For the limited time I used my DV7 before I returned it I did get to use the fingerprint reader. After the initial setup and registering your fingers, you can begin logging into Windows as soon as the next restart. IIRC you give HP Simplepass your login info during the setup. It apparently works with IE and Firefox as well but I didn't try those.

Just got my DV6tqe about an hour ago. The 1080p screen is AUO B156HW01 v3, which, according to this spec sheet, is 60% color gamut. It's still a great screen though, the viewing angles are superb.

Thanks for the great initial review, dark_rider! My dv6t is on the truck for delivery, so am anxiously waiting. Hopefully the dv6t will be as nice as your dv7t!

I'm waiting to receive my dv6tqe (estimated delivery is June 10). Do you guys have like a checklist of things to look at when I receive to make sure that HP didn't mess up any of the hardware?

Is anyone willing to post their product number(not serial number) for 1080P/2G6770 dv6tqe?

It is under battery... That probably help others to order 1080P screen part.

    Same posting from different thread...

    ===================================================================
    dv6t Quad Ed just arrived.

    Here you go...

Seriously?? First I thought it was some kind of refurb. Worst boxing ever. Shame on you HP.

    HUGE adaptor.

    steel gray

    matte screen

I like the keypad. But not the arrow keys.

Backlit trackpad!! But not on keyboard?

Size compare with my 13inch Vaio Z.

1080p display is not bad. Better than most of mid-range laptops. However it is not the best I've seen.
Colors seem to be a little washed out compare to display of Vaio Z.

    Different angle

I'd say the display is above par. Fan is not too loud in idle mode. A lot of junkware as usual.
I have to replace the HDD with Intel 320 SSD 160GB and add 4GB RAM with 2GB that's installed.

Not too impressed but for this price- $950? Hell yeah. I like it.

Yeah that looks fantastic for the price. I own the Sony Z too and it's really the cream of the crop as far as non-workstation caliber (think Dreamcolor) top of the line screens.

So for those of you getting dv7t quads shipped in silver, I'd see if you could get a kickback from HP. This is directly off of the included specs (linked under the laptop itself on the customize page):
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/popups/includedFeatures.jsp

I'll be doing that if I get silver. I loved the look of the umber dv7tqe that I returned to get the higher res screen.

I'm on the phone now with a supervisor regarding the steel gray color that has suddenly dropped out of the sky and is appearing on the DV7t Quads.

Both of mine came today with the steel color rather than umber as they should have.

Apparently this is the first they have heard of this...*long sigh*

How long ago did you purchase? You may still be able to return and reorder.

But I'd argue it is, especially if you keep the original and swap it back in if you need warranty work done. They wont know unless you strip all your screws.

The 1080 screen is def worth it. It is very clear, the colors are very vibrant and the brightness/contrast is better than my Dell XPS M1710 True Life 1080P screen. The screen is very nice. It is worth every penny IMO vs the other screen.

The first DV7t Quad is Hardware Ids MONITOR\LGD0283
I'll grab the one for the 2nd DV7t after I eat dinner, I haven't even turned that one on yet. Just got off the phone with HP, and Ill post the results of that later too.

*update* - my 2nd Dv7t Quad has the same screen.

So its an LG LGD0283. Appears to be the same monitor in the ENVY 17 and the Dell XPS 17. Looking for more info

    EDIT:

    http://www.anandtech.com/print/4060

According to that, the screen is 72% color gamut

Does your Dell have a glossy screen. I am very bothered that the dv6 has matte. If it is better though than a dell with glossy, that may be some consolation.

Yes my Dell TrueLife has a glossy screen. Glossy screens on PCs and TVs have never bothered me and in fact I have typically always liked them more, because their colors were deeper and brightness/contrast better.

I will say that I am impressed by the matte finish. It does not take away in the richness of the colors, and they are even better than my Dell so it has managed to impress me.

I talked to a supervisor in HP Home Customer Care - Peter Garcia - and he is going to get back to me tomorrow. They have escalated this to their corporate office to the top execs because they need to figure out what is going on and what to do.

He said I would have to wait 48 hours to hear an answer, and when I wouldn't take no for an answer he said he would call me tomorrow. I told him that if the umber is still an option I want to get the ball rolling to get one now. If umber is no longer offered, than I am of course going to keep the steel grey, but I am sure demanding $$$.

I let him know that I am not the only one, and everyone so far has received the steel grey color. I am sure HP will expect people demanding compensation after this, as they should because you shouldnt advertise one thing and produce something entirley different. I used the analogy with him of ordering a black car and receiving a red one... both would result in unhappy customers.

Interesting, I'll confirm mine is the same. A very good panel for sure! I see Dell offers both glossy and anti-glare in the XPS17, whereas up until now, HP has only been using the glossy in the Envy 17. It's about time they offered a matte equivalent.

To see a comparison of the Dell screens, you can go here and select side-by-side comparison:
Dell - Help Me Choose: Display

FWIW, according to ISF a deltaE of less than 5 is imperceptible to the human eye. This display maintains less than 5 across all IREs according to the chart in the Anandtech article. We'll see how well mine stacks up during a full calibration.

FWIW, it's also worth noting the following comment from the review:
(Note: 68% of AdobeRGB is where sRGB falls, so in practice the 72% value is far better than the oversaturated result you get with high-gamut displays in non-color-managed applications.)

Ideally, you'd want perfect gamut and low color accuracy error reporting (deltaE), but given the choice I'll take the color accuracy over an artificially extended color gamut any day!

I get the same thing. I see it rarely in the upper part of the screen. It seems to go away when I switch to Intel graphics. I notice it playing games too. Hopefully a driver update in the future will fix it because it can get annoying.

If you keep on them and ask for a supervisor you may get them to exchange. Just keep explaining your frustration and disgust, and remind them that you don't want a refund, but exchange - you want to stay with HP. Remind them of any issues and frustrations you had to go through. If you dont get the answer you want, try again with somebody else @ HP.

    Really? Can't live with it?

You just paid $100-$150 for the screen. *facepalm*

I guess if you have the cash to spend dink around on the forums here to find someone who can look at the tech sheet of your screen so that you ensure the pinout, powerdraw, etc. are similar. You can always buy a glossy screen and hook up to it via HDMI or VGA or something at your desk...

The V.4 of that screen is 95% gamut...I'm not sure if they make a glossy version. It seems like they're moving toward glossy though.

Finally, this post/guy will have more answers for you.

Thank you! I really made it because I know when I get my laptop I will be too distracted* to remember what I need to do without everything written out beforehand. I am a laptop novice and just tried to compile good information from this forum that will hopefully benefit others as well.

*By the fact that I finally have a laptop - let alone a computer that can play games

I will be following your progress in this matter very closely. I believe for it to look more important to the execs we need more people calling. As I've posted before, I did a live-chat with an HP CSR about this but that didn't help with the problem. At least we can use this as a record that more people are becoming increasingly concerned about this issue. I will be referring to it when I call as well.

Did you receive a direct line Peter Garcia that we could call?

Even though most people who get this laptop in silver instead of umber won't go through the hassle of returning it, I feel that everyone affected deserves a monetary amends.

I don't think you should decide that sight-unseen, but all I can suggest is that you wait to purchase a replacement until you actually get to inspect the included screen for yourself. Who knows, it may change your mind.

To CREATE it? Or to USE it to restore the computer?

I found that the progress bar on the restore disk CREATION did NOT update properly, so seemed stuck at 85% or something like that. I created a restore thumb drive. I would watch the HD activity light and see when it stops. I think it made a sound and offered a visual alert (pop-up) when done, but I was in another room.

EDIT: To clarify, even when it was DONE, it sat at 85%. Not sure how long it would take to create a DVD(?) disc set. It SHOULD tell you when it is done, though. It could also be done, but doing the verify check, sorry I can't help you more. *shrug*

Edit: I am using disc to create it tho. I am on my fifth disc right now and its coming up on 2 hours

Edit 2: Just switched it to high performance setting, hopefully that helps.

IIRC, it took 20-30 minutes a disk for me. (4 disks on DVD+R)
It was hard to tell, as it would always finish when I wasn't watching it.

It only takes 10-12 minutes to burn a full DVD+R, so most of that time must be thinking/compiling time. I don't recall the DV7s being any faster than the G72 on the recovery disk burning though.

To create the restore DVDs, I used dual layers DVDs and it took an hour for each disc. It does the burn process and verification process to each disc.

If you use dual layer it takes 2 discs, regular blank dvds it takes 4.
