After doing general research (comparing brands/features etc), I finally settled on a dv5t direct from HP (my config is at the end). However, since the money won't be here for about another month or so (should be getting a nice chunk for Christmas + more for my bday--if it takes that long), I've taken the time to do some casual research on some of the problems described elsewhere in the thread and am still pretty confident in my decision.
At first, I was a little skeptical about buying direct from HP, but once I compared my build and saw what a great value it was vs. in-store models, I was sold. It also convinced me to enlarge my budget slightly & treat myself more.
My dv5t
-Onyx
-Vista Home Premium (32bit)
-Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26GHz)
-WXGA HP BrightView High Def. Display (1280x800)
-3GB DDR2 Memory
-512MB nVidia 9600 GT Graphics
-160GB Hard Drive (5400RPM)
-Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
-Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N MiniCard
-SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW
-12-Cell Lithium Ion Battery
-HP System Recovery DVD
**(Of course I'll take any of the free upgrades they got when the time comes as well)**
Currently, HP's running a $150 rebate and if that holds by the time I'm ready to pull the trigger, my grand total should come out to $1,092.99. Not a bad deal IMO--especially considering what you would have to pay to get that kind of machine from a retailer!
I've already got a Targus 'Chill Pad' that's been collecting dust (bought right before my beloved ze4230 bit the dust) and have my AV/Firewall programs of choice (Avast/Comodo) as well as 2 gen. system utilities (Advanced System Care/CCleaner) at the ready. All that remains is to get my music collection organized & backed up......then sit back & wait for the $$$ to roll in![]()

Just like to say that undervolting cools this thing down a lot. After 2 hours of Left4Dead, CPU was at 66 and GPU was 76. UV'd to 1.150 from 1.250 on T5800.
-
how hot does the nvidia 9600m gt get when gaming?
i plan on undervolting so can anyone tell me before and after undervolting with the nvidia 9600m gt? -
I dont want to sound dumb but I just bought a dv5t. Its build date is Dec. 5th. Specs are at the bottom. Anyways, I am not very computer technical so I had a couple of questions after reading through this forum. Why is everybody doing a clean install of windows vista and what is the major benefits? I am also reading about the computer coming with alot of "crapware" or "bloatware" What does that mean and why are they so bad?
I am only going to use this computer for casual use(surfing web, downloading music and movies) so I was also wondering if my specs are sufficient enough for my needs. Thanks alot for anyones help.
SPECS:

GF9600 got to 77 or so degrees before undervolting. Now it's in the high 60's.
-
It sounds like for casual use, you ordered yourself a machine that will meet, if not exceed your needs in probably every area. I wouldn't worry too much
As for "crapware" and "bloatware".....that pretty much sums up the majority (though not all) of the software that comes pre-installed on computers. 30-day free trials, freeware versions of programs (with limited functionality), so on and so forth. It takes up hard drive space, hogs system resources and is more of a general annoyance than anything (other users may be able to provide you with a more detailed explanation).
Regarding the fresh install of Vista, I'm clueless in that area....searching through the forums might help though
-
People do clean installs because of bloatware, which has been previously explained. From. How I understand it when you uninstall things sometimes some stuff isn't taken out like empty directories and registry entries. This is why people prefer clean installs of the is over just uninstalling. Just makes the process of decrapifying your computer faster than rather on hunting down the stray directories and registry entries, then defragging.

Just ordered my DV5t yesterday. The build date is Dec 8th. It was hard to pass up with the deals HP direct has right now. They even took some money off the final cost because I didn't opt for the free printer and I also got the accidental 2 year warranty. But a day later I'm thinking maybe I should have gotten the 7200 HD with the money I saved. My question is who makes their Hard drives? Also are the 7200 drives as stable? Is it worth it to upgrade now rather than buy an aftermarket drive? I'm thinking yes because a different drive may affect the warranty as well as the accelerator protection it comes with. Any response is greatly apprecciated.

Here's what I "ordered" last night, however they have declined my order even though there is plenty of money in my account and they still charged my account even though it has been declined. Here's my setup once everything gets straightened out...

Undervolting the cpu affects the gpu as well?
-
The dv5 only has one fan so a cooler CPU means a cooler GPU as well I'm guessing.

hi guys ..
am really happy for being here : ) and i want to ask a question please
Am gonna buy Dv5-1135 With Intel® Core™2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz 3MB L2 cash- 3 GB RAM - 250 HD - 15.4 TFT WXGA High-Definition with infinity BrightView & Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT ..
is it a good laptop for normal use ( am not a gammer btw ) .. is there any heat problems ?? and .. About the Screen .. is it good or not ? ( if we compare it with the normal screen )
the last One here Is .. is 1135 better than Acer 5930G For what i want the laptop for or not ?
Thanks in advance guys : ) -
hey ya'll,
i ordered mine on the 12th for $1102 with tax and a mouse with a 30% coupon, no EPP/APP. Today, my dad can get the same thing for $965 with HP EPP. Do i have any hope of getting back $137?
-fmorel90
PS. my dad is calling...getting $100 probably -
Personally, i have not had any heat issues. And to be honest... most ANY modern day laptop is / will be good for "normal" use. This is a good solid, and good looking laptop for everyday, normal use. The infinity screen does have a glare issue. not good for outdoors, or bright environments. I didn't get it for that reason. I love my DV5T. if you're not really a gamer, I would drop to the 9200m gs video card, spend the money on more harddrive, or tv tuner, or something else.
-
Customer Service seems to be pretty good about giving you the credit, even after purchase, especially if you have a current coupon. You may not get the 100% full value of the coupon, but they will give you something. I got most of the value, and I had a really old $400 coupon that wasn't even good any more.
Also, a number of people in this thread have talked about a 21 day price guarantee -- meaning that HP will give you the best price offered from the day you purchase your HP, to 21 days thereafter. I haven't seen this verified on the HP website though. Does anyone know where it is mentioned? I will need to use to it too, cause I just ordered a replacement dv5t (as a new purchase, so I could keep the old one I'm about to return, until I received the new one) -- and there was only a tiny coupon available at the beginning of this week, when I placed the order. I'm hoping that, especially with Christmas coming soon, that a big coupon will be coming forth within my 21 day period! -
Had my dv5 for a couple of days now, did clean install of vista ultimate x64, running p7350
4gb ram
9600m gt
blu ray etc. (you know the drill)
I've never been a gamer but seeing as the machine is capable of it i downloaded a couple of demos and WOW! i'm addicted.
Just ran 3dmark06 as well, score of 4451 with res: 1280x800,
is this any good? -
Dansweet: I get 4336 with 2GB ram and a 2.0 Ghz T5800.
-
Thanks alot Tenspeed for your help : )
-
Ram isnt that crucial during gaming though is it? I thought it was more to do with the latency of the memory rather than the amount?
My score doesn't really bother me but its interesting to see a variation between stock models! -
honestly, the 3Dmark06 score of 4000 for this laptop is pretty poor when you compare it to the acer 5930G, which got 5500. i wonder if there is such a gap between these 2 laptops in terms of in-game performance
-
fmorel90-- what is EPP/APP that you refer to????
-
Guys ..
Which screen is better ??
Hp Dv5-1135 = TFT WXGA High-Definition with infinity Or
OR
Acer 5930 G = TFT WXGA CrystalBrite
it's very important for me to know it Plz ..coz i wanna buy One of them
And what i mean by better is ( less reflection and image Quality etc... )
Thanks in advance -
The gap is due to the fact tht HP dv5t has got 9600M GT with DDR2 memory and Acer 5930g has 9600M GT with GDDR3 memory. Rest all is same, and yea GDDR3 gives u more 3DMark06 points and better gaming performance.
-
buying my mom a laptop. she does mainly email, music and some pix. no games
can get hp dv5 for $678 shipped. w/ these specs. is this a fair, good or great deal? thanks

Hasham11 explained the reason pretty well. I would only like to add that the HP gets more like 4500, not 4000 as you stated.
-
If I were you, I would get the 64-bit Vista OS because the 32-bit Vista OS will only recognize up to 3Gb of RAM. Although, she will have to do a bit of driver hunting for the 64-bit. Just a thought.
-
APP is Academic Purchase Program (for students)
EPP is Employee " " (i got a code from Addison Avenue...not quite sure what it represents)
HP EPP is the HP Employee discount, higher than EPP. -
yeah, i know that GDDR3 accounts for the difference, but its a full 1000 points! GDDR3 does not outclass the DDR2 memory that much, cuz they have the same bandwith.
in any case, has anyone tested the performance difference between these memory types? there was a review comparing a 8600GT DDR2 against a 8600GT GDDR3 in terms of game framerates, and in certain games, the 8600GT DDR2 outclassed the GDDR3. but on average, the GDDR3 was better by 1 or 2 frames er second. is this consistent? -
I realize that she will not utilize the full 4gb. She will get about 3.5. I am not going 64bit because I am here IT dept. and less work for me is better and this is more machine than she needs to email grandpa. THe 4gb of ram is free right now, as is 3gb, so it was no difference to me.

Does anyone know how to get sound from the headphones while getting video from the HDMI? It seems whenever you plug in the HDMI cable, the sound only goes out the HDMI.
-
hey blue...
most of us are HP users, in this forum.. can't really compare an acer screen to an hp screen.. are you going into the acer forum, and asking this same question there? i would search google, for an "acer screen vs. hp screen" type of search to be honest. -
what is it, that you are trying to do exactly?
-
when people say raise the notebook for heat issues...how do you do it?
-
Physically lift the notebook off the table. You could use a stand thats built for this or just use a book on each end. It just allows more ventilation.
-
having the 12 cell battery works as a built in elevation tool, as well.
-
I suspect you can get essentially the same performance between any two machines if you outfit them both with the same GPU, CPU and a drive of the same speed.
In my case I got a nice machine that will score a bit above 4000 I think, (as I recall it might be about 4100 or 4300) and it cost me about $870. What does the Acer 5930G cost? -
New bios: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2100&product=3809722
Any changes? Overclocking? -
Hi Tenspeed
what do you mean By( HP users, in this forum.. can't really compare an acer screen to an hp screen ) ??
Do you mean there is no way to compare hp with Acer ? -
I have my laptop pluggged into the TV via HDMI, but I don't want to disturb anyone else in the room, so I'd like to plug headphones into the laptop. Sound is available from the TV, but there's nothing through the headphones.
-
I guess what I mean is, how are we going to compare one with the other, when we only own the HP. I can't imagine there are many, if any folks, who own both, in order to compare the two side by side. That's why I asked if you asked the Acer owners if they could compare as well, maybe they own an HP and and Acer together. I don't know. The thread that you posted your original question in was the Official DV5T Owner's thread. That means, most anyone who would read this, owns an HP DV5T, and not an Acer. I was merely trying to get your question directed to the proper people who could answer it.
-
anyone got a picture of dv5 open in the bottom? I want to see the HHD, wifi, memory locations. and check if it is easy to upgrade these and cpu.
-
anyone know the difference between DV5T 1000 and DV5T 1100?
-
When You've got it plugged into your tv through hdmi Click - start - control panel - hardware and sound - sound - and select "speakers and dual headphones" and click okay or apply.
If you're using clasic control panel click - start - control panel - sound - and choose the speakers and dual headphone option same as above. -
DV5T 1100 is the special edition laptop.
-
Hey, I just recently ordered my DV5T and am really excited to get it.
However, there is one problem. While I was making my order, I decided to subscribe to Norton's Antivirus (15 months). But now, after I've read the problems of Norton such as the amount of space it uses up, I don't want it in my system and want that $49 back! My computer has not arrived yet, so is there anything I can do to get my money back? Thanks for the help -
Call them and check it out.
-
i am having this problem with my nvidia 9600m gt graphics card... i installed the newest drivers from laptopvideo2go.com and some icons and other things seem pixelated..am i the only one with this problem?
is this a driver issue? because i also had another dv5t but with the 9200m and it had the same problem so i returned it and got this one hoping it was just the graphics card.
any ideas? -
Does anybody know why would I get 3,3 in WEI using this system?
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
