Have you tried turning off power management in the beats control panel or whatnot? I think i remember reading a post somewhere.

I was hoping someone answer you that actually had a dv6t, but I have a dv7t and no problems here. I used 16ohm earbuds and 50ohm over the ear headphones. I was amazed how well this laptop can play music though 50ohm (non amp) head phones. My ipod needed an external amp to play the full soundstage across these headphones.

Yep. I did that, with three different versions of the IDT driver.
And that did remove another problem I had at first, small sharp beeps when the power saving feature started/ended, but other than that it didn't help.

Well, I hope dv6t's and dv7's are similar then, because that would mean that this is something wrong with my laptop only.

But also interesting with your 50ohm phones, as I feel like my dv6t almost had a problem driving my brothers 40 Ohm headphones (which obviously didn't have the hiss problem), but then again, they are old and worn, and he has stated that they have som issues.

I forth this! HP does sell a 6205 for their business computers that can be ordered. Is it known for sure that the an Intel 6205 purchased from HP is not on the whitelist?

That should be the case, but again, as a dv6t owner and not a dv7t owner, I cannot confirm it. Perhaps a dv7t owner can shed some light, most of the posters in this thread seem to be dv6t owners.

I would expect power management to spin any drive down according to your power saving settings, when not in use. I'm assuming there isn't anything accessing it. I have two 7200 rpm drives in my DV7T-60xx, no obvious issues here.

I have the 8.830.6.2000 version drivers for both Intel and AMD... I mean, the driver details state the same version numbers for both.... Isn't that weird?
I tried updating the Intel drivers by downloading and installing the latest from the HP website (which is of a different version number), however, it says that my system doesn't meet the minimum requirements for that driver....

Gauys, I'm about to buy a new antivirus software for my dv7, which has a 2-month trail of Norton Internet Security already, but I have noticed a slowdown in my system due to it (boot times, shutdown times, daily functioning)
So, I'm looking for a light-weight antivirus which doesn't slow my computer down by a lot, also giving solid security... I was considering Avast and Kaspersky as an alternative to Norton... There is also a highly praised Avast Free version available.... There are no accurate recommendations on the web, as users recommend their experienced ones....
Please recommend the best one out there...
    Thanks

I rarely encounter viruses, spyware, etc, but when I do, I like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, it seems to catch everything. If you upgrade (Malwarebytes is free itself) you can get the scheduled scans like other programs. Another program I used to use was Spy Sweeper, but I prefer Malwarebytes to it.

Malwarebytes is great. I use it along with an AV.

As for Microsoft Security Essentials, it's on my family desktop, and it has let my desktop become overrun by malware. Of course that's not to say that it is bad, but when my family has used other AV (OneCare when it was around and AVG) the computer was clean as a whistle. IMO, there are better free AV's to choose from, such as avast and AVG coupled with Malwarebytes to keep your system clean.

So would Avast Free be a good option?
Avast Free Antivirus - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Can I have a combination of both, Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast Free to protect my PC...? Is that a good idea?
BTW, I'm very prone to viruses and malware because I'm a chain user of bittorrent sites and P2P networks....
Also, as a subscriber of Comcast internet, I have free access to Norton 360... But is that any better than the combo of MSI and Avast?

Well. Usually you shouldn't have two AV-programs running at the same time. At least not if both are "active" (as there could be problems with clashes between the programs).

Check out AV-Comparatives for some tests if you want to know what is "best".

That's right.... I plan on having one full-time security suite and malwarebytes as a supplementary tool...However I'm super confused between Norton, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast and Kaspersky... I researched the web to know which one is the best... I really couldn't find one that prevailed in all reviews.... Every review has a different view... Some say Norton has the highest detection rate, but it gives too many false-positives and slows down the system... Some say that Avast has a very light impact on your system... CNET says MSE will slow down the system and give high boot times and is not very effective... Some simply say Kaspersky is the best....
There is no solid recommendation whatsoever.... I think I'm gonna use some free AV like Avast until all the AVs get the 2012 updates and then probably buy the one that gets the best reviews...

I am using Eset NOD32 from many years. So far never had a Virus on my PC.
It seems light to me even on my 4 years old laptop.

P.S. In fact I have never got a virus on my PC - 15 years already.

On varioius PCs (real and virtual), I'm running the free versions of AVG, Avira, Avast, and MS Security Essentials. Currently, I prefer Avast, Avira, AVG, MS in that order, but that has changed over time as new versions are issued. (For a while I wouldn't recommend AVG because earlier versions had a negative impact on performance.) It's nag pop-up isn't too annoying since it is a "slide-out" of the main program screen. It can be blocked, but will reset after some definition updates.

I find MS the least user-friendly when trying to manage its settings -- probably ok if you're the type to install it and forget it. Of course, there are no nag screens or pop-ups. I like Avira a lot, but it tends to have false positives periodically. It's nag screen can be blocked. I've always liked Avast and chose it for my new dv7. However, I find the new "Sandbox" it provides to be too annoying and have disabled it. Just recently, an Avast nag pop-up began appearing in the same way that updates notices pop out of the system tray. It's not too bad. I haven't tried to block it yet.

One note: Keep in mind that Windows 7 has Windows Defender (which is also part of MS Security Essentials) built in. If you choose an AV-program that also has anti-spyware built in (and includes real-time scanning), you may want to turn off the real-time scanning in Defender and just have it run scans periodically.

I've been using Free Avast for years. No problem here. But again, I don't download anything from an unknown site or open unknown email attachments or links. I like it because it takes up little resources while running in the background and it updates its definitions daily.

I used Avast free edition for many years, for me it is no. 1 AV with frequent update and great protection (my system exposed to various threats because I use it in my work which include connecting many infected storage devices "CD, DVD, and flash ram, SD memory" and till now zero infection).
I tried many other free AV like AVG, MES, Avira and Avast is way ahead of them.

That's like standing at the North Pole and asking which way is south.

Avast is a good choice but never depend on an AV to save you. Look at AV-Comparatives like soilheart suggested. Which AV is close to 100% effective? The highest was G-Data at 61% for "new malware" detection. So that's the best right? Go for speed and low resource usage balanced with reasonable detection rates, they are all free to try.

Keeping Windows and all of your programs up to date has a larger impact on security than choice of AV. Assuming the person isn't dumb as a rock and falls for social engineering garbage like "Antivirus 2011"

In terms of performance and power requiring pc games is the 6770 in the dv7 QE more than adequate?

Compared the 6850 that is in the Envy 17 I believe?

And also, does the left palm rest get hot?

Yes it's more than adequate. Should be able to play the majority of games at medium/high at a good resolution. The 6850 on the Envy would give you a high and some ultra.

The quad versions tend to be hit or miss with this problem. Some are grills on the left palm rest, and some just get warm. I'm sure it's just a horrible thermal paste job. (besides the dumb design with them both under 1 fan and heatsink...)

    Considering grabbing a i7 2620M / 6770M 1GB GDDR5 / 1080p dv6 but I have a couple of quick questions...

    A) With the high-capacity 6-cell battery on a dual-core dv6, how's the battery life?

    B) What's the quality like on the 1080p display?

    C) What kind of discounts can be had on these machines?

For my dv6t quad, my CPU sensors reaches 85C on normal load, it's a bit hot if you're using it on your lap, but definitely within the "okay" temperatures for the CPU.

And if I'm playing Call of Duty, Portal 2, Battlefield, etc, I have to put my glasses cleaning cloth under my left palm, because not only does it become a frying pan, when it gets hot, your body oils stick to the surface really easily.

    A. On a quad core dv6t, I get around 2-3 hours on the standard 6-cell (now that fixed switching is enabled) so you'll probably get 4 or 5 hours (the rating) for the high capacity 6-cell, but I don't think that the small jump in capacity is worth the cost.

    B. I can't comment on this because I have the 1366x768 display, but the standard screen is the best display I've seen on a laptop, so I'd expect the 1080p screen to be really nice.

    C. You can usually find coupon codes on deal sites like Logicbuy and Slickdeals, some are fixed amounts ($XX off) and some are percentage off (XX% off). My friend, who just bought his own dv6t, used the code NBR5818 to take off 30%.

Still on the fence though. This laptop would be absolutely PERFECT for me... except that I cannot stand the 10-key / off-centered trackpad look that the dv6 adopted with the Sandy Bridge refresh. Hate it hate it hate it!

I used nbr5818 as well, but it has expired now. But if you keep watching another one might appear. These things come and go all the time.

Now I'm officially joining the Dv7t-quad club. yay! For a little north of a grand I got

    2630 i7
    8GB RAM
1080p display that is the same as used in the std Envy 17 (thanks all for your verification here)
    1GB 6770
2x7200rpm 750GB drives, configured separately (no raid)
    high-capacity 6-cell battery

yea for a few bucks one can get about 15 more minutes out of that one, lol.

I will be anxious to fire her up , get the bloatware off, build recovery disks, and then put in an SSD, lol :D

...and calibrate that display with a spyder 3 :D

Let me know how your ssd insert goes. I think you need a kit from HP to get it in, but I'm not sure.

There are two hard drive bays. One is where your default one is, and one is empty for whatever you want.

I think the kit has the cables and whatnot that you don't get if you don't order a second hard drive installed, like stealth said.

And I'd like to know about the ssd as well. There was a thread before, but I'm not sure where it went.

As someone else said, its hit or miss. I've had my DV7T for almost a week now (see sig for specs) . On idle or just surfing the net, its 40-45c. Under full load over couple hours, it gets 65-70c. The palm rest never feels hot or even warm. Under the laptop it gets warm in full load.

This laptop is for audio recording. In order to go SSD, i'd need a 2.5" drive with greater than 500GB and a minimum of 50K Read/Write IOPS. I was thinking of the Crucial M4 but, waiting a little longer to see what else comes out.

Guys, will the recovery media that I have made for my current dv7 work for its replacement with the exact configurations? (I had to exchange it as it freezes randomly and I predict a hard drive failure possibility in the future)
Also, can someone please tell me the name of the firefox plugin for better touchpad controls.. I had heard of it somewhere but can't recall it somehow... there was also some software to enhance the functions of the touchpad in general use...

Oh, may I ask you what kind of headphones you have then? If you have some better in-ear headphones maybe do you hear a hiss from your headphone jack? (Or possibly even with other phones).

I haven't used the jacks from the laptop yet. I connect a RME Babyface SE to the laptop for audio recording. Headphones wise I use AKG 701s. When i get home from work i can connect a couple other headphones to the laptop and i'll let you know if i hear any kind of hiss.

I ordered dual drives for these reasons:

    1. cables and caddys and brackets are all there for both bays, so I don't need to purchase anything, i.e. the SSD becomes a drop in replacement for the primary HDD, as the secondary drive will be untouched. In the DV7, dual HDDs are separate (not in RAID 0), so the transition is natural.

    2. it forces hp to support dual drives in the laptop "as shipped", and I can prove that both bays work with conventional drives before I attempt the SSD insert.

    3. After putting in the SSD I will have an extra 7200 rpm 750GB drive. If needed, I can always put the extra 7200 back in the primary position to restore things back to "as shipped" status, to advantage discussions with support or to ship the unit back. The dual drive configuration remains formally supported by HP.

the recovery disk you made will work, if the replacement laptop is configured the same. Thats assuming you have confidence in the OS build represented by your revcovery disk :D nice work; thats the way to do it.

Smart thinking. I probably would have ordered dual hard drives if I had known about needing the kit. I'll have to pick up that kit AND a ssd then when the time comes.
