I'm brand new to the sight, but I just bought a DV6T with the i7-2630QM, 6770M, 8GB DDR3, 640GB 7200RPM, and Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth options. I got it for 850$ before tax. Estimated build date of April 28. Can't wait to write a review, and thanks to everyone who posted reviews. They were a big help.

I'm going to place my DV7 order tonight. Hopefully that 4/28 date is based on their conservative estimates on when they will get parts and it moves up as the month of April creeps along.

A note on my drive hardware kit that was 'shipped' on Tuesday.

According to Fedex, the status is "HP told us a package exists, but we haven't seen it yet".

I'd be happy if I got mine by April 20th.

I'd be surprised if I got mine before May 10th.

I'm with you on that! They quoted me a April 25th date which is absurd considering it's taking me over a month to get a laptop from them. But if I WAS to get it before that date I would be ecstatic!

But I'm not holding my breath... I just want it before my birthday, May 12th. They're not in anyway related (the buying of the laptop and my birthday) but it seems like a nice benchmark date lol. :D

I'm lucky since I can wait for my laptop, I just wanted something better than what I have for law school in August. Maybe I should have just waited, but I feel pretty confident that this machine will last me the next 3 years. I am also going to steal your sig, thanks in advance. :)

Yea, you are lucky. I've been getting by on my work computer, which is one sick Mac, I love it to death, I would put it in my purse and bring it home with me if I could. But since I do a lot of traveling and design for a living I'd love to be able to work overtime from home or while I'm on the road on a nice laptop! (And I wouldn't mind being able to take advantage of my RIFT subscription and actually play...) Haha, granted, NOT being able to really work from home gives me a sweet reason to just play Black Ops all night lmfao.

And you're welcome to bum the sig =) I've always been good at sharing! :D

If you open the HP Support Assistant program on your computer, you can check for the warranty status and it'll show it right on there.

Their process was the 2720, about $150 more, which is about the cost of your upgrades, but they got it for $700, not $800

I'm kinda kicking myself for not getting a SSD with these massive % off coupons/delay discounts. But I just won a fantasy basketball pot of around 300 bucks so maybe i can put that towards a 256gig SSD... or maybe waiting a year to upgrade once the prices come down some more... what do you guys think?

I can't stand the new simplepass fingerprint reading software. Gives annoying popups all the time. The old one was more subtle. Anyone else having these issues?
Like whenever I log out I get a popout asking me to swipe for a password and I have X out of this popup to continue. Obviously if I'm logging out of a website I do not want to swipe my finger...

I suggest getting a 120gb SSD for ~$170 and using a optical drive caddy for a storage HDD. 256gb ssds are waaaay overpriced unless you settle with old ssd tech.

Once you go SSD, you never want to go back.

If you got a dv7t, then heck yeah get an SSD. Intel just released their 3rd gen SSDs - 320 and 520 series. The 2nd gen X25 is still pretty solid too. I've also been hearing a lot about the Vertex

If you got the dv6t, be sure that 256gb will be enough for your storage needs (dv7t has 2 hard drive slots). If not, you could try a hybrid drive. Speed and price wise, the Hybrid drives sit between a traditional HDD and SSD

I found the cool sense software after a clean install. You have to install the HP support assistant (Which was on HP.com in the drivers, prob in the SW folder too) then click on troubleshoot>>Power, Thermal and Mechanical>>Thermal tab>>HP coolsense. Seems like alot of work, but I only wanted to change it once so that when the computer is moving or mobile it would be on the coolest setting.

Someone else just mentioned the idea of turning the DVD drive into another hard drive. I wasn't even aware this was an option, and as I almost never use my DVD drive, I'll most likely be doing this so that I can add an SSD to the computer. I found this.
2nd Drive Caddy for HP dv5, dv6 Series (add 2nd HDD or SSD) [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

Can anyone tell me if this is a good/bad one or if they are cheaper somewhere else?

Should I put the SSD in the DVD bay or where the HDD is already installed, for heat purposes or other advantages.

    Thanks for your help!!!

    1. If you have a dv7, just get the factory drive hardware kit and put both drives in the hard drive bays.

    2. if your SSD is SATA III, you will want it in the hard drive bay for best performance. The factory hard drive is SATA II, so it won't lose any performance if you put hook it up to the DVD SATA II port.

He must have a dv6 based on his link. And whoa I've never seen a caddy / dock like that before.

I would put the SSD in the normal HDD slot and move your original HDD to where the DVD is. No real factual reason for that, but it just seems more right.

So I'm gonna be getting a dv6 and am really interested in this dvd caddy... will that one work or has the fit changed with the 6000 series? Anyone have a link to an informative thread/site or have any useful info for this?

Nice. I haven't had time to call the parts department during the day yet. As long as it ships by the 11th it should be fine, since the laptop won't ship till then either.

    Email the website

    or

Compare the manual for the newest dv6t (link should be in original post) vs the manual for whatever dv6t the website part is for. Check the HP part numbers and see if they match.

ya i didnt' realize there was an option to put a hdd in the dvd slot with a kit. I have a dv6 and im coming off of having a tablet for the last year and barely ever used the dvd drive, I have an external anyways. I wanted dual hdd's but didn't want the dv7 size. I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone talk about these in any of the forums so far? I think its great! is 60gb enough or should I go 80?

and any opinions on Intel's x25-m vs a vertex 2 at about the same prices and as a boot drive?

How do you like the screen so far in term of color and contrast? I was at looking at the one in Costco (DV6-6xxxx) and did not like color. Can you adjust the color, contrast, ...etc?
