Open your drive. There should be a fixed lightscribe sensor on the side of the spindle.

guysss....does fedex make deliveries on Mondays? An HP rep told me that fedex doesn't work on mondays and weekends... but my package had been moving throughout the day today(saturday) and traveled from Memphis to my city, thats about 2 movements through the day.... I have paid for the 2-day shipping....but I reckon I'll have to wait almost for the same time as the normal shipping.. Right now, its 'at destination sort facility'... Can I go collect it myself from somewhere Fedex can get it for me?

Guys, I for some reason overlooked picking my hard drive, and picked the free upgrade to 750gb 5400rpm. I doub't I'll even use up half of that. So I was wondering if it would be worth it to send it back just to get a 500gb 7200rpm hard drive instead? I don't know if it will make much of a difference though.

    haha, not even worth considering.
250gb is better than the extra rpm anyways.

nah apsolutely not worth sending it back for that. the difference is negligible and you never know when you will need that extra 250gb

plus you could always upgrade it to an SSD or hybrid-SSD in the future

Cool. Do you guys know how long the dv6t quad can run on a 6 cell battery just web surfing/music. Don't know why I didn't buy the 9 cell, but bought a dumb laptop bag which I'll probably return lol.

DV6T-60XX owners question: Do you guys remember when you were on F.06 or at any other time being locked out of graphics switching if you had certain applications running? Mostly going from 6770->IGP.

I only noticed the "certain applications are running that prevent you from switching graphics" pop-up after I upgraded to f.14. I've been downgrading everything to f.06 and I still get that block when certain apps are running.

I would rather have 7200RPM actually, the HDD speed is a big bottleneck on computers. If you really want more space, you can pay like $20 usd more (I actually paid only like $14usd more for the upgrade since I had a 33% off coupon) and get the 750GB 7200RPM.
The real problem is if you just want to send your computer back to change the harddrive, is will you get the same coupon or better? it may cost you alot more if you cant get the same coupon.

    Hi,
Since the new envy refresh is incredibly disappointing looks like I am going to be picking one of these up. Can you guys recommend the best build...price isn't too much of an issues but I don't want to spend money on upgrades that are impractical like the extra gig of video card storage.
    Thanks

    -Get the 1080p screen. ($+150)
    - Leave it at 6GB ram, you can add more for cheaper than it would cost you to have pre-installed.
    - Get the 9 cell battery, since the computer really eats up power when not plugged in.
    - Don't get the 2GB for the 6770. You already know this.

And if you get the 1080p screen, might as well get blu-ray as well, and blow your mind away.

Did anyone make a step-by-step tutorial fo disassembly yet?

Since you can't acces the fan via the service cover...but I suppose there will be considerable amounts of dust after ~6 months.

Also I plan to replace the cooling pad with real thermal grease.

    Important upgrades:
    - 1920x1080 display - do not skip this, the 1366x768 display is bad
    - 1GB 6770M graphics - not 2GB, but make sure you upgrade from the 6490M.

Whats wrong with the 2gb one? - aside from the fact that it's probably useless due to the somewhat limited chip...only ddr3?

you can go ahead and buy it if you want lol. from what i've read, the 6770m chip itself can't utilize the full 1gb vram, so 2gb is just overkill. basically, it's just a marketing ploy for people who automatically think more vram = better performance (sorry, i think i basically copied that verbatim from someone. credit to whoever that was :D)

because the 1gb 6770m is more than enough to run any latest graphics-oriented programs or games... the extra 1gb will be useless because no programs or games have been introduced yet that can even require more than 3/4 of a gig at the most... 512mb would probably be enough to run most of the latest stuff...

Hello, I just ordered a dv6tqe on 6/23/11 and just saw that HP just released the new AMD quad core laptops. What do you guys thing about those new ones and if they will perform better than the i7.
From what I seen, as I saw this on best buy add. The graphics card is the 6750. So is there a lot of difference between that one and the 6770.

So would it be as powerful as the 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
that I got or would the AMD Quad-Core A8-3510MX Accelerated Processor (2.5GHz/1.8GHz, 4MB L2 Cache)
be a somewhat close to the i7. Or is it not wroth it.

    Here's the link: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv6zqe_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6zqe_series

umm, the 6750m (when crossfired) in the dv6z is far more powerful than the 6770m in the dv6t.

look at the benchmarks in the llano thread.

Not sure where you get that the Envy refresh is disappointing! There were some throttling issues where when the GPU and CPU were maxed out...that the CPU would default to 800 MHZ...HP fixed a month ago. Some of us approached different contacts that we had at HP and they got the issue resolved. Only spotty issue now is the Intel wireless 6200 N card. It has some issues with certain chipsets in Routers...but not all. An older driver even fixes that issue. The Envy board, right now, is pretty much a ghost town...most people, me included, are pretty happy with this machine. The screen is gorgeous, performance matches the Asus G73SW pound for pound...not much to complain about any more. Pretty much discussions are about tweaking. The Envy 17t-2xxx is one of the finest machines out there.

I just purchased a second Pavillion dv7t for my son. His original Pavillion (over three years old) is having issues...not because of the machine...but mainly because a Coke got spilled into the keyboard. It still runs, but the wireless function is gone, no bluetooth anymore, and some other issues. Gonna turn that one into a music workstation for him (majoring in college in Audio Engineering and Music business). The new one looks pretty incredible as well. I have to say that for the money...I cannot tell you that anyone offers better value and performance for what you pay than HP. I say that and I am NOT an HP employee.

But, but, but, don't the Envy's currently rolling off the assembly line have issues with switchable graphics, just like with the Pavilions?

I can say this...the 6750 with that screen resolution should scream! That is a pretty nice machine, indeed. My son's original Pavillion was an AMD Turion...great machine. I think both machines are great configurations. One thing to keep in mind with AMD processors...you won't have switchable graphics. Mind you my son's machine is over three years old and has the 9 cell battery. He had the Nvidia 8600 chip in his and still got over 4.5 hours on battery with his 15.6" screen. Got him a new Pavillion with the 2630, 17", 6770 and the like as well.

No the switchable graphics can be done manually. When you right click on the desktop, you can switch graphics from AMD to Intel at will. OR...just leave the AMD enabled. When on battery, it goes to Intel graphics and when you plug it back in, it goes back to AMD. I even tested...ran on battery for about an hour. Plugged the machine in while still powered by battery...Power supply took over and a pop up came up and asked if I wanted AMD graphics again...I said yes and it changed back to AMD.

I have read the issues with the Pavillion and switchable graphics. I do believe that it is in the drivers. I recommended that someone try modding the Envy drivers to install on the 6770 (not hard...just some mods to the install .ini file) and I think you could get manual switching back. Never heard anything.

Switching graphics cards can also be handled by CCC as well. There are no such issues like the Pavillion in the Envy line...no one has complained.

I can even disable automatic switching and leave just the AMD card to do everything. That would entail having AMD card on battery, too. With switching, I get 3.5 hours on six cell battery with brightness on 6. On power, I keep brightness on 7. Nine cell giving over 5 hours of battery time for some. Mind you...the Envy 17 3D (model I have) only comes with 1900 x 1080 screen. Some have kept just the ATI card and reported about 2 hours 40 min battery time. Here is the manual switching screen. Whether you have an Envy 17t-2000 or 2100 series...you have power over the graphics switching...

My son's Pavillion hasn't shipped yet, so I cannot mod the Envy drivers to install on it. Ship date was 6/28, but still nothing from HP. If anyone is game and knows how to mod the Envy drivers (.ini file written for HD6850)...all you need do is change the 6850 to 6770 save the .ini file and install See if the manual switchable graphics returns. I posted the file to look for and how to change it on the switchable graphics thread. Check it out and if someone is willing to try...report back...does the driver change the situation. If YES...we know it's drivers. I can't see how it wouldn't be.

But what about the amd processor? a8-3530 is ranked on #96...lower than the 1st gen core i3.... isn't that so slow?

now I get it... the dv6z doesn't have a crossfire version of the 6750m, but two gpus, one integrated 6620g and the other dedicated 6750m... the 6620g is faster than the intel hd 3000, but the 6750 is slower than the 6770m
So the dv6z doesn't have crossfire as you thought, but just like dv6tqe it's got a combination of 2 possibly switchable graphics...
Also, the fastest processor offered in the dv6z is nowhere near to the 1gen core i3 as per notebookcheck's benchmarks.... So I think the dv6tqe is a much better deal...

When I got it, it was like $30 more after the discount. I figured it couldn't hurt. Nothing may use it now, but whenever there's memory available it allows a developer to load things into it. Perhaps programs won't do so in the future, or perhaps they will. In either case, since I'll be keeping this machine for a while I figure it's worth the $30.

I agree that currently you probably won't see a difference. But, some day there might be a benefit.

One thing about the Blue-Ray burner is that it doesn't have lightscribe. I debated that one quite a bit when I got my computer and I decided to get just the blue-ray player since it does have lightscribe. The burner says it's a 2x blue-ray burner but really it's 6x. Still, most external units will be 12x and I'm sure they'll get faster over time. I'm not going to burn blue-rays any time soon and if I do, I think I'd want the fastest drive I could get. This way, I get a drive that can do almost everything and then I can buy an external unit that's faster when or if I ever want to start burning them.

    It's just something to consider.

Hey guys, I'm about to buy the 6017tx OR the 6121tx (preferably the former), and I have some questions.

    1) How hot does the laptop get while gaming? Consider ambient temperature to be around 27oC.
    2) Is the 720p screen a pain to do programming on for long hours? (I'm going to college for Comp science engg)
    3) Is a laptop cooler essential?
    4) You think it can run the next 4 FIFAs well? I.e. at high settings, or if required, high with lower resolution.

HP Customisation is not available here, so these models are availabe with the standard 720p screen, i7 2GHz, 6770M 1GB/2GB

That current programs don't use 2 gb isn't the reason why it's completely and utterly useless..on this card.

The processing power and memory bandwidth on a 6770m isn't high enough to utilize 2gb period. The ABSOLUTE top end desktop cards are barely pushing over 1gb and that's only at the most top end resolutions.

We're talking desktop caliber cards here. The 6770m is akin to a DESKTOP 8800 GT...a card released about 3-4 years ago. for tat...other than the newer features, in terms of raw power that's about where the 6770m stands.

Future programs or not, the extra memory is worthless. At least for this particular card. You'd be choked by the card itself LONG before the amount of memory becomes an issue.

With that said...$30 bucks is a good price to pay for it. Useless or not, having 2gb aids greatly on resale value when you put it on the list of bulletpoints.

yes, definitely a very good deal... You can do a couple recommended changes to these configurations. One, you could just stay with the 1gb 6770m gpu and two, you could get a 9cell battery instead (for more battery life and better ventilation under the laptop) You can also use the current $375 discount coupon or you might risk to wait for a new and possibly better coupon, like 30%off, which may come out soon as a part of the independence day sale...(possibly on monday)
But, I think you are talking about the quick-ship model... Then it's alright... But you can still make those changes and order the customized laptop, just that it will take a couple weeks for delivery...

guys... I ordered the dv7tqe with free 6gb... now HP has free 8gb... So I thought I could get a credit for it :D , like a couple people have got on the forums for the same thing last month during the memorial day sale... I called up HP resolutions dep. asking for a credit...but the rep clearly refused for it...
What should I do now? Is it really fair for me to ask them for that credit?

No, I would say you have no entitlement to it.

You could cancel the order and then order an another, but RAM is so cheap. At Newegg DDR3 SODIMMs are very cheap. A single 4GB DDR3 1333 for $30 or a pair 2x 4GB (8GB) for $64.

    Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Memory, Laptop Memory, 4GB, 8GB (2 x 4GB), DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666), DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600), DDR3 1333 (PC3 10660), DDR3 ...
