KoreanEvoke, to fix beeping/static noises, turn off power management in Beats control panel.

Aymu.ali, your hard drive is probably failing. Run the HDD test in HP Diagnostics.

I just ran the hardware test, the results say 'OK'.. I also ran the disk fragmenter, everything went smoothly... I also ran a quick scan using Norton of C drive... 30 threats were spotted and fixed by Norton... So is there anything else I could do to learn what's wrong...
Is 5 hours of battery life on very basic usage fine? My previous dv7 6XXX used to get significantly higher battery life... My battery and the area around it at the bottom gets quite warm even on basic load.. right now I just have wifi on along with firefox, and its warm with warm air coming out from the vents... My previous dv7 used to remain cold on basic load...
I also ran the battery test, and it's all OK... Should I just demand for a battery replacement? My laptop is still under the 21-day time

    Thanks

Aymu.ali -- it sounds like your system has been infected badly, if the quick scan shows 30 threats. you might want to go into safe mode and run a full scan, reboot, and scan again until you get a clean scan. also make sure your Norton virus definitions are up to date.

Since your system is so new, consider restoring from the factory restore partition to bring things back to "new out of box" status. With a badly infected system, Norton might not get everything.

I wouldn't get concerned yet about battery life or the vent's air temp until you are certain that you have a clean install.

    Do you know if it'll be good to upgrade the 2GB memory stick to the G.SKILL 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333
As the memory sticks installed are from Hyundai.

    Thank you.

Okay, I just ran the full system scan on safe mode.. 29 security risks were found and resolved... the risks are detailed as 'tracking cookies' and the risk level is stated as 'low'...
So am I good now? or I need to do something else?

hmmm -- well tracking cookies themselves are rather benign in terms of infecting your system and compromising system integrety. the most they will do is cause a bunch of net traffic to sites that collect traffic statistics, i.e. doubleclick.net. So the bad news is that correcting this won't affect the slowness and freezing. btw you can configure IE to not accept those cookies, but thats another discussion -- I'd recommend ccleaner to help there. But the task at hand now is to get your laptop working right.

I'd say the next step is to test and see if you still get the freezing. if it's still there, consider doing a full system recovery just in case Norton hasn't removed all the evil :D

probably so, but you need to confirm with the after market mfg to see if they support their sticks in your notebook, and what the correct part number is. That way, if you have problems you know who to turn to.

Okay, so I spoke to an HP tech rep just now... He guided me to update the BIOS to the latest version- F.14.... He asked me to run a full scan using Malwarebytes... I'm gonna do that
I have ran a full system scan using Norton thrice, and the results are-
    1st time - 30 threats , all tracking cookies
2nd time - 29 threats, all tracking cookies
3rd time - 23 threats, all tracking cookies

I'm now getting kinda concerned... :(

Okay, if I consider doing the system recovery, I will need to back up all my stuff prior to that... So which do you think is the cheapest and most efficient way of backing up stuff -
    external hdd
norton ghost (I dont know how that works, but its supposed to be a backup software)
Simply transfer all my stuff to my previous laptop, and then transfer it back to the restored laptop
    ...?

    Thanks in advance...

I have the same exact problem, every few days the system will completely lock up. The only thing I can do is hold the power button down until the system shuts off. It occurs at completely random times too, with nothing that I can find that links the instances. I have contacted HP 4 times on the issue.

The first time they told me to get rid of IE, the newset version causes all kinds of issues. OK, I use Firefox but I'll play the game. Didnt help. The second time they had me check the hard drives, I ran all the tests, no help. The third time they had me take the system back to factory settings, no help. The final time they told me to send it back in, but being that I had already been out of a computer for months waiting for my Sandy-Bridge recall exchange I am reluctant to just "send it back"

Now I have to call a case manager which I am really not looking forward to.

This all began 2 days after getting my laptop back before I had really done anything with the system.

Does anyone have any idea what we should do next?

Aymu.ali -- Mmalwarebytes is good. If it does not make an improvement, the approach to take here to return the laptop to its "as shipped" configuration, so as to remove all questions about what software you have installed, viruses, malware, etc., and then contact support. To be honest I would'nt worry about the tracking cookies right now because they are not causing the problem you are facing. you can change the security settings in IE if you want, however, (tools, internet options, privacy, sites) to block the tracking sities like doubleclick.net from learning your browsing behavior :D

If you test the laptop the way HP shipped it, and it still acts up, I'd send it back if you're within 21 days. in my opinion, its always best to make sure you have the time to fully test things out during this period, so that you can send it back if you uncover anything that you don't like.

Traberd -- your conversation with HP support should be around the fact that the laptop is not performing as advertized when used in the hp supplied configuration. In all conversations, make sure you remove as much uncertainty as possible so that the focus remains on the laptop's "as delivered" behavior, and not virus, aftermarket RAM, HDD, or some software. Unfortunately, you may have to send your laptop back and you'll be out a computer for a while but you have to utilize the system that is in place. But if you remain focused as above I think you'll be satisfied with the result. These things take time and are not always frustration free, but most of the time they work out well.

The frustration comes when HP has to prove out all the other possibile explantions first, before they authorize a return. So the more you have customized and moved away from the HP supplied configuration the longer/more arduous that process is going to be.

all the best to both of you!

kind depends on how much data you have. For a system restore my personal favorite is an external portable hard drive, where I can manually copy data files and folders that are important. The assumption I make when doing a restore is that all the apps will be re-installed and re-configured just as when the computer was new. the only "configurations" I save is the IE favorites. Here's what I save:

users/xxxx/Desktop [only if you have saved objects there]
    users/xxxx/favorites
    users/xxxx/my documents

and I created this new folder for misc data:

    users/xxxx/data

I just drop those folders onto the portable hard drive and then move them back after the restore.

but if you already have a more robust backup solution, or want to purchase one, then sure thats a good deal too. I don't have a recomendation because right now I'm using a rather old HP NAS solution over WiFi which is still working well but not available anymore. Honestly, for the future my brain keeps suggesting an online backup service because that puts a copy of my data somewhere else, in case my house burns down lol

BTW did the HP rep ever suggest a Windows restore point? ITs always a good idea to creat those automagically so that you have them to fall back on, before you do a full restore.

The small amount of white noise is inherent to most headphone jacks that are connected to the motherboard. To get rid of that, you need a dedicated sound card..which means in this case you need an external one.

Problem was already solved a page back. You just have to turn of the power saving settings.

The explanation I read somewhere is that when the sound chip is idle it would turn off and stop filtering out all the background mobo noise so preventing it from turning off would stop this.

Just received my dv6t quad edition today and it did ship with the F17 BIOS. I have not seen it available for download anywhere yet, but i was wondering if anybody knows if there is a changelog for it or what improvements were made. And yes, I'm aware it does not fix the manual switching.

yea its not posted yet on the ftp site I just checked and the latest version I could find is this one (F14)

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53216.html

If F17 is shipping, it won't be long before it will appear in the software/driver area of the DV6t support page

This happens to me, although it usually starts responding again in about a minute. I've checked the Event Log, and nothing appears in there upon the freezes. I haven't bothered to contact HP, but if it continues I will likely do so shortly before my warranty period is up.

I doubt its a virus or malware, I have a clean install of Win 7 Pro, and I run regular scans with Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot S&D. I'm not using the HDD it shipped with, switched to my Momentus XT, which has been in my old laptop for a year without issues.

Incidentally, the DPC latencies on this machine are AWFUL, it could be a badly behaved driver. I've already had the USB3 driver go into an endless loop and consume 100% CPU on one core while certain devices are plugged in.

Thanks a tonne...I'm very grateful for that help and guidance... I think I might go ahead and buy an external hdd, but not before I figure out if this laptop is worth keeping, if it performs well...
Can you please do me a favor? I need to know the battery life that other people are getting on their laptops...
So please install BatteryBar and let me know how many hours does it estimate as your full lifetime.... Mine says around 5 hours with lowest brightness and only wifi on along with firefox... please let me know how much does your battery yield with a similar usage and load as mine...
    Thanks again...

Try uninstalling the driver for and/or disabling the HP 3D Storage Protector(or whatever it's called, I don't remember). This might interfere with certain drives and isn't needed for pure SSD's(the hybrid XT isn't).

What tool are you using for measuring DPC latency....and what is "AWFUL". Can you do certain activities to increase latency? What are they? I don't see any problems with my dv6tqe 6100 series with respect to ISR or DPC latency.

Hi! I'm planning to purchase the dv6t in a few days after reading a lot of information about it. one thing i noticed when customizing the video card, there's no longer an option for the 1GB 6770M. Did you guys know why HP removed this option? Are they going to bring it back soon? If not, is the 6490M a decent card to purchase?

Take the 6770M. The 6490M is far less powerful. The 1GB 6770M is still available with the DV6t select and quad editions, just not the regular DV6t, but the regular DV6t with 2GB is actually cheaper than the select edition with 1GB.

Also, make sure you get the 1920x1080 display. That's the most important upgrade because it makes more of a difference than anything.

The normal dv6t hasn't had a 1gb option for over a month now (ever since I looked at the models). The dv6tse I believe has the option. It's just HP marketing. That outrageous force to 2gb makes a dv6t more expensive than a dv7t with the same specs. (Except the dv7t has the 1gb option, saving the 75 bucks, offsetting the 50 dollar starting difference).

Hello all. I just received my dv7 Quad last night. This morning I installed an Intel 250Gb SSD, had it all loaded and working great, then the SSD bricked! Windows froze, and when I rebooted, it said "Cannot find OS". Trying the SSD in another PC as a USB device indicated that it did not even exist - so, returning that.

ANYWAY, I put the original 500Gb C: drive back in the laptop, booted it up and set it up to check out the PC. It seems to be quite nice. I love the display, although I'm really not sure of the switchable graphics, but I'll read up on that.

My question to you all is this. When I set up the SSD, I loaded Windows from a Windows 7 Pro CD, then installed drivers I downloaded from the HP website until I had a clean Device Manager. Everything seemed OK, and I really didn't have a lot of time to check it all out before the SSD bricked, but by doing it that way, would I be missing out on any features of this laptop?

Would the switchable graphics still work? The HP fingerprint reader (I did load the driver for that).

Is there anything I should be aware of when the replacement SSD arrives and I have to start all over?

    THANKS!!!!

Well, I have been playing with my laptop for a few days now, and I noticed a wierd thing with flash player. When I am in fullscreen mode, the image is offset to the left about 1cm. The alignment of the buttons is not offset, but the picture is. So when I want to hit a button on a youtube video, I have to put the mouse about 1cm to the right of where I see the button. I have attached a screenshot of a youtube video in fulllscreen. I know you can't see it, but the mouse pointer is in the middle of the black area to the right of the exit fullscreen button.

EDIT: some more details: This happens with IE and Chrome, I haven't tried anything else. It also happens with Cnet videos.

I'm using Thesycon DPC Latency checker ( DPC Latency Checker)
I was getting regular latency spikes of ~1,500us every few seconds, and the odd spike of 8,000us or greater.

After writing that post I updated the USB3 driver and changed some power management settings, and now the DPC latency is sitting at 100us - the latency checker says its hit a max of 2,500us, but its not doing it constantly anymore :)

Haven't had it lock up since the update either, but it only locks up once every couple of days, so I could be being optimistic.
Thanks for mentioning the HP 3D Storage Protector - I'll get rid of it, and see if it helps. I don't use my dv7 on the go, so I can do without the data protection sensor.

Hopefully it was the badly coded USB3 drivers - I notice the new ones also don't cause a thread to loop endlessly eating CPU time whenever I plug in my cellphone.

The same thing is happening to me on my new laptop. You have to have the mouse to the right of things you want to select. It took me a while to get the hang of it. However, it's not in every application. In IE9, it's fine.

You guys know how the dv7 has the option of having dual hard drives? If you choose an option with one hard drive, does that mean you have an empty bay in case you want to put a ssd or something?

Guys, the random freezing problem in my new dv7 continues... I have spoken to HP tech reps 4-5 times... they made me run many diagnostic tests to know where the problem is.. nothing was ever detected... Now they want me to run a system restore to the original factory condition, which they think should solve all issues... For that I'll have to buy an external hdd to backup all my stuff (over 100gigs)... I spoke to a resolution dep. rep, she told me to exchange the laptop for a new one, for which I will need to backup everything first.... Is there a cheaper way to backup stuff, other than the external hdd...?
And will the system restore really help? OR it's just a waste of time... I dont want to run out of the 21-days time to return it...
I'm freaking confused... Please suggest something people...
    Thanks

aymu it definitely sounds like a hard drive problem

do u happen to have a solid state drive in one of the hard drive bays? if so, it might need a firmware update.

if not, try a system restore and see if the problem persists. if it does, then its almost certainly hard drive failure. In which case you should send it back to be repaired or exchanged.

I would suggest to do a minimal system restore. Just back up your data first since it does format the hard drive. It will get rid of all the bloatware and you will still have hp support assistant.

or search HP support assistant and download it from the hp site, or alternatively find your laptop in the hp driver site and download whatever you want

dv6t can't seem to run Dirt 3 in fullscreen mode.

Game starts in windowed mode, and when i press alt+Enter to make it go fullscreen it either returns to windowed mode or laptop freezes and nothing but holding the power button to turn it off works. Right now I'm using catalyst 11.7 driver, but I tried to revert to the stock HP driver and that didn't fix it.

Intel graphics 3000 works fine though. Anyone with similar issue?

What graphics card are you using for these apps? I use Firefox and have it and plugin-container.exe set to use the Intel graphics. I don't have the offset issue with this configuration.
