Called HP and got $60 credit for the free 8GB RAM since I had to pay to upgrade when I placed the order for a dv7tqe at the end of March.

Gentlemen was very nice. Just be cordial with the rep, explain your case, and ACCEPT the survey afterwards. :D

Not sure I want a delay, but an extra 10% off would be nice also.

It will be worth the money because two sticks working at the same timing is a large increase from 1 stick.

My question is this: what is the RAM speed that comes with the comp? I'd like to replace the 2GB stick with a matching 4GB stick.

Only if you purchase the "exact" brand and timings of the 4GB stick that comes in your laptop. In which case you've already answered your original question. You want to buy the brand that ships in the laptop.

Yes, a different brand with same timings usually do work fine, but I've encountered memory with identical timings from different manufactures cause general protection faults in computers before. So unless you can find identical manufacture I would purchase 2 new 4GB sticks and sell the old sticks.

Alright, there has been a lot of squawking on the forums about the screen quality/resolution of the DV6tqe. After some relatively extensive use I have a few observations:

Yes, this screen does have a "Sweet spot" where it looks above average to great.

Yes, the 1366x768 resolution is a bit low - However, if this is your secondary computer (i.e. you have a desktop), or if you have an external monitor, or if you're not someone who is using production-level software like Adobe Photoshop or development tools, it doesn't much matter. Browsing the internet and gaming will be fine.

People seem to forget the days of passive and active TFT screens. Those were ugly screens. Today, this screen is average or a bit better. For the price you can get this hardware at (33% off?!) it's an insane steal.

If you're getting the laptop to game, you're doing yourself a favor by pairing the screen up with a 6770m and core i7. At this resolution you'll be future-proofing yourself instead of getting a DV7t and needing to run at a non-native resolution in the future (3-4+ years) - or decreasing quality.

The only way to tell would be to read the service manual. I think a previous poster knew where to find it, because he was able to pull up specs about the network card. The RAM should be listed in that manual, but why go through all the trouble?

    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Originally ordered 3/18; order was delayed, so i got on the horn with the CS reps to see if there was anything they could as far as free shipping or extra money off (i.e. the 15% off coupon they sent me apologizing for the delay). They were rude and couldn't do anything, so I cancelled.
Used the 33% off coupon posted here yesterday (NB8095) AND talked them into giving me the 15% as credit when the order ships (took me a couple hours to get a "yes" on this). Brought the order down to around $920 after taxes and free shipping -- including 8GB RAM (my original order only had 6).

I'm definitely interested in some after market upgrades (i.e. 6230 wireless card, hybrid HDD, backlit keyboard, better screen) but am new at this. The wireless card should be easy enough. Sounds like others want to do some manual upgrades as well. Hopefully you pros will share your wisdom with us!

Found an answer. Go to www.crucial.com They have a memory locator for specific computer models.

Crucial shows 204-pin SODIMM - DDR3 PC3-8500. It doesn't mean the HP ships with Crucial memory just that this module is compatible.

I would go with the crucial module since Crucial is really Micron which is a company that actually produces memory.

Make sure they are industry standard for DDR3:

    2Dimm, 1333Mhz, and of course, 4GB.

I'm not sure the brand really matters (I'd buy from Crucial, just to be safe) but otherwise, just shoot for the cheapest pair. Just as a warning: You only get what you pay for. It would be upsetting if you received a pair of damaged RAM from static exposure or something.

    No, PC3 8500 is clocked at 1066Mhz. 1333Mhz is PC3 10666.

If you were to buy the faster 1333 and HP is only using 1066, the memory will under clock to 1066.

And no you would not notice any real world difference in going from 1066 to 1333 if you were to buy 2 new pairs of 1333.

Don't even know if the HP BIOS would allow you to raise the clock rate if you tried since my HP has a build date of April 18th so haven't received mine yet.

No there won't be a big difference in gaming, because part of the work load is taken over by the GPU. You will only notice a difference if you're rendering stuff, and even then, the GPU will assist.

A very helpful representitive from HP just helped me with some savings de moneys and told me that you have 21 days from the date you receive your laptop for them to pricematch. That being said, if you get someone unwilling to help you, unfortunately your best option is probably just to call back.

Not an expert either, but the 10600 vs. the 8500 is the operating frequency and the CL is the CAS Latency.

So which is faster? Th PC3-10600 operates at a faster frequency but a slower latency. Two variables changing so I wouldn't know which would be faster. I am inclined to believe that the PC3-10600 would be faster, but I don't know for sure.

Ha! Thats not good. HP is using 2 memory modules from 2 different memory manufactures. Yes, the memory should work fine, but I always prefer to use memory from the same manufacture with the same timing to ensure system stability.

It does show that it is using memory modules PC3 10700 (I think that is a read error, I'm only aware of PC3 10600) and not PC3 8500 as shown on the Crucial website.

So Fizzix, I would wait till you receive your laptop before ordering any memory to verify the correct speed or you could play it safe and order one stick of Crucial 4GB PC3-10600 which is actually a little cheaper than PC3-8500. If HP is only using PC-8500 the PC-10600 would slow down to run at PC3-8500 as well. Newegg is out of stock of the single 4GB PC3 10600, but it does have 8GB (2 4G sticks) for $89 which is cheaper than the PC8500 modules.

I looked on the HP website for the DV6T manual, but did not know which DV6t model to look at. Some models used PC3 8500 and others had PC3 10600.
