I just did a clone with the free software from Intel. About 10 minutes later, swap the drives and it's complete.

Where can I find this program and do you then put your ssd on the secondary bay, run the program to clone hdd to ssd, swap drives and its that easy?

I am having trouble opening and closing the HDD cover in the DV7t Quad 6XXX, They took away the screws and now use the battery release (opposite side) to release the hinges of hte back cover.

It is hard to put the thing back, it does not seal fully.

Can anyone put me in the right track

    Hp dv7t, dv7 6xxx series 2nd HDD / SSD installation - YouTube

The above video starts from the cover already removed and no mention on how to put the dang thing back on

I did, the edges to the right keep snapping out after a few hours of use, it is not staying in there.

This happened to me but was fixed after I took it off and put it back on later. The only tricky part for me was the part the closest to the battery. It does seem very flimsy and I'm not sure if those small plastic pieces can stand multiple 'snaps' in place. Maybe I just got lucky.

It is flimsy for sure. It was very tight when removed it, i was very careful not to break those tiny edges that snap into the body. Every day inthe morning i have to push atleast a couple of edges to put things back in place. Maybe i am missing something (While removing or putting it back)?

I assume when you said "right" side in your earlier post, you were referring to the side nearest the video/nic/sound connections. If so, it may be the same problem I had after removing my dv7t-6000 cover the first time. On that side of the cover toward the front there are two 'tiny' clips, one of which broke off only partially. (It doesn't extend very far to begin with.) Pushing the cover toward the front after seating it would make it hold for a while, but the edge would eventually pop out.

I did two things. First, I called HP support and explained the "defect". They sent me a new cover for no charge. Second, I removed the remainder of the broken clip from the original cover and, with a little superglue and some misc plastic, replaced it (allowing it to extend out slightly farther than the original). It works fine now, and I have a new spare in the drawer.

Yes! You are right on the position of the tight end. The edges were small at that end when compared to the other.

If i call HP and explain the same to them, would they void the warranty? OR I can just act dumb and say that it keeps popping out even without me opening it

There should be no issue concerning the warranty since the cover must be removed to reach "user servicable" parts (memory, hdd, etc).

I had my laptop for about 2-3 weeks when I called. I explained that the cover kept popping up on the one side and that when I took it all the way off, I could see the damaged clip. The rep did not question it. The only minor problem was getting the rep to understand that it wasn't necessary for me to send the entire laptop for repair. If I recall correctly, I ended up being transferred to a second rep (in tech support) who immediately realized that he could send just the part for replacement (and, happily, that I did not need to return the 'defective' one).

There was a slight issue of the exact "part" needed for replacement. The service manual indicated that it was part of a "Plastics Kit", but it turned out that it is the only part in that kit. For my dv7t-6000 the Products# was 'HPL-641305-001' and its Description was 'SPS-Plastics Kit'.

    Hope this helps.

    I finally received my dv7t.

I must say the first thing I noticed is how cheap the casing feels. The keyboard seems kind of cheap too.

I suppose I'll get used to it, though. I'm just a bit disappointed.

Thank you! That was a great help. Will note down the partnumber and use it during the conversation.

I have to say the tech specs of HP (For the price) is awesome, the build quality is great, except these kind of minor qwirks.

Unfortunately yes, the case is not of great quality, the older models came with 3/4 screws, which was ok, atlesat we would not break it that often, but the current design is toooo cheap.

On the other hand, Envy is built well, I bought one (another quickship, wish they have good turnaround time for customizable laptops, when you need one you need one :p ), I did not have any issues with the case, but a little more money. From HP's product line, they use pavilion DV7, as a launch pad for new tech for Envy, they did that with infinity display etc.,

Don't forget to buy the drive cable that I linked when you install the ssd. It was a snap to do it once I figured out that I didn't need to actually unscrew anything to get access to the hard drive bays. Keep your eyes peeled for ssd deals, they look to be in the $1/gb or better range on sale these days AR.

The stickied thread below this one talks about the switchable graphics. There is now a bios setting that allows you to force the AMD graphics to run all the time, just follow the directions.

I got the 6770m 1 gb, that gpu isn't strong enough to ever get any benefit out of more than 1gb memory.

It's not that it's no good, it's still an excellent card actually, it's just not worth paying the extra $50 for the 2gb over the 1gb card. What I meant was that in games/settings that are demanding enough to require more than 1gb of vram, the computer would look like a slideshow with either card, anyway.

The one situation where 2gb would be preferable over 1gb is running two displays (and you might even have to be pushing both). Otherwise, yeah, it's virtually unnoticeable in even the most stressed one display configurations.

No, if it was pushing enough data through 1, 2, or 15 displays, it would be a slideshow with either card. 8 fps >> 3 fps, but you're not gaming with either of them, right?

For comparison, a 6870 is a LOT faster than a 6770m, but it only has 1gb versions in the reference design. They eventually came out with a 2gb card 6870, but even that is typically overkill. The only conceivable scenario where the extra vram would come into play in an actual gaming scenario would be if you were using xfire. You can't replace or add to the 6770m in this laptop, hence no xfire and no need for the 2gb card over the 1gb card.

That SSD will definitely work. Are you replacing the HDD? If so, I think you won't need anything else (you can use the caddy and cable from the HDD). If you are replacing the optical drive with the SSD, then you will need this...

    2nd Drive Caddy - HP dv5, dv6, dv6t, dv6z (add 2nd HDD or SSD) [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

    i5-2430M
    1GB 6770M
    8GB DDR3
    15.6" 1080p

Its supposed to ship on 12/21 and was able to get Free 2 day shipping on the order, so hopefully I'll have it before Christmas!

Just got my dv6t Quad Edition today. Lovin it so far. I've been following this forum for a while now but I still have a few questions.

    - Is it better for me to uninstall the bloatware manually, or do a clean install of Windows?
    - If I do a clean install, do I do it from the recovery media or can I do it from a vanilla Windows Home Premium ISO that I find online?
    - Are there any HP utilities that are a must to have, eg. CoolSense?
    - Is there any post out there regarding first steps to take after getting this laptop?

    Thanks!

I didn't think there was that much in the way of bloat. I uninstalled the Norton virus but that is about it. Maybe a few other little things. A good tool to use is a program called PC Decrapifier. It's free.

Another option is to get another enclosure for the old HDD. The following would give you a USB 3.0 option...

    Hello forum~

I seem to have to some battery issues. My laptop suddenly is running out of battery faster than usual. So i checked the battery bay and the first 2 pins are raised higher than the other 2.

Is it like that with yours too? I have the HP - Dv6-6135dx

It has a poor viewing angle b/c it is a TN panel. They're all like that.

Reinstall windows using the hp software, then do a MSI when it gives you the option during reinstall. Basically an MSI installs all the drivers and none of the other crap. I was too impatient to wait for my external hard drives to finish their file transfers when I was installing the ssd in my dv7t, so I actually just used a win 7 disk instead. It was a real PITA, but it is possible. Check back a couple of pages and you can see the links that I posted.

No need to be rude. I keep having more issues with HP so never camplained about this. And Horizontal viewing angles are incredible! Just trying to ask some of the more helpful members if they have noticed anything similar with the AUO V5.

And don't bother responding to me. I ignored you forever.

It's a laptop, no real reason to view from a weird angle like a TV. If the view is bad just move the monitor... Compared to my old laptop the viewing angles are 10x better.

Some people on here don't know how to respond without being rude. It's like living in a overconfident, under-skilled IT department hell sometimes.

I haven't had any problems with vertical viewing angle. But I'm hardly ever looking at the screen out-of-angle. I'd check out some at the store the next time you're there.

Good call on that. I went with the same after doing a lot of research. The NewEgg rating of the M4's compared to the OCZ's speaks for itself too.

Yes, crucial m4 has an excellent reputation. Keep your eyes out for deals, however, because anybody other than OCZ looks like they're pretty good. I found a 120gb ssd on newegg last night for ~ $130 shipped for example. It was an off brand, but the reviews were excellent and there was no MIR to hassle with, either. Here's the link:

Newegg.com - SanDisk Ultra SDSSDH-120G-G25 2.5" 120GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

edit: it is SATA II, which probably explains the better deal. But the controllers for the dv6/7 are SATA II as well so you would get zero benefit from getting the newer drive. Plus, even if the brand new models start shipping with SATA III (doubtful since mine was purchased just 2 wks ago and it is SATA II), you would be unlikely to notice any difference whatsoever in the speed of the drive.

Thanks Appropriate! Didn't even think about stores since it's hard to find the 1080p. I need to make a stop at the electronics store now. I'll update my findings when I receive my replacement.

It seems like my LCD does not have typical vertical viewing angles. I think it would be very noticeable since I literally cannot move my head more than one inch up or down without the colors beginning to wash out.

And in case anyone is curious. I am being upgraded to 750GB 7200RPM HDD for free, since I have had so many issues. HP always takes excellent care of me. It's just a matter of getting someone competent enough to help.

Yes, that will work. As some of the above conversation has discussed, some of the more reliable brands of SSD's are Crucial (M4 series) and Intel, but a Corsair will work just fine if you're fine with it. You just need a cable from these guys (I think all new dv7t's come with the extra caddy in the extra bay):

    2nd HDD Cable kit for HP dv7t-6000, dv7-6000 series,dv7qte [HP-dv7t-6000] - $28.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
