Maybe I'm misunderstanding, I think that you are saying that your USB 2.0 flash drive is getting the same speed out of the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports? If that is correct, you would have to have a USB 3.0 compatible device to get the higher speeds?
-
The 3.0 ports on the left are definitely faster than the 2.0 ports on the right. I've tested this with HDD's in a Thermaltake BlacX 5G dock and a Patriot 64GB SuperSonic USB 3.0 flash drive.
Maybe you are using devices that max out below the 480Mbps that USB 2.0 offers so you don't see a difference. -
Does anyone know when HP will update the Intel HD Graphics driver to 15.22 for WiDi, or has anyone tried installing the one on Intel's site? I'm curious if it's worth purchasing the Netgear PTV2000 or if I should just wait until the drivers are fully updated.
-
Dgobe, you are definitely on top of it sir. I picked up a Rush 3.0 flash drive by Centon, 30mb reads, 14 mb writes. I'm getting the same specs in the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. I also get identical performance with a USB 2.0 external HD. The Centon is definitely false advertising. What performance are you getting with the Patriot?
-
Is anyone else experiencing significant image tearing with the Radeon? The Catalyst option for enforcing V-sync doesn't do much, if anything. In-app V-sync settings have had mixed results. I'm on driver version 8.830.6.2000.
-
Are you positive about that? I just wanna make sure.
Also, does it mean than if I want a blu-ray writer then I've to include it in my order otherwise I will void my warranty if I buy a blu-ray writer and install it in the laptop, right? -
USB 2.0 will max out around 48MB/s after you account for 8b/10b encoding. You probably already know Centon specs your drive at 80MB/s read, 60MB/s write so it's not even running at half the spec.
AS-SSD shows sequential speeds of 121MB/s read, 76MB/s write for the Patriot 64GB Supersonic drive when tested in the dv6tqe USB 3.0 ports.
Alex Intelligent Software - Downloads: AS SSD Benchmark
In the USB 2.0 ports it runs at 31MB/s read, 22MB/s write. That's kind of surprising. You would think it would run closer to the max but I always use it in a USB 3.0 port if available. -

Looks like HP will start offering AMD's new processor offerings starting in July in the dv6/dv7 as well as other laptops. Wonder if they will still offer the i7 as an option? Also how do these AMD processors compare to the i7? Never been much of an AMD processor fan.
HP upgrades 11 Pavilion and ProBook laptops to AMD Llano APUs -- Engadget -
Hi everyone,
I am thinking about ordering the Dv6t today, I am just not really sure. I read a lot in this thread but mostly its just stuff about configuation etc.
Are you satisfied with the laptop or would you have bought a different one considering price/configuration??
Also I "heard" HP is one of the worst manufactures and the build is supposed to be really bad - anyone knows something about it
I also am having a hard time to decide weather to take the 750 5400rmp or the 640 7200rmp. I dont care about the size at all, both fine cause I have an external anyway...I read that the 7200 takes more battery and the laptop is getting hotter, what do you think is the better choice? Anyone knows how much the higher speed affects the heat/battery?!
Thanks a lot in advance! Appreciate the help
-
If you don't care about the size, then I suggest you go with the 7200rpm. It makes a marginal difference in terms of heat/battery life. It seems generally people are pretty happy about the dv6t. From what I gather the big issue with the newest dv6t's are the switchable graphics. A lot of people are having trouble getting the discrete grahics card to kick in when they want to, but most people are confident it will be fixed with a driver update in the near future. Make sure you use the 33% off coupon, NBQL6835 when you buy.

I have heard a lot of talk on this board about build quality being just soso. Well I have now had 3 of these and all three were of excellent build quality. I had other reasons for returning them but not build quality. And as far as that goes you can return the unit no questions asked for 21 days so no worries anyway. I think any brand can have these build quality issues that have been presented on this thread. After all if you think about it all the brands are probably being built by the same manufacturer inn China!

I made a quick unboxing & benchmark video for the dv6tqe-6100. Drivers used are original.
Unboxing & benchmark - YouTube -
That's correct. You have to have a USB 3.0 devices to maximize the USB 3.0 port on the laptop. For what it's worth, 3.0 devices are significantly faster. I was getting really good transfer rates - like 3 times faster than USB 2.0 if I recall correctly.

has anyone had the problem of when you hold down any key the touch pad dose not work?????this is annoying when playing games without an external mouse?!!
-
Thanks mjl2116 and fishcrazy!
I will order mine soon today then!
Yes I know about the return/exchange, only problem. Mine will probably just arrive end on June, and I am going on a one-month travel from July, 3rd - August 4th and then fly straight back to Germany. We have HP too but I think won't work with the return etc in Germany. So I hope to have some luck
I might still be able to send it back in the travelmonth though if I am not satisfied at all...
-
Seeing your name "Wiebke", I was wondering if you're German and you are, indeed.
I'm going over to Germany, too, but at the end of this month. I asked HP about for warranty and they said that the warranty will work in Germany, too. I have to ask them about the return, though.
EDIT: HP said that if you wanted to return the laptop you would have to send it back to the U.S. and the account from which the laptop was paid will be refunded. -
How long did it take for you guys from ordering until actually receiving your laptop?
-
Hi guys,
i ordered a dv7t quad series. Will get built by june 21. I am interested to know the opinion of current owners as to the heat generated and the noise of this machine. (i ordered it with the 2630 quad core cpu and the 6490 Radeon GPU). Does the coolsense work or it's just a gimmick?
I have a HP HDX16t with a core2duo 2.54 ghz processor and it runs hot on the lap and under the palm rests even with normal internet browsing.
I'd appreciate a response from current owners, especially that i can still cancel and order the Dell xps17. Only thing keeping me from ordering the dell is the reported heat issues. So if the dv7 isn't that much cooler, i'd take the backlit keyboard of the dell over the non-backlit of the hp.
Thanks. -
I dont game so I cant comment on the heat under gaming conditions but I do run 3 external monitors and have no problems with heat during normal multitasking operations. Almost everyone upgrades to the 6770 Radion just so you know. And the HD Display upgrade is a must in my opinion. The left palm rest is where you feel some warmth but it is not severe at all.
-
Thanks for the quick reply,
what does the 6770 radeon have over the 6490? and why does everyone upgrade to the 6770?
To me the less heat and power concumption, the better.
I don't game at all save for a browser based pool flash game.
Again thank you. -
The added GPU horsepower and video memory can be used for more than just games. Photoshop uses it for instance, and when more OpenCL programs come along (programs that actually run within the GPU for calculations, not the CPU) a more powerful graphics card will help.
The lower power/heat argument makes sense, but youll likely be using the Intel IGP for those situations anyway. -
gotcha.
well what you said makes sense, but i dont think i'm gonna cancel and reorder, too much hassle. especially that i dont' do photoshop or anything gpu intensive really. Only reason i'm buying a "high end" pc is for the screen (1920x1080) and blu ray performance.
I bought a cheap acer for $350 a few weeks back it has a 1366x768 screen (15.4 inches) and it simply SUCKS, especially when you're coming from a 1920x1080.
Now i'm at a loss whether to stay with hp or get the dell xps 17. hmmm decisions decisions -
one more question, does the Radeon(TM) HD 6490M have switchable graphics too?
-
As far as temperatures go, I was just running Firefox with 10 tabs open, playing 1080p video on Youtube, while running 16-bit CD quality audio in MediaMonkey, with a couple light applications going as well. My max CPU core temps were 62-66, while my 6770m hit 58 at one point. My normal temperatures for typical multitasking are in the low 50s.
-
thank you that was very helpful. My HP HDX16 def. runs higher.
how does it feel to you? Do you use it on your lap? how about the palm rests?
Anyone can shed a light on the coolsense tech? does it work or it's just a gimmick? -
Coolsense works in my opinion. The thing I find great about this laptop over previous ones and over other makes is there is no intake on the bottom of the laptop. The intake is on the back and the exhaust is on the left side. There are small vents on the bottom but its just for passive cooling of things like the RAM and hard drive.
If you are doing intensive things like gaming and such the upper left and left sides of the machine will get warmer, but not uncomfortably so. I'm quite sure that the reason the machine is made partially out of aluminum is to use the case itself as a sort of heatsink. IMO it all works well in concert together.
I still use a fan pad when I'm gaming and such, and I have noticed a temp difference, but its likely because the vents on the bottom still cause some additional airflow over the major components, even if the Heatsink/fan inside the laptop doesnt directly pull from the bottom. -
Hey thanks Beradon,
i guess i'll stick with the HP then.
by the way, great work on trying to install a backlit keyboard, i've read the whole thread yesterday. Too bad HP decided to take away that feature. I love the backlit on my hdx16.
I hope they come out with a backlit edition at one point. -
I was looking for more information from the dv7tqe 4000 that had the backlit keyboard (the one with the erroneous B2 stepping cougar point) but I cant seem to find any information about that specific keyboard other than people saying they have it.
I'd be willing to give that one a shot if I could find one at all.
I've also toyed with the idea of prying all the keys off the backlit keyboard I bought and putting them on my keyboard, then pealing the backlighting off of the backlit keyboard and installing it. The biggest issue with this though is that there is more space open on the underside of the backlit keyboard, it has plastic inserts to allow more light through than the standard keyboard has. So it might partially work but it wont be as bright. I'm also hesitant to destroy my good keyboard, so I'd have to find a cheap current dv7tqe keyboard to try it with so I know the wiremap and keymapping works. The backlight feature is simply a white plastic piece with LEDs in it glued on the bottom of the ENVY17 keyboard. -
the dv7-4000 does not have a blacklit option. the dv6-3/4000 did, but it does not have a numpad, and won't fit into the 6xxx versions.
-
Ah, my mistake, I thought I had read that someone said they had a dv7t-4000 with a backlit keyboard.
EDIT:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-dv7-4060us-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B003KN3IXU
That says it has a backlit keyboard.
EDIT2:
Apparently the reviewers say it doesnt. Bad Amazon... -
In the WEI, I'm getting 6.6 (like everyone else with a dv6/7-6100) for the Gaming Graphics, but for regular Graphics, I'm getting a 5.2 plugged in, and the "winsat.exe" is set to high performance. Is this anything to worry about? What are everyone's WEI scores?
-
WOW you are so motivated to get a backlit on your dvt7!!
again, shame on hp for not offering the option.
I am an advanced user/tinkerer, but def. not a modder like you. Let me know if you find a way. i am willing to help. -
My return date is coming up soon and I know I'm probably just being paranoid, but does anyone elses dv6 go to a black screen for about half a second when launching programs that need "permission"? This happens to me with HWMonitor and the like. I just wanted to make sure this was normal.
-
That's Windows 7 in general. It happens on every Win7 machine I've ever used. Part of the reason I disable it immediately (the rest being that its just annoying). You're just being paranoid, dont worry about it.
-
It never happens to me on my desktop when Vista asks for permission for a program. I just downloaded FSX and when I clicked on the .exe in my Download folder, the same "flash" happens. I know I'm probably just being paranoid, I'm just trying to cover my bases and make sure this is a normal occurrence.

Could you link me to where you discussed your attempt at installing a backlit keyboard? -
i've had several freezes... my laptop froze once after playing a game for a while, and another time it froze while playing the game.. anyone have similar problems?
I tried to search this thread for similar problems, but i couldnt get the search thing to work...
-
It's about 2/3rds of the way through the modding thread, but I have comments all throughout, so you'll just have to look through it. Sorry, but no single link will show it all.

Lol thats fine. I totally understand. Could you link me to the modding thread though? I cant find it in a google search -
Anyone else just get prompted to do a Bios Update via support assistant?
-
If you just got your laptop or are not on F14 you might get a popup to do an update.
-
I'm still on the stock bios, any reason to upgrade besides WiDI or something?
-
I got mine on May 3rd I think.
-
To be honest I would never use any laptop on my lap, as I'm paranoid that it will overheat. Even though, as mentioned, these models do not have intake on the bottom.
I don't have any problem with the palm rests. When pushing the computer to the absolute max, temps can reach into the 80s. At that point, the left palm rest feels slightly warm, but is not annoying. The right side remains quite cool. The only spot that really gets hot is the upper-left side near the Escape key.
CoolSense does work, and cuts max temperatures down about 10C, into the 70s. That said, I find it really annoying as the fans sound like a jet engine that drowns out all other noise, including my window AC unit about 5 feet from my desk.
This is a change from Vista to Win7. Win7 now dims the screen when UAC pops up. What this actually does is it basically locks your computer until you respond to the prompt. This is designed to stop malware from either stopping UAC entirely, or choosing the Allow option automatically. -
The first thing I do after doing a clean OS install is disable UAC..lol Annoying as hell.
-
I've done some searching but to no avail. Is there a service/maintenance manual out there for the dv7t? If it's been posted somewhere sorry.

Unfortunately HP saw fit to take it down, not quite sure why. There is a link to it that someone posted in the modding thread hosted elsewhere
