I did notice some of that with the dv7 I sent back (different reason). I didn't see it as that large of a gap though (maybe pics are closer to it than I was looking). I'll let you know if my second dv7 (est. ship May 3) has the same fit issue. Otherwise, is it still solid? I know mine felt solid (no flex, rattles, etc.)

Long time reader (pages 50-306 over the past few days), first time poster.
I have finally decided to buy a HP Pavilion dv7t quad core select edition with the following configuration:
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
No Additional Office Software
FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security(TM) 2011 - 15 Month Subscription (activation required)
One 6-Cell and One 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)
FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN with Wireless Display Support
Standard Keyboard
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
I missed my opportunity to get a free upgrade to 8GB of ram, but I'm sort of happy that I missed that deal. I read some articles that said there is no significant difference between 6 and 8 GB of ram; I also read here of some people that called HP and got $30-$60 credit because of this free upgrade switch. I would rather get credit than 2 extra GB of ram; if I change my mind in the future, I can always switch upgrade it myself.
I decided to get one 6 cell and one 9 cell LI battery because I can get more battery life (even if I have to carry both of them) and I am hoping this causes my dv7t to be delayed (10% credit
).
Is there anything I should consider before officially buying it? If you guys know of a better deal than the 30% off coupon NB6973, please tell me (I'm a high school senior going to an accredited college in August-September if that helps). Thank you very much (for all your older comments and future input). -
@ APCalculus you're set, man, just pull the trigger and enjoy the wait
-
Quick (and silly) question. Can the light of the touchpad be turned off?
-
I'm aiming at most bang for the buck, so I bought this SSD (it was $80 after rebate a couple of weeks ago). I'll put O/S and program files on the SSD. If NTFS disk compression doesn't slow down the read speeds on the SSD, I'll use that to augment the capacity a bit.
Somebody on the SSD forum said that his disk monitoring program sees 1k-2k disk writes just from opening NBR in Firefox, so I'm going to put all the cache/temp files on a RAM drive, and all the important data on the 640GB HDD. -
Only along with the touchpad itself ... It actually is for looks only, but in that capacity is still pretty cool...
-
Hey can anyone give me a link to a hard drive caddy to replace the optical drive in the dv6t qe. I'm looking to have both an SSD and the 640gb hard drive, so that I can have both speed and storage.
Does anyone know if this hard drive caddy adapter would work?

I could see HP making the light (on/off) an option in the BIOS later on, but we are probably at their mercy -
Any deal links for the dv6t quad one or coupons?
-
Right now there's a code (NB8095) for 33% off the dv6t quad edition. I just checked and it still works, so you can get the dv6t quad edition for under $800 before tax.
Edit: there's also a code for $350 off, but even in the base configuration, the 33% is more of a savings. -
I was under the impression that the credit for the ram applied to people who bought before the 8gb free upgrade became available. So they got credited the difference because they could have cancelled and re-ordered for the same savings.
-
Anyone interested in buying me the laptop and shipping it to my forwarding company in NY and I'll give him a profit for it.
PLS PM me ASAP because I don't want the 33% coupon to expire.
I am 100% serious and have bought 2 laptops before from here.
with great feedback. -
You are correct, sorry APCalculus but you're outta luck on that one
-
I want to pull the trigger. Am I going to do any better for the price?
-
Could someone who have their computer put up some high-res close up pictures? I need something to drool over until I get my computer...
-
Is the power Supply a global one i.e.:
120V-240V 50/60 Hz
OR is it only
120V and 60 Hz
Could someone confirm it ASAP please -
Maybe get a blu ray drive or up the proc to the 2720. Getting 33% off those upgrades make them very attractive. You might decide someday you want to rip your blu ray movies to your mobile phone etc.. Those upgrades would future proof the laptop a bit.
-
The body seems fine otherwise, but the keyboard area has more flex than I think I would want. But primarily, now that I've noticed the gap, it sticks out like an eyesore now. Also, on the left hand side, where the headphones, usb, etc. are., I can see the circuitry and I'm just not down with that. I chatted with HP today, got an RMA number and going to send it back. I think I'm going to go for the XPS 15.
-
@APCalculus: Link to the HP Store via Fatwallet (or cash back site of your choice). Coupon still works. I got $32 and change back on a $910 dv7. You don't get your money for a few months, but then you can cash out to Paypal. By then, your laptop will have shipped and you can use your cash back on something from eBay.

The DV7tqe's is 100-240V 50-60 Hz. And it's HUGE!

Thanks a lot +rep

I hope lenovo releases the new ideapad y570 before my laptop ships. The specs and price look very promising.

3 Weeks LMAO!

Notebookcheck.net just moved the radeon hd 6770m to a class 1 graphics card.
-
Tax, could you point me in the right direction on how to do the RAM drive and how to set it up for using the cache temp files.
-
If you are waiting on your laptop and were promised a discount and then given the 10% e-mail OR if you were promised expedited shipping you might want to read my post in the order status thread.

celebration for 6770m 's promotion
although i need to check n confirmed o.0
-
6770m is still class 2 on Notebookcheck.net. were do you see that the 6770M has moved? o.0
-
So what your saying is all of us that received prior discounts from customer service and the 10% off for the second delay will only be getting a maximum of $100 off.
-
If you select a graphics to look at there's a sidebar that lists all notebook cards, the radeon 6770m used to be the first one in class 2 now it's toward the bottom of the class 1 list. It looks like notebookcheck.net hasn't updated all there comparison charts yet so it's still listed as a class 2 there.
-
I also see the that the 6770 is now class 1.Just below the GT555 from XPS17
I guess that 3GB of DDR is better than 1GB of GDDR5? -
Basically you set up your RAM drive, then use the mklink command to redirect certain directories of your choosing to the RAM drive.
The RAM drive software also has the option of saving contents to hard drive on shut down IIRC.

Are you positive? I am 100% sure that one guy bough a dv with 6GB and called HP when they made 8GB a free upgrade; he said he was a long time customer and that he would buy the ram from newegg and install it himself if they credited him the $50 for it. Another guy did the same thing, but only got $30. I'm not sure if the HP representatives were supposed to do that, but it still happened. There are a lot more cases of buying 8GB and then it becoming an free upgrade and then being credited, but I believe both work if you get a nice representative. I'll call HP tomorrow to make sure; I would chat with them today, but they can't read my text, tough, I see all of it (time stamp and all)
.
@boxpressed Thanks. I'll check it out. -
QSoft: reasonably priced and probably the best Ram Disk Software

Every time I contact HP, I've had them repeat the amount of my discounts and the total. 3 of them for $203.50 (not including initial coupon when purchasing). Hopefully I'll be able to confirm it once I receive my laptop.
Once an order is placed, they can't change it. So if you didn't select expedited shipping to begin with, you're not going to get it. -
It worked like this:
1. Order while free RAM is 6G.
2. When free RAM is 8G, call them up and say, hey, I'd like that 8G.
(we can't change your order after it goes 'into production')
OK, can you refund me the difference, or should I cancel the order and reorder the computer with the free 8G?
(you can't cancel your order once it goes into production)
But I can send it back within 21 days at your expense.
(you don't need 8G, it's useless to have 8G in a computer, you moron....blah....blah...10 minutes of blah...blah)
I have a use for that memory, I don't need to explain it to you, and by the way, I already bought the extra memory.
(oh, really?)
Yeah, I bought a 4G DDR3 1333mhz, it cost me $50.
(another ten minutes of blahblahblah and I had a $50 refund)
The important part of all that is there was a current offer of 8G free, and I could easily take advantage of that offer and make them take back my 6G computer and sell it as a refurb. You don't have that leverage now. -
I think WiDi has been supported on the DV6/DV7 from the start. The WiDi software is installed on my DV7tqe and it does allow you to do a search for a receiver. I also don't think it's true that the 2630qm doesn't support WiDi. There are many laptops on the market with the 2630qm that advertise WiDi as a feature. I plan on buying receiver soon, so I'll verify it once and for all.
-
Can anyone come up with a reason why I shouldn't cancel my dv6tqe and order the quick ship dv6-6091nr with free 2 day shipping. Specs are exactly the same except for the 1 tb 5400rpm hard which I don't care about and no wireless Bluetooth.
-
It seems to be the last generation dv6... it has a radeon 6570 which is much slower than the 6770
-
the quick-ship apparently doesn't have gigabit and only a GDDR5 6570.
-
I don't think anyone on this forum will ever order from HP again after this. This mass miscommunication and problems with shipping is just sickening.
-
If you click the specs tab then select view specs PDF it shows it comes with the 6770 not the 6570, in that same PDF it shows 2 USB 3.0 port which aren't shown on hps specs page. I called hp and they confirmed the PDF is accurate.

THANKS! Repped.
-
Thanks for commenting taxmantoo; I read most of this thread over 2 days, so I did not have time to note where key events were (e.g. your earlier post). At the moment, I want the dv7t to arrive shortly after AP/IB testing (with a decent chance of getting extra money) more than I want to go from 6 to 8GB. There is a fair chance of HP making 8GB a free upgrade again within my time limit. I know it's a gamble, but I would be fine even if things didn't go as I hoped. Again, thank you for your post.
P.S. How much was the tax on your dv? I'm paying like $73
-
Tax varies by state. on 979.99 i paid 96.80
Btw I'm pretty sure they don't adjust your tax if you receive any additional discounts after you placed your order. -
1) You can't cancel your order once it's been placed. HP will ship it to you and then you'll have to contact them to get an RMA number within 21 days and then return (shipping is HP's expense). Depending on your financial situation that may be a burden (cost of 2 laptops out of your debit or on credit for a couple of weeks). I think HP will issue the refund once Fedex receives the laptop for a return, but it might take a couple of days to process back to you.
2) Does the "quick ship" really ship immediately? -
That would be the case but because of the delays by law they have to give you the option to cancel if you want to. The quick ship model currently is being offered with free two day shipping which I was told would be at my house by Tuesday our at the latest wed.
-
Yeah if you've already received the email stating that you have to contact them in 3 business days to keep your order / that you can cancel your order you should be good.
I'm still hesitant to believe anything that HP says. Assuming the technical arguments posted in earlier replies to you haven't dissuade you, then I'd place the new order first, and wait for a shipping notification before canceling the older one.
