Is there any chance a backlit keyboard option will show up in the near future? given the presence of the connector leads on the board, I think it could happen.

If anyone has done a minimal install image restore can you tell me how much space on the drive it uses after updating the OS and instal of SP1? I want to install SSD and need to know what size I need to accomodate the OS and another APP that I want on the SSD.

Fatwallet.com gives 3.6% cash back on HP computer purchases. (up to 5% on other HP stuff)

American Express Open Savings gives you 5% statement credit, just charge your purchase to an Open business card.

Bank of America's rebate system (I forget what it's called) gives you (I think) 5% back on HP direct purchases, and you don't have to be a business customer.

So im planning to buy the dv6t quad laptop and Im wondering if there is any chance that ill be able to use the free xbox 360 deal and the 30% off coupon at the same time?

Also, I have a few more questions on this laptop:

    1. Is the keyboard backlit? It doesnt give it as an option but maybe its just standard?
    2. If i get the best I7 processor they offer on this laptop and best gpu, will i be set to handle the latest adn greatest gaming graphics?
    3. Whats the realistic battery life?
    4. hows the build quality?
    5. How does the matte 1080p screen look in terms of quality?

    Thanks a bunch everyone!!!!

    1. No backlit Keyboard. That is currently an Envy only option.

    2. You will be able to play pretty much any game but not always at the highest settings.
    3. Depends on the battery 6 Cell, High Capacity 6 Cell, 9 Cell. For the standard six I've heard 3 Hours ish
    4. Can't personally say haven't received mine yet.
    5. Unknown to me. What I've read on the forum it's nicer. Thats also got a lot of opinion though as some people like gloss and others prefer matte. It's 1080P with an LED backlight so I would assume it looks relatively decent at least.

This is the post I read.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...xxx-series-owners-lounge-490.html#post7512259
I can't be certain if this will be the same model/part screen HP is using as I don't know how this guy got it.

All I know is I will be personally buying one at some point and replacing my 1600X900 with it. I would ship my order back but by the time I get a refund so I can afford to reorder they won't have the 30% off coupon (sucks) i'd get the 1080P if you're trying to decide though.

I completely agree for the small factor, My dv5t-1000 has a 1680X1050 15.4" screen which isn't even 1080P and while I love the quality I constantly find myself dragging things over to my HD tv screen (I have it docked at the desk and usually connected via HDMI with "extend screen") If not that then I find trying to read things off the web that my eyes hurt unless I pump the browser size option up considerably which wastes the extra real estate and kills the quality making the higher def screen rather pointless.. For games it's really nice though. Every day use not so much.

I don't know if there is an immediate shut off key combination or anything of the sort BUT you could always go into Power Settings and tell the screen to sleep after one minute :)

Mine hasn't arrived yet so I don't know if I've the "right" to say this but... Post where ever you want. I've read nearly every page of this thread and a large majority of them are discussions on status. Anyone who cares if you post it here has the right to skip over the post. We're a group of people trying to figure out our laptops and ordering and receiving is a part we all will are or have gone through. Share your experience :)

Edit: BTW Laptop's been delayed in Alaska for "Clearance" for over a day. Hope I don't become one of the one's where it gets stuck!

If you dug...this thread has most of the answers you need:

    1. No. With the latest model refresh, they threw out the back-lit keyboard. Much to the chagrin of everyone. This doesn't mean a future refresh won't have it...but swapping in a new backlit keyboard will involve soldering.

    2. If you get the slowest 2630 i7 and the 6570M video card you will be able to run the latest and greatest. I'd suggest you fork over $25 more for the 6770M. The 2GB card is mostly superfluous with the chance that it might be better.

    3. Battery life, they say, varies. With a 6-cell doing normal things (internet browsing, document creation, etc.) I think you'll get about 4-6 hours of battery life. With the 9-cell you should get about ~30% more time or 5-8hrs, although I actually haven't heard anyone who tested this in real-life (the 9-cell that is).

    4. Supposedly, build quality is excellent. However, there have been issues with the chipset previously. Some people have recurrent BSODs. Some people have had dead pixels or a dead backlight on parts of the screen. Overall, most people are VERY happy with the product.

    5. They just gave the 1080p screen as an option on 5/18...so no one has this screen yet.

So, in other words, I need to buy and HP caddy kit in order to get the second cable, even though I don't really need the other caddy, since I will have an extra already in the machine  Lovely!

Well. They're all over the place on this one. I've heard and read the following. You make sense of this:

-XBOX 360 promotion good from 5/26 to 9/2 or while supplies last.
-Promotion goes from 5/22 to 6/30 (? or end of June)
-Promotion is only vaild if you order via phone
-Promotion is not stackable with any other coupon as promotion itself is a coupon.

As the 30% off expires 5/22 and the dv7t 30% off has since died without refresh (that I know of)...my guess is the 30% off is done for the summer. However, I looked at the way back machine for last summer...and it seems like there might be some 20-30% off promotion again this summer...but no guarantees that its stackable or that it will be for the dv6t quad edition (or that it will also apply to upgrades).

If I had to recommend anything...its to purchase the laptop you want with the 30% off coupon now and then either talk them into giving you another $50-100 discount or return and re-order IF and when there is another 30% off coupon that is stackable with the XBOX promo.

Someone around here said they ordered two hdd's for their dv7tqe and then used the extra platter hdd as a small external drive since buying the drive came with the caddy and the cable...

That might be the most 'bang-for-the-buck' option. Now, I dont know if you need a small external drive...but if you do. This is a great choice for you!

No, I just get emails when cashback posts to my account, and sometimes a couple weeks after I click through to a merchant I'll get an email asking if I bought anything because the merchant never reported.

It does take 60-90 days for cashback to become available, but they're prompt with mailing checks or posting to paypal when you ask for your available cashback.

    2x750GB costs $170 more than 1x750GB.
If you get 30% off, that's $119, which is about what a 750GB or 1TB drive and the drive hardware are worth.
So it does work out OK, but only if you get 30-33% off on the computer.

Does the high capacity 6 cell battery protrude out the bottom or is it flush with the system?

Has anyone purchased a 2nd drive caddy off of eBay? I ordered from the hp-parts store well over a month ago. The 2nd pushed back ship date was yesterday and now I'm being told that it's pushed back again to the 6th. I need it before then. I opened mine up and there is indeed a 2nd caddy so it looks like all that is needed is a cable. Any idea if it's possible to get one somewhere else? Other model's cables work?

I'm semi-irritated about a couple of things on this laptop.

    1) I can't find the button to quickly turn off the camera
    2) No quick way to know if NumLock or CapsLock is on in the OS

My dv6tqe has an LED on the caps lock key but the num lock doesn't. It's fairly quick to check the state by tapping cap/num lock and it shows on the OSD(through the HP OnScreen Display utility).

Seems like they should have a utility that can enable/disable the cam through a hotkey though.

So there's no way to get just a cable? I have a SSD that I want to set up as a boot drive before I work from the road for 6 weeks on this machine. The part store's new ship date is 3 days before I leave. No way enough time to do a build even if it does ship. I just took out the 2nd drive caddy to see if there was a cable tucked under. No luck. The cable looks like a drive mount on one end and a mb mount on the other? HP the only maker of this?

You don't have to game in native resolution. Gaming in lower res on a 1080p screen will cause a bit of blur, but the huge benefits you get outside of gaming outweigh that IMO. Don't base your decision entirely on gaming.

I doubt it is HP proprietary or anything, but at the current time, they are the only known entity. You are talking about a new model and it will take time for others to jump on the band wagon. I am sure DigiKey carries all the parts for those willing DIYers.

The 1080p screen isn't to make movies look better. While it's a nice side effect, the real reason is so you can fit more on your screen because things are smaller. You will not regret the 1080p screen. It makes a huge difference and is worth every penny over 1366x768.

I didn't believe you and others until I saw a video of a dv6t and saw how LARGE everything was on the 15" screen. Sure I'm used to 1280x1024 (4:3) on a 19" but...two things. Its 19" and I'm using XP.

I'm sure you can dial down the font and icon size (at least you could in XP), but still.

I'm so glad I got the 1080p screen.

I can second that...I thought I would be able to "adjust" to the lower resolution but I was very wrong. I was going from a 17+ monster (weight wise) of a desktop replacement with 1600 X 900 and thought all would be okay with 1366 X 768 since it was a smaller screen and LED. I could not adjust so it went back today and my new order is in for a "new and improved" version! Cannot wait to get it. I am certain I will not regret the extra cost (about $200 due to coupon / refund differences). Who knows...perhaps I can still get additional credits. Will give it a day or so before trying.

My HP dv9700t (purchased in Feb 2008) was stolen earlier this week when someone broke into my house; the thief took other things as well, but left some blood and fingerprints, so that is good news.

I wasn't planning on replacing the dv9700t for another year or two (it was working fine after I replaced the fan), but anyway, I just ordered the following system using coupon code NB4151 for about 30% off, so $1190 + Tax.

    dv7t Quad Ed
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with Service Pack 1
    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
    • 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 1.5TB 5400RPM Dual Hard Drive (750GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security(TM) 2011 - 15 Month Subscription (activation required)
    • 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (over-sized) - Up to 9.5 hours of battery life +++
    • 17.3" diagonal Full HD HP Anti-glare LED Display (1920 x 1080)
    • FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
    • Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R) with Wireless Display Support
    • Standard Keyboard

I'll keep Windows on one drive, and put various Linux distributions on the other drive - that's how I had the HP dv9700t setup.

I'm pissed about the theft, but am hoping that the dv7tqe is as trouble-free as the dv9700t had been...

Hi guys. A few problems I am having that I hope someone can help me solve:

I don't use the touchpad so I leave it to off. However, every time i start up my dv6 (be it after shutting down or restarting), the touchpad turns back on. Just a minor problem that I have to turn it off every single time when I turn on my computer. On my previous dv2500t, once I turned off the touchpad it'd stay off, even after i turn on the laptop. Anyone knows a workaround to this? I don't wanna disable it in the device manager.

Secondly, I have to turn on the Beats Audio every time when i turn on the computer. To turn it on, I always have to click the small icon at the taskbar and click on "Listening Experience". I can feel a sudden chance in the sound when I do that, which is why I know it was turned off before. Does anyone know how to make it turn on be default when I start up my laptop?

    Thanks!

Turning it off manually isn't exactly an arduous task, even when repeated. Just tap the control on the top left, problem solved.

I just don't understand the infatuation with the 1080p screen, notwithstanding photo editing, matte, or current (unnessary dislikes) of the standard screen. Is it because of the 1080p TVs we buy today? :D

Yeah the real estate is nice but at what cost? Your back from leaning over and your eyes from being less than 12" from the laptop, don't tell me you can zoom because the negates the "real estate".

I mean really, your NORMAL viewing distance is 24" max (go ahead lean your head further away :) ) on a 15.6" screen. Your average viewing distance of a TV is 6-10' and lets say its on a 46" TV screen. You do the math.
What is the reason the Blue-Ray? Really? I just don't get it, maybe it's just me.

To be honest, I don't particularly like 1920x1080 on 15" laptops. I would greatly prefer it if they had kept 1680x1050 alternatives, but you can't have everything. I just find 1366x768 completely unacceptable for getting any work done. My current, 3+ year old laptop is 1280x800. I just opened a PowerPoint presentation and the top 180 pixels or so are taken up by the "ribbon" interface. The bottom 120 pixels or so are for the Windows Taskbar and "Notes" thingy. That leaves me with about 500 pixels of vertical space which is already extremely annoying if you are trying to design an A1-sized poster. There's no way I'm giving up 32 of those pixels.

I mean yes, I could fiddle with the taskbar and ribbon and try to free up some vertical space, but this is annoying in and of itself and you're still stuck with a pretty small total. It's much nicer to have the option of going to a large resolution, even if you ordinarily change the DPI settings for readability.

Can someone who has performed the Minimal Restore System Image tell me how many gigs it uses after you have updated the patches and SP1? Trying to get a handle on the size SSD to order.

I just RMA'd my dv7 to upgrade to the 1080 and it was no problem. Took no time at all after I got them on the line. Was within the 21 day return period. They had no questions at all. I guess a lot of people are jumping on the new display offer as it said they were experiencing very high call volume.

I use a 1080P screen at work on a desktop and at home on my lappy.

I just bump up the DPI a little and that solves the tiny text. Everything else is crystal clear and I can read text, icons, etc just fine.

Also, the color quality on the standard screen with the DV7t Quad IMO is horrible.

any owners of older dv6tse's, like mine from last October, considering trying to retrofit the new 1080p onto their lappy?

My DV6TQE screen was barely tolerable. I say "was" because I just returned it and placed a new order for a steel gray unit with the 1080p screen. When you would scroll text it would almost "disappear" and then come back when you stopped scrolling. The colors and resolution were just not cutting it.

I agree that changing the DPI settings in Windows 7 makes things a lot more usable. I have my 24" LCD for my Desktop set to 125% but I'll probably have to go a bit higher for the 15.6" screen :D

Another reason people are excited about the 1080p screen is not just because of the resolution. They are hoping it solves the problems with the current screen, which has a poor viewing angle and kinda washed out look to it. It's the one big weak spot of a really good laptop.

I tried to compare prices with other laptops and no way can you touch the price for what you get with the hp(w/30% disc). Closest I could come was at least $400 more. The Dell xps 15 would be good, but they need to add a better video card option!!

I believe the Sager NP5165 can come close, and the GT 555M is somewhere in between the 540M and the 6770M.

So anyone have any recommendations for a sleeve for the DV6TQE? I plan on putting it in a sleeve and into a regular backpack when carrying it around. Also any recommended wireless laptop mouses? Ones I've had in the past weren't the best.

Is it normal for an order to go "in production" just a day or two after you place an order? I ordered mine on May 17th, and it went into production either yesterday or today. Just wondering if it's on track, or if this is normal even for those who have received delays. Thanks!

Please may the first person to receive a 1080p display dv7t post his/her impressions here? Especially in comparison to the standard 900p screen. Thank you.

For the sleeve, look at Timbuk2 Zip Laptop Sleeve. Can buy in multiple sizes depending on laptop dimensions. Also, fits nicely in a Messenger Bag by them. There products are rugged and generally great.

For the mouse, look into the gaming wireless mice threads if you plan on games. Otherwise, go with the Logitech Performance MX if you want a full size mouse. It has a Unifying USB receiver so you can use a Logitech keyboard too on the same receiver. You can then turn your laptop into a sort of docking station.

I'm having a very strange problem with my number pad on my dv7t-6000. When I type 49494949494949 RAPIDLY on my number pad (can't be the top number keys, only the number pad and has to be at least fairly rapid), the computer registers the input as a 4, followed by me HOLDING the 9 key (i.e., a four shows up, there is a brief delay for the "repeat delay", then a string of 9s rapidly appears).

I had the keyboard completely replaced AND I already tried tweaking the repeat rate / delay.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or, failing that, can someone else with a DV7T-6000 try to replicate the problem so I know if it's a design flaw or if it's just me.

To try to replicate, just rapidly press 494949494949 on the numberpad as fast as you can.

    Thanks in advance!
