I'm thinking about canceling my order and reordering it with the 1080p screen. The only change I would make on the below specs would be the screen, and it would be $110 more to make the change. Do you guys think it is worth doing?

I just saw this review...

Does the dv6t quad edition throttle(cpu multi drops) with Prime95 + Furmark with the following configuration?
Core i7 2630qm
ATI 6770m
My previous SXPS 1645 throttled with the 720qm and 4670. I dont want a similar experience. -
They didn't have the option of the 1080p screen when I ordered my DV7T Quad. I received my laptop less than a month ago. If I was you I would upgrade to the 1080p screen. Alot of people have returned their laptops and went with the Dell XPS 17 to get a 1080p screen. I still think the 1600 x 900 screen is not bad but would have got the 1080p if it was a option for me. I wonder if the design of your laptop is different than the umber color one I received. -
If you are a college student, you might want to hold off purchasing a computer starting on May 23.
You get a free xbox 360 from Microsoft with a purchase of a windows pc valued over $699.

Gotta love Microsoft
They give away alot of free stuff to students from hardware to software. -
Falco beat me to it, but anyway:
Looks like Microsoft is giving out free xbox 360s with the purchase of a new $699+ laptop from 5/23 - 9/3 and HP.com is participating. I just ordered a new dv6 yesterday, I wonder if I can complain to HP Customer Service and get a free 360. Anybody have any input on this?

Very good question...
There is a lot of talk about this on the Envy thread....but I have not seen much talk about it here. Being that both computers use the same 2630 CPU...I do wonder if it is happening.
I tried to run the test on my computer at home but could never get one of the progarms to start. -
-
Well
I've been playing everyday and haven't noticed any throttling at all.
I once played bulletstorm for 5 hours straight, and everything was still smooth. When I had quit, there was 0 lag going back to windows desktop as well.
Although the palmrest gets a bit warm, but the ventilation is very good. (better not put anything on the left of the laptop beside the vent, or it'll probably melt...)
I used to have a XPS M1330, and i know how bad throttling can get. I haven't experience any yet with my dv6tqe -
Damn I just ordered yesterday too so no xbox 360 for me, I would just sell it on ebay since I already own one, for an extra discount anyway lol. You better believe if the 30 percent is still up on the 22nd that I will be cancelling and reordering with my student email for a 360 on top of the deal. Sounds freaking sweet to me.
Also has anyone else gotten word on what the gamut rating is on the new 1080p screen. I chatted with an HP rep today but they were totally not knowledgeable at all. I know another forum member said that on the phone a rep told him 95% but I would like to know if anyone else has gotten similar results -
Online chat agents are claiming that HP has nothing to do with this promotion...I WANT A DAMN XBOX!!!
-
How much of a difference will it really make between the 1080p screen and the one right below that one if you're only sitting a foot or two away from the 17.3'' screen?
The one I'm working on right now is an old 15'', 1024 x 768, so just about anything would be better for me. -
If someone can get the part number for the display, it will likely give you an idea of performance, since I'm sure other manufacturers are using it.
Rather than going by HP's word, I'll do a true display calibration, since I have the necessary hardware/software (referenced i1D2 colorimeter and Spectracal Calman) that I use to calibrate all of my displays and my home theater. I'll be sure to post accuracy reports and impressions when I take delivery.
Good deal on the 360! You think if I started an "Old School" type fraternity that I'd qualify? -
-
If someone can be so kind to check this. If the dv7tQE bios supports restarting the computer without asking for the password again? For example, on Dells, if you use a bios password (not in Windows), and then do a "reboot", it won't ask for the password again. Only asks when cold starting. I find this very very helpful, especially if I'm remotely doing updates and require a reboot.

The free xbox deal for students is great for me! I've been waiting and looking for a great opportunity like a Jedi. I'm happy I didn't go for the overpriced MBP or pretty M14x.
I hope the free xbox 360 deal works with the dv6t + 30% coupon. I hate all these restrictions.. -
I seriously hope there is NOT a 30% off coupon with this promotion. Just because I've already ordered and canceled twice now...and think HP will just decline my business if I keep doing this to them.
They should offer something as an alternative for students who decided to be proactive and order their computer a week before this promotion starts. -
-
I believe the promotion is run by Microsoft, so you probably have to give Microsoft proof that you're a student, as well as the receipt of the laptop/email of the receipt with the purchase date on it. I don't think HP has any say in this matter. Also, I think that the 30% off coupon expires tomorrow/end of tomorrow, but I could be wrong.
-
EDIT: Also, from the Microsoft website:
"To take advantage of this offer, students or parents must provide valid student identification as defined by the participating retailer."
- sounds like something controlled by HP... -
I know could you imagine this deal, and then a xbox 360 on top, freaking awesome man. It will go on craigslist for 175 no problem. Or ebay or you can keep the damn thing if you dont already have one. And considering I dug real deep into my pockets to get the laptop I could really use some money back.
-
We'll see come Sunday/Monday if the folks over at HP know anything yet...perhaps by then I can still cancel my order and re-order and hassle em into giving me the 30% coupon...after all, the customer is always right...right?
-
-
I talked to the sales rep just now, and she told me that she thought they might be able to make something work for the promotion...since the stupid laptop is taking a month to ship they should just use that as a qualifier...or delay my payment or something!
We'll see. She said they can't do anything for me and to call back when the promotion becomes available.
You can be sure they'll be hearing from me first thing 5/23!! -
So if you cancel within 24 hours of order, its actually really easy. They approve the cancellation usually before the end of the 24 hrs (since order). It does take a bit of time for the credit to your card, but I have a large enough credit line that it doesn't really matter to me so long as its gone in a week.
Canceling at 5 days is a bit harder...In that case, the sales rep lied to me and told me that if I cancel I won't get the 30% again...then gave me a hard time about even trying to cancel it and trying to tell me that "Didn't you read that you can't make a change to your order after you placed it!". Finally, I canceled and she told me that it wasn't guaranteed and I might still get it at my door at which point I need to request an RMA.
It was actually someone in this thread who suggested the "RTS" which is a return to sender flag on your order. Basically, if the factory can't cancel it before being produced, they'll intercept the order before it gets to you and send it to their warehouse. This is a bigger deal, as you have to wait until it gets produced...then received at the warehouse...and then wait to finally get a refund on your card. Overall, an ok experience, but definitely not preferable. -

I believe someone posted in this thread that it was possible to combine the 30% coupon (or any coupons for that matter) and the EPP (Employee Purchase Program) discounts once you sign in.
Does anyone know how to do this? -
I tried and it failed every time... Said the coupon code didn't apply with the EPP. It'd be nice if it did. I also tried with a student discount...also no dice.
-
just got back from an online chat with an HP sales agent. She offered me another $100 to NOT cancel the order i placed today and reminded me that the 30% coupon may not be stackable with the XBOX promotion, but she wasn't sure. I took the $100. Truth is, I'm headed to med school in the fall and the XBOX, while nice, would prob be a bad idea.
-
-
PS. Where's the link to the online chat. I think I'd like that better than by phone.
EDIT: I think I have the link to a chat...trying for the $100 -
-
I'm going to head to dinner now, I will give you the flow of the conversation afterwards so you can try to get the extra $100 off as well.
-
no problem! I'm not sure if I'm doing a good job at this. She seems rather clueless, although she did say this:
Edit: She seemed to have no qualms referring me to the Resolutions department for a cancellation. I think HP is tired of me. Either her hands were tied...she knew I was gunning for a bigger discount, or she genuinely wanted me to have the xbox 360. So...no dice. Then she tried to sell me a printer. Ok, HP. Thanks -
There is a DIFFERENT thread for the discussion of order status ... and I think they are pretty lonely over there ....
-
Ok, I will PM the guys who requested the chat log
-
-
If anyone else wants the chatlog please post here or PM me and I will gladly send it

Is that the same screen that would be on the new dv7t 1080p screen?

This is the second time I ordered a matte view guard for my laptop. The company has great customer service and the packaging is amazing. I remember the CEO actually visits these forums once in a while (saw his post in the EEE PC forum). -
Thanks samrock67, while I wasn't able to get the $100 credit, I did get them to give me $50 credit at least.
-
Shoot! How do you guys get people to give you these discounts. Maybe because I canceled twice they hate me!
I even paraphrased some of what samrock said. Still they are quite eager to just let me cancel and re-order on 5/22. Thanks a lot HP. -
Can I get a copy of the chat as well? Thank you!
-
I tried chat and calling with no love sadly =(
-
Honestly, I chatted a couple times today until someone knew about the promo. Either that or they just gave me $100 to shut up
