Highly recommend looking for a laptop with 1080p if programming is a primary task.

After owning both the 720 and 1080 DV6's, I wouldn't consider the 720 for ANY primary task. The HD screen is a wonder to behold.

I'm thinking of buying one of the new dv6z Llano machines. But there isn't any rush unless I can get it before leaving for vacation. How accurate have the delivery estimates been for you guys?

HP runs hot and cold! Last week, people were getting machines early. This week it looks differently. I am told there will be delayed shipping on some models...nothing specific. I have a Pavillion supposed to ship 6/28...I consider myself lucky if it ships this week! My Envy 17 3D was about 8 days late

well....the delivery dates actually depend on your luck.. If you get really lucky you may even get it before your estimated build date/ship date... And if you are not so lucky, you may get it a month after you ordered... :wideeyed:

Like I got my first order a day before the estimated build date, and my second order shipped a day after the estimated build date and I got it today... :D
For some people, it shipped very late and for some others, it got stuck into customs for a long time, like a week or so...
One guy actually got it a month after he ordered, because his package apparently got lost somewhere in transit...!! :elvis:

But normally, it ships 1-2 days before the estimated build date and is delivered a day before Fedex estimates the delivery...

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and use my old laptop for one more vacation. I'm sure the brand new platform would make their ship dates even harder to count on.

    It's probably for the best.

    Thanks.

Guys... Till how many days after using the computer is it recommended to make the recovery media? I mean are we advised to do the recovery process as soon as we get the machine, like at the first boot? Or we could use it for a few days and then do the recovery stuff as we get time... What's most recommended?
    Thanks

They listed ship dates for the Z at July 8...not too bad! Last time HP fell behind, it was because of the actual "cases" that the laptops were built into. I can't imagine that they build as many AMD machines as they do Intel. What is your vacation dates?

If you are talking about the Recovery Disks...the partition doesn't change. You can almost do it at anytime. It will give you the same OS and settings as the day you first turned the machine on. I, personally, do that second. I do a backup using Acronis True Image Home 2011 first...then I created my backup recovery disks. The partition stays intact and is not effected by anything that you install on the machine afterward. The ONLY thing that could cause issues would be a boot sector virus, wiping out your Recovery partition.

If you mean to make a backup using Windows Backup to make a copy of your windows partition data to DVDs or something, then ASAP, just so you aren't backing up a bunch of junk (downloaded game demos, movie trailers, your email downloaded to the drive, etc).

Making the recovery media should be done soon, simply to ensure that if anything does go wrong you'll be ready. Otherwise it doesn't really matter. The restore media is simply the data needed to return the system to factory default (or the minimal install default). This is just the partition data and drivers (IIRC, anyone feel free to chime in and let me know if I'm incorrect). How much you use the machine or what programs you add to it won't matter i this case.

Safest bet...wait until you return. There is no way to predict when HP is on time with shipping or late. You could order and it might ship 7/1...OR...it might ship 7/11 and it arrives when no one is home. Unfortunately, there isn't even a "Quick Ship" model yet

Heh, I just realized that Cthulhu Saves the World/Breath of Death VII is hitting Steam just as it's time for me to head out. A new laptop is therefore not going to be needed.

    Crisis averted.

With apologies to HP technical support and Beats Audio, I am happy to report that I have been able to play Blu-Ray and DVDs in 3D and 5.1 audio and send the signal through the HP Wireless TV Connection device to my home theater room via my Marantz SR 8002 Receiver. I used the Cyberlink PowerDVD 11 Ultra Software after using Fidelizer to optimize my computer for A/V Playback. The Cyberlink software does a very commendable job of 2D to 3D conversion. I have not tried an actual 3D Blu-Ray as yet You do not need a “3D” computer, such as the HP Envy, to send 3D through the HDMI out of a HD3D enabled graphics card such as the Radeon HD 6770M. I am using the VIP 3D Theater from Curt Pulme to decode the 3D signal and send it to my 2D Sony KDS 60a2000TV. The quality of the audio and video is sensational. My laptop is the new HP DV7T 1080P. Highly recommended: Diana Krall in Paris DVD converted to 3D.

    Hi people,

I am considering this laptop. How's the temperature/heat of the DV6 model? I've read some reviews on DV7 and according to them, it gets alarmingly high.

I see your point. I paid $35. When I bought it, it was a $50 upgrade and I got 30% off. Now I see they have raised the price to $75. Definitely a rip-off. Probably was a rip-off at $35 but it seemed like a small amount for something I couldn't replace or upgrade in the future. There's no way I'd pay $75 for it.

In any case, I wish they would spend there time on integrating a backlit keyboard instead of this. I regret that my laptop doesn't have a backlit keyboard, but so few do. I wanted a backlit keyboard and an anti-glare screen and I settled for the latter since it was more important to me. The Asus had both but then it was twice as much for the same configuration.

I guess I can always turn on a light if I need to :) And yes, avoid the 2GB for the amount they're trying to get for it. I agree.

Anyone have any experience with the DV6t Select Edition? I was thinking the compromise between battery life and heat would be worth the performance loss compared to the Quad Edition.
    Any ideas?

But the thing is which DV6 that you currently own? is it the latest generation that has the sandy bridge proc and dark-umber colour on its body? Someone ran Witcher 1 on the latest generation of DV6 and got above 80 degree Celsius on GPU temp. The lower left area of the laptop even got very hot to the touch (not warm). I mean...isn't that bad?

hey everyone, I have a dv7tqe. I'm finding that sometimes when i am typing, the beats audio gets disabled. I've guestimated that it's a hotkey sequence that i am hitting, but i can't figure out which sequence it is since i am typing to fast to realize the combo.

The combo disables or unchecks the "beats audio" setting under "listening experience" in the sound software.

Anyone know how to disable the hotkeys?

Also, i checked out my cpu with cpu z and it listed my 2i7-2720qm having only 2 cores and 4 threads. Shouldn't i have 4 core and 8 threads? Are the other cores disabled some how?

I am not eligible enough to talk about the cores.. But you can go into device manager and if it says 'core i7 2720qm' four times, then everything is alright... If not, you need help...
The hotkey for beats is ctrl+B

there are some photo grade dvds also...So which ones would be the best in reliability and will last longer?

Just get decent quality DVD's to burn. Verbatim, JVC (Taiyo Yuden) are excellent quality DVD+R. They will give you decent archival life. Especially the TY's. I use only those two brands.

    You can get TY's here:

I am debating if I should get the Blue-ray player or upgrade to Blue-ray burner. I do have some HD videos of my kids' recitals that I want to burn them to Blue-ray discs so that my parents can watch them on their TV. Is the Blue-ray burner that HP offers any good? Anybody has first hand experience?

HP makes decent burners. YES...If I had HD videos to convert...I certainly would go the burner route. Make sure that you purchase Roxio Creator "PRO"

Roxio - DVD Burning Software - Easy VHS to DVD - DVD Decoder - Video Converter - CD Burning

Or Nero 10 Multimedia Suite or the Multimedia Platinum HD

Nero - Video editing, burning, backup software ? Nero 10

These suites will give you the ability to burn your HD videos in HD and watch on TV. I use Nero, personally. Roxio isn't too shabby, either

Those will work fine! I believe the program will burn 5 disks. BTW...make sure to make a copy of your SWSETUP folder from the C drive. On my Envy, the folder was 7 GB. Not sure of the size on the Pavillion. Looks like my son's Pavillion is going to ship late. Today was his date, and no notice, whatsoever...My Envy shipped 6 days late as well...oh well!

but there are no archive quality dvds in the dvd+r format, at least in Verbatim... TY JVC has them but they sell in bulk only, like 100-pack or 50-pack.... I don't need so many... Will I have any disadvantages with the -r format?
