I think it is going to pose a particular challenge because it will require much more disassembly. I like the suggestion about creating a bootable USB or SD drive that had a multiboot loader defaulting to your second disk drive better. You get only one creation of the recovery discs, so I can't check the program options anymore. That method holds promise... and logically makes a whole lot more sense. You could probably do the exact same thing using a bootable DVD... I just have never attempted it

While you may already be aware of Newmodeus, he may want to look at HP Hard Drive Caddys. Newmodeus sells optical drive caddies for HP notebooks, although they may not have one that fits the new dv7 yet.

    Hey all!
It's been a while since my last post, here's the update. I got a refund for my last dv7; ordered a new one due to issues with the WLAN adapter. Just opened up my new one about an hour ago and everything seems fine. Just a few notes about the differences about the old/new one. I do notice that the build quality, i.e. gaps around the edges are much smaller, is much better on this new one. Not that it was that noticeable on the origional. The BIOS says F 07, I think that's the updated one that shows the correct chip, but I haven't confirmed it yet. I assume all hardware has updated firmware, but without trying to download all of them from HP, is there a way for the laptop to automatically check (like windows update?) I fear changing anything because it's working well (if it ain't broke don't fix it)
    Thanks for everyone's advice.

my concern primarily is based on my experience disassembling the dv7 to the point of removing the optical drive and installing the caddy. I like this computer, but I have ZERO confidence that most people have the ability to take on this task. The service manuals are a good guide, but nothing matches the actual task. There are a lot of little plastic tabs that are going to pose a challenge to the uninitiated... but the one way ya learn is ... This is NOT the same as working on a desktop machine... it is more like trying to open a TV remote control (and being able to reassemble it) IF you can pass THAT challenge, you are probably ready to tackle the laptop.

I'm glad I got the i7, with the multi-threaded multi-core video and audio encoding apps showing use of all 8 threads and 4 cores at nearly 100% CPU, it is worth it for future proofing's sake.

I would not be fearful of taking the notebook apart. I have pulled a Sony Vaio apart to repair the display backlight and inverter and managed to get through that only pulling half my hair out. Notebooks are an animal unto themselves though as far a getting them apart. So you have placed the HDD in the optical bay? Is that what Im hearing you say? Isnt the optical bay wired to the SATA II port?

No ... I took mine apart ... just because... I had to be far more careful with this laptop than anything else I have ever disassembled (well maybe not). I made the TV remote analogy, because that is what it reminded me of ... there were little tricks the whole way. I have a fair amount of experience taking things apart; this was right up there in the difficulty level. The optical drive, and the two USB 3.0 ports occupy 3 of the SATA II ports

Is there a way to enable two finger right click on the DV6/DV7? I'm disappointed that I don't see a way to do this out of the box.

I want to get a multi monitor setup going to dock the laptop to, since the specs say that the 6770 can control multiple monitors. The number of display ports keep getting referenced though. Anyone know if there is a DVI splitter, or something for controlling multiple monitors?

Because the team that made this BIOS forgot to include it. There's no other reason. We maaay get it in a future BIOS update if we bug em enough.

Mine looks pretty crappy too. I'm almost thinking about sending it back in to get the screen replaced.

The Quick-Ships came is double boxes and the customized ones came in a single box. My guess is that the Quick-ships will also be sold in stores with that second "inner" box.

    To enable two finger scroll........

Right click on synaptics task .

Click box that says enable gestures.

Right click again for settings under properties tab

One finger scroll with chiralMotion is much better!

You start in the top right corner (to engage Chiralmotion), start to scroll down and move your finger in a clockwise circle to scroll down and counter-clockwise to scroll up, I really recommend it!

Once it is engaged you can make circles wherever you want, you're not limited to the right side at all.

    :D

after activating scroll function (right edge of pad)
You can continue scrolling by using a one finger circular motion.
When in properties, select one finger scroll, there is a video demo available by the box to select the chiralMotion function

    I found it's Samsung Sec4251.
But it's not exact panel ID

I personally think the screen is bad, worse than my sony SB.
The black is pretty much gray.

Anybody interested in purchasing the original manufacture ram that came in my dv7t quad? I'm thinking about upgrading to 8 gb matching Crucial ram. I can sell one or both.

According to cpu-z these are my two ram specs:
-Slot 1: 4 gb Micron Technology (part #:16jsf51264hz-1g4d1)
    -Slot 2: 2 gb Hyundai Electronics (part #: hmt325s6bfr8c-h9)

    Both are ddr3 pc3-10700 (667 MHz)

If interested, PM me with your price.

I accept paypal and can ship anywhere in the Continental US (48 states).

    Hey guys,

Im not sure where i should post this message, but i thought that this forum was probably the most apt place. As I am waiting for my dv6tQe to ship, i have heard a couple of unpleasant rumors about the laptop, and i thought i might ask you guys if they are true or not.

-The buttons on the mousepad (idk what exactly its called lol) are extremely loud
-The screen is washed up and very bad.

Could you guys tell me if these rumors are indeed true or not?

    Thanks

The screen isn't great; the first time I turned it on I was immediately a bit upset, but you get used to it over time. The buttons on the touchpad make a noticable clicking noise, but unless the room is completely silent they don't seem terrible. Louder than I would prefer though.

I installed Need For Speed : Hot Pursuit on my dv7 (i7-2630 qm, 8gb ram, GPU 6770m), it runs perfectly. But the only issue is that the area near the vent top left corner) gets very hot after 10 minutes I play even though I choose "Coolest Mode" and have Cooling fan underneath. Is this normal?
Has anyone installed heavy games and played but no heating up?

Thanks for the prompt answer :) When you say that you were upset when you looked at the screen, why do you say that? Is it because the display wasnt sharp? or was it because the overall quality? I am currently on a 1680x1050, and have never had an expierience with a lower res. screen

You should have nothing to worry about. The first dv7 i ordered was fine (no wash out etc) and the one I just recieved seems to be good as well. Maybe not fantastic, but in full disclosure I'm coming from a 5 y/o dv5120 with a 128X800 resolution on a 15.4in monitor, not the 1600x900 17.3.

I will admit that the viewing angle is not great, (much better that the 5120) but I don't look at it from the side anyway.

Finally received my dv7tqe today, originally ordered on March 27th. I returned the previous gen dv6tse to get the new upgrades. While I liked the silver aluminum look and feel from the previous gen, I gotta say when I opened this dv7tqe up, the look is very striking. I think it looks very classy compared to the previous version. If it had backlit kb, then it would be perfect.

Quick question....did others receive their new dv6tqe or dv7tqe with plastic film covering the screen bezel and keyboard keys outline?

My previous gen dv6tse was shipped that way. I just want to make sure I didn't receive a used laptop from HP.

It's fairly sharp, but the poor viewing angle/lackluster color make it a bit unexpected for a laptop that otherwise looks stunning. But it serves it's purpose, and in reality it isn't awful. What was most concerning was when my mother saw the screen for the first time and said "the colors aren't so great huh?"...so it's a tad noticable. But like I said, it grows on you and by the next day I had adapted.

I have received my HP dv6tqe on 04/28 and its just the same. no plastic wraps on it, i was so disappointed the way the new laptop was sent. I did even argue with customer support that I am not sure whether i have received the new laptop or not? They gave me $20 off i mean credit back.
I'm surprised to see how can they send a new laptop like that?

Did anyone notice that the truevision hd webcam is not that efficient with low light conditions as that of hp dv6t (once upon dv6t se, atleast 4 months back i guess which has hp truevision cam) i have compared it with my friend who bought it with customized config with i5. But it was not quad management processor. Thats nothing to do with the cam.

The hd cam supposed to be with better quality but a lot of distrasion in the movements while streaming or recording. But using the hp truevision cam its crystal clear no shaking in the picture and very fast, we did check the frames per sec is same on both cam settings and rest everything is same but still, it sucks with hd cam.

one more thing i have noticed is, in his laptop the emote icons software like avatar is free of cost and in my hpdv6tqe latest one is lower version and youcam 4.0 is having it with $20 extra to buy online to download that version.

i did download youcam4 trial version, still the cam quality is not improved. i will have to have a chat with tech support, i did buy this hp laptop after seeing this webcam quality on my friend's laptop.

I have recorded a small video by keeping both of them next to each other and with the cam windows open.
if any body have worked on this issue, please help me.

    Thanks in advance.
