No idea, a good hint that it only applies to retail models of non Intel chipsets.

Just got mine today. It said held in facility on Yahoo when I checked the tracking last night, and then today I checked and it was held here in Melbourne FL but they wouldn't deliver on Sat, so I called up and picked it up!

I really like it, the keyboard snaps were'nt all in, at first i pressed my keyboard and it snapped and I thought I had broken something, but then I snapped the rest of them in.

I just made all of my recovery dvd's, and formatted (left recovery and tools partitions), going to install fresh win7, I LOVE the steel gray.

Only complaint is the keyboard, it does have some flex, but that is easily forgivable if it has no other problems. great laptop for $970 (before tax)

It is a little bluish, but other than that great. I love it. 1920x1080 was an absolute requirement for me. I think I have the LG screen, which I believe is the less quality one

It seems to happen in every game for me.

Tried turning VSync on in the game, and in the CCC. I don't think they help, because the graphics are routed through the Intel chip, which probably has Vsync off, or doens't sync with the AMD one.

One way to get everythnig going nicely is to use D3DOverride (comes with Rivatuner) to force Triple Buffering and VSync, that works great for me. Although I don't know if VAC would consider it a cheat, so I put up with the screen tearing on TF2 =(

As for the wireless, I don't think these machines do 5GHz Wifi, which means Wireless N is unlikely to work. I had to disable N in order to be able to connect to my wireless network =/

On the contrary, wireless n should work perfectly. However, it will be limited to the 2.4ghz band in this laptop. Until we find a way to replace the wireless card with one that, a: the bios accepts, and b: supports 5ghz wireless. You can follow the progress of this at the modding thread.

Guys, right now I'm using a wireless router + dsl modem that I purchased from At&t along with the internet service.. Now, this thing only has 2.4ghz b/g support... I got that one for about $100 last year... If I want to replace, should I just buy a wireless N router and I'll be good? Or I need a separate modem for it? I mean there are numerous router on Amazon but I'm not sure whether they come with an inbuilt modem... With this one, I get a signal strength loss just about 10m away from it....
On the other hand, even if I buy a dual band 5ghz premium router, will I be able to take full advantage of it on my dv7tqe with apparently low class wifi card?
Also, my internet bandwidth speed is just 3.0mbps, which is probably not very high. So will a premium router be really worth of using with such a slow internet speed? I get speeds of 54.0mbps on wireless and 100mbps wired... Which is pretty standard considering the single band router with only b/g support...
Also, what are the internet bandwidth speeds that you guys are paying for to your ISPs? I might want to upgrade my speed to something faster...
    Thanks guys....

    Couple quick questions.

    1. When I program my finger reader to open webpages, it always open 2 pages; one blank page and the actual web page. How do I stop it form opening a blank page?

    2. I tried to play a bluray disc for the first time and it says unsupported format in PowerDVD Suite 10. Windows Media Player says disc not recognizable. Regular DVDs works great. The bluray disc is a US/CAN and works in home bluray player.

    Really?

What settings are you using for TF2/CCC/Intel Driver? (and what versions?)

My 6014 doesn't like Vsync, the only way I've managed to get games to look nice without hideous tearing is to force Triple Buffering for DirectX via D3DOverride.

I've tried updating to newer Catalyst drivers (11.5b hotfix) in case they fixed VSync, but they cause my machine to consistently lockup a short time after logging in.

    I give up.

    I'm going Sager.

Not worth wasting my money on a machine with questionable hardware capabilities, build quality, and drivers.

It might be rewarding in the short-term to develop solutions to fix the dynamic graphics on Windows or Linux, but I need a 4-year laptop.

Sorry guys, but you'll need to wait for more qualified people or HP/AMD to step up.

I'll still be here as a liaison, but that's it.

Quick question, will the lack of openGL support on the descrete GPU be a problem for me if I don't do games? I do some HD video editing with premiere, and photo editing with Photoshop. Other than that, just regular web, e-mail, document creation, and some movies. Probably nothing the HD 3000 can't handle.

There's not only a lack of OpenGL support, the switching mechanism can/will refuse some DX9/DX10/DX10.1 games.

Try using Intel Graphics... THAT works on mine. I have a 6000 series and believe I may have the same issue. I have gone through hoops with both HP and Cyberlink and they want me to restore to factory image and report back ... which I don't feel like doing. Please respond via PM (also).

My question is not whether all games will work, I don't plan to games at all. Will premiere and photoshop use the dGPU? If not, will the HD 3000 be able to handle 1080p video editing? Also I may do some work with After Effects. Will that run well?

There is a chance this has already come up at some point, but I was curious as to whether or not a 5400 rpm hard drive would decrease overall performance noticeably. I ordered my dv6tqe a week ago, and I wasn't sure if this was something worth exchanging my laptop over when it finally arrives.

Yes, it does make a significant difference - From my personal experiences, hard drive speed has the biggest and most noticeable effect on general performance.

I found the 5400rpm drives in my dv7 unbearably slow (Windows bootup took ages, applications started sluggishly, etc), so I put in the 500GB 7200rpm Momentus XT from my old laptop in, and it now boots up in 1 minute, Firefox & Visual Studio start up in no time at all, and the system feels way more responsive.

A faster hard drive is almost always worth it, unless all you do is gaming and you don't care about loading times, and if it takes forever to boot up, load Firefox, and do other tasks.

Depending on the cost of exchanging for a faster 7200rpm drive, you might be better off buying one and putting it in yourself. Hard drives are pretty cheap, and it gives you the choice of what drive you want (vanilla 7200, hybrid drive a la Momentus XT, MLC SSD, SLC SSD)

Hard drive speed (in my opinion) has more impact on real world performance than the other components. You spend more time waiting on the hard drive to read data than you will on anything else.

If you want benchmarks, I have two drives in my dv7, the 7200rpm Momentus XT, and the 5400rpm Toshiba MK7 drive with the factory default HP install. I can time how long it takes to boot up from each. they both run Windows 7, and have roughly equivalent amounts of startup programs (Antivirus, etc)
I'm happy to do tests to demonstrate how running a 5400rpm drive will make you feel like you're using a crappy slow netbook :p

lol. Thanks for the quick response! I'll take your word for it though. I'm beating myself up over not paying the 20 dollars to upgrade to the 7200 rpm hard drive. It would probably be cheaper to exchange the laptop assuming I can still get 30% off my order by the time I get it. The wait times to get these laptops can be quite long, although my build estimate wasn't too bad compared to other peoples I have read about on other threads.

Thanks for your help, but I just downloaded PowerDVD 11. That works. It gave me a blu-ray tab to play movies. Version 10 didn't have a blu-ray tab.

Now I just want to know if simple pass will open only 1 web page instead of 2 when I scan my fingers.

    dark rider,

Have you ran any tests to verify the 300Mbps or are you just going off of what Windows says you are getting? I have the same router but have not run any tests yet. I was kind of peeved as well that we can not stick a 5Ghz card in these laptops and have it work. I just don't like the fact that a wireless technology that has been around as long as the 5Ghz 802.11a/n will not work on these new super lappies!

I noticed some confusion when people are talking about router speeds.

Remember that when the router speeds of 300Mbps, 450Mbps, etc. are mentioned, these are for INTERNAL network speeds - or rather how fast you can share and transfer data amongst devices that are on your network/connected to the router.

This will not necessarily speed up your internet bandwidth, since most people only have 3Mbps to 20Mbps.

To take advantage of the speeds higher than 54Mbps, all of the network devices - router, wireless card in the network device your are connecting to the router, etc have to support these higher speeds and standards (ie. 802.11n). Also remember that with older 802.11g routers that said they have a speed of 54Mbps, you will be lucky to see half of that in real world tests and usage. The newer routers are much better in this aspect.

A couple of good networking websites for reviews, etc:

Hi everyone i have an HP Pavilion dv6-6115TX
    Intel Core i5 Processor i5-2410M, 4GB PC3-10600DDR3-1333,500GB @ 5400 RPM), intel HD/AMD Radeon (switchable graphics/dynamic mode) 6490M Graphics Card with 1 GB, windows 7 64bit home basic.

I dont want to play very high end games but whatever game i select in systemrequirementlab(can you run it) shows that my graphic card is not compatible.
After reading this and the other thread i understand that nothing should be wrong with direct X games n only GL games.
Can anyone tell me how to know whether a game runs on Direct X or OpenGL 3? also will i be able to play assassins creed 2 and 3(low res)
    thanks

I have the 5400rpm drive and it is quite fast. My boot up is like less than 30 seconds, which is reasonable. I do notice a dfference between this and my wd black 7200rpm on my desktop in some things like copying files.

Yes it's possible, and someone from earlier in this thread did it. You need the caddy to hold the hard drive and fit in the optical drive space. I think it was this caddy.

    Yes but not full N.

The full N only offered in dual band cards only.

Guys, I got my dv7tqe yesterday... the packaging was awful.. the box was dented from both the top sides... the tapes were stuck improperly, almost hanging out of it..!
When I unboxed it, I was surprised to see that it doesn't have the plastic cover over the back of the lid, which is should because a rep told me that the steel gray costs more because its a premium color choice with a plastic covering on the lid....Instead, its got a possibly oil stain on the uncovered lid... I didn't even turn it on as I suspected that HP has sent me some refurbished or used stuff
Yeaaa.... there is a scratch mark on the back where it says Helwett Packard...
So, I was also wondering to suck some credits out of HP. So guys, please give me suggestions which might be the best reason I could be offered credits for...
    1) Bad packaging and that oil stain and scratch
    2) current drivers can't run OpenGl apps
    3) the screen is possibly very blue
    4) OR suggest another reason that may sound valid for a credit..

I got it shipped exactly on the estimated date, no delay reason...

802.11a is a very old standard ... it's usually used in corporate environment.

But since it uses 5 ghz spectrum, it became why not include it anyways.

The 5ghz is more stable than the 2.4 ghz but you get a hefty internal speed bonus (*for N network and depending on both AP and Client Link) at the cost of range.

Even on old A/B/G cards, you should see better network/internet speeds when using A on the 5GHz of a dual-band ABGN router instead of the 2.4GHz B/G/N

Disable Turbo Boost first, that'll have a large effect on temps ;)

Maybe he's not counting the time spent logging in and at the BIOS screen?
When I had the 5400rpm drive in it took *much* longer than that to get from power off to logged in and responsive. Even with the 7200rpm Hybrid SSD I have now, it still takes a minute from turning on to being logged in with everything loaded.

Stealth107, how does one disable turbo boost, and if there is a way to disable it, is there a way to enable it constantly? Sorry I don't know a lot about this, but hell, with a cooler it would be nice to have that option. Closest thing to an OC that us DV6qe users have, right?

Using HP's CoolSense program and changing to Quiet Mode or Coolest Mode will disable Turbo Boost (Although it might also impact on a bunch of other things).

There's a tool called ThrottleStop that will let you enable and disable Turbo Boost:

Once you've loaded it up, click "Turn On" to enable changes, then tick the "Disable Turbo" option, and click "Save". Easy :D

Turbo Boost is already enabled constantly in a way - It'll always use Turbo if the CPU is under medium-heavy use, unless the CPU is too hot. There wouldn't be any advantage in forcing it on - If you have a good cooler, it'll always go to the top Turbo clock when you need it, and then slow down to stay cool when you don't need it :)

Hey guys, my dv6t is supposed to arrive this afternoon, and I was wondering if it comes with software that can play blu-rays. If not, are there any free ones that you recommend? Ordinarily I would just test it, but I don't actually have any blu-ray discs yet. This is my first blu-ray player.

yes it comes with Cyberlink powerDVD. I doubt there is any free software because Blu Ray is proprietary and requires licensing or royalties or something

Np, I've been using Klite Mega for almost 2 years now with VERY few problems (which has a modified Windows media player classic if you choose to install it with the codecs). It *might* take a little setup and study but its worth it. the Win7codec pack I haven't done much with but I hear its good ( hear its simpler too). These both supplement VLC or such players.

Thanks for the replies, does the PowerDVDit comes with have a blu-ray codec installed, or do I have to get one?
