I am a very experienced home A/V guy, designed a few systems. Very good with desktops, but, not great on laptops. Need some help with HDMI to Sony 5300 es A/V Receiver. Just got the dv5t and really like it. Has a Blu-Ray drive with the 9800gt card.

When I connect the laptop to the receiver it sees the second display as "AVM." It only displays at 860x480 (I think) and low color. The receiver can display up to 1080p and is fully HDCP compliant. No matter what I try and change in the display panel settings, it does not offer me another resolution. They are not listed. I need some help on this plz!!!

With the DV5T connected to the Sony Receiver (turned on), try going to Device Manager and run a scan for new hardware. When I connected my DV5T to my Sony HD TV, it didn't display out the HDMI port. I could see a 2nd display in display settings, but I couldn't make any changes keep. After going to device manager and running a scan for new hardware, it found a new display and all was good.

I've got a 3.4 year old Sony 60" projection LCD with an HDMI input.
Do you think the DV5T HDMI connect to my Sony?

I would think that it would. My Sony isn't a flat screen. It's an older WEGA and works fine with my DV5T.

Just got my new dv5t on Monday. It was shipped from Shanghai just on Friday, so I'd say getting it in 2 days (not counting Sunday) is pretty darn good! And I paid only $745 for it, including Blu Ray! Here are the full specs:

    - HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1280 x 800)
    - FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
    - 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam for HP BrightView Infinity Display
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    - Integrated 56K Modem
    - Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Very happy with it so far. It's MUCH quieter than the Dell Inspiron 5100 which it replaced. Faster, too!
So, I'm debating whether to do a clean install or just remove the programs I don't want. I'll be honest: doing a clean install seems VERY scary to me. I have no experience doing something that drastic. Does anyone have a list of typical bloatware programs for the dv5t that can just be uninstalled, one by one? I know some people are solidly in the "clean install" camp, but that option puts a heavy responsibility on the user to get it exactly right, and I just don't trust myself on this one.. :( So, any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks!

My suggestion is to uninstall what you aren't using. If you're bent on doing a new install I would first clone the drive to a spare.

That's pretty much my own version, except the cheapest UK version on offer was £750, so that's $1400!

I agree with johnnymg2, I just uninstalled what I didn't need as well so I didn't need to install all the drivers/programs again.
If you follow the Vista Tweaks guide in the OS forum you can get one fast laptop :p

No more than two days after I've received it.

It's reset itself a couple times completely randomly. I was using it last night to write a paper and now I turn it on this morning and it won't start up.

    Windows Boot Manager

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change meight be the cause. To fix the problem:

    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, then click Next.
    3. Click Repair Your Computer.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    File: \boot\BCD

    Status: 0xc000000f

Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I entered startup menu and ran the three system diagnostic tests it provides for RAM, run-test, and hard disk test. All had no problems.

I'd REALLY rather not do a system restore. But if I have to, I believe I can. It came with that weird restore from the hard drive D:\ option so I didn't create a disk. I created a system restore point yesterday, too.

What's going on / what should I do?

Sorry for double post. Nobody is even viewing the other one.

My Vista came with system restore on D drive. I got it two days ago. It's already messing up. If I system restore, does it completely wipe all my other files on C:\ that I've downloaded since? I'd like to avoid that if possible.

System Restore does not delete users files. It simply undoes changes to windows made since the time of the restore point.

So, I tried this and no luck. I tested the HDMI port on another LCD I have connecting directly to the display and no issues, I had audio and video with fully customizable resolutions. I am still stuck. I tried repeatedly to adjust rez and no luck. It locks in at 800x600 and will not change. It does display at 32 bit color and will display as the primary (only) monitor. I also can not get the HDMI audio to work.

    Any other suggestions????

ok, here's one for you all. After I booted up my system, and did all the question answering, etc... it had to shutdown and reboot to finish some setup or something. I just shut it down. Left it alone for a good 7 hours or so, I just tried to start it up. It showed the HP logo and then shut down. It did this 8 or 9 times. Needless to say, I was getting frustrated as heck. Anyways,, to the point.. I ran the diagnostic program in the bios, and then it did finally boot. I still don't know what that was about, it finished its part 3 of 3 setup deal, and knock on wood, it's ok so far.

I tried system restore to many different points, including the first user run, and it doesn't boot up still. Same error. Don't know what to do.

    Here's what happens:

System restore, says it's completed successfully and will restart my computer. I click ok.
Computer restarts, and reloads the system recovery manager.
It then proceeds in the very same way as if I hadn't restored at all, but had chosen to run the recovery manager of my own accord.
I can: run it again, cancel it, or power button off my computer.

Running it again: unending loop of restoring to the same point and always loading the recovery manager after it restarts.
Cancelling recovery manager: restarts computer to boot normally, and fails with the same error. Can't even boot in safe mode.
Power button off: same as cancelling recovery manager.

    How to fix?

So I said **** it and did a complete system recovery to factory settings. And in the midst of the second restart for installation phase (out of like 7 components that needed to install stuff) the laptop BSOD'ed and restarted. Then upon restart it said the installation failed, and to system recover again.

    This is so ridiculous.

It's a 9600M GT tomtomz, it's a big difference from 9800M GT. There is no 12 cell battery test right now, it was just released. I'm guesstimating it will last 4-5 hours on average if you use it conservatively. I got 2 hours and 40 minutes at near idle conditions on power saver mode. I just tried to keep the screen on. I had the high capacity 6 cell w/ a undervolted P8600 cpu and the 9600m gt gpu.

Just go to newegg and find one with 4 or 5 rated overall. Should be a 2x2 GB PC2 6400 800mhz kit. Most likely OCZ or G.skill will be the best prices. It's very simple to install ram, just unscrew the bottom where the ram is, take off the cover, take out the old ram, pop in the new one. Google search, took 10 seconds: http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-laptop-memory.htm

I noticed that last night if I shake the computer slightly, the screen will start to flicker. I only noticed because I shifted positions while I was using it and it flickered. I don't make a habit of shaking computers. :D

I still haven't sent the thing in. I may just take it up to a store my work uses for HP warranty repairs and see what they can do. (No, it's not Best Buy or anything similar)

alrighty then.... it seems to be fixed now.. although, HP doesn't know what the actually problem is. Had to unplug, unbattery, and hold the power button down for a minute. then he has me load the setup defaults in the bios. well, i don't know if that helped or not, it was probably just the power button thing.

From all the issues I've read in this topic I'm starting to think the general build quality of the American models aren't up to what they should be generally. So perhaps this helps explain the difference of costs between the US and UK models... Unless it's just that people post most when they have a problem or that I just got lucky with mine. The paid checking service my supplier offered I suppose is there for a reason...

Still think it's unfair that the UK only gets lower specs at higher prices, the spec in my signature is one of 2 or 3 of the highest models in this series. (1280 x 786 being the highest res generally for 15.4" screens!) I kind of wish I could have gotten a higher res, faster processor and the 64 bit version of vista because it's worth the same I paid ($1400)

lol that turned out to be a bit of a rant, I'm still happy with mine and mostly bought it for the GPU and HP's general build quality.

There is no video card in a notebook. The graphic chips are soldered to the mother board so don't remove any panels to try and find a card.

I'd also not recommend to open your system up, but it does sound like a loose connection or wire. Maybe the inverter is loose or some other component. Either way, HP repair should take care of it so that you don't void the warranty.

Not to be a smart a$$ - but isn't that what the "Search This Thread" tool at the top of the page is for, so you don't have to read through all 400 pages to find what you're looking for? It'll take you longer to wait for an answer from someone than it would to do a quick search.

Just got dv5t with p8600, 9600m gt and hitachi hdd, the gaming temp is decent (65 cpu, 73 gpu, 50 hdd), however while temp for cpu and gpu seem to decrease tremendously under non gaming situations, the hdd temp stays relatively the same. Im wondering is 50c for hdd temp ok? should I be worried about hdd wont last for too long? thanks

Did they do something new with the cooling in these things lately? I just tried some undervolting, and stressing my CPU got up to 84C after 5 minutes.

I used orthos as well. I only got up to about 55C when I realized I was on power save mode. Bumped it up to 100% max processor state (in the advanced power options). Orthos drove it up to 84C. A quick try at the undervolting took it down to only about 79C, but I was rushing it.

Hi guys, I'm having a problem with my DV5T's wifi when i run vista. The WIFI quicktouch button is in orange and doesnt enable. It works fine when i run it in xp but I cant seem to turn the wifi on when I'm in vista. I've been on dual OS for quite some time already and I havent done any updating on the system or installed new programs, this problem only happened yesterday. Any ideas if I should update the quicktouch buttons driver or the wifi driver?
