Ok so i've come up with a new issue that i need people to help test. Anyone with a DENON or Yamahaa reciever with HDMI in, i need people to test the port with the HDMI out on the laptop. When you connect and you extened your desktop onto it, does the CCC report the 2nd screen as DVI or HDMI? It should report it as HDMI if it's working right, and DVI if it fails the HDCP handshake. I've been asked by the ATI engineers to compile a rough problem report to see just how widespread this issue is.

You may just need a newer revision HDMI cable. My older cables (1.2?) were detected as DVI but my newer ones work fine. I have no idea why it makes a difference, it just does. One of the HDMI 1.3 variants should work?

Tried all that. It works perfectly fine reading directly to the TV, and my old onkyo reciever, but this denon, the ati won't detect it as hdcp.

Do you have the current BIOS flashed in? Tried installing ATI Catalyst 8.10 drivers from ati.amd.com?

Other than those things I guess it's just the usual HDMI Digital Rights Mismanagement...

Has anybody here tried playing Fallout3 on their dv5z? I'm curious how well it runs.
Also, bumping the persisting question regarding the status of a fix for the hybrid crossfire situtation?

I played fallout 3 on my dv5z and it is okay i guess....it automatically tests and chooses suitable settings, it auto chose "medium" settings. but playing on that setting, i found it very choppy, not smooth at all. with that being said, i am more used to playing WoW, where the dv5z is great and the Frames per second is good and it is all smooth.

Fallout 3 will run fine on it, however with eye candy turned down. With that being said, a lot more eye candy could be turned up if we had that igp 3200 additionally working *cough cough*

ATI has released the official 8.11 Drivers. Time to update. With that said, I leave you folks on a somber note. HP is switching me to the intel/nvidia DV7T to fix some issues i've been having with the hdmi. I wish you folks the best of luck getting crossfire working.

This has nothing to do with us...becasue all this means is that MS will still rely on ATi and nVIDIA to release drivers supporting thier respective crossfire modes....as is the case now...so please dont read too much into this~

Those were my thoughts exactly. Just because Windows won't natively support hybrid graphics doesn't mean that video card manufacturers won't be able to continue providing driver support with those technologies incorporated.

Does anyone else ever have problems when they take their computer out of sleep mode? It seems like the computer remains blank, but the fans rev up as if it's going to. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with unplugging the computer from the power, and then trying to take it out of sleep. Any ideas?

GPU-Z is telling me that my GPU clock and memory are at 249Mhz and 247MHZ. Is this normal? Or do the frequencies get automatically reduced when the card is not busy?

P.S: It's plugged in and its in high performance mode in both catalyst and laptop power settings

I want to buy a notebook soon, I was looking at the Asus M51ta, but seems like it's BIOS is very very buggy.

The HP DV5z seems like a good option, but would like to have PowerXpress, and Hybrid CrossFire would be cool to have too. I can wait until january to make the buy, I hope HP finally gives an answer on CrossFire.

An important thing to me is Linux support, can anyone report on that? Any ACPI/APIC errors? Suspend working? What about wireless, card reader, webcam?

    Thank you.

The keyboard processor hangs on resume, you have to add i8042.reset to your kernel boot options. That forces it to be explicitly reset on resume.

The video processor also seems to hang on resume; I use s2ram --force --vbe_post to force it to reset on resume.

There was also a bug in kernels older than 2.6.27 that made it set the wrong wakeup vector in memory, so the BIOS wouldn't jump to the kernel's resume code. But that is fixed in the 2.6.27 final kernels.

I think 2.6.27 is still doing something wrong putting the keyboard to sleep; with Windows you can press any key to wake up the computer but with Linux you have to press the power button or the QuickPlay button, nothing else works. (Although, if you close the lid when putting it to sleep, opening the lid will wake it up too.)

Yes, the built in ACPI is buggy and will cause older kernels to fail to read the CPU temperature (the thermal_zone info is invalid). I've hacked my own ACPI DSDT to fix this, but apparently newer 2.6.27 kernels have been patched to report the thermal_zone values even though some of its fields are invalid.

Suspend is pretty dicy. I've found that after 2-3 cycles I have to unload and reload various device drivers to get them working again. I haven't tried to use the card reader yet. The webcam works fine most of the time, although once in a while (after suspends) it needs to be reset.

The wireless depends on what option you configure; I have an ABGN card made by Atheros; it's supported by the ath9k driver in 2.6.27. I leave my laptop running 24/7 and usually the driver dies after about 4 days uptime. Then I have to unload and reload it.

so i chatted with the live online technical help people about crossfire and these are what i got from a couple of em. btw, when they say hold on for one minute, multiply it by 5

    1)

11/23/2008 10:47:39AM Renel: "Is Crossfire enabled on the dv5z notebooks?"
11/23/2008 10:48:15AM Agent (Isaac): "May I ask what you plan on enabling Crossfire for?"
11/23/2008 10:48:27AM Renel: "For better graphics and to use the full potential of this notebook."
11/23/2008 10:49:56PM Agent (Isaac): "I would be glad to assist you with your question. May I place you on hold for one minute?"
    11/23/2008 10:50:12AM Renel: "Sure."
11/23/2008 10:54:48AM Agent (Isaac): "According to the manual that I have, for better crossfire, the 3450 should be upgraded to 3650."
11/23/2008 10:55:30AM Renel: "I spoke with someone a little earlier on the phone about crossfire, and that person said that crossfire is not enabled on this laptop."
11/23/2008 10:59:25AM Agent (Isaac): "I am sorry sir, please forget that I typed that statement above."

I had no response to this....I didn't know how to respond to it

    2)

11/23/2008 11:47:21M Renel: "I was wondering if both the onboard chipset and that can be used together through crossfire"
11/23/2008 11:48:07AM Agent (Margaret): "I am sorry but we don't have updates about that."

...no updates? is it a yes or a no? they dont even know and they have to be updated?

    3)

11/23/2008 12:11:10PM Agent (Jill): "AMD Hybrid crossfire is not enabled on this notebook's processor."

    4) *******keep this in mind. this is either true, or this Agent Wendy is just another dumbass agent.

11/23/2008 12:26:44PM Agent (Wendy): "I have checked my resources about your concern, and the Hybrid Crosfire can indeed be enabled in the HP Pavilion dv5z series since its processor supports the Hybrid Crosfire."
11/23/2008 12:27:15PM Agent (Wendy): "I suggest that you call our HP Technical Support Team for them to walk you through on how to do it, Renel."
11/23/2008 12:27:23PM Agent (Wendy): "You can reach them at 1-800-HPINVENT/1-800-474- 6836 any time of the day."

Usually the screws are hidden under the rubber bumpers, at least they were on the previous model line. My dv4z has an Infinity screen that has no visible screw coverings. I'm not sure what the regular screens look like.

I have not lost hope. I'll probably buy this laptop, Hybrid Crossfire is not my primary concern, but rather being able to switch between integrated and discrete graphic card to save power and avoid heat, even if I had to reboot to switch.

Also, Linux compatibility is a must, and it seems the DV5z works properly.
