I'm currently chatting with a customer service droid to get them to credit me the price difference. It shouldn't take this long. Just look at the original order, see the prices, take 33% off the original price of the laptop, see that it comes out to about $38 less than what I paid last week, credit the difference.

Same. They claim that the coupon code is invalid though.

dv6tqe 33% - Reviews and Compare Prices shoudl be the first one right?

Im trying to claim a $46.65 credit xD

Not for me. I received a credit to bring the price of the system from about $900 down to $870.

Hi, this is my first post. Does anyone know how big of a performance difference there would be between the Select Edition and the Quad Edition?
    Dv6tse:
    i5 2410m
    HD 6770m
    6gb ram
    640gb 7200rpm HDD

    Dv6tqe
    i7 2630qm
    HD 6770m
    8gb ram
    640gb 7200rpm HDD

I would primarily use it for basic web and word processing, as well as some photo and video editing. I would not use this at all for gaming. What I'm wondering is if the extra $90-ish is worth it.

extra $90 is priceless worthy... stick with Quad Edition.

if the price difference was about $200, of course Select could be good choice but just $90?

Photo and video editing also pull much CPU power so quad is always better. Even Sandybridge quads are turn off unused cores by itself to reduce heat and power consumption so it is not comparable.

Hello all. Sorry to change the subject here, but I've been reading up on a few pages on this forum. I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy the dv6 or dv7. I was hoping to get some feedback from actual owners. The price of the dv6 Select Edition is pretty affordable after the 33% coupon. But the sort of low(ish) screen resolution has me wondering. Would it be beneficial to step up to the dv7 quad for the extra real estate. Although if I did that I am not sure if I would necessarily need a quad core processor.

(Just for reference: I have a 13" Macbook now, Core 2 duo 2.00ghz)

Only reason why I am asking is because I purchased a dv6z Select Edition a quite a few months back and returned it because of the screen which was pretty awful. I'm not sure if HP stepped up their quality with these new generation dv6s. So it would be great to hear from someone about the screen quality. I put a heavy value on screen quality. I don't need 1080p resolution but I want a screen that I will enjoy looking at.

So that's my dilemma. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Not if you don't plan to play games, no. It also depends on how intensive your editing will be. But you also might want to consider future proofing your machine with a better processor.

New dv6t screens are still awful, worst screen quality so far not just resolution but viewing angle, color hue and washed out, white vertical banding and more. It would be better for you to look forward to XPS 15 or Macbook Pro 15.

Best solution is external monitor like Dell U2311H while stationary at home, but I really do not like my dv6t screen.

Thanks for the feedback! I also returned it for the reasons you mentioned, the colors were extremely washed out and off.

Does the dv7 suffer from the same issues?

Part of the reason I've kept my MacBook for so long was because I couldn't find a laptop with a screen as good as it has. I guess I might just spend the money on another MacBook!

I'm not trying to start a "Mac vs. PC which is better debate". I just want to make sure what I am purchasing is something that I will like and will be happy with. I am well aware that Macs are expensive which is why I would really like to purchase one of the new HP Sandy Bridge laptops. The processor alone will be an extremely significant upgrade, and I won't be spending $2000 to get that technology like I would with Apple. I just don't want to be disappointed.

The dv7t has a 1600x900. I mean the screen, as people have said is nothing to complain about. I have no idea what that other guy is talking about up there, because i haven't heard any other complaints (except from him) about the screen. If that really matters, buy a monitor, and use the VGA or HDMI output.

This notebook is indeed more powerful than the 15inch Macbook Pro, and is thousands of dollars cheaper. I was considering the MBP but decided to go with this instead. Not regretting it at all.

Thanks for the replies. What I will be doing is mostly basic stuff, but occasionally I will be doing 3D rendering so as to insert 3D effects. I think the Quad Edition is probably the best bet currently for onlt $90 more. By the way, I was wondering about the differences between the HD 6490m and the HD 6770m graphics chips. I know for $25 it seems like a no-brainer, but I would like to know if there will be an observable difference.

Thanks! I think I might consider the dv7 Quad then. The extra screen space will be nice. I guess it just depends on who you talk to about the screen quality!

The MacBook Pro has pretty low-end graphics. I mean only a 256mb card in a $2200 laptop? Plus its a lower end Radeon model. I'm sure the graphics will be amazing in the HP with the 6770m. I could buy 2 dv7s for the price of the Mac and still have money left over! haha

Not to mention all the free upgrades with the DV7 and the coupon. Seems like a pretty great deal. I just might have to wait awhile to get one it seems from reading about other people's experiences!

It really is a no-brainer, whether you'll notice a difference in todays apps or not (it most likely will perform better in 3d rendering just based on the fact that it is basically twice the speed of the 6490). Either way it future proofs the machine and may provide some extra resale value. Opting to pass on the 6770 for only 25$ is foolish IMO.

Wait, so basically the dv6tqe 15 inch screen is crappier than the old dv4000 from 5 years back? Is that what you're telling me?

Man i might have to cancel if its true.

To put it simply, yes you will notice a large difference between the cards. The 6770M is clocked much so much faster than the 6490M, that it is in a different tier of mobile graphics processing when it comes to categorizing.

And to the person who said the Envy 17 is better, you obviously didn't read AutoArc's original post. Ignorance.

Ya I wanted to know the same thing, upgrading the screen shouldn't be a problem, of course its an inconvenience doing it ourselves, but I don't really care, and it sounds like an aftermarket backlit keyboard is right around the corner.

All in all, few small upgrades down the line, and I really think I'm going to love mine.

How does the screen on the DV7t compare to the two screens offered on the non-3d Envy??

Is the standard 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView Infinity LED Display (1600 x 900) on the Envy that much better than the screen on the DV7t?

Can anyone tell me what card the radeon 6670 is comparable to as far as gaming benchmarks, checked notebookcheck.net and it hasn't been reviewed yet. Also they have it in the fast middle class category but from some of the benchmarks I've read here it looks like it compares to some of the high end (class 1) cards they have listed.

Thank you. I made my order pronto as soon as I saw that coupon.

Final price $748.99 for HD6770M and i5-2520m (I don't need quad core). All in all, this is a great deal and can easily trump machines that are twice the price from less than one year. DV6t build date May 2nd.

Next, I will order the Intel 320 SSD 300GB. I can't believe it.. I will be a proud owner of Sandy Bridge + high-end GPU + 300GB Intel SSD for only $1300. My current MSI gaming laptop costs $1000 last year and isn't even comparable. Will also upgrade the screen to 1080p later on (once someon else has done it).

it's seems like we are left with 4 major problems with this laptop:

    1) Lack of back-lit keyboard
    2) Lack of hi-res screen
    3) Horrible fingerprint management software
    4) Lack of a dual-band card

(my personal order would be 3,4,1,2, but ^that seems like general consensus)

dual-band cards are easy to buy and easy to replace for those that care
I cannot believe no one makes a legitimate FP software tho... there must be someone!
back-lit keyboard seems possible from a 3rd party in the next few months
hi-res screen? do 3rd-party companies even make those for laptops, and is it even practical?

oh, i guess the delay is a major problem, but i don't think that counts (i already have mine anyway) :p

i've searched for days and can't find any (free) software... it's amazing to think that only HP would make such a software (and unfortunately HPs software only works on specific laptops)

I think its worthy to note that the major problem with the last generation:
HEAT - has been solved to some extent...

additionally, a backlit keyboard is cool and nice, but its not "necessary", is it?
im sure the envy or a later dv6/7 will have a backlit keyboard that we can swap!

agree with ur ordering... i think the backlit/screen "issues" is blown out of proportion...

I am getting ready to push the "order" button on my dv6tqe, but I have a couple of questions for which I cannot find an answer:

Does the Radeon 6770m have dedicated memory or is it shared?

Is it a separate "card" or it it integrated on the mother board?

Why would they charge your credit card the minute you place the order and not when the item is shipped? I know there is the bill me later option, but the count would also start at date of order, meaning it should be paid in full within 4.5 month of receipt.

Nice code!!!! I had wanted to reorder a 2720 instead of the 2630, but couldn't change my order and the sale was gone. Just reordered the dv6tqe with 8gb ram and the 2720 for like $40 more then the 2630 with 6gb!! I will send my first one back when I get it, have to wait an extra 2 weeks now which sucks.

The 6770M has 1GB DDR5 Dedicated Memory. It by default also uses 2GB shared memory.

What do you mean by separate card? It's dedicated graphics so it is an actual graphics card but it's physically soldered onto the motherboard (I'm assuming). No laptop will actually house a "card" per-se with a fan, case, and the works.

I'm guessing that they will charge your credit card when the laptop ships, as do many companies.

    ----Hope that helps!

Thanks. Makes sense to me. I got off chat a few minutes ago with someone who could not understand what I meant by Dedicated Memory.

I also asked her about when my credit card would be charged and she said the moment I place the order.

Yeah the CSRs know nothing about the technicality of the laptops themselves.

And that's shocking, since many companies wait till the product is actually done. I guess it makes sense that BML also starts its countdown at the time of order. I can assume you're extremely excited. I know i have been since March 31st *-*

If only they could make them faster... D:

6770 has dedicated memory of 1GB, not shared...
I don't think it is replaceable ie. like a desktop.

You place and order, and they give u an order #, at which point they will begin to process your payment, which should be paid/settled within 1-2 business days. It has no relationship with when your order is built or shipped.

They charge you before they build it because they "build it for u", its a "service", you are paying for, and not just a "product"
