Go back a couple of pages, I just did that last week. It was a bit of a challenge for me b/c I was too impatient, and there are a couple of ways to do it, but I am extremely happy that I did it.

Whoa, wait a minute, I think it was established a long time ago that the controllers for the DV6/7 are SATA III 6 GB/S when the early DV6 was taken apart by someone. I know that they're putting hard drives in there that can only do SATA II which is why the Intel controller is only reporting SATA II. Where's the data for this? And perhaps the i5's are running SATA II vs the i7's?

Yeah, I don't know what he's talking about. I bought my dv7t a couple of months ago, and it's SATA III.

Sounds like someone looking at what type of drive is in their machine versus what the controller is.

It was in this thread somewhere...

Serial ATA (SATA) 6 Gb/s and 3 Gb/s High-speed storage interface supporting up to 6 Gb/s transfer rate for improved data access. Provides up to 6 SATA ports at 3 Gb/s with up to 2 ports supporting 6 Gb/s transfer rates.
    From Intel: HM65
Some might have HM67, which is better.

    This 1368 screen is terrible.

It's possible to swap it for something better, right?

If you purchased from hp.com, you will have 21 days to return, from the moment you received the laptop. Get the matte 1080p if you can.

I have an Envy 17, which has 1 USB3.0 port, that port gives out power, if the laptop is hooked to the power (Even when it is turned off).

The DV7T Quad has 2 USB3.0 ports, but none of them give me power if they are powered off. THe speed is good, but no power when the machine is off, any ideas?

This is sometimes an option in the BIOS. If there is no option, and it dosen't work with all updates installed(BIOS, USB 3, Intel). It will probably never work.

I feel the DV7 is a much better laptop than my old Envy 17-2100. Just wish it supported RAID.

For those of you looking for a decently fast flash drive for your DV6, I started with this:

Patriot Rage USB 2.0 and was sufficiently happy with the speeds, but wanted to make use of the USB 3.0.

So I went with this: Supersonic 3.0 but in a 32 GB, and 3.0 really does scream.

Just some things to keep in mind is that in order to get 3.0 speeds, you have to have the drive formatted in NTFS, which Macs can't read. Formatting in Fat32 to make them Mac compatible slows the transfer rates to a crawl. 3.0 is so awesome for transferring large files like video.

I don't know if I trust them half the time. It is like Win7 can't keep up, it is bursting at like 100-200 is what it says, then hangs and shows about 70 mb/s. I don't know what to trust. All I know is that for me, transferring large video goes very fast, faster than I've seen on any machine.

Thanks for that! I am awaiting a 3.5" eSATA/USB 3.0 enclosure to replace my old one(USB2). That seems to be how my old laptop reacted as well, using eSATA. I think it's the 2.5" HDD limiting things. My 3.5" RAID transfers steadily at over 100mb/s.

I pulled the trigger today folks and picked up some 1600 mhz DDR3 1.5v paired at 8GB (2x4). CPUZ ID's them at the proper MHZ and the windows experience for Memory went from 7.6 to 7.8. Only $29 at the local Fry's.

I used to have 2 GB and 4 GB 1333.

I made my decision based on this great article Best DDR3 for Sandy Bridge

For the money, I'm glad I never opted for HPs own 8 GB package.

Nice! I have some Crucial 1333 on the way. I didn't even realize 1600 was so cheap! Thanks again! I did notice a rebate, and the CL 11 is not even on the Anandtech's list of tested memories. I'm not sure I can go faster than 1333 because of the Intel spec sheet for i3.

I got to go read that link now.

Anyone install an ssd in their machine? I recently installed an intel 320 160gb SSD and the performance is identical to what I experienced with the 5400 rpm toshiba drive. I don't know if I missed something but from all the reading I've done about SSD's I was expecting a noticeable difference, I feel like I paid nearly $300 for nothing.

Also is there anyway to search this thread, I haven't ever had the search function work for me.

The first thing i did after getting a DV7 is to install an SSD and did a clean install of windows 7 on the new SSD. I am using the 1TB toshiba as my data drive. You will see a drastic difference in how the machine boots and opens programs etc.,

Ensure that you have the intel driver 10.6 or above installed (Download from support.hp.com)

Go to device manager, you should see Intel mobile express chipset SATA AHCI controller, if not you might have to enable it in the registry

I got my dv7t last night FINALLY, I had the 120 gb ocz vertex 3 all ready to go, I installed it, updated the drivers and also installed Skyrim on it with my previous save files, and I LOVE this ssd, boot time is about 18 seconds, loading time from going in and out of towns and into skyrim is ridiculous its like you literally opened the door to get out of a town and tied your shoes and then the game is up ready for you to explore, it is simply jaw dropping, as for the dv7t itself, I am SOOO happy I got the 1080p screen I am running ultra settings on skyrim and I have no lag whatsoever.

I going to take a stab at this, so pardon my ignorance if I am missing something here, however, in looking at the specs for this SSD, the first thing I notice is that it is a SATA II component. Meaning, to me, that it functions along the 3.0Gb/s standard. Today's Pavilions, as far as I am aware, all come standard with controllers that are SATA III (6.0Gb/s) compliant. If this drive is put into a 6xxx series Pavilion, the notebook will default down to SATA II read/write speeds. Still fantastic compared to a traditional harddisk drive, but I just do not think it will compare to the 10-18sec boot times, and improved read/write speeds many see with SATA III SSD's in the same notebooks. Overall, IMO, this SSD would make a great storage device for a PS3, but I do not believe it will turn your HP into a super computer. But like I said, I am new to the whole SSD thing. I do not know much about all of it, but from the little I do know, this is the impression I get.

Did you install Intel Matrix Storage Manager?

Also make sure to do all this:

Before you do all the optimizations...make sure that the drive is aligned:

Fill in the data and if the end result is GREEN...then optimize and see if it helps...

Earlier this year, when I ordered my dv6, I do not recall ever having the option to order a Recovery Disk set. I was sent one anyway. Even with that said, you will still be able to create your own through HP's Recovery Manager application. You also have the option of using Windows Backup and Restore, which is a program included with the Enterprise, Professional/Businesss and Ultimate versions of the OS since Vista to create a system image of every partition you choose to include within. Lastly - even if you were not presented with an option to order or include a Recovery Disk set during the time of your original order, you can still do so at a later time. And no offense, man... but after spending $600.00USD or more for the notebook, IMO, I think the additional $19 for a lousy set of disks, which at some point, will come in handy, is a chipshot compared to the overall value of what you just invested in. If anything, having that disk set from HP, will help sell the laptop when you decide to upgrade.

when I ordered my dv6 a little over a week ago the option of the 7200rpm HDD was not available, now it is. I chatted with an agent who said I would have to return the laptop and order a new one if I wanted the upgrade.

Doubtful, they probably get put out as refurbs. That way if the product has a small blemish they can say it was a refurb. I would just slap in a new drive and keep the old one around as backup incase you have to get the laptop warrantied down the road. I imagine they have a whole pile of returns and probably a department that handles them separately.

So got my dv6tqe, installed the 16GB and Samsung SSD, did all the SSD optimizations and got a HDD benchmark of 500 read / 300 write (7.9 windows exp) :D

I guess I went overboard with the RAM, highest use so far is about 4GB so I decided to install a 8GB RAMDisk for temp files, downloads and internet cache. Any other suggestions? I could go to 12GB and sell one 8GB simm, or just go 8GB single dimm and sell the rest but keep the slot open for a future upgrade. What do you think?

Oh and also installed Skyrim and Arkham City :D

i just ordered and would be upset if they somehow upgrade the wifi. Seems doubtful though since they use centrino 1030 for the blutooth option. Is a sales rep where you got this info? From what I have read and experienced, they don't know much about the hardware. But there is a location in the LCD for another antenna....
