I see that you are correct. Before HP never showed the quick ship model as the price on front page. When I clicked on the laptop to view all the details now I see that the base price is still $1099.99. HP is trying to be sneaky now by listing the quick ship price. Thank you for correcting me.

I just got my laptop yesterday and did a minimal system install. I'm loving it so far, but I can't seem to get the volume hot keys to work with the fn button. Is there something else I have to install?

Also, are there any programs that I might be missing after the minimal install? Sorry if this has been answered before, I can't seem to get the search to work

Well it's dv6t specific, since the HP logo is like the Apple logo on the lid I wonder if it would be as easy as it is for the Macbooks to put some transparency paper in front of the light. (Like this http://www.instructables.com/files/deriv/FIS/FX6F/GERPD5M7/FISFX6FGERPD5M7.MEDIUM.jpg)

Are you holding the Fn key while using the function keys? Have you tried not pressing the Fn key while using them?

Bios has a setting for Action Keys (On/Off, this basically acts like the Fn key is down at all times, needing to press it to use the F1-12 keys. Should default to On. Otherwise I don't see any reason it shouldn't work one way or the other (Fn up or down, one should work).

I did a minimal install and am not having any problems, nor with my fresh install with the Drivers installed. :/
The minimal is the one that boots up, then has the custom HP screen which takes forever to install all the minimal drivers, one at a time, silently in the back ground (after Win7 installs)?

I think the 2720 is approximately 10% faster than the 2630 (depending on usage I guess), and it has VT-D (Direct I/O, Virtualization enhancements) and hardware support for faster RAM (you'd need to upgrade it yourself, think it currently maxes at 1600, CPU supports 1866, HP Bios doesn't (anyone know different?)) and AES Encryption Hardware support (Accelerates BitLocker encryption, say). If you don't know what those are it probably doesn't concern you.

Is 2.2GHz (compared to a base of 2.0) worth an extra $150? 2.3GHz and an extra 2MB of L3 Cache worth an extra $350? To me it wasn't but to some it is. 2630QM is just fine for the average consumer. My .02.

The 10% from the 2720 is significant enough, in my opinion. The 2.3 is not worth it, though. With a good coupon the amount for the upgrade should be less than the $150.

Stick with the 2630QM. The 2720QM has more instructions and is about 14% faster in turbo, but you probably won't notice the difference unless you have a specific need for either of those advantages.

Though of course don't even think about processor upgrades until you upgrade to the 1920x1080 display

Has anyone used a USB 3.0 HDD yet? The new one I got today was transferring along fine at around 80MBps and then a quarter way through decided to cut back to standard USB 2.0 rate at about 25Mbps :/

Edit: Just figured out not all 4 ports on the new DV7 are USB3.0. All good now.

I hope this wont become a recurring issue, running memory and HDD tests right now :(

Do u guys think that the dv7 will do better than the dv6 when it comes to COOLING just because it's larger and less compact, and possibly last longer??...And is that the reason why HP has free 2-year warranties for the 17inchers? or
They will heat up about the same?

Wow, I've never felt more stupid. All my previous laptops required you to hold the Fn key to use them.

Also, to anyone on the fence. I've had it for two days now and love it so far. The screen is amazing (get the 1080p), and I've been playing games at high setting with no problems.

Alot of people here knock the build quality but it seems good to me. It feels soldily built and is thin for a 15inch. I was upset I could not find a 14inch with a good screen and relunctantly went with the dv6t because of that. I'm happy I did, it's barely bigger than my old Sony CW and the extra screen real estate is great.

The only build issue I have noticed is the bezel where your wrists rest is a little rough as others have said, but it's not a big deal.

Okay simple answer is this. You have a tv right with the option of Vivid that is super bright and at first looks cool that's the brightview 1600x900. The 1900x1080 is the option on your tv called Cinema the natural viewing for your eyes or standard still better than brightview. The money for the 1900x1080 is well worth it because you will have the options of changing it to brightview. Getting brightview from the start you have to make adjustments so out of the box ready for viewing "no". Did that help out?

Hey guys, I need some info. On a dv6-61xx series with i7 and 6770M all are working perfect. One minor issue i noticed before and after doing a minimal recovery (to avoid all the worthless third party software).

System boots up very fast to desktop and then it takes about 5sec to load ati ccc and then about 15-20sec! to load hp connection manager and display the status pop-up window (when i say load, i am looking for the taskbar icon to figure out). I know, from many other hp laptops, about ati ccc being delayed at startup but why hp connection manager takes so long?

Also, can you tell me how to update the graphics driver? Do i need to download intel as well? And if yes, which should i install first, intel or ati?

    Thanks.

HP Connection Manager was one of the first things I uninstalled. You don't need it, unless you specifically want it. Just download it from HP on your Drivers support page. Should be around 300MB file.

Hi everyone! I just bought (2 days ago) a dv7-6135dx model with a 750 hitachi hdd. Today i noticed a random click sound coming from the laptop in sporadic intervals. It is extremely faint and each time clicks only once. I've heard roughly 6 clicks today and am wondering if this is normal. I'm award of the click of death but because this sound only clicks once and not a regular click im reluctant to believe its COD. Any ideas on what this could be or if its normal? the tests ive done with smart have all shown no problems with the hdd. Thanks for any insight you can provide!

I don't have the XPS yet but a friend has one identical to the one I'm getting. When all is said and done they are on equal footing except for 2 issues that may or may not matter to people. The much talked about switching issue and you can't OC the 6770M (in the 61XX series). The 555M is slightly more powerful but it has DDR3 compared to the 6770M's DDR5 so they even out. My friend has his 555M OC'd and gives him almost as good of numbers as a stock GTX460M. I've watched the same Blu-Ray movie on both units and I found the black levels seemed a little better on the XPS BUT could've been due to room lighting. Note that the DV7T has a matte screen and the XPS comes with a glossy. Doesn't matter to me but does to some.

HP and Dell have both equally worthless customer service. I chatted with a Dell rep online and asked him if the non-3D XPS comes with 4 memory slots. He of course said yes. I know it only comes with 2. But now I have a record of him telling me it has 4 so when I get my XPS the first thing I'm doing is calling Dell and saying the rep lied to me. I'll threaten to send it back then proceed to milk them out of as much money as I can. They make it too easy..

Thanks, that is helpful. Do you also happen to know:

    1) I've heard various issues with switchable graphics after updating ati drivers. Any recommentation? Should intel graphics update be installed too? Does it matter which is installed first?

    2) Does HP have any program to set the battery charge, like Vaios where for eg. you can set the battery charge up to 30% if you are mainly using it on ac power so the battery does not wear quickly?

So it continues, I couldn't get into windows even 1 time, it just hangs on the logo and doesn't even enter through safe mode. I tried to do a recovery from the image that should be in that waste of space drive that comes with the laptop but for some reason I cant seem to do any recovery from there...luckily using the win7 dvd and abusing the "get driver" option in the recovery I am using it to copy over my SWSetup folder to a Pen drive. Next up will be to wipe this human feces off my computer and reinstall everything from scratch which of course will mean I will have to deal direct with microsoft to get this authenticated again (anyone had experience with this? how much of a pain is it?).

Is it the same product key that came with the laptop? As long as you haven't changed the hardware too much it should activate fine.

I have the 750 gb hdd too and it has the same clicks, or clacks - loud ones every once in a while, which gets insanely annoying. At first I thought it was due to the hdd malfunctioning but after hard disk diagnostics and scans there were no problems found. For my hdd I found the cause: the advanced power management feature - I think the sound comes from the hdd head frequently parking to save power. I used the crystaldiskinfo utility to turn off advanced power management feature (under functions, aam/apm control: hit disable apm - to save the settings for every boot you must click resident and startup under the function menu). After that, I have not heard any clicking or clacking in a while. Alternatively, you can use hitachi feature tools to disable apm on their website, but it did not detect my hdd when I tried to use it.

    here's the link: http://crystalmark.info/?lang=en

Going to power options and setting the hdd to never turn off did not get rid of the noise btw.

    Hey guys,

I just realized my dv6t has a throttling issue. When I run MSI Kombustor with Prime95, it seems to have the CPU clock down to 1297 MHz. With Prime Alone, it seems fine. Are you guys seeing this issue?

We had the same issue on the Envy board. Every single one of us would see throttling down to 800 MHZ. I emailed some case managers with the thread and they got it taken care of with a new bios release. Perhaps you should set up a separate thread in this board and then people can take the test. Here is how to do it...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...vy-17-sandy-bridge-awaiting-hps-fix-read.html

    Temporary fix

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/579857-running-throttlestop-envy-17-sb.html#post7510955

It can be a long issue. If everyone with a Pavillion can take the test from the first thread and post results in a separate thread, I will pass it along and see if someone will address it...

I learned the hard way, that if you think there might be an issue with the HD, run the HP diagnostics from Bios (F2 on boot). Write down any codes given by the diagnostic if it fails.

AFTER that, it could very well be the APM kicking in that previous posters mentioned. I'd just run the diags before going to bed to make sure there isn't anything wrong with the HD.

You have to do that on the Macs too if I'm not mistaken.

Can't you just put the paper in front of the HP part though?
I'm trying to picture it in my head but I can't think of it, we need a dedicated thread for this I think.

So I went and re-installed windows....then installed the latest drivers....after trying to reboot it once again hangs at the logo saying "starting Windows". Considering my first problem was with the ati driver, I think something is reacting badly with the ATI/Intel video drivers that is making it hang on boot. Has anyone ever experienced this? I would hate to have to send my laptop back in particular because I am running out of time. I have to get my laptop set up and running within the next 4 weeks....
I wonder if there is some issue with the video card not sitting right or something, I did notice after I installed the video driver (but before rebooting) that the radeon 6770 had a warning triangle on it in device manager but I figured it was simply because I hadn't restarted at that point.

Any one has had any experience with HP warranty service?

UPDATE: After trying to go through the recovery process with the win7 DVD drive, it doesn't show the HDD anywhere....I try to do a startup repair and says it cant find the HDD....even though I was just in the system and recently installed the damn thing....I ran a HP tools disk drive check and shows no problems.

I managed to get into windows through safemode and disabled the ATI card and now I can get into windows. I show a code 43 for the Intel driver and ofcourse ATI has to be disabled if I want to enter windows. After trying any and all versions of he drivers including the modded ones without success I called HP to get this serviced. Its obviously some hardware problem but still they want to run this through the process. Since I couldn't access recovery on this thing (I had wiped its useless partition during one of the re-installs) and they weren't happy about that. I had to pay $30usd to get a recovery disk and if that doesnt work I expect them to refund me the money, if they don't want to reimburse me for something that I didn't want in the first place then this will be going back under their 21 day return policy and I will get something else (maybe dell or asus).

EDIT: What is everyone's experience with HP service? If the recovery disk doesn't work (which I know it wont) I am afraid of sending it in for service, it may take me past my 21 day mark for return. It arrived June 30th so I guess I have until about July 20th to return this. What do you think, RMA it or try my luck with service?

RMA it. I did that with two units and got a refund processed when Fedex took possession of it on it's way back to Tennessee. RMA's are easy with HP.

I'm about to buy a laptop and this is my top choice and I have a few questions

    Is the 1920x1080 worth it?
How long is the 6 cell battery life, and how long is the 9 cell battery life
Does this laptop get hot to the point of getting annoying
    How loud are the fans

I wouldn't consider anything but the matte finish HD screen (I had both types of screens). There are many posters who feel the same as I do re the HD screen. JUST GET IT!

Fan noise never bothered me at all. I use an Antec cooler pad when gaming. You want to hear a loud fan, fire up a PS3 in a warm room and play video games on it for a little while. The laptop fan is several orders of magnitude quieter.

Guys... I had asked a question earlier in this forum which would help me decide which one should I go with, dv6 or dv7...however to no response... I'm re-posting the same question expecting a response from you guys... thanks

Do u guys think that the dv7 will do better than the dv6 when it comes to COOLING just because it's larger and less compact, and possibly last longer??...And is that the reason why HP has free 2-year warranties for the 17inchers? or
They will heat up about the same?
