Ok pending confirmation (a pic would be great) that indeed this is true and that the software (cpu-z, hwinfo, device mgr etc) report incorrectly..
The machine is pretty sweet, really solid feeling build, i don't get any flex anywhere including keyboard. The screen hinge is tight and feels sturdy.
The sound is pretty good, indeed not much bass due to lack of sub but overall crisp and clear for a laptop (dv6tqe). I run hdmi to an onkyo receiver and from there to a 40" Philips 240hz and it is pretty awesome sound and picture.
The keys on keyboard are responsive and make only a small sound. The trackpad is pretty sweet, i turned off the two-finger scroll bcuz i am used to using the side scroll, works well, mouse pointer pretty fast could be a little faster for my taste.
The buttons on the trackpad are not silent, they make an audible click sound but it is not super-loud. Not silent though, I wish they still made silent buttons on touchpads like my gf's Dell E1505.
Back panel is easy to remove, contains easy access to the HDD, RAM, and wireless card.
Fingerprint reader is actually cool, way faster and more useful than the one on my previous cpu an MSI ex625.
Runs cool so far, heat vents nicely out of the left side.
The fan makes kind of an audible whine-ish sound when c/gpu is under load, but it is pretty quiet even when under load. When not under load it is silent.
The power cord is kind of annoying because it sticks out so far on the right side, they should offer a plug that angled/doesn't stick out so much imo.
If it is B3 I feel like I got a pretty good deal on a really solid feeling computer.
Pretty sweet deal at around $900 - i7 2630qm, 6GB 1333, 1GB switchable AMD Radeon 6770, 640GB 7200RPM HDD, Intel 1000 Wireless N +Bluetooth, DVD Superdrive.
Ok no use for the return shipping label (i hope, pending Ripwind's software chipset identification results)! -
Man, if this thing is brown it is only so in the right light. Looks practically black to me.
-
It'll be a few hours before I have it back together probably. To anyone taking theirs apart in the future: the logic board is seated in the base REALLY tight. Be careful.
-
...
nice job, thanks again -
Just in case anyone doubted...
Q-Tips, Rubbing Alcohol (Just in case, for thermal paste), credit card (cheap spudger), paper for tracking repair pages and screws, and a nice small screwdriver set (Cobalt).
And of course, my iPad with this thread up.

Does this mean that my laptop is out of customs? -
What if it's the B2 disguised as a B3?

The people that flipped out and sent theirs back right away are going to be pissed, lol.

After the initial delay and this one, it better get here ASAP. -
Everyone should put in their signature whether they got the dv6 or dv7 so we can relate to their posts! hahaha

Here is Device Manager / My Computer / DXDiag

By the way, the only reason I have this DV6t is because HP was unable to cancel my order once I put it in. I actually have a DV7t on the way - and this one is going back.
I don't think I'll be tearing the DV7t apart! -
@Ripwind - is there any chance you could please check the cpu-z info/the hardware id by using this method:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...6xxx-series-owners-lounge-85.html#post7316804
(just type "wmic idecontroller get deviceid" into command prompt) -

Was there no seal or warranty tag you voided when you took it apart?

Thank you ripwind! I think a lot of people have exhaled big tonight and are feeling a lot better. I know I am. Thanks again!
-
Thanks rip for taking the time to investigate the hardware.
I recieved my model today. It was certainly a surprise. Regardless, I am very pleased with it. Brushed aluminum finish is very nice - extremely dark like others have stated, effectively black. I was most concerned with this at the time of purchase, but I'm very pleased at this point - an elegant design and color in my opinion.
General performance has been great thus far. No intensive testing yet as I am going through the process of a clean install at the moment. Video playback is smooth. Audio output is excellent (except for bass) considering it's a notebook.
Trackpad is great. Dedicated buttons work effectively - the way it should have been on the previous revisions.
Keyboard buttons are good (minus no backlit) and layout is simple and intuitive. I can confirm that there is flex with the up / down / left / right keys, but it's nothing significant enough for me to sincerely complain about.
The display is what you would expect from a 1366x768 resolution screen. 1080p would have been preferred, but running games at this native resolution will allow for good performance into the future.
Anyways, my comments are just based on a couple of hours of use. I'll provide more feedback in the upcoming days, but I am very happy with this purchase considering the price. A lot of power in a relatively compact package for an excellent price. -

Thanks a lot Rip, glad I held onto mine until over the weekend i was hoping we would get some more data/someone would open 'er up, i will eat all my words about them shipping the B2, and say this is a heckuva laptop (so far

So all is good with the World...and HP's policy.

Thanks Rip, I think you spread some real happiness today -
Interesting note on switchable graphics:
I just plugged in my AC adapter, as I was running on battery for quite a while. As soon as I did a popup appeared that said "Switching the graphics processors cannot occur until your current applications are closed." -
Rip is an HP spy.
LOL

hi Ripwind
as others have mentioned, I'd be curious if you saw some form of power connector that might be able to be used for a backlit keyboard? Hope springs eternal. Tx for your teardown! -

I'd be willing to bet this has already been answered, but what kinda battery life are you guys getting with the 6-cell? How about the 9-cell?
Also, 7303 in 3DMark06!? I could have sworn I got OVER 9000p, but seriously) on my old dv7tqe with the i7-2630qm and the 5650. Has anyone tried overclocking?

Ok I just ordered another HP dv7tqe from hp site. I got the base model plus the 9-cell battery, HD 6770M, and Bluetooth. Came to $996 with tax.
I have until April 30th to return my dv7-4290us at Walmart. My build date is April 18th. So hopefully I will have this laptop in hand a few days before.
I really like that I now get USB 3 ports. Can't wait to use USB 3.0 thumb sticks to do a clean install. -
-
Is it true that you don't have to screw out the back to install the HDD?
-
Just wanted to add some more info after using dv7 for a couple days.
-Switching graphics cards is a breeze. Just right click. Also, if you unplug your computer, a prompt comes up asking if you would like to switch to intel graphics. I wasn't sure if I would be using the intel graphics much, but after using it the past couple days I can tell you that battery life with it is awesome with the 9 cell. I'll be doing a battery test with min brightness, wifi, and intel tomorrow. Also, the computer stays very cool with no audible fan noise ON MY BED. The old Defective dv7 would get very hot within minutes when I put it on the bed, and fan would get crazy loud. I'm very happy about this. Less heat with Intel Gfx should extend life of computer and amd card!
-The trackpad is much, much improved. Dragging and clicking is easy. There are many multigesture options too in the properties.
-The fingerprint reader has new Simplepass 2011 software. You can even assign certain fingers to open up a set of websites for that finger.
-Bluray player now comes with Cyber Link Power DVD 10 for out of the box playing
-3dMark06 was 11623 for me.
-Speakers under the screen sound great. No weird vibrations from keyboard when playing loud music.
-I posted this earlier, but the serial I have is in the NON B2 range given by Hp. Just like rip though, Rev_04 comes up in command test. I'm guessing it's for compatibility reasons.
-To me it looks like all you need for the second hard drive is the longer proprietary (I believe) SATA cable. It has a bracket/cover in the 2nd drive slot.
-No screws for the service cover on the back. Just remove battery, and then slide the battery latch to right to pop the cover. Then carefully remove the cover. The are a lot of plastic hooks going into the computer. I almost broke a couple of these, slightly bending them. I'm gunna have to use gorilla glue to reinforce them whenever I take the cover off next time to throw in a ssd.
-Screen not much of an improvement, if any. Still a small sweetspot with viewing angle. I'm fine with it though.
A couple of questions:
-How do you rep? I can't send any love to Rip.
-Anyone know how to disable the trackpad light?
There are some quick pics in post 970.
Peace -
so just one more time im sorry if i sound stupid just to make sure.this means all DV7's and DV6's have B3 RIGHT?
-
I have a dv6t qe coming in the mail and I noticed a lot of people commenting about doing a clean install on their computer, I was wondering what the benefits are of this as well as if it is easy enough to do without losing any beneficial applications. thanks

2. Some buyers have gotten in a snit because software tools say B2.
3. Rip pulled his apart, and it was just like HP said it would be. Software tools wrongly said his had B2, but it had the B3.
4. The only reason we ever had to doubt HP was #2 above, which Rip has proven is not indicative of anything.
