Some random observations about my new DV7:

-The 640gb 7200rpm drive is a Samsung hm640jj. Maybe someone can compare it with the 750gb 5400 to see if there is really an advantage. Is it true that the 750gb only has a 8mb buffer compared to the 640gb's 16mb?

-I noticed someone thought that they may have gotten a non Intel wireless card because they also got bluetooth. On my machine with the bluetooth option, it shows Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN, in device manager.

-The Simple Pass software doesn't work with Firefox 4 and apparently will not be updated.

-Not a big deal, but the camera software seems to be more limited then what came on the previous model DV7. No avatars or efx and so forth.

-The battery doesn't seem to fit as snug as the last model. I could be wrong. I didn't have the old one for that long.

-I love the TRON inspired trackpad lighting. :)

-This probably isn't an issue at all but... When you hang your hand over the edge while using the trackpad, it sort of puts pressure on where the top meets the lower chassis. I could see it maybe pulling apart along the seam over time.

On a side note, I wouldn't blame HP too much for the delays. If it's a supply problem then it's out of their hands. They are pretty liberal with their return policy (try returning a laptop to BestBuy) and they have been giving out good deals to compensate. I have my issues with how HP operates, but in this case I think they are trying to deal with the Sandy Bridge issue the best they can.

No idea, the dv7 has simpler options.

Your email confirmation from HP might have more product number details.

I have a question.. If anyone has done a clean install, did you recover the HP coolsense software? If so, is it in the SW folder on the root of c drive?

Any essential software/drivers missing for that matter.

I read someone earlier about it being gone once they installed fresh Win7.

    Thanks :D

I don't blame them for the lack of supply. I don't really even blame them for failing to forecast the demand. What upsets me is the lack of transparency and how they are handling it, especially combined with CSRs who can't tell you what is actually going on.

It's a liberal but poorly thought out exchange policy. You have to take delivery then return it. You also have to deal with their ridiculous CSRs trying to get you to keep the laptop. Real text from a chat convo:

I understand that you would like to have the dv7t Quad edition, and have the dv6t Quad return, but, if may I ask, would you mind keeping this amazing dv6t and give it to someone who is near to your heart? If that would be okay for you.

Also (maybe I got ripped off) but I don't think they refund 2 day shipping costs either.

Other consideration is if you plan to service your model under HP warranty and your model has aftermarket stuff like different hd, ram or wireless card ...etc.

Keep in mind, through rare but it does happen, that HP is not responsible if they get replaced with factory parts and the aftermarket parts get lost.

I'm just picky, and probably overly critical. There is just a very small sweet spot, angle wise, for it to look it's best.

Haha I've heard stories of people sending their laptops in to HP or Dell for a hardware fix (screen, wifi, etc) and getting their HDD wiped. Yeah don't trust the technicians with anything.

Another reason I love the onsite warranties. But if I was mailing my laptop in I would NOT ship it in with the hard drive.

Ah, I just got the delay email. My original ship date was April 5 and now it was delayed to April 13. HP gave me 15% coupon for future purchase but I called and got 10% credit which will not be credited to me until the laptop ships. I also got $25 back for 8GB upgrade that I missed, so all in all, if the laptop ships, I pretty much paid $877 tax included for the dv7 quad core, not bad.

I still can't believe this...HP needs to choose another company and get an update out there to fix this. Here's an E-mail people are receiving after contacting Digital Persona, the makers of the Fingerprint software:

Come on HP, fix this now!

Battery life is awesome... but I have not tested on gaming and hard-load state.

About 6 hours of websurfing, youtube, keyboard fighting over Balanced power option and still more than 15% left (I cannot remember exact percent but there was plenty.)

I cannot believe it, this is just six cell battery, and i7 equipped powerhouse!

I don't think $375 still exists. Perhaps they don't want to encourage mass sales until they work through their existing order backlog.

I received my dv6qe a few days ago and have been amazingly impressed so far...until NOW. I have installed XBMC and plan to hook the laptop up to my HDTV to use as an occasional media server. However, when I did this I discovered I could only get 2 channel pcm sound, not 5.1 dolby digital via passthrough. The files I was playing have been working as 5.1 via DLNA so I know the files are fine. Also, I played a Blu Ray via HDMI to the HDTV to see if maybe XBMC was the problem and again, no 5.1 sound. I wonder if it has something to do with a drive for 5.1 via HDMI not being up to date or something. Please help, what should I do?

Not sure if this would work, but you could try installing the ATI HDMI audio device driver from Realtek. The link is in the high definition audio codecs part of the download section on their site. Just make sure you create a system restore point before installing in case something goes haywire. Make sure you've switched to the ATI GPU before connecting the system to your TV/receiver.

Thanks, I have been reseaching that idea. So realtek provides the drivers for the hdmi output? i searched control panel, and found no reference to hdmi anywhere in the system. I have a very vague grasp of this stuff, so i'm just trying to gleam even a minimal understanding of this before i take the plunge and potentially screw up a brand new machine lol.

The GPU has a Realtek audio chip in it, which provides sound when connected via HDMI. This is separate from the IDT audio driver provided by HP. If you right-click on the computer icon and select properties, select device manager. Expand the sound listing, and there should be a listing that either shows "High Definition Audio Device" or "ATI HDMI Audio Device."

That's why you set up a system restore point before installing the drivers.

Ordered my dv7tqe on Sunday 4/3, just got an email coupon today for 20% off, which would have saved me $85. Got on the phone with HP, and in less than 5 minutes, they set up the credit on my account (to be applied back to my card once I get delivery). Way to go HP! Now I am getting this laptop for $977!

I have only played Civ 5 so far and I get frame rates of mid 50s during the cut scenes and 40s during gameplay(no lag at all), all on highest settings. I might get a first person shooter tonight to actually test it since there isnt much going on in Civ. And temps stayed in 50s.

fraps actually reduces the FPS by 5-10, it's better to use MSI afterburner. you can turn on the FPS graph in settings.

In recording mode, Fraps and the application certainly interact... in monitoring mode however, "I" could NOT state the Fraps affects FPS whatsoever... but use whatever tools you are most comfortable with.

Well, after talking to someone a few times today on the HP Customer Relations Team they've managed to convince me to keep the DV6t. I was offered an additional $82.50 off my initial order, which brought it down to $783.74 (after tax). I couldn't possibly say no.

Talking / emailing with them was by far the easiest communication I've had with HP in the past month between my two orders. I received multiple immediate phone calls after leaving them messages and received email responses within minutes.

If you're having issues with chatting online or on the phone with a sales rep, I would suggest asking to speak to someone in the HP Customer Relations Team or the "PCE Team".
