My dv7-6000 was BlueRay ready when I got it you shouldn't need anything more. I opted for the "Clean wipe and fresh install" of Windows 7 without the "extra" that comes with a typical Laptop. THATs why (among other reasons [being tech inclined]) I installed Klite, it has a few other nice things in it as well.

Ok, I just recieved my laptop, and I love it. The 1366x768 screen is really not that bad. It's better than the screen of my old laptop, anyway. It runs beautifully. I can play 4k youtube video smoothly over WiFi. I love the beats audio, I thought the audio was rather un-impressive until I figured out that beats is turned off by default. It seems to make a more noticable difference with the speakers than the headphones. I would not go so far as to say the dark umber aluminum chasis is a fingerprint magnet, however it does aquire marks from hands. The display bezel, on the other hand, is quite ready and willing to accept any and all fingerprints available. what software do you all use to find out which GPU is doing what?

I like using GPU-Z and CPU-Z. HwMonitor and HwInfo are also popular.

I have to say that I have been going through my days lately looking forward to getting home and playing with my laptop. It's probably the second best PC I've ever owned (the best being my beastly Gen 1 XPS).

I don't have a lot of faith in what Windows reports. My router reports connection speeds and thoroughput, so I'm pretty confident that it will actually connect at 300Mbps and see those speeds.

It's not the newest version of PowerDVD, (10.3 vs. 11.X IIRC), but it's the full license and supports BD playback without issue. No worries if you do the Minimal System Image either. It remains as installed afterwards. Personally, I like the fact that you can also have it display to a secondary display and surf in the background on the laptop screen at the same time.

Ok, I have been using it for less than a half hour, and I have noticed something wierd. Every five minutes or so, I hear a squeak-like sound through the headphones. It sounds sort of like a hard drive noise, but it's through the headphone jack. I think I remember someone brought this up a while ago, but I don't want to look through 300+ pages of thread to find it. DOes anyone remember what the issue was?

I don't know if any of you know about Armagetron Advanced, but it is a tron based game in 3d. It is really not that demanding. For instance, on my 5 year old sony vaio with pentium m 1.73ghz using the integrated GPU I get between 30 and 50 fps. On the dv6t with the i5 2410m and HD 6770m, I get 15fps with the same settings! This is ridiculous. Any ideas about why this would happen? My sister, who has a dell inspiron 15r (i3) with just the HD 3000 gets over 120fps. Even if the my laptop is just using the integrated gpu, shouldn't I get at least that?

Guys, I am about to move to a new apartment with my new dv7tqe :D
So I will obviously sign up for an internet connection in the new apartment.. The only options I have in that newer area are At&T and Time Warner...
After little research, At&t seems to be cheaper than Time Warner, however these are not the best At&T rates as I had gotten cheaper plans last summer for my current apartment. So considering speed, service and prices, which of the two would you guys recommend me to go with.. I will be going for a plan of ~$30 a month...
Also, I know that I will have to buy a 2wire modem+router from At&T... which only supports b/g... So I was wondering if they have newer version of it or some other model which would support N...
And, what about Time Warner, do they provide at least a free modem or I will have to buy it just like At&T...
    Thanks

And also please recommend a good fast router that would be compatible with the default wifi card in the dv7... I mean not something way higher than required, for example dual band (I dont think dv7 has a dual band wifi card).. Just something fast that my dv7 can take full advantage of...

Hello, it is weird as I just installed it on my dv6tqe and I get around 241 fps ands sometimes up to 280 fps, this is with the integrated graphics card. I mostly switched every settings on. So I'm not sure why you are not getting around the amount of fps. You might want to reinstall the game or check the settings.

In terms of real world performance, if you're just using the router for internet access and not heavily using local area file transfers and stuff like that, you wouldn't see any difference between G and N anyway.

You can get pretty much any wireless router. Seriously, it makes basically no difference. As long as it supports 802.11g or n, you're all set. Any bottlenecking will be on the ISP's end.

Well, I re-installed, and without changing ANYTHING, on the first start of the game, I still get between 14 and 27 fps. I don't know, I set the game to performance in catylist, and still, low fps. I set all the settings in the detail screen settings to off, and I get just over 100 fps. This is a good fps, but it's ridiculous that I have to do t hat on this system.

but some of us do. My HP dv3t supported 5ghz to my knowledge, and I know my Envy 14 with Centrino 6200 did. Both are/were significantly faster than my current dv6t.

It also depends a lot on where you live. I live in a condo tower in one of the most populace cities in North America. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of 2.4 Ghz b/g/n networks I can scan for in my condo. the overlap and interference is ridiculous. 5 Ghz is both uncluttered and fast, but it's range limit also keeps working distance pretty well contained within my condo. Still faster than on 2.4 Ghz to boot.

Hello, I recently bought a dv6t with the 8mb cache intel i7. I think the 2.3. Also the radeon 6770 with 2GB. Two questions. Is the only way to configure the switchable graphics on a per program basis without doing some modding or adding aftermarket drivers? I'd rather stick with ATI (AMD) drivers.

I also purchased the 1080P 15.6inch screen. Why is it in windows I cant select 1280x720 (720p) as a resolution for my desktop (and there aren't any options for that in catalyst control center), and why can't I use 720p as a custom resolution in hitman bloodmoney for example, but 1080p works fine?

Just got my DV6, same LG 1080p panel. I don't notice a blue tint though.

There's a keyboard is good, except there's a lot of flex near the arrow keys.

Yes, the 61xx series can only be configured to switch on a per program basis. I don't actually think there's any way to get it to run soley off the 6770M.
I don't think anyone's found a way to change this with custom drivers, since the 60xx series drivers (with maual switching, which would let you only use the 6770M) aren't installable on the 61xx's.

Here is an official statement from HP:

Official HP statement on Switchable Graphics and Open GL Functionality

We understand that there is a concern about switchable graphics and OpenGL functionality.

    Switchable Graphics:

HP has a document about how to configure the ATI® Mobility Radeon® Switchable graphics feature. This

document also describes the differences between fixed and dynamic switchable graphic modes and how

    to use each effectively.

See: How to Configure ATI Mobility Radeon Switchable Graphics - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

    Open GL Functionality:

To operate certain OpenGL applications, you will need to install the latest graphics driver (SP 53025)

which can be found here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53025.exe . This download

provides Intel Graphics Driver version 8.15.10.2219 to support the Intel GPU in HP notebooks with

switchable graphics. The AMD graphics card in newer HP Pavilion dv6 and dv7 Series models may not

    run certain Open GL software.

Update: There is a BIOS update in the works that will allow you to switch from the default Dynamic mode to Fixed mode. Switching to Fixed Mode will allow you to run Open GL programs on the AMD Radeon graphics processor. We will let you know as soon as this is available.

    Thanks!

First off, I have one of the original 6000 series, but I was able to set up custom resolutions (1024 x 576 and 1280 x 720) using the Intel HD control panel (Advanced Mode). These resolutions are now also available to the 6770m. Hope this helps

It seems to me, other than the 1080p option, the 6000 series is better than the 6100 series. The 6100 can't manually switch graphics and have difficulties in custom resolutions.

The 6100, is also able to do it but only on the Intel and done as Jerohm has mentioned.

It seems that CCC does not have it available to change, but resolution stays while the 6770m is in use. As I just tried it, played a game and it worked in the 1280 x 720 resolution.

There must be a single table that both adapters look at, so once its in the table you are all set. Instead of using CCC, use control panel and type 'resolution' into the search box. Display->"Adjust Screen Resoution"->"Advanced Settings"->"List all modes" and you can manually set it to any "table entry". You can center or expand to fill screen. There is probably a more direct way, but this works... (on my computer anyway)

I am considering upgrading my 6gb of RAM to 8gb. I do not really know a whole lot about this so can someone suggest a good brand to go with or maybe even a certain memory stick? All I need is a 4gb stick and would like to keep it under $50. Thanks

The old rule of thumb was to use matched sticks to take advantage of Dual channel access... so one choice, is opening your unit and buy the same type as the 4G already installed. HOWEVER, the Sandy Bridge memory controller is suppose to compensate for differences. So if you are upgrading from 6 -> 8 just to optimize for dual channel access, it might not be worth it... (especially if money is an issue) and you are staying under your 6G limit anyway.

I've had this laptop for a few days now and here are my first impressions

    DV6tqe
-Its gets ing hot. When I first played SC2 on this, the CPU temps got up to 90c on the lowest settings. With vsync, coolsense on coolest, coolermaster u2, now it plays at around 73c which is fine.
-Webcam sucks. They claim 720p, 24 or 30fps.
    -1080p screen is nice
-At first I didn't like the keyboard, then I got used to it.

Does anyone know how to make the webcam function better. My friend has a dv6tse and his webcam is so much clearer and not grainy and yellow looking. I updated the software but that didn't work.

I don't get the temperature problems. I have been playing Crysis and I don't use A/C, I leave my windows open, and it's a 90 degree day outside, and my CPU temps are around 75 C at load and no more than 80 C. My GPU temps are like 10 degrees lower.

    It sounds to me that

    a) there are defective models that need to be fixed.
    b) too much dust in the vents
    c) or as I suspect, user error. do you use your computer on a flat table? do you put it in the open where air can circulate and heat can dissipate? do you have anything obstructing the vents?

agreed... CPU-Z reports Samsung in mine, but I purchased 8G from the get go. Just pop off the access panel and remove/inspect your modules. Most likely they are going to be Samsung or Micron. You are probably safe looking on ebay, once you know what you are looking for. And if they are NOT matched, you probably will never know the difference (but "I" would try to acquire a matched set ;0).

On the heat topic, I have a dvt7qe and my temps run more on the order of 'jaguare', but I am not a game player. I think mid-80s is about the highest I have seen. I have gotten the fans running like the unit wants to 'take-off' however. So even though they may call these 'laptop' computers, they are certainly NOT... nor 'bedtop' nor 'rugtop'

Grainy generally means wherever you are sitting is too dark, so the camera needs to "increase the gain" so to speak (increase the ISO if you are familiar with camera-speak; higher ISO = better in low light = introduces graininess). Try sitting somewhere brighter.

Yellow looking means you are probably sitting somewhere with an artificial light source, and the webcam/software is not properly adjusting the white balance. A software package like Skype probably has a setting for that.

I am not sure that is ALWAYS true. I think they use whatever is available at the moment (memory is a commodity ... like OJ :D ). That is why ordering from HP is NO GUARANTEE that you are going to get the brand that you currently have installed. Memory sizes are only available in powers of 2, so with 6G, you have 1-4G and 1-2G, which violates the whole dual channel requirement anyway... UNLESS the Intel Memory controller DOES compensate for the differences.

Wow...first I have heard Micron. Guess they use what they can get the best deal on. Those would be the three main OEM brands...

Micron is ooooooooooooooooooold. They are one of the industry's early DRAM manufacturers from back in the 1970s. Micron Technology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I didn't know they still made consumer modules branded as Micron though; thought they just supplied chips to everyone else. Nice to see them still around.

Sorry, you misunderstood what I wrote. I used to purchase memory directly from Micron years ago. I was just not aware that HP used Micron...

Hey guys, I've had my dv6t-6100 for a month now, specs:

    i7-2630QM 2.0GHz - 1GB HD 6770M - 6GB RAM - 1366x768 screen - Win7 Ultimate x64

As to the memory, I can confirm that my 4GB stick is Hynix (aka Hyundai) but my 2GB stick is made by a company called Nanya (sounds like Nyan Cat, I know, but trust me, doesn't resemble a pop tart). This is how it came.

I'm having two issues (per se) with my dv6t. The first is that the fan is always LOUD. You can easily hear over it with the volume at 50%. This sound occurs from 2 minutes from cold boot, hibernation, and sleep. I've disabled Turbo Boost with ThrottleStop, and that has helped, my avg temps before were 80C idle, now it's about 60C idle. We bought two identical dv6t's at the same time, and the other one is dead silent. At any given time, I'm only running Chrome and Rainmeter. Nothing too intensive for the i7.

The second issue is battery life. With Wi-Fi browsing at 7 stops of brightness, I get about two hours with battery. That's normal, I've had that with previous laptops, but after two weeks of owning it, life decreased to 1 hour, then a no charge. I did two full discharge recharge, and always connect at 20% (it's an iPhone thing). I got HP to send me a replacement battery free, but the battery is only lasting an hour. Again, the other laptop purchased at the same time easily gets 3 hours on a charge, only web browsing with full brightness. My father and I have assumed by now that because of the overheating, the constant fan use is draining the battery. His work D630 from years ago (Dell Latitude) still gets 2 hours on a charge with a standard battery (not some big oversized one).

If anyone can help, thanks in advance!

Micron is the manufacturer of Crucial and one of the most reputable manufacturer of memory other than Samsung... FWIW, my DV7T also came with 2 - 4gb sticks of Micron as well.
