Does it give a revision number. On some machines the bios needed to be updated before it would recognize 2 vs 3 but would show revision 9 which indicated the new chipset.

Luckyguy can you also check out the device manager and see what shows up there under system devices for the chipset? It better not be Intel 6 Series / C200 lol. If it is, go in to properties, select in the dropdown Hardwareids, see if it says REV04 somewhere

Checking out notebookcheck and comparing the 3dmark11 result to other GPUs I would guess that the 6770 needs to move up the chart a bit, into the class 1 section between the 6850 and 445 (closer to the 6850).

Pushing warm air out is fine, thats it doing its job. :) Glad it hardly warmed up, I wonder how the palm rests would feel if you ran 3dmark a few times in a row. :)

    First I've seen 3dMark 2011.
I was a little upset that it was half the score of a 470M, then I looked HERE and saw what a 470M is. (it's a bit below a 4870M Crossfire pair)

Well, I think we need more bench results... this is just on 3dmark 11. For example on 3dmark vantage the 6850 goes 6245 while the 555m only does 5983... so notebookcheck is doing some type of ranking based on multiple bench results. We don't have a bench on the 6770 in 3dmark vantage but i would bet its close to the 555.

Just talked to HP Rep...not that we should believe...but:

"HP has redesigned everything with the new umber model so this (B2) should not be an issue"

So basically, I take it they are using some third-party controller...

I doubt they are using a third party controller... the problem with the B2 chipset is that the resistors can't take the level of power designed to run through them so they degrade over time. I read this can be compensated for by reducing the power being sent through the SATA ports with a resulting decrease in performance.

Combine that with the fact that notebooks have a limited number of SATA devices and some of those are lower speed or infrequently used anyway I would bet they are slowing down the effected ports... and putting your main drives on the uneffected ports.

So 95% of users will never get a problem, and those that do or scream about it will get taken care of by support. Comes out cheaper for HP to deal with and probably partially accounts for the good discounts.

Here's the same CPU with a 6850M (why is his processor clock 2594 when Lucky's is 997?)

    Result

EDIT: Somebody else with an HP and 6GB tested his before Lucky and beat Lucky by 4 points:
    http://3dmark.com/3dm11/928669

    EDIT again. Here's a Dell with 2720QM, 555M, 6GB RAM, 3GB DDR3. Lucky's DV6 stomps on it.

Well, but if they get a class action against them...they will have to deal with ALL the affected machines, VERY expensive and bad for their reputation.

If they found a way to use the chips in a manner that won't result in failure then thats great for them. However, explicitly telling customers that they aren't using the faulty chips and then hoping we don't notice just screams lawsuit.

I can't imagine that HP would be that ignorant but stranger things have happened.

I doubt they will get a class action... it would have to prove harm, and theres only a chance the ports would fail to begin with, then if they are optimizing the use of the uneffected ports its more than likely that devices on effected ports are used in frequently and would likely never fail, and definitely won't fail if they are lowering the power to those ports.

I don't like it, but I can see why / how they are doing it and it probably won't effect things. Except of course it may effect me purchasing one of their notebooks... I'm still on the fence.

Better for HP unless sites like anandtech and engadget catches up on it. Which they probably will. As for me I'm canceling this order and won't be looking at another hp for a while. It's a joke that they're using recalled chipsets in newer laptops.

Did Luckyguy post any pics of the laptop itself yet? This could be an April fools joke lol...

Okay, so they use ports 0 and 1 (only 0 on the dv6) for the hard drives and the controller (likely port 6) for the ODD. That means that there's no issue.

Intel allows the faulty chipsets to be used so long as the affected ports aren't connected to anything. HP won't get any negative PR for this. In fact, Anandtech supports doing this.

I'm looking at the DV7 too and thats why im on the fense... the DV7 has more possible sata devices... which may require the effected ports if you used everything... so are they not using the chips on the dv7s or will they use the chips on a dv7 if you only order one drive, so your screwed later.

Actually a 3rd party controller would still show up as multiple SATA devices... perhaps their sharing the sata port between two devices.

On the port issue, once it was confirmed that ports 0 and 1 were unaffected and notebooks would not really every have a normal reason for using port 2+, I decided it didn't matter.

As far as worrying about shipping "rejects" and such, that's the chance you take with any of them. I remember years ago representing a client who was supplied fake cache. It showed cache in the bios, but was a dead chip. I wouldn't put it past anyone to do this, so no need to go targeting HP, alone.

I won't get bogged down over too much (a point here, a point there). Just give me a computer that is fast and works and will keep working, and I'm good.

Similarly, who buys a car thinking they really get the mileage they tell you on the sticker? Not me. I figure "ballpark" as advertised is good enough.

Cool beans, it looks like my DV7tqe shipped today as well. Gotta give a shout out to LuckyGuy for all the early info. Switchable Graphics :) The whole chipset thing is causing a little anxiety though. I'm one of those people who wants to add an SSD drive in the future, so I hope there won't be any questions about having two drives in the DV7. I know over in the Dell forums they are talking about the new XPS models shipping with boards that read B2 in cpu-z as well. I guess Dell is saying that the bios is giving cpu-z the wrong reading or something to that effect and that it is the B3 chipset. One thing is for sure, getting a straight answer out of HP tech or sales isn't going to happen. Most likely it will be here in this forum where the real answers come about.

Well, with the ESATA port its possible the dv6 can have 3 SATA devices and the DV7 can have 4. Its just that its unlikely more than two will be used.

Please correct me if I'm not understanding this right, but it seems like the B2 chipset mainly affect dv7t's with two harddrives; as any other configuration would just avoid the faulty SATA port

Crazy fast.. The score for the 6770m on the hp is higher than a 555m on the dell. The 555m is a supposedly faster graphic card than the 6770m.

    @Luckyguy:
For what it's worth, check with the driver updates for your model. There was something interesting in the update for the chipset.
"This package contains the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver for supported notebook models and operating systems. This utility enables the operating system to show the correct name for the installed Intel hardware in the Microsoft Windows Device Manager. "

Just curious if you get the driver and the name changes.

Edit: Make sure it's your exact model though before installing.

Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver HP Pavilion dv6t-6000 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Also I'm not sure (maybe I'm just too hopeful it's wrong for my dv7) but I read somewhere that the CPU-Z software was inaccurate, and that opening it up to physically look at the chip was the only way.
