Noob question. Is the Turbo Boost automatic? Is there a way to get it to at least stay on, say at half it's capibility? Not that I want to, or know how to, adjust to make it faster than is specified, but it would be nice to at least know when the processor is in turbo boost mode. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, turbo boosting is automatic overclocking that is managed by Intel's software. You can manually overclock if you want to.

You can use this program to monitor how Turbo Boost is working. You can't change how it works, but TB reacts instantaneously to system demands. The processor speed will constantly fluctuate depending on what you're doing. It's completely transparent to the end user.

it's automatic. it'll turn on when 1) your temperature allows it (so get a cooling pad if you want it on more often under stress), and 2) you need it (so you dont waste battery life while doing simple word processing.

has anyone who received their new 6xxx series, has also previously owned a the previous version of dv6t and dv7t SE or quad edition? (with the synaptic single clickpad and silver metal finish? what do you guys think about the build quality difference between the two versions? i hope the new 6xxx version is more of the envy build quality, which my current-soon-to-be-returned dv6-4000 cannot match at all.

Go ahead and order it as long as you don't have issues with credit card charge/limit. At least you will be in line to receive your laptop and you will have 21 days AFTER delivery to decide if you want to keep it. Plus you can keep monitoring the current coupons to keep the price down! :D

I ran a quick test on the intel graphics VS dedicated graphics
the windows system rating for intel is: 5.9 Aero, 5.1 3D graphics
the windows system rating for ATI is: 6.9 for both
    so clearly dedicated is better
but I would highly recommend you use intel 90% of the time, unless you want to play a new game on med/high settings, the intel graphics should be fine for everyday tasks

on a side note about windows system rating, it memorizes the results from when dedicated graphics are on, so if i switch to dedicated it remembers my base score of 6.9
however, whenever I go to intel it always says I need to re-run assessment, unless of course I go back to dedicated graphics... weird

I've already ordered a DV7... im holding off on the Intel WIFI 6230 card until we find out if we can get past the BIOS limitations. The WIFI card can be easily found for $25.

I'm curious why you want 5GHz capability so bad. Isn't the range on 5GHz terrible?

Myself, my father and uncle all have the Dlink DIR-825 routers and have not had any problems with the 5Ghz range.
Throughput/internal network speed is amazing, plus 5Ghz is way less crowded.

It pisses me off that my 5 year old+ Dell XPS M1710 has dual band built in, and this brand new DV7 doesnt. For $25, I'm game.

Where exactly are you planning on buying the 6230 card. Even on Amazon, the description is so vague and there's no picture. Hard to trust I'll get what I'm buying.

I have the Linksys E3000. It's dual band. that would be my reason to want a 5Ghz capable card. So, why not?

When you say you don't have problems with range on 5GHz, what kind of range are we talking? I've heard terrible figures for 5GHz, including inability (or poor ability) to transmit through walls, multiple floors, etc. I've heard, on average, that 20ft is about the furthest effective range before you get drops and signal loss.

Again, this is just what I've read in the past...

I started following this thread one day (April 5th) after ordering my dv6tqe laptop, however, I startied reading it from the beginning of the thread. I have been copying all of the important info/links to a word document and keep an ongoing compilation of it. If anyone is interested I have it if you want a copy of it. It is in word 03 format. Just trying to do my part, please bear in mind I put the GREEN into newbie here. :)

I did not include shipping info or personal comments. SOME highlights are price discounts/overclocking/readyboost/ssd/wifi/FPS testing/etc

cool. But another thing I noticed is this:
    Manufacturer Part# 62230AN.HMWG

some sites has it listed as such, but other list it as Manufacturer Part# 62230AN.HMWWB.

What do you think the difference is?

Half of it is saved here at home and the other half at work. :D I will email my work portion home tomorrow and then post it on google docs and let you know.

Then I will learn how to do a thread and post it here with the name of the new thread.

Note: I didn't copy any links for reviews.

Intel Wireless Display enables you to project personal content, online TV shows, movies, videos, and more, on your TV

Well, I called again and tried to get the 15%. I was told that NOBODY will get the 15% on top of the 30% and that there is no record of anybody getting 15% on top of the 30% in their tracking system.

After all the hassle, I did get them to price adjust for the change in coupon code, so a credit of $46.35 was added. The 10% will then be applied to than new amount, so that will bring it down to $931.63. I didn't dare bring up the memory price adjustment, etc... I'm still mad that others appear to be getting more, but at least I finally got something.

    So, for $931.63:

HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition customizable Notebook PC
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2720QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz
    • 1GB Radeon(TM) HD 6770M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • FREE Upgrade to 750GB 5400RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security(TM) 2011 - 15 Month Subscription (activation required)
    • 50% OFF!! One 6-Cell and One 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366x768)
    • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
    • Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN
    • Standard Keyboard
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

According to the rep, it is still scheduled to ship on Friday.

You've got to be kidding. A quad-core i7-2720, which is a step-up from the base quad-core and a solid video card for just $613!?!

I'd buy another laptop while the 33% off coupon is still available and sell one on Ebay. You would easily be able to sell the first laptop for at least $800.

Ordered it from buy.com last Thurs. or Friday I think for $275 + $5.50 2nd day shipping. But it's showing $299 now. Free basic shipping. That was the cheapest I could find it at the time.

    Buy.com - Intel SSDSC2MH120A2K5 510 Series 120GB Solid State Drive

Never had a SSD before, so I did a lot of fretting between this and the Vertex 3, but went with Intel because it really came down to me trusting them just a little bit more. In the end I figured either should be (hopefully) be quicker than a HD.

The 15% off coupon is for future purchases (which you might be able to convince a CSR to apply to your current order).

You need a 2nd shipping delay to get an automatic 10% off applied to your current order.

I'm really thinking of pulling the trigger on this laptop. I can get it with blu-ray for $935. However, I noticed the following screen upgrade is available:

    17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)

Is there any reason not to get this upgrade? Is the 6770M sufficient to drive this resolution display? Has anyone received this display and can comment on the viewing angles and quality?

    Thanks,

How is there a screen upgrade available? The DV7 is only available with 1 screen, no options.

I thought the display you mention was the only one available. If it's anything like the 17.3" brightview 1600x900 in my G72, the viewing angle is pretty slim. Two people can watch a movie together if they don't mind sitting very close to each other.

The 6770m is nearly 3x as fast as the 6490m. The integrated Intel graphics are 2/3 as fast as the 6490m, so I don't see any reason for the 6490m to exist as an option on these computers.

Not paying $25 to upgrade from the 6490m to the 6770m would be foolish IMHO.

The 6770m is adequate on a 1920x1080 external display, more than adequate at 1600x900 on a dv7, and very fast on a dv6 at 1366x768. See this thread for details.

I ordered my dv6 a while ago but had some issues with HP, ending up missing the Free 8GB ram ): I guess it's not a big deal since I can upgrade it (it's possible right? ) later on but still, I'll be ordering soon again.

Do you guys think the High Capacity 6-cell makes a difference? It's only 14 extra bucks.
