I have never found a stable PC version of iTunes.
-
I hate to say it, but "it depends".
You'll notice the most heat reduction difference simply by raising the back of the laptop an inch or two off the ground. Some 9-cell raised batteries do this already.
Personally, I use a model that props up the back end of my DV6t with two fans that blow air across the bottom of the unit, which causes hot air to exhaust out both sides. It works very well. I also have a Rosewill pad made for 15" laptops that I use, also a dual fan deisgn, but is a full "slab" type cooler.
The heat difference is noticable between using a cooler and not using a cooler, especially on the palmrests. However, I don't have any hard numbers. Probably a good opportunity to run Prime95 again!
-Rip -
I tried my friends thermaltake 230mm cooler and it made no difference in terms of the actual temperatures of the core components. With or without the cooler, the highest CPU goes to 91C. However the palm rest is noticeably cooler to the touch while gaming which is good.
-
It's probably because you're over clocking your graphics card. That's never good for stability. See if you stop OC'ing if you still have those crashing problems.
-
I'm not always OCed... I OC for benchmarks, that's about it...
-
If this is the case neither of these laptops would fit the bill as neither has a full 1080p screen. I believe to get the 1080p screen you would need to go to the 17" ENVY.
-
I know but for the price.. it is an hd screen. Its not FULL HP but really, how much of a difference is there? Miniscule to me
-
How much of a difference is there?
For a 1366x768 screen the difference between a 1080p display is exactly 1,024,512 pixels. For a 1600x900 screen the difference between a 1080p display is exactly 633,600 pixels.
Seriously though, I would think if you are video editing 1080p video you would still want a screen that can display at full resolution. -
Okay, thanks! That's what I was thinking. It's so funny...Optimus is supposedly this selling point, but I avoid any system with it like the plague
-
@ Wolfpup
????, Updating drivers to your hearts content applies to only amd switching between amd cards. Not between intel and amd.
Unfortunately, the newer AMD Dynamic Switchable Graphic is similar with Nvidia Optimus. Your model card is supported but the driver isn't available for maybe some quite some time. -
Okay...so you CAN'T use AMD's normal drivers on this after all?
-
These won't work?
ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver -
The answer is no, they don't work.
There is also a note, Models with switchable with Intel are not supported.
The following notebooks are not compatible with this release:
- Any notebook launched after this driver release
- Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel® chipsets.
- Toshiba® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
- Sony® VAIO® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
- Panasonic® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks) -
Gotcha. Thanks!
AMD Catalyst? 11.3 Release Notes -
Thanks Rip, I am starting to lean towards getting one just for when it is sitting on a desk while gaming. That little bit of elevation will hopefully help with circulation. Could anyone reccomend me a good sturdy brand?
-
Anyone buying a bag for their dv7t? I'm leaning towards this. Not sure of the dimensions though.
-
Dang, thanks! I wish I'd understood that when I first started looking at the system-I assume that rules out the Envy 17 also?
Do you know if the 15/17" Macbook Pros have the same issue? Worse GPU and no built in Blu Ray, and 2x+ the cost though :-/ -
Just use modded drivers, those work.
-
I posted before, the current public properly working modded drivers that has switching enabled with Intel for x64 environment, requires Windows to permanently run in test mode, which disable the MS security features.
I don't think Envy 17 are switchable at all. Feel free to correct me on this cause I'm bothering to check
-
That is a nice looking bag. Looks like you may have saved me the trouble of looking! Let me know if it works.
-
I'm planning on buying it when I get the laptop, sooo I'd say around June
-
So the real question is.... Will we be able to cancel our orders when the new DV7 comes out and ours has not shipped yet!!
-
I was also leaning toward that same bag at first, but then I decided I would go with a backpack style bag.
I found this one:
Amazon.com: Swiss Gear Ibex 17-Inch Notebook Backpack: Electronics
Best Buy is carrying the same exact bag for $99
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Swiss+Gear+-+IBEX+Laptop+Backpack+-+Blue/8483036.p?id=1186003258092&skuId=8483036&st=swissgear&cp=1&lp=3
so this saves me a bit of cash. Also, I currently own another Swissgear bag for my old 15inch DV6000, and it can take a beating without harming the laptop.
-
i lol'ed at the progression of your smileys in your signature.
-
I'm running catalyst 11.4a, switchable graphics are working just fine, and MS security features are still enabled...
-
Tell me about it. At the end of the day, If I don't smile about the whole situation I'm going to jump out the window
-
I said before, the results are not consistent. some are successful and some are not.
I emphasized "properly working", cause little increase temperatures, brightness controls are working, properly working switch, 3d application render switch, mlaa support , or odd video behavior + whole bunch more.
Also 11.4 isn't officially out but thanks for testing. -

I personally don't care about switching. I'll run on the AMD GPU all the time if it means I can consistently update to the latest drivers, or fall back on a recent set (aside from what HP offers) should I have problems.
If this has already been answered, I apologize, but is there an option in the BIOS to disable the Intel and go solely on the AMD GPU? -
No, there are no bios option to disable the intel hd.

I think we are finding there are quite a few additional options and settings HP needs to give us in the BIOS.
Does anyone know what their track record is for adding additional options after the initial BIOS release, such as in the DV6/DV7 5000 series, etc?? -
Not much, most of the time just bug fixes that are already been resolved via software.
But they do add more hardware into the whitelist. They just don't always document it. -
I don't know if I want to shell out $70 for a backpack =/ I'm just a broke student
-
I was going to get a Case Logic backpack, but last weekend NewEgg had a Shell Shocker on the Swiss Gear 17" Mythos messenger bag for $24.99, so I grabbed a pair of those. I'll let the lounge know if one of those ends up being surplus to my needs, but I expect them both to be needed.
-
Wow... a swissgear messenger for $25 ? I would of jumped on that if I knew about it
-
Walmart had a Targus for a 17 notebook for $11 shipped. I guess I should of posted the link here for everyone
-
Targus 17" Sport Laptop Backpack $10 + $1 Shipping @ Walmart
It appears to be out of stock online, but you might have luck with their in-store search. I ordered one.
-Rip -
AAhhhhh yes, there's the link ! Didn't think it would still be up
-
I wonder what the padding is like.

OK, can you run solely on the AMD by switching to it within Windows, installing the latest drivers, and letting it run that way? Switching would be disabled, but at least in theory you could run the latest AMD drivers all the time. -
Anyone who has a dv7 can you verify that you can turn on vt extensions in the bios or if you know if they are on by default?
From what Ive been reading this bios is probably going to be the first big project for me once i get the damn thing. -
Without rebooting (can't at the moment), I believe it's on by default. I'm running VMWare Workstation on mine with no issues.
-
What mouse drivers did those of you that formatted your computers install after formatting, I installed this one: Download License Agreement | Synaptics
I feel that the touchpad is not nearly as good as the out of the box configuration before I formatted and on this site: Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv6-6001sg Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) there is no mouse driver
Thanks in advance,
Robert
Edit:
It would be very nice if someone who successfully formatted the computer and installed all the drivers could write what drivers he used for what, because I have installed a trackpad driver and it works fine but it does not suppord the button to turn it on and off. -
I had a dv7-4295 for about a week before returning it. The VT option in the BIOS was disabled. There was some sort of warning about enabling it but don't recall exactly what it said. I ignored it and never saw any issues but only had the laptop for a week.
-
Bump.
Anybody? -
what you talking about? my DV9700t supports booting from the second HDD. I have windows 7 on the C Drive and XP on the D drive. Upon start up, I choose which OS I want.
-
Mine does not support it. I'd imagine everyone else with the DV7tqe's have the same BIOS as I too.
-
Even if the bios does not directly allow you to boot from the 2nd drive, your should be able to accomplish that with a modified boot.ini file for Windows:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 7" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
This is not an actual boot.ini but illustrates what should work. No idea what you need to boot from Linux on a 2nd drive. -
For linux os, we primarily use grub as our bootloader.
There are other methods to use the windows bootloader to load linux os too.
But it follows the idea as above. -
Thanks for responding. On my desktops (Asus motherboards), I can press a key when the computer starts to produce a bios generated menu allowing me to choose which hard disk, optical disk, etc. to boot from. This way multi-boot is possible without the Windows or a 3rd party boot manager. The system sees the selected hard disk as the first disk and boots to it.
A couple of years ago when I was researching a new notebook, a few posts on HP's own support forums said that the bios did not allow booting to the secondary internal drive ... that the bios generated menu showed the first drive, optical drive, etc., but not the secondary hard drive. HP had crippled the bios in that regard (which wouldnt' be so surprising). Googling the subject now produces no recent info (not difficult to understand the lack of hits if it's no longer an issue) and the service manuals provide little detail on the bios setup screens. So I just thought I would ask those who would know.
Thanks, again. Now I will just continue to wait for delivery.
