ok, i have installed a clean version of Win 7 Ultimate and everything is fine do far. Some questions i have: 1) How do you get the volume indicator back on the screen when you swipe your finger across the volume sensor (is it an HP thing?) 2) I've installed ALL the drivers that i know i need (my pc needs) from HP.com and i still have this "unkown device" in device manager, any ideas?
-
-
well on my drive it indeed* says "lightscribe"... lmao. i didnt even pay 4 it
-
Trust Me, The first time you decide to buy Lightscribe Discs, you will have paid HP for it (Since they own the format.)
-
@mj_mahyar14, for having that on-screen display volume indicator you need to have hp quicklaunchbutton and mediasmart software installed which I don't recommend. All of them are bloatware, all of the touch buttons work without any special software. You only need official audio driver for mute button color-change work. If you want a volume indicator on screen I suggest you to use a little program called 3rvx. It looks a lot better than the hp one and won't minimize your fullscreen apps like the hp one does and gives you lots of option to personalize and it's free.
You can download it from link below, if you had any problems with it feel free to pm me.

Hey, it says lightscribe on the side of my drive!
That's a surprise... -
Thanks for the info. I installed it, works GREAT! better than the HP one! I LOVE the Apple style volume indicator!
-
lmao. did u even pay for it? i did NOT*
-
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
The silver bezel on my dvd-rw does not say Lightscribe , though my model spec on the hp website and nero info tool say that it does have it.
-
Hmm, everybody who didn't pay for lightscribe had the label on the side of their drive, and now you don't have it...
Maybe the people who didn't pay have the lightscribe labelling, but not the actual lightscribe compatibility? I dunno, this is getting weird...
Has anyone who didn't buy the lightscribe tried using it?
Anyways, It says lightscribe on my drive and I didn't pay for it. -
My drive doesn't have a lightscribe logo on thr front but imgburn says it does support it, hp website says the same, anyway Do you guys use this lightscribe nonsense? I think it is very pointless in this day and age and more like a marketing thing.
-
I would also like to know how I can test Turbo Boost for my I7 so I know it does work before my 21 days are up. How did you guys test the turbo boost?
-
Yeah, I bet nobody's really going to use that kind of stuff. It's extremely pointless, and I wouldn't pay extra just to get it specifically. It does have some limited uses. For example, I'm making a little homemade game as a project to help me learn C++, and I might use the lightscribe when I'm finished just to make the CD a bit prettier, but there's really no reason that any normal user would have any reason to use lightscribe.
But, whatever, we get the lightscribe for free anyways. Might as well play around with it since I have it. -
i installed BatteryBar so I could see the lifetime of my battery and under the "Full Lifetime" category it always says "Calculating..." and never displays and actual time. Also, my battery wear is displayed as 3.4%, is this normal for a brand new battery? How do i get it to display the time remaining?
-
I think you need to keep the adapter unplugged for a bit, so that it can calculate how long your battery's going to last based on how fast it's going down. Just unplug the laptop and let the thing calculate for a bit.
My battery wear is around 2.2%. I think that should be normal. -
ok, i see. i says that i willl get 1 hr 30 min with the High Capacity 6 cell and thats when im copying my music from an external HDD to the laptop, wifi on, and the brightness about 30-35 %
-
I have the same battery and the wear indicator says 3.3%, so I would say that 3.4 is not out of spec, also battery bar takes a couple of discharge/charge cycle to calibrate itself.
-
ok, good to know. how many hours of battery do you get when idling (using microsoft word, web surfing, ect.) ?
-
thats sweet ,just picked mine up today but the wife says i have to wait until Christmas.Women
So is the bios update worth it? -
is anyone's keyboard matte* not glossy??
-
Heh, sorry for the late reply, I was too lazy to look through all of the other posts before. Miladesn provided a monitor for the turboboost clock speed a bit ago:
To raise the turboboost, I think you can just run any rather intensive programs on the laptop and you'll see a change. I remember Ramzii posted a burn test back a few pages:
If you don't like the program, you can try any CPU testing software, just search up google for a CPU test, and you'll find some, like Passmark or Prime95. Just make sure that you be careful when using these, because I hear that these tests make your CPU overheat extremely quickly. Then again, you can just forget about using the tests altogether and test it with another program, like a game or anything else that might be heavy on the CPU.
Just use The Turbo Boost Monitor that miladesn provided, and I bet you'll see something, whether you do a burn test or not.
Just remember to have your power profile on 'High Performance' and also have the power adapter plugged in, just to make sure that the turbo boost can turn on.
Well, by the time I'm posting this, I bet you already found an answer anyways... -
Yp. Mine's keyboard is matte vs the touchpad is glossy. Hate anything glossy.
TurboBoost - I see mine going as high as 3GHz, though only when running single threaded apps. When I use wPrime, nothing happens -
Yeah, I think the quad version for the dv6t is matte. It's a good thing, I dislike the glossy keys.
It's a step up from glossy, but they have yet to give us a backlit keyboard
-
Yes, I believe TurboBoost has a more dramatic change when in a single core. If I remember correctly, it stays around 1.6 GHz when all of the cores are working, but it can go up to the advertised 2.8GHz when only one core is working.
EDIT: Yeah, I found this from Here:
Basically, to keep the processor under limitations of heat and energy consumption, it can either put all of the energy it's allowed to have onto a single core, or distribute it among the four cores, drastically lowering the clock speed. That lets us boost the cores that we really need, for maximum performance.
So the 1.6GHz is assuming that all cores are active, and 2.8GHz is assuming that only one core is active. -
Is it normal that when I first start the system, the fans go very loud and then after 2 seconds, it goes back to normal? This did not happen when I first booted up the computer when I got it. It happens now that I had updated the BIOS to F.13
-
I have my laptop with the original BIOS and everything, and it does that. I think my (dad's) old ThinkPad did that too. It's probably a normal thing for any laptop, and you shouldn't worry about it.

Now that I have less than 17 days to test out my laptop to see if I want to keep it or not, What are some good programs that use a lot of CPU and makes the system use the processor to the max? Thanks. I don't play much games, so hopefully my choice will be made up by the end of day 16.

ok announcment.. bad news guys, absolutly PREVENT your LCD laptop screen from being exposed to any sub zero temperatures. i thought it would be nice, since im out in the alps and stuff, have a coffee, outside, and talk to my friends on facebook, after about 30 minutes, i have a decent chunk of my screen that because de-illuminated, unresponsive. i later brought my laptop into my room, and let it sit there while i went out to do my thing. i come back, i have the dreaded LCD leaks. apparently i burst the membranes on my screen with the temperatures. so avoid doing that at all costs, thank god i have the accidental care package, so when i get back, im swappin it in, i have a external monitor for now that im using and its ok.
-
I wouldn't recommend actually TRYING to look for processor-heavy programs. It wouldn't really matter how fast a program runs if you're never going to use it.
Just do everything that you normally do every day, and see how the CPU handles it. If you REALLY want to test out the processor's power, you can try doing some simple things, instead of downloading random programs that you'll never use. I recommend doing things like opening up multiple windows and multiple programs to check out the multitasking, and doing things that make use of your processor, no matter how fast your CPU is.
For example, you can try converting a movie to some other format, which will definitely make good use of your CPU, and then do your normal daily things and see how well your notebook runs.
If you really want to test out the CPU's power with some kind of advanced program, I think you could play around with Photoshop, and maybe some video/audio conversion tools. Try comparing your speeds with these programs with your old computer/notebook and see how well your new notebook does. You can also run some kind of a CPU test and compare its scores with your old computer/notebook.
Good luck testing! -
Uh-oh...
Seems like this is good advice for any LCD screen. It's good that you had the care package. I don't, so I have to remember to be careful

i think they have HP has either sent me the wrong battery or they are charging people more for the "High Capacity 6 Cell" and giving them the normal 6 cell. I recieved the EV06 and it is rated at 55Whr. I did some research on google and found out that these people had ordered the same "High Capacity" and had recieved the normal EV06 battery. Anyone here with the EV06 as the "High capacity" or do you all have it as the normal 6 cell?
-
Hey, I want to have one more usable partition in order to back up my files before format C Drive and install a clean copy of Windows 7. However, it appeared that HP used all 4 partitions so i cannot create one more. Any ideas?
-
Hmmm... I've looked around and I've figured that there can only be 4 primary partitions, but one of those partitions can be an "Extended Partition" which can be split into multiple logical drives. Since HP is using all of your partitions, I suggest deleting one if you can(What's in each of them? Can you tell? If it's important, back it up and then clear.), and making one an Extended partition using a tool such as this. I believe that the extended partition should then be able to be split into smaller pieces.
Source. Just gotta look around. Post if there's a problem with this solution, because I don't really know much about this partition type stuff (Hey, just learned about it 5 minutes ago!). -
The EV06 is definitely the normal 6-cell battery. You should call HP and have them refund THE WHOLE COST. It's their fault anyways, and you shouldn't let them leave you with just a few bucks. And if they ask you to return the whole laptop, just tell them that you can only send in the battery.
I think that the problem with this is because they don't sell the High Capacity 6 cell batteries for the dv6t individually, just the EV06. The EV06 is here(overpriced way more than $50 above what you can get outside, just to mock us who have the coupon), but the High-Capacity is nowhere in the store, so it's hard to prove that the EV06 isn't the high-capacity. However, there's obviously no way that two completely different batteries can be the same model number, so the EV06 IS NOT the High-Capacity.
I'd also like to see if anybody else is getting the EV06 when they ordered the High-Capacity battery. If they are, we need to fix this whole thing. Somehow. -
Give folding (distributed networking, Stanford project) a try--two SMP instances will lock up all 4 cpu cores at 100%, and you'll also be able to run a GPU instance, keeping your graphics card at 100% as well. Anytime I'm looking to test the stability of a new PC build, I have the thing folding for a few days--just about the best benchmarking you can do, and it has its benefits--all that number crunching goes toward cancer research. It's a bit of a pain to setup, but it's a lot easier than it once was. Google it--it's right on the Stanford website.
Really? You actually like the matte keys? Enjoy your "shiny key syndrome". After a good 5-10 hours of regular use, your keyboard is going to begin showing some wear. I'm probably just anal about it, but I can't stand half-worn keys. Absolutely gross. At least with gloss keys, there's a CHANCE it won't look horrible after several months of regular use. This isn't oil we're talking about--regular friction-wear will shine up even the best matte keys... eventually. At least the moonlight white option makes it difficult to see the wear. -
I too ordered a High capacity battery only to receive the EV06 55Wh. Everything that I have read said that HP required you to ship back your entire laptop to exchange the batterie.
-
55Whr is the High Capacity 6-Cell the normal 6-cell is 44Whr. Which is how they get the 16% additional power (Even though my fuzzy logic math says 20%.)
-
But when i research EV06 on ebay or google i get it as the normal 6 cell and they are all 55 Whr. Ebay Google Search
-
I have a normal 6-Cell and a 12-cell and the normal 6-cell reads 43,891 WHr (minus battery wear.)
Do you have Battery Bar Pro Loaded? Check to see what the specs are on the battery and report back. -
really? i contacted HP and told them about it and they said that they are going to ship me a high capacity 6 cell battery. i even told them that the one i have is a EV06 55 Whr. I don't know, I could be wrong or they just might not know.
-
Might be a bad deal for anyone who is interested in this laptop.

Buy from Costco, get 2 years warranty + 90 days return policy. -
That's normal price--not good, aside from costcos additional year inhouse warranty. HP seems to regularly have coupons that put this in the low-$800 range, with the exact same configuration. Purchasing an additional manufacturer warranty (which stacks with 1year CC warranties for AmEX and Visa) will STILL put you under the Costco price.
Heck, I got my DV8t for $920 flat with a basic 2-year warranty. There are REAL deals to be had out there. There's no point in settling for retail price, especially when HP pumps out coupon codes like the Treasury prints out money. -
Yes, for some reason, only 4 primary partitions are allowed. You can however, create a logical partition using Windows 7 disk partition tool and then install a fresh copy on one of the primary partitions.
-
Can somebody else PLEASE confirm this?? PLEASE, I don't want to get cheated by HP. So did everyone that ordered a High capacity 6 cell recieve a 55 Whr and the ones that ordered a normal 6 cell recieve a 44 Whr?
-
Is it normal that I only feel air coming out from the left side and not the right side?
-
yes. the left side is only where the vents are.
-
Also, Can I use the webcam for messenger even though I uninstalled HP Mediasmart webcam?
-
you should be able to IF the webcam drivers are installed
-
Confirmed. Check by HW Monitor & Batterbar Pro.
-
So, what did you have? The 55 Whr or 44 Whr? Did you order the normal 6 cell or the High Capacity 6 cell?
-
I have the normal one and this pretty much sums it up:
