I don't think your gonna see much gain in the top processor option. You would be better off saving the money and adding a SSD in the future instead. Not the HP one. That is if you don't need the max processing power. I guess some do... I just don't think .2ghz is worth 300 bucks.

You should upgrade to the mid line Graphics at least.

Get the extra battery power. Not the 9 cell, just the high capacity 6 cell.

This is what I ended up with.

It looks like the HD supply problem is hitting them, no 7200 RPM drive options. Hmm.

tks for feedback, wasnt sure if going to top processing power would make a big difference, sounds like it wouldnt. i assume these have dual hard drive bays so that they can be upgraded w/SSD, etc.

Yep, just need a $28 cable, a drive, and some time to reinstall everything. I bought a SSD the other day and have the cable on the way. I ended up taking the SSD back because I couldn't restore to it after a couple tries. I didn't try everything like clean install from DVD though so I can't say the drive didn't work at all.

I decided to wait until after the first of the year on the SSD part, see what the next gen drives offer and maybe the prices will go down some.

Yes...look into the Crucial M4...exceptionally reliable. You can get good prices from Newegg on the 256 GB if that is the size you want. They charge a lot more for the Sanforce controlled drives...and frankly...still reading about a lot of BSOD issues with Sandforce (Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, Patriot and more). Crucial uses Marvel which is stable and about 5% slower...no biggie there. Of all the Sandforce controlled drives, Kingston seems to have the best stability...hope that helps.

When time to replace my Intel SSD...I am going to go with Crucial M4. Another excellent drive is the Intel 510 series...but they cost a lot more than any of the stated drives. Intel charges for the name...

    Only 5400 rpm drives available???

Anybody know the real reason why you can no longer order a brand new dv#t SE or QE with an ordinary size (500 or 750GB) 7200 rpm drive? Only 5400 rpms drives are available on the website anymore. That seems pretty retarded to me to strangle down a high performance machine with such a slow drive. I'm not sure it's related to the Thailand drive factory flood either, since all the other laptop brands are still offering 7200 rpm drives.

Is there possibly an overheating issue with these laptops, and perhaps HP is trying to offset it by only installing cooler-running slower drives anymore?

I also went with an M4 after a lot of research. They quality versus price and speed on these drives can't be beat. Intel is also very good, but man do you pay for it.

I don't know that the heat difference between the 7200RPM and the 5400RPM drive is much... especially not when compared to what is put out by the GPU when your pushing it. I've never understood why options like the HD speed seem to come and go with some manufacturers.

The 5400 drives is most likely supply related. Supply of platter based HDs is dwindling because of floods in Thailand. This is mostly going to get worse before it gets better. Some are predicting at some point SSDs are going to be the only mass storage devices available for a while. I think this is false though based on a report from Western Digital on StorageReview.com. They say their demand is 180 million units and they will be able to supply 120 million. This is more likely to cause a price spike instead of an outage.

Ya, most likely it is related, it just depends on each company's supply on hand. HP being the #1 laptop/pc producer makes it run through its supply faster than other companies.

If you need a new laptop with a 7200 drive you may have to order with a 5400 then swap it out with a store bought 7200. I have seen 750GB 7200 RPM drives on store shelves for around $130. You can take the 5400 drive and put it in a small enclosure for about 10 bucks. Or you can hock it for 75-100 bucks or so.

Not allowed to. The short story-- company is buying the laptop(s) and company policy forbids modifying them after purchase. Longer story with more details in my other posts on this forum website. Wanted the dv7t-quad edition with 1080p screen and 7200rpm drives, but no-go from HP, plus a company deadline to purchase by Dec 8th, so it looks like I'll have to get the current 2nd gen Envy 17 3D instead unless HP can get the new 3rd gen Envy models orderable on the website on Dec 7th like the rumours say they will.

That was my other thought, since the Pavillion line isn't really their top of the line laptops maybe they are saving their 7200 HD inventory for the Envy, Elite, and Pro book lines.

You probably shouldn't be looking at the Pavillion line for Business purposes, they are more for home use. Not entirely for home use, but more so than their Elitebook lines and up.

The Elitebooks with 17" screen and i7 quad core processors are starting around $4K price range... way out of my budget. I'm allowed to spend in the neighborhood of around $2K each for a pair of matching laptops. For around $2.1-2.2K each I can get the Envy 17 3D that has an i7 quad core cpu, 8GB ram, 1080p screen, decent graphics card, 750GB 7200rpm drive, Windows Ultimate 64 (need the Bitlocker encryption for confidential data that might be stored on the local disk), and a 4 year extended warranty.

If the Pavillion dv7t-qe would have the 7200 rpm drives, I could get the same equipment list for probably around $300-400 cheaper each one, and it would have plenty enough horsepower and graphics capability to do the job I need.

I'd like to start off saying that everyone here has helped a lot from the start of my search to the preparation and actual acquisition of my dv7tqe. After reading numerous threads here I was able to flawlessly configure my computer how I wanted. Everything works perfectly, but I am wondering if anyone has/had seen a thread with some program to improve the performance of the gestures of the trackpad. I have searched all over, but I can't manage to find the exact thread. Any help of course is appreciated.

Nope, I don't need 3D at all, but I do need 1080p for HD video and in the current version Envy 17, you have to pick the 3D screen to get 1080p... and that also gets you 120Hz refresh which is also desirable.

Ok, just installed the intel 320 ssd 160gb and reinstalled windows. The usb drives were tied up sharing data, so I followed directions from a couple of youtube videos that were apparently inspired by posts earlier in this thread:

    HP Pavilion DV7T 6XXX - Installing SSD (Part 1) - YouTube video 1
    HP Pavilion DV7T 6XXX - Installing SSD (Part 2) - YouTube video 2

The only scary part was that I didn't make any backups at all and deleted all the partitions on drive 1, and on my first attempt to install windows 7 on the ssd it wouldn't let me do it. After a reboot it worked fine and everything else was a breeze. I'm installing windows updates now.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, you can buy a cable for $34 shipped from newmodeus. Make sure that you get the cable before installing the ssd, or you won't be able to use the old hd. My biggest recommendation would be to just set up a backup of windows on an external drive, that probably saves a couple of hours of hassle. Of course, my external hd's are still swapping files, and I was too impatient to wait until tomorrow.

Hello everyone! I actually am a total newb when it comes to computers but I've been doing some research lately to get a little bit more informed, I had ordered the dv6t quad edition laptop about a week and a half ago but I didn't get the 1080p anti-glare screen and that was really killing me.

If I wanted to have a dual hard drive setup it meant I had to get rid of the optical drive and that was never an option so I called HP last night and had them start the process to cancel my order because I wanted to order the dv7t quad edition with the sandy bridge i7 quad core processor with turbo boost up tp 3.3Ghz, 2GB amd radeon 6770m, 1080P infinity view led screen and had them ship me the laptop with a dual drive 750gb setup (1.5Tb) setup so finished up the order and now am waiting for the ship date of 12/21/11, two business days shipping so it should be here by 12/23/11 just in time for xmas :).. I cannot wait to get my hands on this beast

In the future if I'm not happy I will definately only need to swap out the main hard drive, clone the drive to a SSD, and replace it with the SSD and use the secondary hard drive for storage only, so all in all I think I'm all set

Very happy at this time **edit : btw I ended up saving about $600 with the 33% coupon they have available YEAH BABY

Finally own DV7t. 1080p IS matte, and nice. Viewing angles could be better though. When I look at mine from below it has a hard time with dark colors. Also has very slight backlight bleed all along left and bottom edge. Only about 1/8" in width though. Pulled out of box to find LCD bezel comming apart near webcam!!!! Pushed back together, and noticed scuffs all around edge on bezel and it had some wavieness near speakers...

Other than that it seems perfect. Working on making bezel matte... can take apart without dissecting laptop.

My shipping took forever because sales rep didn't update address. Matte was talked about in this thread a while back. Just scratch all the gloss off. Used 400 sandpaper and 000 steel wool. Still need to polish and finish final layer. I'll try to get some pics.

On macs this triggers a sensor so the OS knows when the lid is closed. I assume this is the same on the DV7.

Prices/offerings change. You can order a recovery disc, just call HP. If you ordered a DV7 without a 2nd HD you have to buy the cable. Its about 30 bucks.

    Hi,

    I purchased a DV7 6157NR (Quick ship model). I got it for 921+taxes.

I also purchased the cable from newmodus, can someone confirm that the DV7 comes with the caddy and the cable is the only thing that is missing?

Was trying to customize, but the quickship was cheaper and more bang for the buck (except 7200rpm drive, but i am going to use a SSD for primary OS), am i missing something ?

Even though i am a newbie to the forum, i have been reading a lot for a long time.

    Thanks all

Mine has a caddy, but I guess there isn't a guarantee yours will have it. I think it will though.

I believe all dv7's come with the caddy, just not the cable. Have fun!

I missed mentioning that i bought a dv7 6163cl from costco, webcam stopped working in 2 days, hp wanted me to send the laptop for service. Costco took it back in a heartbeat, ordered the quickship from hp.

Any pointers on the 2GB 6770 included with the quickship model?

    I bought a AGility 3 120GB a month back.

It functions well, 450Mbps read and 505mb write speed.

I just installed my Intel 320 series 120GB SSD in my dv7t. It was fast before the install. Now, this thing is super-fast starting windows 7 and opening programs. There is no lag time from initial logon to ready for using programs. Everything opens instantaneously. I used to hibernate when I'm done so it would take a long time for startup. Now I can completely shut down and start up time is faster than my old hibernate time. I kept my 1TB for storage in my 2nd bay. I guess I will keep my original 640GB 7200rpm for emergency, just in case my SSD fails.

If I decide to upgrade to an ssd and use it as my primary drive.. how do I install windows 7 that came with the computer is it as easy as making a recovery disk from the original drive, swap in the ssd and log into BIOS so it reads the ssd and install windows.. could it be that simple?
