I've had my dv6t quad for about a month now, and I'm enjoying it, but I have a few issues I was wondering if anybody had these problems or knew anything:

First of all, Windows backup does not work. It freezes at 25% every time. HP backup works fine, and the disk drive seems fine. Anybody else heard of this?

Second, when I grab the screen to close the computer (gently of course) from behind the webcam, the framing seems to detach from the display itself resulting in a clicking noise, I assume from the display bumping into the framing in the back. It sounds like the framing is glued to the display and is becoming detached when I apply pressure. This only happens when I grab from behind the webcam which is working fine. Again, don't know what I should do about this.

Other than this, its a great PC. Incredibly powerful

I use Windows Home Server for backups and have had no issues with backing the machine up.

My systems has the same issue with the screen, clicking near the webcam when closing the screen. I even went to Fr's Electronics and the display model does the same thing. So at this point I am not to worried about it, except it does make the system feel cheap and not well put together.

How do you guys think this laptop compares to the dv6t quad http://www.powernotebooks.com/configure.php?special=706.

I got a dv6t back in december, but it had a few problems like....flickering screen, broken n button, and a really loose power jack, so I sent it back in. My exchange still isn't here yet, but I am having second thoughts now.

The asus comes with a 5730 video card, but no blu-ray.

I got mine with blu-ray drive and 230m.

The rest of the specs would pretty much be the same.

That def. isnt good if your planning to get a long lifespan.

Do you let the laptop breathe when you stress it?
That means dont put it on your lap en do elevate it with something when on the desk.

Actually the i7-720QM is designed for 100C under max load, so it is ok to see 7x-8x under load.
Try running Furmark and post your temperatures. Then run prime95 and again post them and i will compare them to mine.

but you also must put the components surrounding the CPU into consideration. The CPU would heat up the components as well. Heat is like the #1 killer of laptops. As well, even though the CPU can withstand high temperatures, the GPU is not able to. Long term effects of heat will affect your notebook

Hey Computerstriker, how did your exchange go DV6 to the large 8 ?
Did HP deliver or was it a logistic disaster?

I bet u miss that little sucker dont ya :p

These are core temperature, not external one. From what i know, 84C is not high for a GPU under load while charging.

yeap.... I exchanged my dv6 to get the dv7, then canceled my dv7 to get a dv8 rofl. My dv8t was DOA so I had to exchange it. I'm receiving it in a few days =D And HP's CS is a disaster. They lost my dv8t laptop during the exchange process lol.\
By the way, Ramzii, thanks for remembering me, you stocker rofl!!

I restored to factory settings and the max CPU temp now is down to 75C and the max GPU temp is down to 71C. Both are almost a 10+ drop from the temp i had reported earlier.

Out of a few changes I made, I had installed the latest nvidia driver(195.62) and upgraded the BIOS to F13.A

My guess is that there is smthing with this driver that was causing the high temp. Has anyone tested the driver or faced similar issues with this driver?

I just did a system restore using the recovery manager. I did it because my laptop never used to touch 80C when I had first recieved it.

But what did you change? Did you tweak something so you could get better/.faster results? Are you saying it didnt reach 86°C by itself?

Please be specific so we can prevent ours from reaching that temp. ty

I did not set the power plan to High Performance.

As far as what drove the temprature up, I am really not sure. All I had done as far as settings go was install the latest BIOS, update the NVIDIA driver to 195.62. Apart from that I installed a few softwares and games. Softwares included Visial Basic and C++ express editions. Now unless there are some updates running continuosly for these programs in the background I dont think they can drive up the temp when not in use.

I reset to factory setttings as I did not have the temp problem when I had none of the softwares installed and was on factory settings.

Please take my comments with a pinch of salt as I am not an expert. For reference I have attached the temp readings. These were taken a few mins after I stopped playing Madden 08 for almost an hour. The max temps when I had posted earlier were well into the 80's.

I have a question, about my newly arriving laptop. This is basically a desktop replacement for me that will be located within my entertainment center for removal when needed as a laptop. As such, looking for a docking solution that preferably would:

    - Allow the laptop to be closed while "on" and still output to my HDTV
    - Allow a DVI or HDMI output from the dock versus VGA

Any advice? Looking at HP's applicable docking solution (HP Quickdock - PN: KN744AA#ABA) it looks like both these desires would be an issue/problem.

    Thanks for the guidance . . .

Hello, welcome to the team! And congratz on your purchase iMacman.. (ooh, the irony )

I know squat about dockingstations.. i do know something about a wish of yours.

You can customize the options for the lid. What happens when it closes..
I configured it to do nothing, and keep running as normal.
So when I connect my laptop via HDMI ( didnt quite understand ur other wish) to my 22" tv to watch sweet 1080p rips it plays and displays an awesome resolution! :D sweeeet. Hope this helps¿

NP! You were one of the first to answer a question of mine.
And ive no idea what that means..

But I always use high performace for demanding apps-games, otherwise it feels slow. Could be a mind trick though.. i dont know how to measure lol.

Thats really strange.. I would say the new BIOS is the cause since it has been messing up DV6 7 and ´8s since it came along.

But since you say the temps gone back to normale since the recovery I would believe otherwise. (BIOS upgrades cant be rolled back whatsoever)

    hmmm.. those are perfect temps. But just to be sure;
Madden is a pretty old game, 2007 i believe. Those high reading from before... you got them playing the same game?

Hello..New member here. I was online looking for some help with my system and came across this site.
I have had a DV6T Quad since Dec. 15 of last year and it's been working perfectly....until Tuesday. It kept locking up at random times. I wasn't gaming or doing anything crazy with it. I was checking emails and surfing the web. It would totally lock up and I would have to keep doing a hard re-boot. I called HP tech support and we tried several things. Finally, the technician had me boot it and go into the bios screen and it would even lock up there. After 2 hours of working with him and doing several 'system restores', it just wouldn't stop locking up. So, as much as it pained me, I shipped it back to HP last night for repair. Hopefully they can get it fixed and back to me quickly. I'll report back on what the problem was once they're done with it.

I kept checking the processor temps and they were around 50 - 55 C, so I don't think it was overheating.

    Here's my configuration:
    DV6T Quad
    Core i7-820QM 1.73 Ghz
    4GB DDR3 Memory
    500GB 7200RPM HD
    LightScribe Multi8XDVD
    Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
    Nvidia GeForce FT230M
    6 Cell Battery
    Wireless-G Card

    well ppl!

after less than a month of use, my hitachi hard drive died on me. ofcourse HP is more than happy to replace it but unfortunately now i'm in india. since this model is not available in india, international warranty doesn't cover this. i have to get the hard drive back to USA at some point to get it replaced...good news is i have a year left to do that.
it might not be HP's fault entrirely and could be Hitachi's fault...but when i opened up the hard drive enclosure, i was pretty surprised how unsecurely the hard drive is designed to be sitting in. the bracket is flimsy witj just a black film protecting it and no screws to hold the whole bracket down....you just slide it in...i checked my brother's elite book and it was much better secured.

sux!...i'm not having any luck finding similarly spec'd hard drive in india or in dubai for that matter.

my sager with two hard drive after years of luggng around and going through hundreds of x-ray machine never did this to me...

    just venting! :)

on the positive note, while i had this laptop working, it was absolutely fantastic!

i was working on photoshop, maya and modo and it screamed thru!

I just spoke to HP Tech Support and they said that they did a BIOS upgrade and that it was good as new. Interesting.

I hope that's all it was.

FYI...if anyone ever has to ship your laptop back to HP for warranty repair, they offer an 'expedited service' that will speed up the process. It only costs $15, but you'll get it turned around ASAP. They shipped me a shipping box on Monday (overnight). I shipped it back to them overnight with a shipping label provided by HP. They received it yesterday and according to the technician, it's already on its way back to me today (overnight). 4 total days is pretty good service in my book!

Well, Fedex delivered my repaired laptop around lunch time today. I'm still impressed with the speed at which HP turned it around.

According to the repair ticket that was in the box with it, they replaced the motherboard, updated the bios and re-imaged the hard drive. I've spent all afternoon re-loading software (office, photoshop, etc.). So far, everything seems to be running perfectly. I guess I'll keep it for a while.

Hey! Sorry to hear about your loss man, but could you answer me this:

I imported mine from eBay America to Holland.. and imported products arnt under HP Holland warranty. Where should I go to if something happens?
Contact the eBay guy and pay for the shipping? Hoping that HP USA will deal with it properly?

I was also thinking about getting an American 3 yr Care Pack for it.
But the site says I must be within the USA.. so when I get that, I still need to ship it to the states I think.

    International Coverage blows.

I know!! Nothing beats it.. technology kicksass! Good luck with the replacement man. Are you flying to the States?

Wow, you dont hear that often! Good to know. Could you provide us with a link or method how you ordered the service/box ?

And please do share your HP experience with us @ the link below! :D

System tools will not work on battery. I recommend riva tuner to adjust the clocks.
I used version 195.81 from here.
The clocks capability may vary from one unit to another. Try decreasing them, try using 700/1540 and decrease the memory to 948. If it crashes try decrease the first two but keep the ratio 1/2.2.
At which point did your system crash?

I couldn't get Riva Tuner working. it shows core clock 100MHz and memory 0 Mhz in my GPU gadget (also in GPU-Z, it show very low clock).
Also, I couldn't install the driver 195.81. I used 195.62 from Nvidia website itself.
    any suggestions?

    thanks Ramzii!

some models are covered by international warranty by default in India, but not this one...
i chatted online with the HP customer service and he looked up the s/n and told me that it wont be covered in India. But he would do a door-to-door pickup and drop off service if i could get it to someone in USA.

i still went to HP India and they said the same thing...

i doubt if the ebay guys gonna follow up on issues with products he already sold...best to go straight to HP. they were atleast very helpful and informative.

i always have someone traveling between US and India and will just ship it thru that person. i will just buy a replacement one in Dubai and when i get the HP one, i will just put it inside an eSATA external enclosure and use as an external hard drive or back up device :)

guys im thinking about getting an either dv6t quad or an envy 15 2nd generation?

can u guys compare the two?

    which one performs faster?

    which one runs cooler?

is the ati 5830 so much better than the gt 320m?

what r the pros and cons for the two?

it would be great if someone who used both laptops answers. but im open to any ideas and thoughts. thx

Hey guys, I just got a 30gb OCZ vertex ssd and it turns out that the sata controller on the laptop is limited to sata150 speeds when the pm55 chipset which is in the laptop is supposed to support sata300 speeds. I know that theres nothing wrong with the drive (I tested it with two other computers and it hit 200 mbps average on hd tune).
I just wanted to inform you guys that the laptop was purposely limited to sata150 speeds by HP and to take this into consideration if you guys want to buy a ssd for the laptop. I mean the ssd still performs great (I load up 50 google chrome tabs in under 2 seconds and boot up in 12 seconds) but its still not at its max performance.
Heres a screenshot of an hd tune screenshot of it showing its limited to 150

This looks very similar to the 2119 model sold in Australia. It has less ram and a smaller battery but comes with a bigger hard driver and bluray burner.

Just to tell you, the gt320m is considered a lesser card than the gt230m.
