Well I mean if the he's busy with work, he's busy with work. I know how it is to get tied up with things. On that note I hope for all our sakes that he is really getting somewhere with HP with the hybrid crossfire issue.

In other news, I just got my dv7z yesterday. And there is something wrong with the screen. Side by side against the dv5, the dv7 screen is 50% dimmer and some sort of weird parabolic brightness. I can't get even brightness across the whole screen and if i mode my head, different parts of the screen light up differently. Makes me think i should send this back instead of the dv5.

HERE YOU GO IMPATIENT HATERS AND DOUBTERS:

This decisively proves the existence of the HD3200 as IGP and the HD 3450.
This has also been confirmed by AMD (after looking at the images), the
manufacturer of the chipset, processor and the graphics card
AMD claims HP needs to enable 'SURROUNDVIEW' (an AMD technology) in its BIOS

Hello ,
Thank you for writing back to us.
I apologize for the delay caused in responding you.
, I would like to inform you that after discussing the issue with our
Technical Department, we have concluded that it is not possible to use the
Hybrid Crossfire featureis a Notebook PC as their is only one Graphics card
on the Motherboard of the Notebook and the Hybrid Crossfire feature requires
two Graphics card. All the HP Notebooks are preinstalled only witha single
Graphics card integrated on the Motherboard andtheir is no option to use an
additional Graphics card as in Desktops.
I can understand your frastration towards this issue. Further, it was also
found that the chipset on the picture have sent is not clear as the chipset
is completely white in colour which does not happen in general.
However, if you are very sure that their are two graphic card on the
Motherboard, then I request you to get back to us with the clear pictures so
that I can reescalate the case to our Advance Reasearch Department.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to you.

Ialso want to let you know I have been in touch with AMD onbehalf of a
forum of a few 100 very disappointed customers of HP. These customers like
me have been seeking the HYBRID CROSSFIRE feature from HP for a long time
and have been given the run around by your tech support.
In the process, some of our 100+ members have also contacted AMD, the
manufacturer of our 780G chipset with HD3200 built in to the Northbridge and
the manufacturers of the HD3450 graphics cards we have and the manufacturers
of the Turion processors and the PUMA platform the DV5Z is based upon. AMD
has confirmed, HP has disabled'SurroundView' in the F.11 BIOS and needs to
enable it in order for us to use 'SurroundView' and HYBRID CROSSFIRE. AMD's
engineers have confirmed that on HP enabling the 'SurroundView'option in the
BIOS, HYBRID CROSSFIRE will automatically work in theATI CATALYST CONTROL
CENTER. Please forward this latest update from AMD to your R&D team.

I am sorry to say, butyou are absolutely wrong.
My laptop has both the HD3450 dedicated and the HD3200 on board (as a part
of the 780G chipset) the HD3200 is integrated into the Northbridge (IGP),
and the HD3450 is an add-on card.

We have multiple DV5Zs here with HD3450 andneed HP to enable HYBRID
CROSSFIRE vis theBIOS. You have handicapped the hardware we have paid for by
disbaling the HYBRID CROSSFIRE this needs to fixed immediately viaanew BIOS
release
unlike some ppl, I have a job that keeps me busy
so glad I could be of f***ing help -
sounds like you are only other person here with a REAL job...lol -
Havent had a chance to even see the AMD undervolting guide let alone make it to my liking
-
I would rather have CROSSFIRE, while you would rather make comments bout ppl who try and help -
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people? Every forum I go to, it's swarmed by a-holes that just have to discredit everyone and make everyone's life less pleasant. Whenever someone tries to help, they get insulted. Is there a purpose to that, or are some people really just so petty that they take the opportunity of an anonymous forum to make the world a worse place?
People don't HAVE to help you. People don't HAVE to be at your beck and call or fix their opinions to your liking or prioritize their busy lives to suit your whims. If someone even so much as says that they might, maybe help you in some small way that takes even a minute from their day without any pay to them.... say thank you. Jesus. -
I'm always grateful for whatever help comes in the way, however, reading those emails, it's not like there's anything new about them. If you read pages before this one, you'll find that there are others who've done pretty much the same and got the same responses.
Well as for the undervolting guide, the reason for my grumpiness is that others have also been asking the same thing, "How come it works for you while for the rest it doesn't?"
Instead of replying at the attacks, he can easily just answer that question. "I have no idea, maybe because that guide isn't that much authentic" or something, instead of leaving people hanging on the line, telling the truth helps more.
This just doesn't go to Mantikos, but to everyone else who does the same.
@Xodarap: "People don't HAVE to help you. People don't HAVE to be at your beck and call or fix their opinions to your liking or prioritize their busy lives to suit your whims. If someone even so much as says that they might, maybe help you in some small way that takes even a minute from their day without any pay to them.... say thank you. Jesus."
I'm pretty sure I know this, thats why I'm also trying to do things on my own. It just so happened that I found his guide that people seemed to find not working and commented on it. -
Moreover, the guide I made, is WIP (as stated in the guide itself) I still (unfortunately) have the time to fix it up to where I want it to be
and btw, there is a guy on the AMD UnderVolting forum that had his voltage reduced to 0.8V, so neithe is it fake, nor is it BS, nor is it something I dreamed up...its A WIP....as in not perfect!
Its a 1/2 *** guide, not the freakin bible!
EDIT:
Obv, you dont want the CROSSFIRE issue to be the emphasis, since you dont have the HD3450...it FINALLY makes sense...I understand your pt of view, but please realize, we are walking down different paths here in that case -
Marc, I wasn't meaning to point a finger at you. I was much more concerned with SMAN's comment about just trying to drum up rep. Impatience, on the other hand, is always understandable.
Still, whether his help is effective or not doesn't matter; what matters is only that he's trying to help. He doesn't have to come in here and share his results. Nor is he under any obligation to figure out how others can share in his undervolting success. -
Wow, it seems like no one has heard of sarcasim. Anyways, on the issue of rep power, it doesn't show me at 5 or anything, it says i have 1 just like allmsot everyone else.
-
you can check how many you have by trynna give yourself a rep point and it will tell u how many u have...I have 4...I believe you have 5...cause ur green dot had the same message as mine before I gave you a rep and now its different.
Anyhow, sorry if I misconstrued your sarcasm for str8 hate, I am sorry the work is getting to me!
Trust me, I am honestly trynna get the HYBRID CROSSFIRE working desp. -
I can't wait for hybrid crossfire too, namly so that i can turn off the 3450 to save power when i'm running on batteries. I may have drummed up a developer contact for this too. They want me to send my dv5 to a specific tech at the corporate facility in texas so they can see what is causing the bug with their smartprotect drivers. Might be an interesting path to take to see if he can shed some light on bios updates.
-
Hey peeps,
Sorry quite a lot to read through, I was wondering which of the dvt5 range has the 9600GT DRR 3 version? -
grh3y: This is the dv5 *z* thread. You want the dv5 *t* thread over there
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=277341 -
Thanks mate.
-
Anyway I hope we're clear now, no personal attacks. Yes we do have different point of views but we're all still on the same side here vs. HP -
-
Oui, so i got off the phone with my case manager today. They are sending me another dv7z to replace the one that arrived friday. This will be the 4th hp laptop in 3 months. God bless those extended warentee plans, but curse their build quality.
-
Anything new on the dv5z crossfore issue from anyone?? bumpity bump!!!
-
Summary: It's still vague, but they say they're looking into it. Concessions: 1) Yes, there IS a 3200 on the board; 2) there should be a BIOS entry to enable it; 3) HP tech don't really know what they're doing... -
I'm also finding that my SSD, which is supposed to have a 170MB/sec max read rate, is topping out at 133MB/sec. Someone on the OCZ forum mentioned that IBM Thinkpads restrict their SATA ports to run at 150MB/sec max, as a power saving measure. It's beginning to look like HP has done something similar here. Can anyone else verify if this is the case? You don't need an SSD, just a regular hard drive with a 8 or 16MB cache ought to prove it. Measure your burst read speed for 8MB worth of data (with no other processes active).
-
You do know that regular SATA tops out at 150MB/sec while SATA2 goes up to 300MB/Sec? With that said, i'm pretty sure there was some spec i was reading that said these laptops only have a sata1 port.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA -
The Puma chipset supports SATA2 300MB/sec. It's possible that I'm just seeing a speed limit inherent to this OCZ drive, despite their claims of 170MB/sec top. But it may also be yet another aspect of the chipset that HP intentionally crippled. Dunno, trying to find out.
-
-
First, let me state that when the Puma platform came out, what really impressed me, besides the graphic power of the IGP (3200), was both the crossfire feature between the 3200 and the 3450 and also the Power Express of only using the 3450 when it was needed. AMD really provided a good platform and I thought that the OEMs would really push this. However, HP at least, did not enable this.
And I wish you all the luck in getting HP to enable crossfire for your laptops if HP can/will.
But how do I say this nicely without getting a flame war sent at me.
You did not buy the crossfire feature and HP is under no obligation to provide it to you on the laptops that you bought. When you bought your laptops, you had a choice of either the 3200 or the 3450 but there was not a choice of the 3200 AND the 3450 with crossfire enabled. The fact that there is 3200 silicon on your northbridge that possibly can be enabled does not mean that you bought the feature.
You may have bought your laptop with the 3450 with the expectation that crossfire was enabled, but HP never mentioned this when they advertised their laptops and HP never committed to provide this on their current models.
I mentioned this since from the tone of a number of the posts, a number of posters believe that HP somehoe failed to provide this and IMHO, this is not the case. Now, you as consumers have the final say. You are entiled to decide to never to buy another laptop from HP unless they "fix" it.
What would really be upsetting is if HP now comes out with an new Dv5z model that does have crossfire enabled but does not enable the current models. -
TorontoGuy: Having read much of the thread, it seems to me that the issue is that HP did advertise the feature and sowed the seeds of expectation in many of these eventual buyers.
-
If HP did, then I apologize.
I know that AMD really pushed this feature when they announced the Puma platform in June and the media really picked up on it as one of the main differentiators between the Puma and the Centrino 2 platforms. But it was always up to the individual OEMs whether to implement it on their laptops or not. -
I have a new DV5Z with the 3450 graphics card and it runs great. I just downgraded it to XP which has resulted in an easy 2x speed increase in almost all functions. This was necessary for some software I was running.
I have all functions operating except 1 and HP tech support acts like the question is from Mars even though it is documented on their own web site.
Here is the issue: The speaker light indicator (quick launch panel on the keyboard) does not function properly. When you start the machine, it is white (indicating speaker on) but as soon as the XP logo screen dissappears it changes to orange. It still works in turning the speaker on and off, but no longer changes color to indicate such.
If I load the latest driver and codec from IDT - the light stays white but sound no longer works - error message in device manager says "driver could not start". Tried manually starting the driver through adminstrative services in control panel - but that does not work. As soon as I go back to the old driver - sound and volume work great - but the indicator light is now orange all the time.
Has anyone sucessfully downgraded to XP and gotten this to work? Can you specify the driver? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as this is the last little hurdle to clear.
Please feel free to email me directly at: thx1326.at.swbell.dot.net.
Thanks in advance.
Warp -
Thanks is advance. -
Briefly, as envisioned by AMD, (I paraphrase)
Normally, you have either a IGP (a low end graphic processor) embedded on the chipset or a discrete GPU(a medium to high end graphic processor) on your laptop, but not both.
Crossfire was built to allow the you to have both chips, the IGP (3200) and the Discreate GPU (3450) worked together to give you a better visual experience, mainly for gaming. What it does is, the first frame is produced by the 3450, the second frame by the 3200, the third frame by the 3450, and so on. This would allow you to play higher level games (notice, I didn't say the highest level) at higher resolutions, than would be possible with the 3450 alone.
Alas, as has been document throughly on this thread, HP, for whatever reason, has not enabled crossfire on the DV5z.
If you didn't buy the DV5z with the expectation of using crossfire, then don't worry about it. You still have a decent GPU in the 3450, it just could have been better if it had been paired properly with the 3200 using crossfire. And if you don't game on your laptop you wouldn't notice the difference anyways. -
There's another side to this that you're missing, tied to crossfire but more important IMO. That is, you were supposed to be able to configure Powerplay and have the system switch automatically to the 3200 on battery power, and back to the 3450 when plugged in to AC. I don't care about crossfire, but powerplay would have made a big difference for battery life.
-
-
Yes, that's all correct.
But I believe if a company as HP announce a product line, advertising it under the official name, in that case PUMA, and without mantioning that there are missing features from the official specs and abilities of the platform. Whats more, thats the main main features, that makes buyers in fact buy the product.. HP knows that very well. When they say DV5z with the new AMD's PUMA platform, without adding the exception of super main things like missing crossfire, power express.
If you see my point. -
-
-
Think of it this way: If I sold cars on a car lot, and I sold, say, a manual Honda Civic with no express guarantees of any kind -- even a clearly-stated contract that said I made no guarantees of its abilities or performance -- but the top three gears didn't work... I would be violating this code. My customer has a reasonable expectation that due to the "hardware" of this car, it should have more than two or three gears (and be able to use the freeway). Further, if I had personally "locked out" these top three gears ("I was worried it might overheat"), I would be in a lot of trouble! Especially, again, if I hadn't told my on-site mechanics about it or how to fix it!
These considerations OVERRIDE *all* contracts, warranties, and expressions. I could write in my contract -- and make the buyer sign it -- that the car wouldn't even start. But it wouldn't be binding if I sold it under the impression that it would. It's not *just* bad business practice; it's refundable under law.
I, for one, will be getting my refund soon if this problem isn't worked out. -
niki b
I don't believe that HP was selling the dv5z with the PUMA moniker attached. I may wrong but I don't remember seeing it. We were all excited by the hype (including myself) when AMD announced the PUMA platform, but even AMD has stopped referring to Puma and are just calling it Next Generation computing now.
And I can not get my head around what qualifies a configuration as a Puma platform anymore. When it was announced, it was associated with a ZM processor, a 3200 IGP, with or without a discrete graphics card (3xxx series) and with ATI Hybrid Graphics (CrossFireX, PowerPlay, PowerXpress). We all could hardly wait to get our hands on one. Actually, not me, I had just bought a TL-58 and it was good enough for my needs, but I would certainly want one when I bought my next laptop.
But then, all the lower end configurations came out. What if it doesn't have a ZM-80 but a RM-70? Does a QL-60 still qualify? How about a SI-40 (give me a break - a Sempron)?
So it's not the processor that defines a Puma.
How about the graphics card (discrete or integrated). If it has a 3200 or higher in it, is it Puma, but what about a 3100 (which Toshiba is pushing).
Is it based on the chipset? If it has a 780 chipset, is it a Puma. But what happens if it doesn't support CrossFireX or PowerXpress like the dv5z as it currently stands today. Is it still a Puma?
Don't know and AMD is no help since they no long push the Puma branding. Try to find it on their website. Other than old news clippings, you just get the Next Generation platform.
Actually, its probably "all of the above" since AMD claimed 100 design wins for the Puma platform
Really, AMD needs to take a lesson from Intel and their Centrino and Centrino 2 branding.
Bottom line, all Puma was, was Marketing Hype to the industry and the techies back in June when the new laptops came out.
Mind you, my next laptop will probably still be a "Puma" since all I require is the 3200 IGP so CrossFireX and PowerXpress don't come into play for me
Now, with all the hype back in June, the engineers and decision makers at HP obviously knew about CrossfireX, etc. and deliberately chose not to included it. Why, I don't know but it wasn't an oversight for sure. Also, I have not been able to find other vendors which include this functionality in their "Puma" laptops. I don't mean announcements, but included in product descriptions of a particular model.
Enough of my ranting.
Xodarap
I would view the car example more along the lines of an engine company promoting how powerful its engine is to the industry press. But when a car company actually builds the engine into their car, they put a governor on it so it can't go over a certain speed. Now a car enthusiast may have read in the industry press how powerful this engine is, and expected it to go faster. But is the car manufacturer required to take the governor off and make it go faster when they did not mentioned it their sales brochure. Of course, after taking it out for a test drive, the car enthusiast can always return it (as you mentioned in your post of getting a refund) if it does not meet his particular expectations. -

This is certainly encouraging. If Toshiba is coming out with it, HP should respond by providing it, hopefully retroactively to their current models. If not, then people at least have an option, they can switch to Toshiba. -
good stuff, to bad it's a slightly different chipset.
-
The Asus M51Ta has PowerExpress, but no Crossfire because apparently the HD3650 they ship doesn't support crossfire. I thought about getting that instead, but the screen rez was too low. And now, looking at the Owners Lounge for that thing, it looks like Asus still has to get bugs worked out of their BIOS. (Same story with my M6Ne, I went thru 5-6 BIOS revisions before the fan worked properly...) So no real regrets there.
Yeah, let's see if Toshiba can shame HP into doing the right thing. -
HP's support site finally lists the F.12 BIOS...please upgrade if you dont already have it
support.hp.com -
Does this new bios include the hybrid crossfire and powerplay capabilities that we are all so desperately awaiting??
-
-
No this one just adds fan control, nothing special bout that cause i don't think it works anyways.
-
what kind of fan control? my current f.08 bios already had the option to keep the fan on, is this something different?
-
ohh, for some reason i thoguht I read that the earlier bios didn't have the fan allways on option. Despite having that option ticked on both the dv5z and the dv7z, neither one keeps the fan on all the time for me.
-
yeah, i had F.11 and just installed this F.12, and it's the same option wise. still has option for fan always on. it just fixes a few bugs, they are explained on the page where you download the new bios.
-
anyone can recommend a good means of protection? I was thinking something like a clear protective film to protect the outside cover?
Apparently a lot of places don't carry those products for our model. -
I'm looking for the part numbers for the HP 12 cell battery and HP extended capacity 6 cell battery for the dv5z, anyone have this info.?
thanks-
