Latest prices I'm getting via EPP discount, and costco:

    Config: dv5t, P7350 (2ghz) 2gb mem, 250gb disk, Bronze, 256mb Nvidia 9200M GS, 1280x800 brightview, 32bit Vista, standard dvd, hi cap 6cell battery:

Costco: $892 including CA state tax and shipping
EPP Discount: $861 including CA state tax and shipping

Anybody know a way to beat that? Also, I'm considering waiting a few days to see if any last minute discount desperation measures kick in

I got dv5t: P7350, 4GB Ram, 250GB HHD, Intel graphic, bluetooth, fingerprint, 6 cell battery: total $450 before tax. I was using MS 40% cashback on blackfriday. I sold my old laptop for $390. with $60 difference, I got a new and more feature laptop.

I don't think they will be offering that deal again so it wouldn't really help that poster.

Well if you can wait a year, you might want to wait for Windows 7 and the new USB 3.0? If not, I would just go with Costco and their hassle-free 60 day return window

Right, my quote above factors in an extra $100 for the Nvidia graphics. And that Microsoft cashback is gonna take awhile to get, if you get it at all.

So I finally got around to undervolting. Seems to be working well, temps down from 84C to about 74C under Orthos stress test. I'm checking the battery now, and it seems to be performing well (under power saver mode, used about 40% in an hour under constant use of internet). I've used the following voltages:

    SuperLFM (6 x) .925
    1 - 6x: .9625
    2 - 7x: .9875
    3 - 8x: 1.0125
    4 - 9x: 1.0250

Anyone have anything different? See specs in my sig.

    For me, I got:
    1 - 6.0x : .95
    2 - 7.0x : .9625
    3 - 8.0x : .9750
    4 - 9.0x : .9875

    I have T9400 and 9600M GT

the dv5 is better, IMO. Bigger screen, better processor. That is, unless, you want a smaller laptop....

I was thinking the DV5 is probably better. It has a bluray drive and bigger screen also larger hardrive. What I dont understand is the difference with the following,

intel core duo processor t5800 / intel centrion 2 processor p7350
intel graphics media accel 4500mhd / intel graphics accel x4500
    microprocessor cache 2 mb L2 cache / microprocessor 3mb L2 cache
wireless 802.11b/g wlan / wireless intel wifi link 5100agn

The size is not a issue to me at all.

    Thanks for the help :D

The p series processor is the newer, lower voltage processors. I'm not sure if there's a diffference in the graphics. The intel 5100agn is capable of using the n wireless standard, which is faster than g. I would totally go for the dv5

I could have selected Nvidia graphic card option but I don't game on laptop and want battery to last longer and cooler. Intel graphic is perfect for non-gamers. with graphic card, it cost $100 more or $60 more after 40% cashback.

    Depends on the configuration. Link?
Make sure you get the integrated Intel graphics with the dv5t if you don't game. You can get 3 - 3.5 hours of life out of the high-capacity 6-cell and it runs much cooler.

well, I got Intel graphic card and P7350, and my dv5t lasted me only 2 hours with one browser open. LCD brighness is about 60%. I have no idea why some people here claim 3 hours. I tested and tested again and always ended up with 2 hours with 6 cell battery.

also the heat is much worse than my old cheap gateway laptop. I turned "Fan always on" off from bios. cpu heat is mostly at 60c at idle and 70c at load.

I wonder how worse the heat is for those laptop with Nvidia laptops. HP design is flaw with heat and battery.

Hey everyone, quick question so I don't screw anything up.

Bought the dv5t and it's on the way to my house.
    2.0Ghz T5800 (I think)
    NVIDIA 9200 256MB
    2GB RAM
    250 HDD
    Blu-Ray/DVDRW
    Bluetooth and Wireless Mini-N
    Fingerprint reader

    Just wondering two things:

Upgrading RAM - I'm guessing it will be coming with (2) 1GB sticks in it, so I'll have to buy (2) 2GB sticks 800mhz right? Crucial work well?

USB TV Tuner - Which would you recommend for this machine?

Hey, is there a page with all the hardware specs? I haven't found any page that lists it in detail. For e.g., what hardware chip is the ethernet (wireless is Intel 5100 but what is the wired one)?

What temps do the GPUs average (if gaming? if idle)?

    Thanks.

    CPU whine?

    You mean fan whine/noise?

The CPU doesn't make any sounds, at least it's not designed too. :D
If it is making whining sounds, I'd have it checked out and call the X-files.

    .8750V for ALL multipliers.

The difference we have is that I have the 9200GS card and you have the GT.
I have the P8400, you have the P8600

    Your voltages seem too high.
Also, the P8400 does not have 9X.
    We get
    6x
    6x
    7x
    8x
CPU max speed reported is 2.26/2.12GHz
And, as I said, mine are all at .8750V, VERY stable, no BSOD, idles at under 80F, surfs at about 82-85F. Heavy video processing bumps temps to low 100's-110'sF

Keep the stress test running, and drop the voltages 1 step at a time, and run it for about 30second to 1 minute.
The worst the will happen is that you will have to reboot, as the system will restart at correct voltage. Once you get the BSOD, then you can go up 1 step and stress again. Do it for all multipliers.
I found that if the higher multipliers can handle a certain voltage, with the stress test running, the the lower multi's can obviously handle that voltage and lower.

there's more, just search "whine" in this forum.

It's not the fans and the hd, therefore people call it cpu whine.

    Ello ello all!

I recently bought a new wireless mouse and when I was installing the software the CD drive was really really loud. Is this normal? I very rarely have any discs in the drive so this was my first time noticing it. Should I contact HP or is it normal?

Also, I am looking to configure a dv5t for my dad. Any deals going on I should be aware of?

    Thanks all!

Does anyone know of a free program to play blu-rays with other than quick play? I am trying to play the Dark Knight and it is super laggy, and think it is because the drivers/firmware isnt up to date in quick play. Quick play says everything is up to date though. Thanks

Mine has been doing this a lot lately. I chatted with HP this morning and downloaded new drivers, but it doesn't help.

    Few questions guys:

My dad is looking to order a dv5t. Both my girlfriend and myself own one and they have been great, so I figured it would be a great choice for my dad.

He is mainly an internet and email kind of guy, so he doesn't need anything to crazy but I do want to configure him something that wont be too slow. He does use programs like MS Office from time to time for work and some photo software here and there.

    - When it comes to CPU, is the P7350 performance worth the extra $75 over the T5800?

    - He doesn't game much, mainly just online casino games here and there and what not. Should he go with the integrated gfx or the 9200M?

    - Is it worth for him to buy a recovery DVD?

    - In everyones general opinion, should we order now or does anyone smell a nice coupon coming along around the New Year?

Now a question regarding my dv5t..

Looking to upgrade my video drivers, looking to get the ones through nVidia. I forgot the proper way to install a new set. :( Help me out folks! :D

Hello all. Just took my new dv5t out of the box this morning and am in the process of cleaning out all the garbage that came pre-loaded on it.
Since I assume most of them come loaded with the same junk programs, I was hoping somebody might be able to tell me which things are completely unnecessary. I don't trust myself to do the clean load of Vista, as I'm not a truly techie guy, and I have Vista Ultimate which seems to make a clean load even more difficult. I want to strip off as much as possible, outside of things that are needed to just make the thing run. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.

And to Rusch, the 7350 is worth it, but the integrated gfx should be just fine as long as he's sticking to simple casino games and the occasional dvd watching. That's my two cents.

If you customized your dv5t it will take a little time to configure. When I ordered mine during the 40% live.com cash back promo, I was supposed to wait about 2 weeks for configuration, but it actually shipped a few days sooner!
    Good luck!

There's good news/bad news on the coupon front: There is a new 30% off coupon NB4355. It may have already expired, but some people in the 30% Off thread have been having good luck by calling HP and asking the customer rep to apply the coupon anyway. You can also remind HP of 2 important factors: One, there is a 21 day Price Guarantee in which HP will give the lowest price in 21 days to anyone who purchased within the last 21 days. Also, we now have until January 15th to return our laptops (because of the holiday policy). So that means that, technically, we could return our laptop and buy a new one USING THE NEW COUPON!!! I did that just yesterday, and it worked. I had, in early December, purchased a replacement dv5t for one that was defective (that's another story -- don't ask. . .) When I tried to use the NB4355 coupon yesterday for that replacement purchase, the customer service rep told me that I was too late because my 21 days had expired, but I reminded her that I could (and would) return my laptop and just order another one, using the coupon. She gave me the discount!!! :D

This has probably been discussed before but I don't really want to go through 400 pgs! Right now I have the Targus chill mat that I got with my laptop in August and it's been failing lately. I just looked into it and saw that it's known to be bad and contains lead (eek!) so I'm looking to buy I new cooling mat. I don't really know how to see how hot my laptop is getting but it felt pretty hot when I was playing Mass Effect today especially in the back left corner. Any recommendations?

Oh and one other thing! My left mouse button has sunk in slightly so it's a bit lower than the right one. I wouldn't be concerned but it got stuck the other day and I'm worried it may get stuck when I'm doing something important. Perhaps there's dirt stuck under it? I have an external mouse I just prefer not to use it.

    Playing MKV files fine

Guys, I installed the k-like pack as I did on my previous laptop but on the dv5t the movies lag often, even with cpu on 40%. Anybody playing MKV files smoothly can give me a tip?

I'm not sure if the problem is with the codec pack but i'm using the Vista Codec Pack ( http://www.shark007.net) along with the x64 addon for 64-bit vista. i played a sample mkv file and it played fine. make sure to uninstall the k-lite pack first if you are going to use the vista codec pack.

I don't know what is this x64 addon you're talking about but I did remove the k-lite pack and installed this Vista Codec Pack you mentioned. Now the movie plays fine!!! :) Thanks!

Hey all dv5t people, can anyone tell me if their HD seems noisy? ESPECIALLY until the laptop has been on for 5 minutes, after that it calms down, but still reads/writes periodically accompanied by kinda loud noise, not LOUD, but loud enough to hear in a quiet room.

I have the Fujitsu (?) MHZ2160BH 160GB HD, is it no good if its making noise? This is a 4 day old laptop...can someone please let me know if their HD makes audible scratching typa noises while reading/writing? Its quiet when its just idle..

And how about the CPU whine lol...? Im still obsessing over that..

On a plus side, my dv5t boots vista so quick that the Vista Logo sound (the sound accompanying the Vista logo at startup) and the desktop sound (that beep when your desktop is displayed) play almost at the same time. Either it boots so quick it plays both sounds quick, or theres already some registry error lol...

It takes about 30 seconds to boot (almost 100%, it takes another 30 seconds or a minute to load all of Vistas stuff, like the UAC doesnt seem to work until a minute after logging on, but all else works.)

ALLLSO the battery monitor seems spaced out until the laptop has been on for a minute, as if its loading or something..make sense...?

Someone please take the time to listen to their laptops, ive been posting this stuff to no avail...

if you are running 64-bit vista then also download and install the addon from here: http://www.shark007.net/x64components.html

if you are using 32-bit vista then your already good to go, no need to download from that address...

There are a bunch of notebook coolers in the market. I wanted something that I can use on my lap. Unfortunately, many of them are designed to be on a desk. One I found that uses a fan is the Antec notebook cooler 200. But is' pricey. I got the Thermaltake iXoft. It doesn't use a fan. It's a mat that has some chemicals inside that will liquify and crystalize as it heats up and then cools. A lot of people have reviewed it and like it. A few others have not.

I just ordered yesterday up a refurished one from the thermaltakestore.com for almost half the price it retails for.

If you are looking for other fan based coolers, look at the thermaltake and antec websites, each make a few models. There's other web sites that review this stuff. I spent a few hours surfing to research them all. Good luck.
