    (About HP dv7 quadcore)

Is there a second Hard Drive Slot?

Is there a second Hard Drive Caddy installed?

If not, where can I buy a second Hard Drive Caddy (HP Part No.), or is there a 3rd party caddy?
A picture of the hard drive bay would be very much appreciated! It's the only thing making me wait for the dv7 here in germany since the dv6 is already available. 99% of the time it will be used as a DTR hooked up to 1 or 2 monitors.
The primary hard disk will be a 256gb ssd so a second hard drive for storage is almost a necessity.

I can't get a straight answer from hp...their customer support is a f'in joke and their incompetence proves service only exists for business users @hp.

My credit card's billing address is also my Canadian address, and my PayPal billing address is that Canadian address.

I don't think HP can get your billing address from PayPal (in the order details, it lists my shipping address only, but no billing address). Afterall, PayPal only does its job of getting funds from your credit card, and HP only does its job of receiving that money.

Yep, just got my notification of delay. Original ship = 4/13

    Dear ####,

Due to product constraints we will be unable to ship your order on the original estimated ship date. The revised estimated ship date for your order is 4/22/2011 or no later than 7 business days from the original estimated ship date. However, if we are able to complete your custom order prior to that date we will ship it out and you will receive a shipping notification e-mail.

If you prefer not to wait you may cancel your order by either replying to this e-mail message with your order number or calling our toll-free customer service number at 866-217-6014 between 7:00 A.M. - 2:00 A.M. Eastern Time. If you choose to cancel your order, your refund will be released by HP within 24-48 business hours of cancellation confirmation. The posting of your refund to your credit card, e-finance, or PayPal account is subject to your bank’s processing time which usually takes 3-5 business days.

If we do not hear from you before we ship your order, we will assume you have agreed to this shipment delay and still want your custom order. As soon as your order is ready for shipment, it will be assigned a tracking number with our carrier and you will receive a Shipment Notification e-mail from us. You can then check your tracking number online to obtain the estimated delivery date.

We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused and thank you for your patience.

    Sincerely,
    Customer Service
HP Home & Home Office Store

So much hate. I don't see hwy there is resentment when it comes to people who have purchased and not yet purchased. End of the line is: We all purchased it for a reason, and the reason was it was an epic deal. no need to go get so butt hurt if you missed it.

    1. Yes.

    2. One of the first guys who received a DV7 found both primary and secondary caddies installed, but only the primary cable. Therefore he could mount a 2nd drive, but could not connect it to the motherboard. He posted pics in this thread at the time, probably around April 1st to April 3rd.

    3. The part number for the drive hardware kit is 641306-001.
I advance ordered two of them, finally got them Tuesday, already sold the one I didn't need.
The service manual states that the hardware kit includes both caddies, both cables, and mounting screws. The kits I received included one caddy, both cables, and mounting screws.

Indications from folks who have received them are that dv7's come with the second drive bracket, but not a cable to hook it up with.

So far it seems the only way to get a cable is to order the 641306-001 hard drive kit from the HP parts page. It includes cables for both primary and secondary drives and one bracket and screws. Don't know about in Germany, but it was about $40 US including shipping for me.

    kk :)

in germany, we can't configure hp systems to our liking (unlike dell & lenovo).
hp's pre-configured systems are quite good (bang per buck), but at the moment there is only one system with 2 hdds (2x500gb, ?) with a bd player and so forth...ending up +200eur above a 2620qm, 6770, 4gb, 500gb system which sells for 799€ (there's not really an alternative in this price range here in germany...but the xps 17 gt555m costs about the same after adding the additional costs (drive caddy etc) to the original 799eur.

    hp customer service here:

best case -> they refer you to the british dept. for spare parts, they then will tell you that they don't have the part

worst case -> they don't know that their 17" laptops can hold 2 hard drives

I don't like the design of the dell, but hp is making the decision very hard for me. :)

These are the two models I'm referring to:

    1) 799.-
    HP Pavilion dv7-6001sg (LC739EA) | Geizhals.at Deutschland

    2) 999.-
    HP Pavilion dv7-6015sg (LE911EA) | Geizhals.at Deutschland
(the pictures are obviously wrong, it's the new dv7!)

(german price-compare site, don't really need to understand german, you can see both the specs and the price)

neither of them available yet, but you get the picture -> if u want 2 hdds / (= 2 hard drive caddys etc), you'd also have to pay for the blu-ray player. the 4gig ram cost only ~20-25eur and I don't need a second (small) hard drive. Selling on ebay isn't really an option because its' warranty is probably bundled to the laptop itself (aka no-consumer-harddrive, they don't show up on the hard drive manufacturer service / warranty website).

Our base model comes with 4gig/640gig/6490m/DVD, but right now we get a free upgrade to 6gig/750gig/Blu-Ray player. Base price is $1250, but we've always had at least a $150 discount, making it $1100. 6770m is $25 more.
So we pay about €780 with 6770m, and get more memory and a blu-ray player.
Today, with a 30% discount, I could order one for $892.50 plus tax, or about €650 total cost.

The drive hardware kits are here:

I had the old DV7-4290us model with the 2630qm and HP claimed it had WiDi, although I didn't have it long enough to see if it worked. I've also seen a few other notebooks with the 2630qm that say they have WiDi. Whatever the deal is, I'll be pretty irritated if HP went and actually added WiDi support, rather then it just being a clarification to the specs on the website.

Just a side note for those wondering, the Bluetooth adapter on the DV7tqe is a USB unit. I've posted this before, but I see people are still speculating that it's part of the WiFi card. If you look in the device manager, you can see it listed in the properties for one the Generic USB Hubs.

Here's something kind of ridiculous. I bought the 3 accidental warranty and HP won't let me activate it. Apparently, my computer is a new model and hasn't been added to their system yet. The best part is that they had no idea when the system will be updated, maybe 2 weeks. My 21 day return period will soon run out and it would be nice to have the accidental coverage I paid for. HP is such a circus. I actually called the corporate complaint department and gave them an earful about all the headache's HP has caused me from buying this computer. This is when I found out, that even though I registered my computer online and received a conformation e-mail, my computer showed up on their system as not being registered. HP is so discombobulated.

That's very stupid of them to leave such a coverage gap. This is going to cause many problems if someone needs to claim warranty soon after they get their laptop.

    Just an update ...

I called couple of days ago to see if they could apply the 15% coupon due to the delay, they said to call back today to see if it got approved, and of course it didn't. However, they were able to offer me $50 off. So mine is down to around $887.

    Good News:

Me: "Like, how common is it, and what are some of the main causes for delay at the moment?"
Agent (Mia): "We require time to build your PC. This requires few days since it will pass to our series of test cycle."
Me: "I understand that the testing is very important, but i've read that there are some component shortages."
Me: "Is it because of Intel?"
Agent (Mia): "We are no longer experiencing that now. That was the problem with Intel, but it has been fixed."

    No More Delays hopefully :(

I've talked with hp customer service, and they said they do get the billing address, even if you pay via paypal.

I think I'll try and order via paypal today ( I'll use a us proxy to get around the all us ip address thing ), at the worst case they'll cancel it.

If money is no object to you, check out HP's new line of business laptops coming soon. HP Elitebook 8760w This blows all of HP's Pavilions and Envys out of the water. With 32GB mem, 4GB of dedicated ddr5 video mem on a quadro 5010, 17.3" display at 192x1080 res, Intel Centrino Ultimate-N6300 450Mbps with 2.4 and 5ghz connectivity(awesome) . With the option of two hard drives in raid and a SSD drive(3 drives). To me, it would be worth it if I can find a 75% off coupon code.

Fair enough. I just did a search on the passmark 3dMark06 website for the 460m and the top result was 30k ranging to 20k on the first page. I guess those could have been faked or over clocked into oblivion though.

Btw, if anyone with 6gb is looking to upgrade to 8gb this gskill I got is great: Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model F3-10600CL9S-4GBSQ . It matches the latency timing of the Micron stick so you should be good to go with just one!

Well the paypal route is a bust, they still get the billing address.

Plan B: add a secondary billing address ( which will be in the us ) to my credit card .
use a proxy to get around the ip address issue.

Can you verify they call the phone number to confirm the order, and if so what details do they ask? ( what info should I give the person which phone number I give during the order process ) ?

Side note: hp sucks, so much trouble when all I want to do is give my brother a birthday present.

Sorry that it didn't work out for you.

After I placed my order, I did receive a phone. I ordered in the middle of the night (3am) and someone called me at 4-5am but I didn't pick it up because it was so late. I'm not sure if it was HP who called me or not :p

In any case, I didn't talk with them on the phone but next morning I got the email saying my order is accepted and processed. I'm guessing that the process is much more lenient for Canadians, but since you are literally overseas they are pretty strict about it (unreasonably so).

After I ordered, they did call. It was late and they left a message to contact them back. I used skype to call them back. They said it was good, but they called again the next day and left another voice-mail asking me to call them back. I again used skype to call and the verified the order with the message left from the previous voice-mails. They said in will be process now. They called again the 3rd day and spoke to my wife. They said that since it took over 2 days to verify the order, it was canceled. While on the phone with my wife, she re-ordered the same specs for the matching price with the same credit card, but in her name.

Plan B was a bust, the VISA rep couldn't add a secondary billing address.

Plan C: I'm gonna ask friends that live in the states to place the order, and I'll transfer them the money somehow.

I didn't want to do that in the first place because money and friends shouldn't mix, and I wanted to be able to talk to hp directly when the order gets delayed ( lets face it, the why hp works it's gonna get delayed ).

If plan C wouldn't work, plan D is to fly to the states, go to the hp customer service department, set the place on fire and then order a dell.

If you encounter problems with hp customer service in a week, sorry, but that s**t had to be done :)
