@ hockeymass: thx glad someone understands.

I'm pretty pissed at the lack of consistency in customer service with HP. Page 577 of this very thread a user posted that she got %15 off her laptop cause they sent her the wrong color. I got two bad laptops and my offer is $30, then $50? After being promised more on an earlier call, no thank you.

AMD chips are great for desktops but run way too hot in laptops! that's why very very few people on this board have laptops with AMD chips in them...

if you look back to maybe 1-2 years ago, tons of people had heating issues with their dv7s and lesser models all with AMD chips (turion and what not)...

i dont know what the fix would be...

Does anyone else have un-even touchpad left and right mouse buttons? My left button seems pretty level with the touchpad, but the right button has a noticeable dip at the upper left corner.

In fact, my right touchpad button is kind of like a see-saw... if I put pressure on the left the right rises slightly, but if I put pressure on the right, the left rises significantly.

    I have a simple question,
how can I make the Intel GPU is default one not the ATI in switchable graphic setting. I have no option in the panel except defaulting to power saving GPU when using battery.

Not a big fan. Strangely enough, ONE time I performed a minimal install, I saw the default black HP background. The second time (failed drive) I cannot find it... Weird, I really liked it. I should probably just look up some custom themes/backgrounds...

Hi guys, whats the best way to remove smudges or fingerprints from the dv6. I tries using water and soft tissue, but that just makes the places more noticable. The case just looks so cool, and i want it to show :D

I used a drop of monitor cleaning liquid on a microfiber cloth and rubbed it and it went off. But, its a pain to do it often. May be we should all start wearing some gloves/covers that won't create this in the first place :)

I wonder if there is a protective cover (like a screen protector) that can be applied over the lid.

Out of the 3 DV6T-6XXX that have passed through my hands two had touchpads like that. The left buttons are okay with the right buttons drooping a little towards the middle of the touchpad. The first DV6 (6000 CTO, which I used the longest) seemed to have this get a little worse over time. This leads me to believe it's a design issue with the touchpad.

That first DV6 also had a really annoying squeak that happened with some keys on the keyboard, like little nails on little chalkboards. I got a wireless keyboard real quick.

Mmm I do remember my left Ctrl key or something sounding weird coming up. Was using headphones though.

Yay Windows just added 3 bad sectors to the boot record or whatever. I only saw 2 files reported with bad sectors and didn't notice any in the free space though.

Hoping my BSoD's were caused by hard drive and not anything else. The BSoD's didn't point at any ATI system drivers..

I read somewhere that there might be some complication with regards to updating the graphic drives? That we are supposed to update with HPs drivers not AMDs directly because of the intel integrated card?

I ask this because I'm was downloading an 'optional' windows update. Just cancelled it because I recalled this

Did I misread something and should I go on with it, or something else? How am I supposed to update my graphics drivers?

Is there a way to force the functions keys to only work by hitting fn+key instead of fn,key (to be clear, I want it so that you have to hit the two keys at the same time and not by hitting fn key and then the other key)?? (Please not I'm not talking about changing the bios menu to make the function keys actually need the fn key)

My main issue is that I keep hitting the fn key (when I go for ctrl.... work laptop has the two keys swapped) and then I go to type and I hit (for example) 'b' and turn off/on beats.

    thanks for any insight

No, the wireless card in this laptop does not support 5ghz out of the box. However, on this page of the modding thread, there is an HP part that supposedly will work with the dv6/7, and has 5ghz, but not bluetooth. This is actually the card from the probook/elitebook.

I have the Intel 6200N in my Envy and my son's Pavillion has the Intel 1000N. Both connect at 130 kbps. Understand...that if you want 300 kbps...you have to have a dual frequency router! My D-Link DIR-655 only does 2.4 GHZ, so the max I can connect with is 150 kbps...pretty much am already there. To achieve up to 300 kbps...you need connection in the 5.8 GHZ range. Does your router do that???

Does your router have gigabit ethernet ports? Only higher end routers do, everything else will just be a standard 10/100 Mbps ethernet port.

To get a gigabit link, you need at least a CAT5e or later (CAT6, CAT6a ....)cables, an interface that supports the gigabit link on both ends.

    --------
    @Bob
Your wireless link is ridiculously slow also, not supported either. Are you sure it is Kilo, not Mega.

Also, 300 Mbits, 450 Mbit links and higher are supported in the 2.4 Ghz range, but only when wide channel width is enabled, supported by the wireless AP, and not overlapped by neighboring active channels as specified in the 802.11N Standard.

Actually, I think the reason your 5 year old HP connects to the 5ghz is that it was made when wireless 802.11a was still used. Wireless 802.11a can connect to 5ghz networks, but the speed is the same as using 802.11b/g. So connecting your new laptop to the 2.4ghz network will still be up to three times as fast as the old laptop connected to the 5ghz network. However, if you were to get a new wireless card and connect to the 5ghz network with 80211.n, you would be connected up to twice that speed. Namely, 300mb/s.

I recommend anyone hoping to get support for the 6100 series notebooks for 802.11a/5ghz/2x2 wireless to return their notebook and get a Dell XPS 15/17 instead. This issue and the incorrect part number have less chance of being fixed than the AMD PowerXpress 4 OpenGL issue from what I can tell.

Also, has anyone figured out how to resize the desktop / fix overscan when connecting to a TV via HDMI? If there is no solution, this on top of all the other problems will definitely be the death of this dv6t.

Not sure what all of the fuss is about, but I have no problems connecting wirelessly up to 300Mb/s with the intel 1030 2.4ghz card in my DV7TQE-6001 and my DLink DIR-825 router, and have no need for the 5ghz band in a laptop. Yes, you get a cleaner signal, but at the cost of reduced range. The intel 1000 and 1030 have amazing range for internal cards and will connect to practically anything! Personally, I reserve the 5ghz band on my home network for media streaming directly between my router (internet and network storage) and 5ghz bridge in my media room.

neothe0ne, what exactly are you seeing in the overscan? Is it multiple colors like on broadcast cable? I've hooked up to several displays now including Samsung LCDs and my projector via HDMI, and have had no overscan problems, although if I did, both displays support overscan or zoom to avoid the problem.

My Samsung requires me to set the HDMI input (PC/DVI) _name_ to "PC" in order to have the computer connected at 1080p over HDMI properly. You may need to find a setting like that. Check your TV manual, it's likely a TV issue.

Sorry, you're right. After some more investigation, this is what I have come up with: As far as I can tell, both 2.4 and 5ghz can connect at up to 300mbps, however, there are many more available channels on the 5ghz band. What that means is that there can be far more people connected and still deliver the same data rates. Also, there are fewer 5ghz devices than 2.4, meaning the band will be even less populated than 2.4. Another option is a dual band USB network adapter. This would theoretically use both bands, resulting in speeds of up to 600mb/s.

Question, Will a dual band card make a big difference to me as my home internet speed is just 3.0 mb/s, thats way less that 300mbps... So will the faster card improve my browsing speed?

3.0 mb/s? that's way lower than even the 54mb/s of wireless g, which is the standard of several years ago. How far are you from your router? what's the model of your router? Depending on what is causing the low speeds, yes is might improve the speed. Another thing you might do is upgrade the router. if the router is 802.11g, then upgrading to one that supports 802.11n would theoretically improve the range to twice that of g.

I mean the internet speed from my ISP is 3.0mb/s... so that's my bandwidth... I sit not very far from the router and the router is a good one, bgn... When I'm connected it says 54.0 mbps in my laptop...I get upload speeds of 350-400 kbps (downloading speed) So will I see those speeds go up if I switch to the dual band card on my dv7tqe?

if you're getting 54mb/s from the router, your router is probably using wireless g, not n. wireless g doesn't support 5ghz, so if that's all your router has, then no, you won't see an improvement. What may make a difference is to upgrade your router to a model that supports 802.11n. Even single channel n functioning on just the 2.4ghz band will almost triple your network speeds. However, if the service from your ISP is 3.0mb/s, then most of the speed improvement you will see will be within the network, rather than to the internet. how ever, if you want dual band to improve in-network speeds, you will need a dual band router as well. This is just what I have picked up after a few hour's investigation.

Oh, sorry, just saw that your router is wireless n. Therefore, for some reason, your router isn't using it. Go into your router settings and see if you can enable 802.11n. If you can, you should see an increase in speed.

Hmm odd, try deleting the old lan driver and reinstall it. Make sure you use the silent install or it going to ask you to connect the jack.

If it still 100 mbits link, you might have a physically damaged jack on the laptop.

Without the 2nd pair, it will cap off at 100 mbit.

    @dark rider

Are you sure it's an Intel 1030 on your dv7t-6001?? It's not in the product specification ... I'm sure its an Intel 1000 with a BCM2070 BT module.

I also noticed they are now offering Bluetooth 4.0 now but those model don't have Intel wireless.

and one more thing, what do you mean by second pair? (EDIT: nevermind found it on wiki....)

    thanks for the assistance :)

I have no option in the panel except defaulting to power saving GPU when using battery.
