Mine also shipped today. I am trying to decide what portable wireless mouse to buy now... I searched the thread, and think I do not want to go bluetooth. What'a a recommended small laser wireless mouse for heavy travel for work? Looking at the logitech VX Nano but just started researching.

First thing I'll be doing is getting rid of all the pre installed crap. -
does anyone know how much crapware comes pre-installed on the dv5t?
about how many programs?
how much hard drive space does it take up? -
There is 27GB used now. Just got it from the store.
I'm not sure how big Vista is. -
vista is about 12gb so that would make 15gb of crapware!!
**** thats a lot, i hope any of that is useful! -
Why not just get rid of it all and do a clean Vista install ?
-
there could be a few useful programs included with it, like the software for the touchpad, webcam, or fingerprint reader. it's probably just easier to uninstall the individual programs than to wipe the whole hard drive and start from scratch and look for the software that you need.
-
I don't know, I actually liked having bloatware. I'm the type of geek that enjoys uninstalling all that.
-
I will give my notebook (once it arrives) to my university computer support and they will perform a clean install with all the necessary software.
-
I'll be doing my own clean install after making the recovery discs. Gotta wipe that recovery partition while I'm at it. Kinda excited, first time having a hard drive that was bigger than 100 gigs. I have an 80gig right now with 20 gigs free, seeing all that free space is going to be temping to fill up.
Sometimes the bloatware is useful, usually I find the bundled burning software to be better than most of the freeware out there, and more user friendly, but usually you can back those up. Anyone know if its just drivers in the swsetup folder or also the bloatware?
Also, has anyone tried running OSX on this? Lulz. -
Hello All,
Well, after reading all of the postings for several weeks, I ordered my dv5t, was given a Nov. 12th build date. . . and it was delivered on the 12th. That was a nice surprise. Even better, the laptop was gorgeous, and it was perfect. No scratches, no dents, no flaws, and everything seemed to work perfectly --- a HUGE relief!
And so, I started in on the long process of configuring my laptop, starting, like the good soldier I am, with creating my restore discs, and then proceeding to uninstall all the programs I didnt want. And I configured and customized --- nothing major, just making the system the way I like it.
UH OH!!!
By day two, I noticed that the touch pad was starting to act up a little not too bad, just occasionally erratic. Then, the mouse buttons started being unreliable, working most of the time, but not always. Then, I was starting to have a few little problems with the system not allowing me to access a few files and programs nothing terribly important in the beginning, but when I couldnt get into My Pictures or My Documents, that was it! I was on the phone with tech support, for the first of FIVE separate 2 3 hour sessions in two days, and unbelievable frustration.
They didnt know whether it was hardware or a software problem, but it was getting drastically worse by the hour. Literally. One of the tech support guys said this was the worst corruption he had ever seen
I even had to go through
two system restores, because the first one was corrupted. It was really torturous guys! But, luckily for me, one of the tech support guys made an interesting observation that ultimately led to the answer to the problem. He kept saying the system was acting like it was virused (but the virus and spyware scans had come up clean) and he finally came up with the reason. Youll never believe it! When I had uninstalled Norton, using the undelete button in Programs and Features, and then installed Avast anti-virus, the Avast apparently conflicted with the bits and pieces of Norton apparently still left in my system, and caused what was like a huge virus attack. Fortunately, the tech support guy knew enough to download the Norton Removal Tool from Google and once we ran it, immediately, the system was great again. Big relief! That was a couple of days ago, and I havent had any other problems, so I think Im out of the woods.
-
...just one of the reasons for doing a clean install on your new notebook
.
-
And the reason Norton and Symantec(sp?) was the first to go when I first got mine lol
-
YES HP will send you the 64-bit VISTA disc (if you choose the 64-bit VISTA as your OS of choice). It will restore your system to factory setting.
-
Hmm.. I did the exact same thing with my laptop last night after it was delivered. Got rid off Norton and installed Avast. Haven't had any issues so far, but will get the Norton Removal tool just to make sure the same.
Had no major heat issues so far. The laptop was on for about 5 hours and the temperature for GPU/Core1/Core2 was never over 37C. No problems with the quick-buttons either. Hopefully it stays that way
I tried to burn the recovery cd's and the writer burned the 1st DVD and during verification failed on 2 occasions. So wasted 2 DVD's before burning and verifying them properly. Will be testing the DVD read/write function more to make sure there is no problem there.
I am not exactly thrilled with the battery life though. It lasted for about 2.5 hours with the vista "power-saver" setting on for the supposedly "high capacity 6-cell battery" .
Considering doing a clean Vista install. Start-up is taking about 2 minutes which is ridiculous really. Any idea how fast does vista starts up with a clean install?
Just a few minor gripes but so far the laptop has been excellent. -
Has anyone tested the 12 cell battery and how it performed on "Power-saving?" Jw. Preferably, someone with the intel igp not the nvidia.
-
Anybody here install any form of Linux on their dv5t? I can get everything to work except the TV tuner (haven't tried) and the fingerprint scanner (couldn't find any working programs).
-
Oh yea I'm happily running Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems at all. I don't have the TV Tuner so i can't vouch for that but Fingerprint reader hmmm...I'll do some digging
-
i ordered my dv5t on 11/11 and they just shipped it out from china last night around 11 pm EST. The package has already reached and left the FedEx warehouse in Alaska by around 5pm EST... the estimated delivery date is 11/24 but i dont think that is very accurate. so when should i expect to have it by?
-
11/24...is when you should expect it. If you were lucky, then the 21st...
-
really? because i have seen a few people say it took them about 2-3 days to get theirs, and mine is already on its way, so i hope i get is soon!!!
-
then lucky for you...and i did have a hint of sarcasm in my post, just to let you know
-
does anyone know if the recovery disc comes with the dv5t, i didn't buy the extra vista disc, but is the recovery software already in a folder on the hard drive?
-
I don't know about the TV tuner, but I doubt highly you'll find anything for the FP reader. The FP reader is an offshoot MS product, hence why it only works under Internet Explorer, and needs a patch to run on FireFox, and won't work on any other browsers.
-
It's on a separate partition (D
. You can always get a Vista disc off the web - yes it's legal, as long as you have a valid key (which you purchased with your machine).
-
They will send it to you if you buy it, and it's not a Vista disc. It's the recovery media, as found on the D: partition. It includes all the crap and Vista can not be extracted alone from it.

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
The nvidia drivers 180.44/180.48 gave me a big fps boost for my 9200m, highly recommended.
-
just want to know if anyone can put up a tutorial on how to turn off the fan. thanks.
-
um,.... im confused here.... how could you reproduce the "virus problem" if you had done TWO system restores? You turn that machine into what you got from HP when you do that... so... the Norton would be fresh, and Avast would not exist on your system, so there is no way they could conflict after the first, let alone two system restores.
please explain. -
So, i ordered on the 12th, and was estimated to build on the 20th, but it shipped on the 19th and is now in Indiana...only a few more states to go! It's estimated on the 24th.
What does clearance delay mean on Fedex?
1:31 AM Clearance delay -
asked Hp support and in the Uk we can not custom build a laptop apparently according to them there isn't enough demand.
so we cannot order a 64 bit os with the laptop. Does anyone no the cheapest model for the DV5-1012 model. Trying to find it before the end of nov. so i can use the 100 pound cash back. My Aim is to get a price match with John lewis so i need a retail store not online of course if its cheaper online then fair enough. -
try the stratford computer fair on sat and sun, I saw sum dv5ts there for like 100-200 quid cheaper thn market price.
-
My laptop got 56 degrees Celsius under heavy gaming.
Should I be worried ? -
actually i had the same exact thing today because mine was shipped on the 19th too, my estimated delivery sate is also 11/24, but now its status is "Int'l shipment release". what does that mean?
-
where are you two located?
-
Not at all, that's pretty low actually.
-
im near NYC
-
Atlanta, Georgia. Mine says that as well now.
-
anyone know how I get new drivers ? I tried nvida but it says i need to get the ones from HP... but they aren't the new ones that came out yesterday for the 9600gt..

I just bought this DV5 notebook: http://itempage3.auction.co.kr/DetailView.aspx?ItemNo=A513319672&frm2=through
I own Windows Vista Ultimate. Should I install Vista 64, or Vista 32 on this machine? I plan to do mostly gaming on it, source engine games like TF2, Left4Dead, Natural Selection 2, Crysis, etc. Which is a better choice?
(I've been using Vista 32-bit until now on my Lenovo, with a terrible, terrible x3100) -
Maybe it's nothing, but when I checked your link and saw all those small figures, I couldnt tell what the notebook full specs were, I can't really read korean
But when I checked on the HP Site looking for that same model, all the specifications shown on YOUR site fit most of the ones on HP's website, BUT.....
YOURS says it has an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2.0 Ghz, etc.) but HP says it has a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor T3400... At least ME, I trust more on HP, so make sure you get what they say it has...
Good luck with that man!
PS: I don't really know what to tell you about the OS, as: 1) I'm not a gamer, and 2) I've never tried Vista x64
