Thanks, seemed to work. although now in CCC it doesn't even show what version of catalyst I have, but its definitely different, so I'm assuming it worked. Any numbers under information I should be looking for to confirm?
Edit: For example, what the Direct3d version number should be and all that. Thanks!

Also my mute button light seems to have gone out. Any suggestions? -
My old Dell toward it's 6th year started having an issue where I might here a monotonous "hiss" and one that would fluctuate with the activity of the computer. For example, Nothing playing > Same tone "hiss" > Open Program > Would hear it respond to either movement of harddrive or processor or some other process...
Most likely due to interference from nearby electrical components...
Does your Hiss change or respond in a way similar? And try messing with beats or turning Beats off. HP clearly says they isolate the audio components to avoid interference, so it's kind of ironic that you have this issue. -
Here's the link for anybody who is looking to do this in the future:
2nd HDD Cable kit for HP dv7t-6000, dv7-6000 series,dv7qte [HP-dv7t-6000] - $28.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks -
I did turn off the Beats settings and everything and I still noticed the problem.
I mean, if you guys are claiming that your laptops don't have this problem then that means I got a lemon and I need to exchange it. But the last time I thought I had a unique problem, the new laptop I got had the exact same problem.
Part of me is just thinking of returning this and getting a new laptop altogether. I got this computer for the screen mainly and I love the screen; it's the best I've ever seen. But I listen to music all the time, all day, especially classical music where because it's recorded live, sound quality isn't necessarily perfect, so I do all I can to perfect it. And being aware of this "static" sound in the background ruins it for me...
Also just the sound itself is different. My Toshiba and Mac play music identically. Songs sound exactly the same on the two computers with the same iTunes equalizer settings; no difference. However, on this HP, even with the equalizer settings the same, the sound is still "different". I'm no audio expert, so I can't exactly explain what the difference is, but I know the a song sounds the same on my Mac and Toshiba, I can tell no difference between the playback, but it sounds different on the HP. On a blind test I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between listening to music on the Mac or the Toshiba, but I'd be able to point out the HP right away.
Just not really sure what to do... -
Thought I'd share my experience with everyone so those who are unsure about HP might think twice.
I have had many, many computers in the past. And have been using them since before windows even existed. And I grew up with parents who worked for IBM. I'm no expert, but much more informed than most.
I never kept a computer (besides free IBM) other than Compaq/HP. Of course all manufacturers have some issues. But I find the HP issues to be much less than any other. I most recently bought a Dell Inspiron 17R. It was one of the worst laptops I've had. Then learned about NO software support! They could blame anything on software and deny repairs! I've also heard about them denying repairs if the issue is the same as previous repairs. HP on the other hand, replaced many components at least 3 times for the same issues in the past for me. I know it sounds bad, but they then offered to give me a new computer almost 2 years later even though warranty expired after 1yr.
Which brings me to my previous Envy 17-2100CTO. Can't beat free Envy 17 almost fully loaded! Sold it though since I am sooooo sick of AMD GPU's. Would've gone the G7 route but need high speed transfers from external drives, and I game on my desktop.
Yay! DV7 just shipped!!!!
Hope this helps you guys! -
Wow, quite the discussion here about this series of Laptops. Just read the last few pages to see what was being talked about.
I just got my dv7tqe Monday right on schedule. So far so good, I was impressed by the lack of bloatware installed. Got rid of that Norton stuff first off, it is more of a virus than some viruses themselves.
I picked up a Netgear Widi adapter from Best Buy last night. Works pretty good, was surprised at how easy setup it is.
Anyone have luck in finding a backlit keyboard for this?
Next up is getting an SSD installed, maybe after the first of the year, I have too many projects going at the moment.
Just FYI for anyone selected processors for their custom laptop. Don't be mislead by the first option not saying Quad. The specs on the first and second option are almost identical, but both are Quad core i7s. The second option is just a little newer model. I don't know if this was intentional on HP's part to try and get people to select the $150 option or not. But if it was shame on HP. The Intel part cost on both is the same, so its like giving $150 to HP for really nothing. -
-
Ya, even I was confused and had to dig deeper to see what the differences are. Imagine someone not so resourceful looking at the options, 2 say Quadcore and the first option just says Core. A lot of people may think they need to select the $150 option to get a true Quad core processor. A little misleading IMO.

My latest purchase through a CSR phone rep. didn't go as smoothly as I hoped. However, now I have a $100 discount and got 1080p for just under $700 total.
Gray (female) told me at time of purchase I would get an $80 credit at time of purchase. But never saw anything, and even confirmed while on phone with her. Called again and was assured it was there. Still did not have credit. Chatted online and they tried telling me credit will be applied when shipped. Started calling resolutions. Credit will be applied. Laptop shipped- No credit. Called resolutions again, finally a confirmation # for the credit, and $20 compensation for being lied to. And 5 out of 6 people I spoke to barely spoke english....
Anyhow, sorry for taking up so much space... Might want to keep an eye out for credit confirmation numbers. It appeared on my order as soon as it was granted. -
Hello! I'm new to this forum.
I treated myself to a new laptop on Thanksgiving weekend. My current one is definitely adequate as it was pretty much top of the line three years ago (ran $1600+ too). I could continue to use this one for a while longer as the only serious issue that required repair was a failed motherboard that wouldn't allow the battery to charge thus not allowing the computer to turn on.
Anyway, I decided that with all the good Black Friday sales I could treat myself to something new. I searched high and low for a good deal that wasn't on some piece of junk (like most of the sales were).
I found an HP dv6t on Costco's website for $699 (i7, 8GB RAM, 750 GB HD), but I waited too long to order and it went out of stock and the site said no additional quantities would be available. I was devastated.
Until I found my way to HP's site. I was able to build the same laptop (more or less) for a cheaper price!
I am eagerly awaiting HP to build/ship it. I have a good feeling about this computer. -
I am away from home but wondered if you guys knew what SATA is on the DV6T Quad 6100? Is it SATA II or III?
Thanks in advance -
I see this thread is alive an well so I have a quick question, I need to buy the second sata cable for my dv7t, what's the best option?
-
I downloaded a program called Speccy, it reported the SATA as being 2.
-
A company called Newmodeus has one. Just read the descriptions carefully as the DV7 has gone through several changes over its life. Its about 30 bucks.
-
I thought all sandy bridge chipsets came with SATA III support? If not that is very disappointing. Do you know what the chipset is for DV6 Quad 6100?
Thanks! -
-
Thanks!
Yeah I am looking to purchase a SSD today. Decent priced one at Frys with 500+ up and down. I would need SATA III to get maximum performance correct? -
Not many talking about the new LCD name. I am supposed to get this one and would love to see it. Can you please show a picture appropriate? Or anyone else with this LCD? It looks like they started shipping a new LCD as of October. I read the entire thread and just finished!
I thought I was ordering the Anti-glare screen... -
My order said the same thing and came with the anti glare screen. It is bright though.

-
Thank you all!

My order just got shipped. It's coming from shanghai.

There is a coupon code FB072808 for %5 off. Not a lot but better than nothing.
2nd HDD Cable kit for HP dv7t-6000, dv7-6000 series,dv7qte [HP-dv7t-6000] - $28.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks -
Apologies for the duplicate posting - just found this thread
Hi I purchased a new DV7t-6100 quad new from HP in October and immediately installed a new SSD.
It worked fine for just over one month before refusing to power up.
I returned it to HP and explained that I had installed a new SSD from day one but don't have to original drive to hand.
They are saying it'll cost $860 to repair as it's beyond economical repair and is not covered by warranty, presumably due to me fitting a replacement SSD. They are saying the motherboard and CPU are fried.
Surely this can't be right ?
Reading the small print in the warranty, it would appear an after market SSD would not affect warranty, nor do I beleive the SSD failing would cause such a major failure.
Has anyone else experienced this type of problem / failure and if so what action did you take ?
Thanks -
Why did u tell them you installed an SSD drive, that wasnt a smart move. -
If he sent it in they would have found out at some point. But I agree, the Ram, HDs, and and maybe wireless, that are user accessible, are replaceable items that shouldn't affect warranty.
-
I'm actually in about the same boat. I just ordered a cable for the 2nd HD today and went out and got a 60GB SSD. I'm itching to put it in and reinstall from scratch using the Drive one bay. I will hook the stock 750GB drive back up in drive bay 2 when I get the cable in a few days. I am considering not using the stock drive though and getting a new 750-1TB drive for the second bay and keeping the stock drive in safe keeping just in case they cry about the warranty. This way I can easily make it look like the HD was never touched.
-
I had little choice as the original system HD is in a shipping container on its way to the UK.
Plus according this warranty FAQ, installing an after market SSD should not have invalidated the warranty - especially as it was working great for a month or more.
HP warranty - frequently asked questions
As part of the debug process they asked me if I'd tried removing / swapping memory sticks around - which I had to no effect, so they don't seem to mind that. Plus I did it on an anti-static work bench, just in case.
We'll see what Monday holds when I talk with HP - I'm hoping they'll do the right thing, if not my Amex card has said they'll take care of it for me
Basically HP might get to keep the laptop (and my SSD) and Amex do a charge back as it's still within the 60 period that Amex allow for situations like this ! -
While it was working it was blindingly fast using the Corsair P3-128 SSD - a truly worthwhile enhancement. But a good idea to keep the original HD to hand just in case !
-
Does anyone have the i5-2430M in the regular dv6t SELECT Edition? Not the Quad Edition mind you.
I know its a dual core processor but I was just wondering in terms of performance and heating is it a going to be more than adequate processor for daily usage? Or would I be better off getting the next model up or even the dv6tqe laptop? -
I have the 2410M, and its very snappy, and completely adequete for gaming.
-
guys, can I use usb flash drive to make recovery discs?
-
Yep, a 16GB is close though since the usable space is usually right at 15GB. The first one I tried was 14.9GB and the program wouldn't use it as a recovery disk, this was a Corsair 16GB model. I took it back and had the store pop in a HP stick and it was barely enough but worked at 15.1GB.
-
16GB?! I'm just going to buy a DVD
-
Well you will need 4 DVDs. or 2 Double layer DVDs. For 20 bucks the 16GB USB drive seemed like the better option.
-

And if one gets lost/damaged then your'e screwed.
For storage in a laptop bag long term a little USB key works better.

I have two DV7T Quad Editions that have shipped and should be at my home in 3-4 days. One is mine the other is for my wife. I am looking for a guide on doing a clean install of Windows along with all of the other drivers...I have done this several times before on a dell laptop and hundreds of times on custom desktops, but I'm new to HP and am sure there are some subtle differences. I want to make a set of backup recovery disks just in case and then wipe the drive, format it and start fresh.
Thanks in advance! -
One other question: I ordered my DV7T QE with the 160 GB SSD and 500GB 7200 RPM secondary drive. Does anyone know which make and models HP is currently installing on these?
I'm assuming the SSD is Intel, I'm curious if it is the X25M or the model 310. Also curious which 7200 RPM hard drives the are using.
Thanks again! -
Not sure on the SSD, the HD is a ST9750420AS Seagate.
Look at the first page of this thread for some download links.
The recovery disks you make will have an option for a clean install with drivers. -
-
-
so is the dv7tqe good to buy, or will there be a product update soon i should wait for
-
Mine is good. I say go for it if they still have the 500 off coupon. If that has all ended it sounds like there is a model update right around the corner. The discounts probably wont be available on those though or if they are not quite as good. If you have to have the latest stuff then wait, but know there could be problems with new stuff that take a bit to get worked out. It all depends on how much they change.
It looks like the 500 off is done but there is a 33% off which is actually a little better. Code is NBK3573
