wow, people at corporate will say anything. They never even published the F.11 revision even though they are shipping it on units. Until i see an actualy published revision or atleast some sort of internal memo, i'm just gonna chalk it up to chatter and try another method. Cudo's to trying, and yes i submitted a ticket via your link. Keep up the preasure and hopefully you will be rewarded and soon.

Well, I had an issue with them not releasing F.11 for public consumption yet, but then it kinda makes sense....
They probably didnt release it becasue its an interim BIOS, and they will just directly release the new BIOS which enables HYBRID CROSSFIRE
    OR SO I HOPE!
thanks for pushing the requests though!

This is much more progress than has been made previously on this. We may finally be able to use all the performance we payed for. And yes, I believe that RAM will work but it has a lower frequency than the memory it comes with. There's both good and bad things about that, but if you can find a set that's DDR2-800 PC-6400 that would be better.

Just wondering if there are any "must-have" upgrades or any software changes/additions/deletions people usually do for this laptop?

For deletions and stuff, just getting rid of the usual bloatware or, best of all, a clean install of vista.

As he said, there's a sticky already. And the bloatware would basically be anything that doesn't come with a fresh install of Vista.

After owning this dv5z for a couple weeks, I've decided there are a few things I really don't like about it... The battery is on the same side of the body as the CPU/heatsink, so it always cooks. Heat really kills LiIon batteries. My Asus M6Ne had a better design - the battery is on the front of the body, at the farthest possible point away from the CPU.

The lighted logo on the display cover is really annoying. It's already annoying that this thing has such a high power draw / low battery life, but then they go and add a completely useless light to drain even more power. It doesn't seem that there's a software switch to disable it either; I'll probably wind up opening the display enclosure and disconnecting it. If they wanted to add an LED to the case, why couldn't they have made it something useful, like a way to illuminate the keyboard in the dark?

I just disassembled the whole thing to get to the heatsink so I could apply some ArcticSilver to it. What a pain, you have to remove *everything* else before you can get to the processor. Whoever designed this case really didn't care about making it easy to replace the processor or to clean the fan. Stupid. (And it seems that the AS hasn't made any difference at all in the temperatures. Oh well.)

The touchpad buttons still feel bad to me, but I guess I've gotten used to the keyboard by now. I'm beginning to wish it had an S-video output, since my TVs at home are all still analog. Hmm...

There should be an illuminated keyboard on some of the newer highend models. As for the lighted logo, all the new companies are doing that, my friend jsut got the new 18" acer and it's logo lights up too, but looks much better than the HP one.

What is so good about this arctic silver stuff?

    Hi Guys!

Last Week I bought a DV5z, but yesterday I received a mail and contains that: "Thank you for your recent order with HP Home & Home Office Store. We regret that we are unable to accept it".
I called HP but they didn't give me any information, just the same at mail.

Any know why they declined my order? and if I can require the order to be procesed? or what to do?

    Thanks!

Arctic Silver is one of the best thermal compounds out there. Unfortunately, if the heatsink and fan are limited, there's only so much AS5 can do. Although, I have to admit it made quite a difference on my brother's HP Pavillion ZD7000 laptop. His laptop used to shut down from the cpu overheating. After I applied AS5 to it, it ran considerably cooler and doesn't even come close to overheating now.

My first two laptops were Sony VAIOs, but then I discovered that Asus was their ODM and I could get nearly identical features without paying for the Sony name. I don't think Asus would cost more than HP. But, when I was looking for a new machine, there were no Asus laptops available built on the AMD Puma platform, so they lost my business. Now I see they have an M51Ta selling at NewEgg, but it doesn't have the screen resolution I want (15" 1680x1050 or 1920x1200) so they're still out of the running. Possibly I should have waited for a Clevo or Sager, dunno.

Here is what I got in response from HP software management. Do they think that they are dealing with people who don't know what they are talking about?? Anyways, you can also see my reply and I'll post again when they get back to me. I also used the links to pictures of the motherboard that were posted here. Hopefully, the author wouldn't mind.

Don't bother with HP Tech Support - below I present what I believe to be the longest exchange of emails possible with them regarding this topic (3 weeks worth). They confirmed, they denied, they zigged, and they zagged - in the end, like all idiots, they drug me down to their level and beat me with experience.

I've edited this to remove some personal info and place it in the order in which it occurred. Behold, the ignorance of HP Tech support...

ME: How do I enable (or is it possible) Hybrid Crossfire on the dv5z between the integrated graphics chip (Radeon 3200) and the Radeon 3450 card? ATIindicates that these two systems are compatible with Hybrid Crossfire but I do not see the option in the BIOS? Thank you.

It appears to only recognize the HD 3450 card.

    Me:
    Sam,
    1. If what you said was true (that my DV5Z will not run Hybrid Crossfire), that means the previous technical representative, when reviewing my computer specifications, specifically lied to me when he stated " I would like to confirm you that HP dv5z notebook PC series can make use of the Hybrid Crossfire technology using the integrated GPU256MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3450 Graphics card." If so, this is product misrepresentation and I should be duly compensated for purchasing a computer under false pretense.
    2. Contrary to your statement, the HP dv5z that I have DOES have a AMD 780 series chipset (see the below graphic taken directly from the computer when shows the chipset as AMD 780G). So you lied as well. According to your own logic,Cross Fire should work.

So PLEASE have someone who REALLY knows what they are talking about, let me know how to enable Cross Fire on this computer. And, if it is not possible, WHY HP tech support (as shown below) says it is possible.
It SHOULD be possible - I have a 780G chipset with a Radeon 3450 card just as indicated on your graphic.
PLEASE SEND THIS TO A SUPERVISOR OR SOMEONE WHO REALLY KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!

    M e: Susan,

I still cannot get hybrid crossfire enabled on this computer. Please see my comments regarding the steps you provided below.
    1. I have latest BIOS (F.11 shipped with computer which is even more up to date than the latest available on the website).
    2. 3450 in in primary PCI
    3. The link you gave for the latest Catalyst drivers was for32 bit Vista. As I have 64bit Vista, I downloaded those instead. Note that these ATI drivers are NOT meant for laptop computers (you would think that HP support would know that) and will therefore not install in them without being modified. So basically you told me to install something that cannot typically be done.
Note that it IS possible to install the catalyst 8.8 drivers on a laptop IF they are modified using "mobility modder" (see http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php). Using this tool, I wasable to successfully install the Catalyst 8.8 suite on my laptop.
EVEN THEN - hybridcrossfire is still not an option.
SO THEQUESTION REMAINS - HOW CAN I ENABLE HYBRID CROSSFIRE ON THIS LAPTOP - IT HAS THE CORRECT 780G CHIPSET AND RADEON 3450 CARDTO MAKE IT WORK!!!
I am very frustrated with HP support as you have given me continually conflicting advice regarding hybrid crossfire as well as offered up incorrect drivers etc. Please send this to a supervisor who really knows how to enable hybrid crossfire.

    Enabling ATI CrossFireX
When a ATI CrossFireX configuration is detected for the first time by the ATI Catalyst display driver, ATI CrossFireX is automatically enabled, and the best possible GPU combination is selected based on your hardware configuration. If necessary, you can change the existing ATI CrossFireX configuration using the following procedure.
From the Graphics Settings tree in the ATI Catalyst Control Center software, click CrossFire™.From the Graphics Adapter list, select the graphics card that acts as theDisplay GPU.Select Enable CrossFire™.

Me: The Catalyst 8.9 drivers are not meant for laptops. They do not enable hybrid crossfire on my dv5z laptop. Do you not have a laptop that you can test this on? Mine is BRAND NEW! You should be able to test out anything you are telling me. You CAN NOT install catalyst drivers directly from ATIs website on an HP laptop computer.
So - How do I enable Hybrid Crossfire?

I did a research on this issue. Even though this feature is available on AMD / ATI 's, it is totally dependant on the notebook manufacturer to embed it in the notebook.
I regret to inform that it may not be a feature of your notebook and thus you are not able to use that feature. I apologize for all the inconvenience caused. I appreciate the level of patience you have shown so far.
    My sincere apologies again.

    Me: Matthew,
" it is totally dependant on the notebook manufacturer to embed it in the notebook"

I think you mean, it is totally dependant on the notebook manufacturer to ENABLE it in the notebook. That I agree with - the hardware is already there, however HP must enable the use of both graphics cards within the BIOS. It is absolutely unthinkable and ridiculous that a feature which could provide such performance gains is crippled by the manufacturer of the notebook (HP). When is HP going to realize this and release a BIOS that enables this feature? I paid for the hardware - I should be able to utilize it to its fullest.

HP: Thank you for writing to HP Total Care.
The Hybrid CrossFire requires two components: a Hybrid CrossFire chipset and supporting graphics card. Your HP Pavilion dv5z-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook does not have Hybrid CrossFire chipset. Hence, even updating bios will not add this feature to the notebook.

Me: It does have a Hyrbid CrossFire chipset - a "Puma" based 780G chipset with a Radeon 3450 graphics card. See the attached graphic taken directly from the computer which shows the correct chipset. We have already been over this before about 10 emails ago. The only reason it does not work is the BIOS does not allow it.
I am sick of getting a different HP tech support representative every time we email back and forth - you obviously do not read through the entire email chain. You only give me a response straight off of your stupid canned response list. Please elevate this to the next level of technical support.

Why are people wasting their time with these low level tech support people. They are not going to be able to help us. most of them have no idea what they are saying. if they say it's enabled, are you planning to sue the company to hold them accountable? it's just a waste of time. you can file as many tickets as you like, but unless you atleast go up through corporate escalations, your not going to get anywhere. If it's going to be enabled, were going to need bios support and that's where it gets the hardest. complaining to india (or who knows where else) is not going to get that.

Hmm...i just checked out the Asus on neweggs site, and it looks good, i like the fact that it has the 3650 video, which is better than the one in my dv5z...but fact is, for what i paid, (around 800 after coupon) for a laptop w/ a bluray player, and 1680x1050 resolution, and a dedicated graphics (low end though it may be, HD-3450)....the dv5z was the way to go, and it holds up nicely in comparison.

The clevo/sager idea is a great one, and what I intended on buying before the dv5z deal came around….but again, the $$ would have been more.

Windows update is showing a driver update for the AMD sata controller. doesn't seem to make much of a visable difference, just thought i'd put it out there that an update exists.

I just purchased a HP DV5-1007tx with 4GB RAM and 512MB VRAM. Among the many games I have installed, I have the game FEAR.

Now what's happening is I run the game fine with 200FPS or whateva for about 2 minutes. No lag, just great gaming... Then, all of a sudden that drops to 20FPS and it starts lagging like heck. Not just the gameplay but the menu and any video.

    What gives?

Yes ali, I had posted (on the previous page) the latest updates on that front and NOW I am in direct contact with the R&D dept of HP and fwd them the details they needed and the e-mails from AMD I had recieved. Looks like there is still hope on getting the HYBRID CROSSFIRE and SURROUNDVIEW enabled on our laptops.
AMD's e-mail basically said, get HP to enable SURROUNDVIEW in the BIOS and you will automatically get HYBRID CROSSFIRE in CATALYST. I have communicated this to HP's R&D as well!

Mantikos, you are doing a great job! Thanks! I was trying to contact HP to get some information about hybrid CrossfireX but I get nothing. :(
But Don't forget the DV7z series, tell R&D about both notebook! That could help future buyers!

    Good Luck!

I think for the last two people, this is the dv5z forums, not the dv5t forums - two similar, but different laptops.

    According to HP's service manual

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf

dv5z models with HD 3450 comes with AMD M770 chipset instead of M780G. So HD 3200 is not available and Hybrid Crossfire is not supported.

I have a similiar spec Compaq Presario CQ40 notebook with Turion X2 RM-70 and HD3450. According to the service manual, mine comes with M770 northbridge, hence hyrid xfire is not supported. Only those models with integrated HD3200 comes with M780G chipset. Can anyone open up the notebook and confirm the chipset?

    hey.

just got a quick question or problem.

So my webcam works with the tutorial and youcam and aim.

but when i try to go to chats.aim.com.

    the webcam wont turn on.
the audio works on the site, but the webcam just wont work.
and there is nothing to click that turns the webcam on, on the computer.

so wondering if someone could test there dv5z out and see if they have the same problem at that place.

    its just buggin me.

    Thanks.

    @wyemarn
many dv5z users have confirmed 780G chipset by opening their notebooks and uploaded images as well.
