EDIT - A simple (well not very simple) google search showed the following:
Max Single Core - 2.9
Max Dual Core - 2.7
Max Quad Core - 2.6
Perfect, no problems here. I love my computer!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Intel i7-2630qm that I have is rated to go from 2.0-2.9 on Intel's website and HP, etc. However, the most I have ever seen it go in the TurboBoost 2.0 Monitor is 2.7, usually always 2.6, now I wanted to know if the utility is accurate, and also that is it possible to for me to reach 2.9? Anyone reach that mark without external OC'ing?
If you can help, Personal Message me please as this forums fills so fast the reply might get buried before I get to it.
And TurboBoost 2.0 makes all cores go faster, not just two, or one. Does that mean that maybe 2.6 or 2.7 is maximum for all cores and if i just use two or one core I can get 2.9 on that?
-
If not, then it is possible that your thermal paste isn't correctly applied or some other issue causing heating and thus battery life drain... -
Windows tends to spread things across multiple cores, which is why you usually only get the 2.6GHz boost max.
I have managed to get mine to hit 2.9Ghz, but you need to get Windows to try and use as few cores as possible in order for it to happen.
If anyone's interested, I can share the way to do this. It involves editing a few registry numbers, and then some extra stuff appears in the advanced settings for power profiles.
EDIT: Found a guide for it on here, saves me typing it up
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/494232-how-adjust-core-parking-inside-windows-7-a.html
In order to make it useful, a few other values need to be altered though, otherwise it won't actually do anything because its set only to disable seperate physical CPUs, not individual cores. Basically, the attribute called "Ensure at least one processor remain unparked per core." will need to be disabled.
After that, Core Parking can disable physical cores as well as logical ones. I was able to use this to get 1 core running at 2.9Ghz. Seeing as all background tasks had to run on that core as well in order for it to reach 2.9Ghz (if another core ran the tasks it'd only go up to 2.8), it was actually SLOWER and consumed more power.
So yes, they can hit 2.9Ghz, but its more of a marketing thing than a useful feature. You'll probably never see anything higher than the dual core clock under most circumstances.
That said, Core Parking was handy for one thing - Power saving. By turning off Turbo Boost and setting core parking to use only 2 cores, I was able to increase battery life. -
-
I would back up important data and consider returning it for the same model. Just saves a lot of headache, usually.

I talked to customer service today. They said opengl is now working. Is that correct?

The only way I can see it reducing temps in a significant way would be if you set it to park all but one core, but if you did that, you may as well retru nthe laptop for a single core one, since thats what it'd be. -
The laptop does support openGL, but only on the intel chip, that is probably what the rep was referring to. Oh, and by the way, you missed one of your last names.
-

-
yeah, the update isn't out. We're not looking for a graphics driver update, we're looking for a BIOS update.
-
-
lmao your last name is in your username anyway haha
-
Is there anyway to turn off the stupid HP logo light on the cover of the laptop?
I think it might be connected to the LCD power cable, but I'm not certain. -
Nope, not via software at this point.
-
-
Does anyone else have this annoying "deee dooo deee dooo..." sound when the laptop is plugged in and charging is complete (with lid closed in standby mode)? It goes to the rhythm of the flashing power light on the right side of the laptop...
-
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong thread, but I just bought one of these today:

And I can switch between my Intel Graphics and dedicated 6770m without a problem? -

Today after placing my dv6t close to my desktop monitor I noticed a little pinkish tint/hue on the dv6t's screen. Anyone else with the 1366 x 768 model noticed that too?
I Just want to know whether i should ask for a replacement or not. -
try degaussing your monitor, or adjusting your color. If none of those work you better call customer care...
-
Or because you are within the warranty period you could ask for a replacement!
-
Not every screen has the exact same color temperature. How do you know that it's not your desktop monitor that's too blue?
I doubt a replacement would do anything because HP uses the same screen, but you can adjust the colors in the Intel graphics options. -
Here's a photo that kinda shows the little tint. Bad quality picture but the tint is still noticeable:

Do you think that i should still ask for a replacement? It's not annoying or anything, I just want to make sure screen isn't defective.
Pretty confusing since it's hard to know what's the "right" color now.. -
Hey guys, I just bought a DV6T, figured it'd use the 30% coupon after customizing it to exactly 999$ :] (which is now possible after HP having switch the specs around a bit) and I was just wondering what the difference was between the select edition and the regular DV6T models. I bought the non-select edition and was curious to see if there is something mine wont have that the select edition would. Here are my specs:
dark umber
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
2nd generation Intel(R) Dual Core(TM) i5-2410M (2.3 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
2GB Radeon(TM) HD 6770M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Dual Core Processors
6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
No Additional Office Software
No additional security software
6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 5.5 hours of battery life +++
15.6" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366x768)

HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN with Wireless Display Support

I got it for 699$, good buy? -
Nope the select has nothing extra and yes its a great buy.

$1290 shipped. I was going to skip the 2720QM upgrade but I'm keeping this one for 1 1/2 - 2 years, I think. I'll leave it stock this year and then upgrade it to 12-16GB 1600 MHz RAM + SSD next year to give it a new feel. Figured that CPU upgrade will keep me feeling good next year.
I got a fully loaded XPS 15z earlier for $1200 shipped (going back now), and it's slick as hell for a PC laptop. Liked it but with the pending BIOS update I'll take the power now and get a Macbook Pro in two years when they'll hopefully have Macbook Air like 15"-17" Pros. I hope.... -

Guys, is it a better option to run the minimal install using the recovery media OR simply uninstalling the unwanted bloatware manually?
-
oh and i'd rather get a aftermarket card later. -
It doesn't really matter in the end - I uninstalled the bloatware manually because then it's easier to go program by program to see what you actually do want to keep - such as Coolsense or Simplepass
-
-
I think if you go the uninstall way, I would suggest using Revo Unisntaller, it's free and will cleanup anything that is left from the uninstallation. So stuff does not stay on your computer.

-
Did anyone else just get a bios update through the hp support thing? I wonder if this fixes the OpenGL issue
-
Just as a general tip for everyone:
Force intel HD 3000 graphics at nearly all times other than games. It can handle 1080p videos, Blu-Ray, and HD flash videos (i.e Yotube) with ease.
The benefit in this is that the laptop runs super cool during video load. I forced the flash player process (plugin_container.exe) to the integrated graphics and noticed an immediate difference in heat output. -
-
-
Has the Open GL issue been fixed yet?
-
I checked for updates just now and there isnt anything listed. I used the hp assistance program any other way or am i fully updated? lol
-
I can't decide if I should order one or not knowing that. I also can't decide whether to go with the 2630QM or 2720QM. It's $100 more but it seems like it's relatively faster with Turbo Boost. Also can't decide which battery to get. 9-cell seems like the best idea but I don't like that it's oversized. The "high capacity" 6-cell seems like a rip off. Any suggestions? I'm set on these things:
1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics
8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
15.6" diagonal Full HD HP Anti-glare LED Display (1920 x 1080)
Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
very good deal after the 30% off. -
