It's not glossy really as it does have a slight brushed texture to it. That being said if there are strong overhead lights you can see where you've touched it. Metal is just as bad as plastic at keeping fingerprints... metal actually might be worse since metal tends to be slightly more porous than plastic.
It wipes off cleanly with a light cleanser though so if you want to show it off you might want to spend a minute wiping it down.

I can't speak to what revision is actually in my laptop since I haven't physically inspected the chip. I do know that even if it IS the B2 revision and they undervolted port 5 which is what the optical drive uses... that my first few benchmarks I've run have shown that the optical read/write speeds are the same and in some instances faster than my dv6t-4000 that had the regular flawed B2 without any modifications to voltage. So even if they did undervolt there is no evidence that it has hurt performance of the optical drive at all.
Also of note... device manager and hardware ID tags aren't 100 percent reliable. My dv6-4000 has a 6570M GPU but in device manager and everything that queried it reported it as a 5730M GPU. It wasn't until I installed the catalyst ATI driver from the March 29th that it actually started reporting as the 6570M. So just because software and device manager reports the B2 chipset that is hardly reason to believe that it is. -
For whoever is brave enough to tear apart their computer and look at the chip, remember it won't say B2/B3, but rather the serial #. If it says SLJP4 it's B3.
One question though, the tracking info from fedex says its in alaska, in transit and package available for clearance on the same line. But that was two days ago (30th). My expected date was the 5th, although I was having false hopes it would arrive on east coast by today. Any experience with the shipping process that could shed light? -
Undervolting Ports 2-5 is the easiest/most cost effective fix in closed environments. It is most likely what is being done... just because it makes the most sense! And I agree, if employed, for an optical drive, there is no penalty.
You are also correct that the device manager reports the strings from the driver. Wrong driver, wrong strings.
Certain people are dismissing the B2 rev, EVEN if an acceptable solution/conditions exist whereby rendering it inconsequential... WHICH IS THEIR RIGHT ... I guess. I just hope to interject a bit of sanity to this chicken little mentality. -
a) thanks for the info
b) Yes, false hopes, forget Friday...
c) Over 08Mar - 11Mar, my last:
SHANGHAI CN ->
ANCHORAGE,AK ->
NEWARK,NJ ->
HARTFORD,CT-> out for delivery
Not this time ... my last status is ALSO ANCHORAGE,AK (Package available for clearance) -
Thanks. No more anxiety today lol!
-
Yup same here. I just got an email from HP saying that it is delayed in customs. Kind of sucks, but I have heard before that Fedex will overnight it once it gets out if they can still get it there on time.
-
My dv7 had a scheduled ship date for yesterday, March 31. I still have not had an update
-
My dv6tqe was scheduled being shipped by March 30th. Yesterday an email from HP, I was told it is delayed without new estimated shipping date. I called them this morning and talked to a manager. She promised that I will get a new estimated date today, also offered me a small token to show their appreciation for my business.
-
Ohhhh!! Small token, my imagination is racing...
-
OooOOooohhhh... whats the small token ?
-
So did I and I hope you're right about Fedex
-
Just got the customs delay email. Same delivery date. Thanks for all the info everyone.
-
Has anyone cracked one open yet to physically see what the chipset is? The world is waiting.....
-
Wonder if I should pray for HP, lol.
Naw, seriously though I hope with all my might they are telling us the truth.

I'm 99% sure this is the old B2 chipset, possibly with the PORT 5 SATA undervolted as Jerohm notes. How would all software report B2 (especially when this same software correctly reports B3 chips)? A bios "fix" could simply mask it if they were really shady. I might keep it anyway, I just don't know yet. As far as taking it apart to view the processor physically, from what i can glean of the service manual, this would require a rather complete disassembly. The unit is well-built, solid feeling, and I am hesitant to disassemble as i don't have the proper tools.
Here is the 3DMark11 score: Result
P1500 - is this good?
P1517 - after updating drivers -
It seems like if it really is the B2 chipset that the least HP could do is offer extended warranties so that if there are future problems that we would be covered?
-
I agree completely
-
Does anyone else find it odd that the dv7 comes with 2 year warranty, but the dv6 only comes with one year ? Why is there a difference ?
-
Update regarding faulty 6770M GPU on new dv6qe.
Returning the machine for an exchange after a long and painful ordeal to try fix it. Nothing worked, perhaps an isolated case. at least I will have time now to see earlier adopter reviews... -
They're treating the dv7 as more of a premium product.
-
If somebody dare take theirs apart....while you are under there, see if the motherboard is compatible with a backlit keyboard. See if there is somewhere near where the keyboard plugs in to power the backlight!
Maybe a future mod?
-
That's exactly what I'm hoping for. Plan on modding this baby with a backlit keyboard if I can. May end up finding a way to connect it to the trackpad light's button.
Also, I am 90% convinced that it IS the b3 chipset. But we'll find out for good soon enough. -
That is one major reason I'm gonna pop in and out of your thread...It is very interesting/important/etc.... There is so much riding on this.... and at the same time, I find it sad/funny that there can't be a 100% clear response from HP on this, although someone posted that HP claims they have stopped using the affected B2 set...

-
So does anyone know if there is a spare part backlit keyboard for the dv6 that has the numeric keypad like the new 6xxx series?
-
The two I saw Wednesday were P1557 (LuckyGuy on this forum) and P1561.
-
Cool thanks, any idea why my processor clock speed would be 798 and his 997?
-
Is it set to "Performance" Power Scheme?
-
ohhhhhhh snap, callllllllled out!
-
No it wasn't, but here are the PCMark scores when not in 'high performance mode": Result

3DMark11 also same again at 1516 -
Say someone is about to take their dv6t apart per the service manual, are the codes I'm looking for on the CPU, logic board, or like the north bridge/south bridge chips?
-
My build date was just moved from the 31st to the 8th. I called and they knocked off another 80$ ontop of me changing my coupon from 325 off to 30% off. Sucks I won't have my dv6 til then though.
-
(similiar ... NOT the exact chip you will find)
It won't be the CPU ... it IS the support chip set, so it will be a Intel Chip. One thing to consider, is that the CPU and GPU are attached to the heat sinks with thermal paste ... that needs to be replaced. Besides those, there are other thermal patches that have given me some second thoughts about too much dismantling... In ANY CASE do not continue unless you have a tube of thermal paste at your side. -
I have thermal paste. I've done a few MacBook and MacBook pro tear downs before, too. I'm at the point where I have the top case disassembled, so we'll see how far down the rabbit hole I dare go! About to start on the "system board" steps in the manual. I'm way too spoiled and used to ifixit guides!
-
you sound qualified... if I understood the service manual... I think the MB is mounted upside-down and you have to remove the fan assembly to remove the entire system board... TAKE pictures
luck -
Correct, CPU is facing down. On my iPad right now, otherwise I'd be uploading some pictures right now.
-
Good luck rip..
On a side note for those of us that were stuck in customs..
it looks like we are released .. resume normal shipping
-
Logic board is out! Should be smooth sailing from here.
-
Yeah, my order was stuck in Alaska waiting for clearance too. I wonder if it would be worth it to call HP and complain about all the delays. Looks like some people are getting a kickback if they make a little noise.
Can't wait to see the results of rips tear-down.:GEEK: -
Is this a dv6 or dv7?
-
Wow!!! You are actually doing it!
Thank you so much. I am reping you right now.
+1
P.S. I can't wait to see the result.

mucho rep bro

Dv6, these codes are almost impossible to read. So small! Codes are from top to bottom.
CPU:
SR02Y
V050A146
35042148A
0967
Chipset:
BD82HM65
SLJ4P
J107A858 -
By the way, if there are some other codes I should be looking for please speak up.
.
-
Good Luck Rip, and thanks for being the ginuea pig!
Much Appreciate the update, mine was released too! -
SLJ4P!!! That is the one we wanted, that is the B3 chip tmk. @Rip can you please confirm that your Device Manager/CPUid/HWInfo report B2? Thanks!
-
Thats what I wanted to see.. thanks for the confirmation.
-
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. Rep incoming.
-
According to wikipedia, SLJ4P is the B3 chip List of Intel chipsets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SLH9D is the recalled B2 Chip. As several of us have contended, the DV6t has the B3 revision, and windows is reporting it incorrectly due to the BIOS.
Thanks for the teardown rip ;-) -
Maybe after I put it back together?
