It is part of the Synaptic Palm Check option. It is so you don't move the pointer while typing. Go into the synaptic control panel and disable the Palm Check. You can get to it by double clicking on the Synaptic Icon in the Notifications Area (Bottom right corner) ---> Device Settings Tab ---> Settings ---> double click on PalmCheck-Enhanced ACM ---> then disable it.

I have the 6770m... maybe i was expecting a more crisp playing experience like my xbox 360.....
-
Anyone else think it's time to start a dv6t/dv7t FAQ? There are a ton of repeat questions in here.
-
The 6770m can deliver games better than the Xbox in a lot of scenarios (depending on Game! On DirectX version, whether it scales the game up)
For Example I have played Modern Warfare (1) on both. With the 360, you can't choose settings (only resolution, indirectly of course) so the maximum it can push was a baseline for me.
Then I played it on the PC, where there are a lot more settings, and it is insane how much better it looks! Things like dynamic lighting and particles were icing on the cake.
I think (and I don't know for sure so if anyone can correct me please do so, as this thing is so hard to search for online) that the 360 actually reduces some settings when playing in 1080p especially to get 60FPS + or maybe keeping game at 720p and upscaleing it.
What I noticed on the map overgrown (my favorite) is that if one was to lay in the grass, I could see then more easily on the 360 version where as if they were to prone in grass on PC just because of the massive amount of detail it is so much harder to see them.
By the way, I played both on the same monitor at 720p and switched between the PC and the 360 to see the differences and as I mentioned above the PC owns.
I am NOT a console Hater, in fact there are positives to consoles that I love. But I am a graphics junkie and whatever looks better, I will prefer. -
Still patiently (???) waiting for my dv6tqe.
Just thinking...does anyone know how many concurrent devices can be supported by bluetooth on this laptop? -
thanks

I previously posted about not getting the option in BIOS(F.06) to enable Virtualization. So, yesterday I asked about it in HP Chat Support and I was astonished by their reply "If it is not present in BIOS, you can not enable it".
I saw a video on YouTube where in the BIOS(F.06), there was option for enabling Virtualization but it was having i7-2720qm CPU.
Does anybody here having i7-2630qm CPU, got the option for enabling Virtualization in BIOS(F.06) ? -
Anyone got a spare second hdd cable to send to germany?
I'd rather pay one of you guys money than stick 45$+ up HP's as_s for a stupid cable. -
This is so irritating. I wanted that option very badly as I use VMware. Worst thing is that the i7-2630QM supports VT-x instruction set and we cant make use of it. Looks like HP only has virtualization enabling option in BIOS for processors i7-2720QM and above. Is it because they have both VT-x as well as VT-d support?
My understanding was that if the processor supports virtualization (even if only VT-x is supported) then the option should be there in the BIOS to enable it or disable it. I think disable is used for security reasons.
Hey another question. The option to enable/disable virtualization is not present in the BIOS. But does that mean that HP has disabled virtualization by default? Is that assumption correct?
I think VMware shows availability of VT-x support (if present). -
I have the Virtualization (in like the 4th BIOS menu)
dv7t
Bios Version F.06
Bios ???: Insyde
6gb ram
Windows 7 Ultimate
2 hdd installed
(listing anything that I think might affect whether you have virtualization as an option) -

The vast majority of games are rendered in 720p or lower.
The image is scaled up to 1080p for fullHD displays.
So set your resolution to 1280x720 and reduce your quality settings to minimum to get the "true" Xbox 360 experience. -
The virtualization setting is present on my dv7tqe with the F.05 bios and i7-2630qm. It's really stupid that HP would remove that setting from the new bios, but I'm not surprised, HP does dumb things all the time. I think I'll stick with the bios I have for now, until they sort all this out.
-
hi,
I have just found that link online and thought that it would help you. But not tested it in person.
but I am going to apply on my m/c and will let you know. I'm sorry, I should have added this msg on that. I'm newbie, lil enthusiastic to pass a helping hand. But, I will get back to with my experince soon by eob.
thanks. -
i have it with the F.06 bios, dv7t 2630qm
-
So, dv7's are having the option in BIOS F.05 and F.06. I am wondering why it is not present in dv6. I don't know what HP has done to the BIOS of dv6. I hope HP implements that option in the next BIOS upgrade. I am badly in need of it.
I wanted to use Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC. For that, I used Microsoft's Hardware Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool and it reported that the processor supports it but is not enabled in BIOS. So, we are very much out of luck. Even, if HP would have enabled it in factory and then not giving the option to change it in BIOS, I would have been happy.
Does any member here with dv6 and i7-2630qm have the option of virtualization in BIOS by chance or by luck ? -
For whatever it's worth in this discussion my dv7tqe with F0.7 bios has the option.
As an additional piece of info: According to Intel's site, while the 2720qm supports VT-d, the HM65 chipset does not. See Compare Intel® Products -
I know it doesn't equate to hardware virtualization, but I just wanted to be sure you are aware that XP Mode no longer requires hardware virtualization.
-
My DV6 def has VT-X support. You need to realize though that even if it didnt its gonna virtualize very well unless your running a distributed environment.
The screen on this thing keeps getting me though. its so bad. Really wondering if I should have gone with the XPS15 with the RGB screen. -
how do you have a F.07 bios? i only see a F.06 on the website
Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv7t-6000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) -
good analysis. yeah the problem might just be limited to the dv6t
-
I have a dv6 w virtualization in bios
-
I THINK the point is that if you upgrade your BIOS to F.06, you may experience something different...
-
Yes, I am aware that XP Mode can run without hardware virtualization after the SP1 update. But, it will be better to have hardware virtualization enabled. I just noticed that virtualization is disabled (and can not be enabled in BIOS) when I run the virtualization detection tool before installing the XP Mode.
-
I think he is having the virtualization option in BIOS maybe because of i7-2720qm which supports both VT-x and VT-d. Maybe HP has set the BIOS to show the option if i7-2720qm or higher CPU is present.
-
No --- I HAVE a 2720(Dv7) and just rebooted (to check AGAIN) BEFORE I posted... the Virtualation option went away with F.06 (03/10/2011)
... unless you can prove otherwise... it might just always default to ON now ... I don't know ... -
HP doesn't always update their site with the latest.
It be there in a couple of months.
-
I just received my dv7 two days ago on Monday (shipped 4/22) [with that bios]. The date of the bios is 3/31/2011.
-
I think if HP has removed the option to enable/disable h/w virtualization in the BIOS, then they will DISABLE h/w virtualization to be on safer side. Disabling h/w virtualization is done for security reasons I think.
-
Would you mind doing a review or giving us what your perceptions of the laptop are? -
I guess you are talking about :

and this file:

but in the .html file, dv6t isn't listed, so how does it work for you?

Ugh, don't post random things. I said before HP doesn't always post the latest or in the correct section either.

Maybe it is just me, but the Windows update (not HP update) installed some new drivers for the 6770 and the resolution improved significantly for me. The least of which was getting rid of the graininess on the screen and the diagonal striations on the screen.
-
You can check with this Microsoft HAV Detection Tool to be sure of whether virtualization is enabled or disabled.
-
Thanks, that should help ... What I want to discourage, is incomplete postings, that sooner or later is gonna cause somebody a lot of grieve. This isn't intentionally directed at you, but EVERYBODY ... if you bother to post some definitive statement, make sure you document model/version, BIOS rev/date, CPU, GPU.
Thanks!
And you are CORRECT ... it reports that it is NOT enabled [dv7|6000|2720|6770m|F.06|03/10/2011] -
As of when was this update available ? I haven't used my notebook for about three days now. Thanks
-
Only 2 days ago for me.
-
Great. Ill have to check for the update tonight. I am about to return the notebook due to the poor screen
-
Good to hear. I saw it available, but didn't apply it as I wasn't sure about compatibility with switchable graphics. I assume that still works?
Nice to hear that it made screen look better. For the most part I don't mind it, but wish there was a way to tweek the contrast rather than just brightness.
Tx for the info! -
if you really cared about it so much...
1) right click on your desktop
2) select Catalyst Control Center
3) click on My Built-in Displays on the left
4) select Display Color (Built-in Display)
5) adjust the Saturation or Contrast slider according to what you prefer (mine is set at 120/100 respectively). -
Can we downgrade de BIOS to the previous version so that it can enable the VT thru startup settings?

The update says - ATI Technologies Inc. Display software update released in April, 2011. Was going to check this update out but Windows Update keeps giving me an error. I tried installing the update over 6 times, even after a fresh reboot. The error details:
Windows Update error 80070103
If you receive Windows Update error 80070103 while installing updates, you might be trying to install a driver that is already installed on your computer or a driver that has a lower compatibility rating than one you already have installed.
Lovely. -
Never occurred to me to check the CCC! I was looking under the windows prefs. Tx!

Be happy to tell you what I can so far after a limited time (2 days) with it. My specs are as follows:
HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition
- Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- i7-2720QM
- 1GB Radeon(TM) HD 6770M GDDR5 Graphics
- FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory
- 1.5TB 5400RPM Dual Hard Drive (750GB x 2) [not my first choice]
- FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security [Uninstalled first thing]
- One 6-Cell and One 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
- 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)
- FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
- HP TrueVision HD Webcam/Microphone/Fingerprint Reader
- Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
- BIOS F0.7 3/31/2011
- Hard Drives: Hitachi HTS547575A9E384
- RAM: Slot #1 - 2g DDR3 1333 / PC3-10700 Hyundai
Slot #2 - 4g DDR3 1333 /PC3-10700 Micron
Impressions:
- Color & appearance are very good; better than aluminum look in my opinion. But fingerprints show everywhere.
- Fit & fitness are good. I see no unreasonable gaps around the edges between case sections as someone else previously noted.
- Access panel (for drives, memory, etc.) is a joke. Extremely flimsy with 14 very fragile clips of several sizes. The clips point in two directions, some to the front of the notebook and some to the back. Broke one the first time I opened it.
- Screen looks great to me: good brightness & color, viewing angle, etc. Too me, it compares very well to my ASUS and Viewsonic LCD desktop displays.
- So far, I hear little fan noise, even when it's running. I'm not a gamer, so I have only noted it running while doing extended partition imaging to disk and while copying same files to a USB2 external drive. Palm rest never got warm, but again, I'm not gaming or really taxing the processor yet.
- Keyboard is fine. Feel is good when typing. I notice no flexing even around the cursor keys where others have reported it.
- Trackpad also good. Button clicks are audible but not overly so. I like the feedback it provides (though admittedly, I seldom use the left button preferrng to use the pad tap instead). Personally, I don't like 2-finger scrolling so turned it off and went back to 1-finger. What I DON'T like is the "sharp" notebook edge. I find the heel of my "trackpad" hand rests directly on this "edge" when using the notebook off-desk and it soon become uncomfortable. Maybe I'll get used to it or learn to adjust how I rest my hand.
- Position of drive activity light on side of notebook makes no sense.
- 9-cell battery positions the notebook quite well for airflow (there are vents on the bottom) and typing. But it's heavy when off-desk and on the "lap."
Other:
As shown above, my configuration included the FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray. After reading an exchange between 'Jerohm' and 'Fizzix' in the order status thread, I did some exploring and found that my unit also supports Lightscribe even though I didn't pay for it (thank you HP). I might suggest that others check the model of their Blu-ray. Mine, as shown in device manager is 'BDDVDRW CT30L' with 'XC05' firmware. The Cyberlink labeling software shipped with the dv7 apparently doesn't support Lightscribe and thus shows no indication of the drive's capability. I installed a copy of Nero 9 Essentials I happened to have and was successfully able to burn a Lightscribe label.
That's all I have for now. I'll update as I find more that might be of interest. -
If you look under recently installed updates it should say that the ATI drivers installed but the Intel drivers failed, I guess its a 2 part update. I tried playing mass effect 2 after that update and noticed distorted graphics so I rolled back to old driver. I think it has something to do with swicthable graphics not being supported yet. Also if you go to amds website our graphics card is not listed as being supported by that update. I didn't try and see if swicthable graphics worked after update, maybe someone thats updated could test.
-
I updated the ATI driver through windows update. Graphic switching still works. However, when installing the drivers, ATI will install fine, but the Intel graphic driver update will fail because it's already been installed through HP update.
-
Thanks for confirming that switching works. I just tried the update again and still get distortion when panning around playing mass effect 2, everything else seems fine, even the display looks a little crisper. I don't have any other games at the moment to test but as soon as I get some I'm anxious to see if the update plays nice.

I just ran the HAV tool and it says "This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization

did you receive your computer w/ F.07 ALREADY installed... I ASSUME???

2. Looked around and created Recovery DVDs
3. Installed SSD drive
4. In the process of clean install of the Windows 7 OS.
