I have noticed that too. They are either trying to sell these or are trying to get hits on their channel by mislabeling videos.

I've had my dv7 for a few weeks now and I am enjoying it. However, I am having some problems and I am hoping you all can help me.... since I am not super computer literate. These will probably seem like simple questions to you but, please help me....

    1. All of a sudden my Adobe Flash stopped working on Internet Explorer so I am no longer able to view any type of internet videos (youtube, etc.). I tried to download it and when I click the download link.... well it just stops, I get a dead end. (This is on Internet Explorer. I was able to download it on my Firefox browser.??)

    2. I can seem to get the type large on my Firefox browser. It's large on IE but I can't seem to get it large on Firefox. I like the larger type, since my eyes are getting older....

Can someone help me with these issues.... using simple language please. Thank you!!

    1. start->control panel->uninstall a program->Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X. Uninstall that and then reinstall should fix it up.

    2. Hold down Ctrl and then press the + or - signs.

Obviously you want to leave the resolution native (1600x) for the DV7, since anything else will make the display blurry. LCDs only support 1 native resolution in which they work best at. However, you can increase the DPI to make the texts easier to read throughout windows. I do this on my 1080P 1920x1080 solution screen.

Right click any empty space on your desktop....choose screen resolution...choose "make text and other items larger or smaller". Try increasing the % to 125 or 150. If you don't like those, choose "set custom text size (DPI)" over on the left. Also, you ALWAYS want to have cleartype text on. That is an option there as well.

In Firefox, hold down the control key "Ctrl" and hit:
the "+/=" button (next to "Backspace") to make things bigger.
Hit the minus to make it smaller.
Hit "0" (zero) to go back to default size)

The second issue is very simple. You hold down control (in almost all Internet Browsers today) and scroll up or down to increase and decrease size of text. Scrolling either through two-finger, or chiral-motion or however you can with the trackpad. If you can't do it this way, you can go to tools -> options -> content tab -> and select font size from there.

As for your Flash situation, there can be many things stopping the installation on Internet Explorer, My advice is to try again, incase you see any pop-ups or notices asking for permission, or User account control, then you'd have to give them permission.

Admin have more control / privileges over the system. It's easier for Viruses and Malware to install themselves. If you were in a regular account and a Virus or Malware was trying to install itself, it might run into privilege issues, and not be able to install.

Basically if you're the only user, you're diligent about backing up, and you're not prone to getting viruses / etc, then you should be fine as an admin. But if you like to open every email attachment forwarded to you, click indiscriminately on p0rn links, and don't update your system, anti virus, and adobe frequently, then you might want to avoid using the admin account.

For me, it would have been cheaper but not better. I don't prefer to have to install the drive and move operating system to SSD and re-set it all up, etc. The hours I spend doing that - and the time wasted with predictable issues that will arise - are worth way more to me than a couple hundred bucks it will cost extra to get it set up, ready to go.

Yes, I know what you mean. I was aware of that, as well. If I didn't mind the time required to deal with the maneuvering, I would have done as you suggested. There do seem to be a few SSD's that are much faster on the writes - at least the specs say that. Your suggestion is definitely the way to go for those who don't mind spending hours setting up computers and software. I've done so much of that in the past, I just abhor it these days.

I wish there was a fast way to get all my stuff off of my current HDD onto the new computer's SSD when it arrives. I even anticipate aggravation just doing that. It literally takes too long to move 10 years of Outlook data, all my Word files, etc. - and to have to locate those obscure, hidden files that contain preferences, auto-text, custom menus, and such. Argh!!!

I was browsing the Envy 17 owner's lounge earlier today, and they had been complaining that their two drive 160GB/640GB laptops were shipping with RAID enabled. All the software was striped across two disks, and it took a fair bit of work to put it right. I hope they don't do that to dv7s.

So I've had my dv6tqe for approximately a month now. My original comments regarding the model have not changed significantly since then.

The 6770m has proven itself to be more than powerful enough for my needs and the Intel chip has plenty of power considering it runs cooler and uses less power. Effectively, I use the Intel chip unless I'm playing games.

The screen quality and resolution is the glaring weakness to this system. Considering the model's specs, the 1366x768 sticks out. It bothers me at times due to the pixel density, but I have gotten use it for the most part. I would imagine it's fine for the majority of users out there, but I would need a 1080p screen for proper photo/video editing.

The biggest surprise at this point for me is how quickly the aluminum chassis shows finger prints. Also, the system will alternate fan speed quite a bit when the 6770m is being utilized - one of the reasons why I stick with the Intel chip the majority time (even on AC power).

All in all, after many weeks of daily use - I am still very pleased with this system considering the cost.

An interesting note. My model was one of the first shipped and I do have some keyboard flex in certain areas (nothing really significant). My brother received his model about a week ago, a dv6tqe as well, and his keyboard has absolutely zero flex.

    Hi
Need a favour from anybody in the forum. I am looking for a unused 15% off unused coupon that you might have received as a compensation for your shipping delay. I have read in the forum that some folks have received it, but they see no value in it. It would really help me since i plan to purchase an accessory.
In return, Thanks in advance and i will be glad to donate a small amount to a charity of your choice.

Register your laptop with HP after you receive it. HP should send you a 15% off coupon after you register (at least I did). I tried looking for the 15% off coupon for the shipping delay, but I can't seem to find it. Good luck

Hello, Everybody. I purchased Pavilion dv6-6017tx notebook (Core i7-2630qm, 4GB DDR3, 500GB 5400rpm, Radeon 6770M, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) yesterday. I have a few queries. It would be helpful if anybody could clarify them.

    1) I want to install Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC. For that, I run the Microsoft HAL Detection Tool and it reported that Hardware Assissted Virtualization is not enabled in my notebook and directed to enable in BIOS. Then, I opened BIOS(F.06) but could not find any option for enabling Virtualization. I checked Intel's Website and verified that the Core i7-2630qm processor does support Hardware Assissted Virtualization (VT-x). So, how can I enable Virtualization in my notebook ?

    2) Have anyone tried using the HP Recovery Manager to restore the system ? I created the backup DVDs from the Recovery Manager. When I run it, I saw there is one option on Reseting to Factory state and there is another option of Minimized System Recovery which stated that it would clean install Windows with only the Drivers and Required Softwares (devoid of the Bloatware or Trial Softwares and Games). Can somebody please clarify that the minimized system recovery could be as good as clean installing from a Windows 7 DVD ? Also, will it format the C drive only and re-install windows keeping the other partitions untouched or re-format the whole hard disk and re-build all the partions (including HP_TOOLS and Recovery partition) and re-install windows ?

    3) In switchable graphics, I changed to Power-Saving GPU (Intel HD 3000). But after restarting Windows, I saw that the GPU switched automatically to High-Performance GPU. Is there any way to make the Intel GPU as default and I will switch to Dedicated Radeon 6770M GPU only when I am playing Games ?

    4) I am using my notebook on a table always connected to AC Power. Will leaving the battery in the notebook while always using AC Power degrade the battery capacity over time ? Is it advisable to remove the battery from the notebook and store it to prolong its life ? I want the battery to remain healthy so that I can get its full performance when I will need to travel with my notebook at some later time.

    5) ALso, I tried using HP SimplePass 2011 with Firefox 4 and it is not working (but is working in IE 9 and FF 3.6.x). I also saw in another discussion about using Fingerfox(SE) extension in Firefox 4. I also tried that and it also doesn't seem to work. Is there any other Fingerprint Software alternative which can be used in Firefox 4 ?

    6) In HP Commercial Notebooks, HP provides a software for Face Recognition through Webcam. But, in the Pavilion series notebooks, HP doesnot provide any such Face Recognition Software. So, can that commercial notebook's face recognition software be used in pavilion dv6 ? Or, are there any good 3rd party face recogntion software that I can use in my dv6 ?

If time is money and you would rather not fool with it then the BEST BUY Geek Squad may be for you. I was told by HP Tech Support when inquiring about a Hard Drive upgrade to a Pavilion that I returned that I should have Best Buy install and set up the drive as they were Authorized HP service techs. I dont know the quality of their work and someone here may be able to speak to that issue but you could dump your old and new unit on them and have a newer better SSD installed and the old files moved over in one fatal swoop. Pick it up when they are done. You may want to be careful about filling that SSD up too much as I have heard that may creat some issues.

Can you tell me how to find this option ?

I just received my dv7 yesterday, and I'm not really feeling the screen. It feels washed out, and of course, there is the "sweet spot" everyone talks about, but it is a small spot  It seems my four year old 15inch dv6000 had a much better viewing angle.

Anything I can do to the screen settings, or any settings in general to improve this ? I really want to love, and KEEP my new notebook. Other than this, everything else about it seems great.

    Thanks all !

I searched the thread but couldn't find anything. As you all know it seems the DV7tqe's are coming with the 2nd HDD caddy pre-installed, but missing the longer SATA -> mobo custom cable and 4 screws to hold the HDD into the caddy.

Anyone know what part numbers the longer HDD SATA cable is and for the screws? Or better yet, where to order? Thanks in advance!

As of right now, you can't order just the cable. You have to go to HP.com and find the whole kit, which brings two cables, screws, and the mounting brackets.

I don't have the item number, but I know its been posted throughout these forums a few times. Good luck on your search !

Its more than a little disconcerting that HP is continually bumping out ship dates with little or no indication as to why. It smacks of that "we dont give a crap about our customers attitude". I wold appreciate a specific reason myself. I just orderd so I havent been bumped out yet but I was hoping to see some signs of HP getting its sh!t together. Not yet though I fear.

    It is certainly because of:
1). Cougar-Point issue and because of that, back-ups in production.
2). New series (DV6, DV7) which are popular and get many orders. They run out of the parts to make them.

Now I understand that their Customer Service is not the best! But call them up, ask them for compensation for delay and they will help you out. I agree that HP needs to better organize themselves (or have a proper estimate for shipping), but I would have my shipments delayed again (if I was ordering again) so that I could save another $200. I'm happy I ordered when I did.

I don't know if ASUS, Dell would easily give you these amazing coupons and compensations. And during the "off" season last year when my Brother bought his DV6z, it came very fast, a day before estimated. :)

    I like HP.

can someone who has received their laptop comment on the metal chassis on the laptop? does it "feel" like a metal sheet covering the laptop or a metal plate? (metal sheet feel is what i would call the dv6-3000/4000 series, metal plate is like the envy 14/17)

    thanks a bunch

I want to know as well. I know the whole bottom is plastic, and I hear the metal is prone to fingerprints :(
    What about scratches?
    Conduct Heat at all?

The problem is how the Sandy Bridge utilize its embedded GPU to save on battery power. Disabling the auto core switching will disable the embedded GPU causing it to utilized the external GPU. That will defeat your purpose in achieving maximum battery life. You can always disable the wifi/bt(use the LAN), replace the hard drive with an SSD, turn you display brightness down, mute sound and nothing in the usb ports.

Overall I like the chassis. The metal has a nice smooth feel to it. It defiantly does not feel like plastic, though it is not high quality metal. The gray band around the side of the laptop is extremely cheap. It is made of the cheapest material that they could stick on it. It bend with little force, but this is not a huge deal. It does not transfer too much heat. Yes it will heat up while gaming, but no more than any other laptop. The top/back of the screen always has a cold metal feel to it. It is a fingerprint magnet, but it comes off easily it a decent microfiber cloth. As far as scratched go, I am a little paranoid about it, but I don't know for sure.
    Hope that helps.

The 6000 is certainly NOT a metal chassis ... I BELIEVE they changed the description to 'metal finish'. Now the 4000 wasn't a true metal chassis either, but I believe the top surfaces were solid. The 6000 seems to have a metal skin on top of what I guess to be plastic. The machine looks good and has a solid build, but I question it road-worthiness under harsh conditions. I believe it will require a little TLC.

Don't get me wrong, you are getting a lot of performance for a $1K, but nothing special was added to enhance chassis integrity.

Something else that grinds me a bit is the glossy screen bezel that already has visible micro scratches ... which I assume I caused, but NOT through any conscious actions.

These programs CCleaner--Revo--decrapifier just get rid of the shell like exe program files files but not all the data put into your registry!! Also they leave trails in your main drive most are C: after you use the program to delete leftovers like a folder named from the one you deleted will remain and in the registry alot will still be there just follow the regedit type the name after you uninstalled the programs and you will find crap still on your system---Remember when using regedit before you go in and make any changes make a back up---So delete all the crap using CCleaner--Revo--decrapifier-- they all work okay---make sure your write down what you deleted--then go into regedit make a back-up then go to town getting rid of all the crap you wrote down!! im sure you will understand once you see what I am talking about any questions let me know-- echo
P.S BIOS WILL BE UPDATED to show proper chipset within 48 to 72 hours VIA Hp Supervisor tech!! All (B2) chips left warehouse before jan 31st---

I'm a little lost on the viewing angle issue that most people are bringing up. If you want viewing angle, you're probably needing a good TV or monitor. I know that people pay good money for privacy filters for laptops to kill the viewing angle when you're in a public location. I don't know if that's the line that HP walks when making these consumer, "coffee shop friendly" machines.
