I already have the quick ship (with the 6770M GPU), but it has a 1TB 5400RPM drive and I would prefer the 640GB 7200RPM one that is in my customized model. I think I'll post it on eBay as an auction starting at $950 + shipping. If no buys then I'll return it to HP.

Got my dv7t today.
1) Torture being at work then school, knowing it was at home. Fedex delivered on time (well same day, but later time than estimate).
2) It is beautiful and the material feels great. Hardly notice that it is "umbre," looks pretty much black.
3) Going from a 14in, 13in, and 11in to a 17in makes it seem gigantic.
4) The trackpad is 100x better than the previous gen. 100 might be an exaggeration, but how do you compare useable to unusable.
5) The HDD cover feels incredible flimsy. Thought I was going to rip it in half trying to remove it (fortunately didn't).
6) Not a huge fan of the half sized up and down keys, but oh well. -

The Envy 17 ISN'T affected though? No driver support is an absolute deal killer for me.

dv7t 2nd Harddrive Installation:
Not rocket science. More of a fine touch endeavor (could HP have made those screws any shorter?!). Use something thin to help you initially pry off the cover (bottom plastic piece of laptop). Feels flimsy, but holds together pretty well, just go slowly.
Mine (and what seems like most so far [what a waste]) dv7t came with a 2nd bracket already mounted. However it was missing the cable (long one needed, approx 10 inches) and missing the screws to mount the Harddrive to the Bracket. I bought the HDD Kit from HP (part number in here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02792350.pdf - dv7t 6000 series manual).
You have to attach the cable, then screw on the bracket (bracket covers the connector on the Harddrive).
Recommended Order (for both Harddrive Slots):
Disconnect Cable from Mobo
Unscrew everything (note that the screws for the bracket and hdd are different lengths)
Attach Cable to HDD
Screw HDD into Bracket
Screw Bracket to Laptop
Plug Cable Back into Mobo
btw Remember the orientation of the cable where it connects to the Mobo. Use that same orientation for both connections.
*I installed my SSD in the slot where the original HDD was. Which is correct according to the manual (that slot is for the primary / boot hdd). However, when I went to install windows it lists the primary slot as Disk 1 and the secondary slot (where the old hdd is now) as Disk 0. Strange.
*IMO if you're rocking two SSDs you could probably skip the extra set of screws, and just use 2 to mount a SSD to the bracket (ie: take 2 of the 4 screws from the original SSD/Bracket and use it on the 2nd SSD/Bracket combo). My thinking is that no moving parts = no vibrations, therefore can't come lose.
*btw there's really only one right way to install windows...usb to ssd =) I think it took me longer to install the SSD and HDD than to install windows (less than 10 minutes...hehe). -
dv7t dual harddrive boot
Someone was asking if you can set either hard drive as the primary one for booting purposes. FYI: I didn't see any such option in the bios. -

Has anyone tried to change the WLAN adapter in the DV7T? I purchased the Intel Advanced-N 6230, installed it, and the laptop will not boot saying the adapter is not supported (even though it's in the list in the manual). Also, has anyone that ordered the bluetooth option looked at the WLAN adapter to see which adapter that is? I know there were others looking at the 6230 adapter like myself.

1) I have to download and run this program BEFORE I start the hard drive for ssd swap, correct ?
2) Once I install my ssd onto the primary HDD slot drive, all I need to do is run this program from USB/DVD ?
Thank you -

1) Download the Windows 7 .iso that corresponds to the version installed on your machine. Use the thread in the Windows forum here to find download links.
2) Download and install the DVD to USB tool.
3) Insert your thumb drive and run the DVD to USB tool. Follow the prompts, and let the program do its thing. It should take about 5-10 minutes to complete.
4) Shut down your machine and install the SSD into your notebook.
5) Insert the bootable USB drive into your machine, and power it on. Go into the BIOS to check that the USB drive is recognized. Save any changes you make.
6) Reset the machine. At the initial bootup screen, press whatever key is necessary to access the boot menu. I don't know what the exact key is for HP systems. On my MSI it was F12, and on a Lenovo it was the Esc key. When the boot menu appears, select your USB drive.
7) Install Windows as normal.
Good luck. -

Would any dv7 owner mind weighing their notebook with the 6 cell battery on ?
I know HP claims 6.72 lbs, but I want to check the accuracy of this.
Thanks -
Anyone know how to get the Blu Ray software player installed after a fresh install? which folder is it in the swsetup?

As for the 6230, try updating the bios and try again. Error 104 is a bit annoying, can be triggered by poor contact, so try reinserting it -
does the dv6 quad edition has 2 hdd bays?

How much space does a windows 7 install take with the usb method on this laptop after all the updates and drivers? I'm trying to decide whether 128gb on the Crucial Realssd c300 would be sufficient on a dv6tqe.
-
According to a Microsoft forum mod, it should take up around 20gb.

I have the dv7t-4295us model. Its the quick ship model with the new sandy bridge chip and the only thing I dont like about it is the 5400 rpm drive. I want to upgrade to a faster drive and use the original drive in the second bay. My question is will this notebook support SATA III drives and if so do I have to disassemble to the point of changing the cable on the board? Or are the MB connections accessable from the drive bay? From what I have read I know I will probably have to buy the HP caddy kit with the cable for the second bay as I dont think the second drive bay has one. Any source for the caddy and cable other than HP that is known to work? I dont think that I want to go the SSD just due to the cost of them being so out of sight. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if this has a spillproof keyboard? My wife likes to spill wine on my laptops.

Can anyone with the DV7 tell me if the computer has Splashtop? Bought my daughter a DV7-4060us last week (good buy - $524), and to my amazement Splashtop was on it. Not mentioned in any of the specs or docs, either. I had this on a Gigabyte motherboard for a while, and really liked the quick access to the web. Splashtop site says that DV7's now carry it. Can anybody clue me in? Thanks.

So I finally got my laptop after getting home..and I'm confused about how to get Vantage to work. It says minimum resolution not supported. Help?

It may have been posted already (can't seem to search effectively at the moment), but does anyone have the model number of the 640GB 7200RPM drive shipping with the dv6t and dv7t?
I've ordered the 640/7200 in a dv6tqe for my fiance, but have a 500GB Scorpio Black that I pulled from my MacBook which is a great performer as far as non SSD/hybrid drives go.
I assume the performance will be within expectations, but I haven't seen a model number anywhere. -

Hi.
A few questions about the new dv6t quad edition.
1. Is there an option to enable/disable virtualization in the BIOS? Will need to use VMware thats why. Will virtualization software run properly?
2. Is the WLAN and Bluetooth from Broadcom? And is it Bluetooth 2.1 or 3.0?
Thanks -
is there any caddy available for this dv6-6000 series to remove the odd and use the hdd as a secondary hdd? i have vertex 2 60 gb i really want to use as boot drive
abt link where can i get this caddy for 6000 series? -

I don't see why the dv6t wouldn't support it. -
EDIT: Or if you mean externally - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153066 -
I got the 750gb 5400 instead of the 640gb 7200rpm. I heard the 7200 is worse on battery and they fail at a faster rate then the 5400.. do you think my laptop will be slow with the 5400 or alright? I have the i7

So I finally got the dv6 today. I really like it so far. The only negative besides no backlit keyboard(which we will resolve with a replacement keyboard) is the amount of bloatware.
One thing though. I know there was much debate about whether the 2630qm had wireless display. I thought the final verdict was that it did not? If not, why does my 2630qm have the wireless display app pre installed? I don't have a receiver yet, but I am sure hp and intel wouldn't install it on a pc that could not use it?
