 RPM drive will make a HUGE difference unless you're doing video editing. That said, if you're so inclined I would HIGHLY recommend that you clone the 5400 drive to a 7200 RPM drive. Keep the original drive as a spare in case you trash your OS. Makes for a super simple recovery process.

This is the badest deal on 7200 RPM drives right now:

Can anyone tell me why the Control + T to open a new tab in firefox only works with the right Control button, but not the left? I can use the left Control button to select all and copy and paste, but control+t won't work. Thanks.

Basically, the touch slider volume control SUCKS!

Some times it seems to work ok, other times it doesn't.
Some times it even gives bunch of little "clicks" as if I'm touching it, other times it's fine. Some times I get a black box with little dots to show the volume going up and down, other times it doesn't.

Overall, it's a software and hardware based control that is simply a BAD design.
A regular volume control with buttons would have been better.

One more thing, I tried to disable the touch control. When i did I couldn't adjust the Vista OS volume control.
    Again, bad.

Try to press the stop touch button, it might stop it, for some reason it has worked for some people, including me. It's a heat related issue, when the laptop starts the heat up, the quicktouch acts up, most noticeably the volume, since it tends to go up and down alot.

That's happened for me. Just rubbing my finger rapidly back and forth across the whole quicktouch panel a few times has fixed it though.

No, not heat related. Mine does it from a cold fresh boot up, whenever it feels like acting up. Sometimes even when it's warm it works just fine.

The quicktouch on my dv5t are terrible. One night I was trying to write a paper and after touching it, it wouldn't stop on my screen and freaking out.

^ that sucks. i am using a vx nano mouse on my dv7t instead of the quicktouch although i have not had any problems with my touchpad. this may be an option for you if you are working long hours on your laptop, especially doing schoolwork...

i rarely use the touchpad after i got the logitech vx nano. that mouse is the best. it had back and forward buttons which i use for internet explorer, it has a button that brings up all running applications and the scroller works both both vertically and horizontally. it's a pretty decent mouse if you're looking for one.

I think they meant the quicktouch buttons, not the touchpad itself. I've not had problems with the wild swing in volume(probably very scary), in fact, I have a very hard time to get it unmuted and volume up...

EDIT: The title is meant to read DV5T but I can't change it now - no clue where my brain grabbed HT from

...but all the reviews are great that I can find, I just wanted to ask if there are any 'lessons learned' that a new prospective buyer should consider.

I was waiting to get a Dell but since their Montevino refresh is taking a while and I still strongly fear Dell service and support, here are my questions about HP in general:

    1) Dell is nightmarish (depending on your luck) when it comes to leveraging a hardware warranty, even the full protection plan. You never get a new item in return and the quality of the refurbished item is very iffy - and if you have issues with it, good luck trying to get it taken care of. How is HP warranty support and replacement?

    2) I want to go into a store to see the difference in resoultion options and the whole infinity border thingy, but is there ANY reason not go with the higher resolution display other than $$$?

I'm assuming I can play games equally well on both and if a game doesn't run as well at max resolution, I should be able to change it to something lower and have no issues right?

I ask because I know running Windows in anything but the native monitor resolutions results in less than clear, crips lines and text - but for gaming, this should not be the case right?

    THANKS!

The problem usually arises from heat, then, even after rebooting, the problem will still be there, but it still usually starts with heat when running more intensive things like games. Do a reboot when it is fine and the problem won't arise.

I had the same problem, then, after i took steps to cool my dv5t, it never happened anymore. Coincidence? Maybe... but what are the odds? Other people confirm it usually starts w/ heat too.

I've done a clean install of Vista 64 bit on my DV5T. Installed all of the latest drivers from HP's site. I've never had any issues with the quicktouch buttons. The mute button works fine and the color changes correctly. The volume button works fine also and have never gone "crazy" on me. I guess knock on wood.

The only thing I like about the quicktouch:

In Ubuntu, when the wireless is connecting, the wireless quicktouch button flashes back and forth from blue to orange. Very trippy.

Received mine this week and I'm looking at adding this 4GB set of Ram from NewEgg. Does anyone have any experience with OCZ?

I also just found a thread that says go for G.Skills Ram instead since there is no mention of OCZ's warranty & that OCZ is slow with rebates (but isn't everyone?).

    Any advice?

I've used the GSKILL mem in several computers including 4GB in the DV5T. I'm a big fan of their products and I also think you can't beat the no rebate BS price. Tastes great and less filling.

OCZ has lifetime warranty. It might not be worth it if you don't like MIR. Btw I'm selling mine that I used for a month or so. Used ram won't really be a problem, I already ran it through memtest. I don't have a laptop anymore, so if you want it for cheaper, check my sig if interested. I'm selling ram an cooler.

Like sparkles61785 in an older post in this thread (#3622), I too am now having my screen start to flicker occasionally.

I noticed it last night while the computer was just sitting there, turned on but not doing anything. Then it started doing it again today while I was watching a movie. I restarted the machine and I noticed a flicker after Windows had already shut down.

    Happened on power and battery.

Anyone else notice this problem yet?

    Hi everyone,

Does anybody have any problems with their NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS video card? I've got HP dv4t with this video card and when using NVIDIA drivers either from hp.com or laptopvideo2go.com Windows (Vista x64) crashes (BSOD). Usually it happens when I start something video graphics intensive or if I ran something that requires an UAC.

It seems like a defective GPU to me.

    Any ideas?

I'm not liking the battery life on my dv5t. I knew it was mediocre from researching around here, but mine is just bad. 2 hours max while browsing the internet via wifi (power saver mode).

    What I have now
    P7350
    9600GT
    4GB RAM
    etc...

    What I may downgrade to
    T5800
    Integrated 4500
    3GB RAM

How much longer would you all expect it to last? I decided I would just use the savings for a better desktop for gaming.

If you want more battery life, only dropping the GPU will help. The P series uses less power than the T series processors. Ram won't make any difference.

    Get a 12 cell?

Can a user without the Infinity display let me know if the webcam is flush against the frame or does is stick out in the old models like the dv2500t?

    I understand your reasoning.
However, for something to be true, either it is or it isn't. For the issue to be heat related, then it will ONLY happen when the laptop is warm or hot, and NOT happen when its fresh and cool.

Others may have the problem coincidently when their laptops are warmer, but my experience is that the problem occurs cool or warm.
Since reinstalling and cleaning up files, programs, and drivers in many areas on my DV5T, espcially HP related, the volume control has been working mucn better cold or warm or hot.

I don't game so my overall temps stay fairly cool comparitively. :)

OCZ is very loved ram. I too was going to go with OCZ. I went with Gskill due to very good pricing without rebates. I'll do rebates but I DO NOT like them.
And, the reviews for OCZ rebates were not anywhere nearly as loved as their memory. :D
I have 3 DV5T's and I bought 6 2GB chips, so a good straight up price is what I needed. OCZ only allows 1 rebate per purchase or per address, or something like that. Overall, it would have cost me much more for the OCZ's only 1 rebate policy.

The Gskill memory I received works in all 3 DV5's, and works just fine.
BTW, make sure to discharge any static you may have built up on yourself or your system by touching something neutral BEFORE you handle the memory and the memory install. In the DV5 there are small amounts of metal that you can touch.
