i have a biometric scanner/fingerprint reader in my quad. it seems to work well with an occasional need to swipe my finger a second time. the placement of the scanner on the other had is something else all together being left handed and all. i find battery life can be a bit sporatic but i think that may be windows and or the bios. this is also proabably a place were having more options in the bios would be helpfull like the ability to turn cores, htt, and turbo boost on or off would be nice. hell just having a acpi compliant bios would be nice i can't handle microsoft and bloatware much longer and tired of being teased by linux in a virtual box.

Returning this. Sent over twenty messages to HP and Insyde and it looks like they won't be fixing the BIOS issues, so there will be no Linux support.

Back to Dell. Sorry HP, I gave you a chance.

I wouldn't take what anyone at HP has to say unless it came from a 2nd or 3rd Tier Hardware/Software Engineer, they would be the one to tell you what HP's true intentions are. The Intel Chipset(Intel PM55) used in these laptops haven't been on the market that long and Linux support will be forthcoming(they are always a little behind), this is not different when Intel Express Chipsets were released and support in Linux was non-existent. You have to remember that these processors have many new features that need to be written into the linux kernel like Intel® Turbo Boost Technology. give it a month or two support will come.

Hey guys, i discovered a problem of the computer, but maybe it just happens to my laptop.

    Problem:
I have 2 external hard disks (both works). I plugged in both of them together, and they show up on the device manager, but only one show up on "My computer". Then I unplug both of them, and then I only plug in the one that didn't show the first time. Then, This time it shows up in "my computer".

So, I think the hard disks are not the problem, it is just the laptop couldn't show both of them in "my computer" at the same time.
By the way, both of my hard disks are from Seagate, one is freeagent desktop and the other one is freeagent go.

Could that be the problem for them to not showing up together?

Is there limits on the "my computer" hard drives area?
Is that because of Window 7? or USB ports problem?

    Can someone help me?

**if you don't understand the problem, I will try to explain it more clear.

    Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I fixed the problem. This is how i get them to work in case someone has the same problem.
    1. click "window", type diskmgmt.msc (this will help you go to disk management page directly.

2.Let the disk management scan for a while, then it should shows all of your hard drives.

    3. Now, there is list of your drives, and below that will have a few bars says DISK 0, DISK 1 and DISK 2, etc

    4. make sure each of them are online. If there is one that says offline, then just click on the offline button, then it will change it back to online.

    5. now, you should be able to see all of hard drives in "my computer".

Does anyone know when HP will release a BIOS update that fixes the infamous thermal/power management problems? Also, is there any way to mod the current BIOS to do a temporary fix until HP comes out with an official update? Thanks!

I just received my unit today and one of the things that I noticed is that the Battery Gauge is not displaying time left, only percentage, is this typical of all Dv6t's?

Yes it is. For some reason HP tends to leave off a time readout in their laptops. They have been doing it for years and I still can't understand why.

Does the dv6t (with core i7) run very hot. Are there any improvements in temperature control? I'm getting one during christmas hopefully. I have a cooler and it'l probably be plugged in most of the time. I run CPU intensive tasks like 3DSMax, SketchUp, Maya, CAD, etc. Wondering if it'll overheat and fry itself to the point where it cant be used. Most of my friends have an HP notebook and they all seem to complain about the heat. I previously owned only Dell's. But have a 2 year old HP (dv600 i think? not sure about model.). Its just used for browsing, chating & check mails & ocasionally watching movies. So its not pused to its limits. All i know is that it does get pretty hot sometimes, but its working great so far. Hoping this dv6t might have better temps.
    Any input appreciated.

    Cheers.

I recieved my dv6t quad yesterday, but had to ship it back. There was a giant hole in the side of the box when FedEx dropped it off. What ever punctured the box actually broke part of the RAM compartment and tore a hole in the metal screen above the ram. I called HP and they had me send it back and they will ship me a new one. The HP service was great, though the estimated build date for the laptop is December 2nd and when I go to HPs site it says the build dates are by Nov 23.

I haven't taken any IR temps yet, but so far the unit runs fairly cool. It does get a little warm, but I had the unit running for 5 hours straight loading software and setting up my accounts and it was not warm at all on the keyboard/palm rest area, and was slight warm on the bottom back left next to the exhaust port. I do have the fan setting in the BIOS to Always ON, and is not too loud in a quite environment.

The only two things I have noticed so far is the Trackpad has a dead spot to the right of the scroll lines which makes it hard to scroll without looking down to make sure you are on the scroll area or to the right of it, and stated above the battery meter only shows percentage and not time left.

The LCD screen has no dead/stuck pixels and as stated earlier in this thread seems to be washed out but dropping the Gamma Levels to minimum really did help.

I hope that HP does get Linux support going(BIOS Bug) so I can at least use Acronis True Image to restore my unit without having to pull the HD and use another device to restore my system if needed.

The laptop is not loud, even when playing. I haven't had any problems with the trackpad and the screen. It feels robust, but still light.

I ordered a Dell Studio XPS, but the order is 1.5 months old and may not see it until mid-December. I can get a similarly configured dv6t quad for $300 less. Only thing I can see that I'm missing is the RGB LED screen and 1080P resolution.

I'm trying to decide to tell Dell to go to hell. Anyone know how this compares to the Dell? I want to make a decision soon. :)

No, Acronis Restore Disc is built on Linux, I have tried all versions and while the latest 2010 starts, the laptop will overheat and shutdown or lockup within minutes.

Amazing forum. You're actually the only ones discussing this laptop..
I've been strolling down the web for the past 2 days trying to find any respecatable reviews or users and now here I am. Thanks go out to whomever started this topic.
I just registered to participate in the discussion. Hoping to share some experiences/ point of views.

Anyways.. for the last weeks Ive been searching my behind off trying to find the best deal for a T9xxx CPU. Couldnt find it. Notebooks are too damn expensive over here.. its amazing if you compare it to the prices overseas. Freaking Euro sucks. They never shouldve implemented it.
I'm going to buy it off eBay. Thats what I've decided since the HP store sucks here in Holland. NO customizing feature.. stupid.

It will be my first laptop ever and im really looking forward to it..
i think HP did a very smart thing pricing it this way (in America anyway).
You can compare it to what Samsung did with their Samsung Star.
(first cheap- touch phone for the masses) Its the same thing with this X4 notebook.

Anyways, it still is a lot of money.. just to sum up some stuff that makes my nose twitch, and could be troublesome:

    - Lets be honest, its a new model and just like any other newly introduced piece of sophisticated technology things tend to go wrong. Has anyone noticed any imperfections on his/her dv6t i7 notebook? Anything other than the ones below that is.

    - Screen resolution + LED complaints on this forum.
Matrinix.. IF youre reading this.. since youre one of the first owners.
Overall: Do you like the screen? Has it burned in with positive result?

    - The battery endurance.. it will last 3,5 hours max. when idle. Correct?
Thats really.. shizznits. And the adapter.. could some one post pictures already??

    - The BIOS situation; i dont give a damn about linux but i would like to do a full format and dual boot XP & Win7 Ultimate, is this possible?

    - Are there any Europeans reading along?

Thank you for reading. Am looking forward to ordering.

Glad to see a good discussion on the laptop. I need to purchase one before my vacation late December, and am thinking about getting this as a desktop replacement. I've got two questions:

    1. Can the 6 cell battery last a couple hours playing a Blu-ray disc? I don't know if I'll be able to plug it in on the plane. And yes, 1366x768 is only half the resolution of HD, but I have a PS3 and Netflix so it's all BD for me. And 90% of the time this will be connected to a 24" monitor.

    2. Has anyone tried running XP compatibility mode or - better yet - some VM? Is Intel VT (virtualization technology) enabled?

I was seriously considering the Vaio FW 590, which has a great screen and a dirt cheap BD burner. Then I read about how Sony disabled VT in the BIOS and you have to actually hack it (not just change a BIOS setting) to get it working. And it's still not perfect with the hack. So I'm hoping HP doesn't have these issues.

    Thanks much!

    Hi, I have 2 questions,
1-I'm curious about the type of ram 230m uses. Is it GDDR3?
2-About the interlacing issues with the LCD, Do all the people that have laptop here have the problem?
    thanks

Well it's hard to say. It doesn't look encouraging, but there's no breakdown by model, and SquareTrade claims that there is a clear difference in reliability between netbooks, entry level laptops, and premium laptops. I'd like to think that for HP this is a premium laptop. It's definitely one of their more expensive models outside of the Envy series.

Still, makes me consider shelling out $$ for a care pack, esp. if I replace my desktop with this.

Yeah, I don't think those ASUS G50/G51 laptops with gpus that reach 100C so easily will last more than a year. ;)
Considering that all OEMs use the same parts, durability of the system is more dependent on people's way of using IMO, like don't put your laptop when it's so hot in your bag, don't move it while it's working etc. Most people use their stuff so bad and then they complain why their HDD has failed.

    @Ramzii, thanks

Another good point to help me rationalize shelling out $500 for the Intel X25 SSD, even though this will be on a desk in my office 95% of the time. Hey, we might get an earthquake :D

But one of those angled cooling stands that folds flat sounds like a good investment.

Where did all the owners of the dv6t Quad disappear to?

Are they too busy enjoying their purchase?
Or are they trying to get a hold of HP customer service ?

I am an owner of this laptop sorry for not posting sooner- I have been pretty wrapped up in with HP trying to get them to release an improved BIOS which will allow me to run linux natively (and to fix some of the other BIOS issues).

The standard HP install is OK, if you just try and run it then I would immediately suggest that you update Adobe Acrobat Reader and Sun Java as they are out of date (and pretty vulnerable). Not shocking but it is a pain that the backup media will re-install these vulnerable apps and there is no easy way to update them in the image.

The screen is a bit of a change (at least for me, I came from 1600x1200) but it is OK. I concur with the comments about the colors being a bit washed out.

I haven't experienced any system shutdowns due to overheating but it does get hot if you are doing anything intensive- playing crysis can give the system a workout and the heat will be pouring out.

As for the questions about the battery- if you just take the standard 6 cell I would prepare to either plug it in alot or get the long life 6 cell or the 12 cell, the CPU eats power if you are doing anything. I don't have measurements but there is no way it would last beyond 2 hours (probably closer to 1 to 1 1/2 if you are doing anything intensive).

The GPU is nice but the drivers are pretty new (as with most of the drivers on this system). I have yet to test out the GPU with CUDA enabled programs (like for password crackers- I am in security). The underneath of the laptop is laid out pretty nicely, there are two memory slots (but DDR3 memory is still pretty expensive) and the hard drive and wireless card are under another cover (one of the two wifi antennas came undone somewhere in transit and I needed to reattach it). I guess one benefit is that the system supports VT (virtualization) so you can load up VMWare or VirtualBox (and get a quasi linux fix). For windows experience the biggest drag on it was the 320GB disk :/

FWIW: dv6t-2000 CTO- i7 720, 4GB ram, 320GB HD, G-wireless, 6cell standard battery, fingerprint reader (not used, eh, should have bumped up the battery)

Thanks, CV. Can you comment on how battery depleting playing a BD movie is? I'm wondering how much it stresses the CPU or graphics card, if at all. I'm concerned I'll need the 12 cell just to watch a whole movie on a plane.

Since the activity is below average.
In this official (dutch) manual you'll find a drawing of the bottom
    with all the components.

    1- Hard drive space.
    2- Cooling fans. ( a lot )
    3- Battery space.
    4- RAM-Slots, TV-tuner, W-LAN & Inter Turboboost.

.PDF , Its on page 11 (17 of 26).

@ CV, thanks a bunch for telling us your point of view & experiences, keep'm coming, we need more owners like you here!

I found the parts about the battery life, heating up, and this: FWIW: dv6t-2000 of the upmost interest.
There was no way to find out by what model-name it went.

@ Liquidcool, I think you'll get through the BD movie just fine, just as long as it isnt an extended version of 2,5 hours....

Question: Whats the max. resolution on the screen?

    Hi Guys!

I ordered mine a week ago and waiting to receive it. I have a couple of quick questions.

    1. Is there a possibility to add second hard drive using a caddy? I couldn't find anything in HP's Part Surfer.

    2. Once i make the recovery DVDs, can i format/partition hard drive and completely customize where i want the OS installed and which programs i want installed. Or do the recovery disc(s) restore to factory default?

I'm in India right now and my friend will be bring it over in couple of weeks. I will post my first impressions then.

I should have configured up to $1299 and used the additional $200 coupon, but missed out on it. Didn't see the $1299 requirement and gave up once the coupon code didn't work :(. I see it as a temporary replacement laptop, so pretty happy with the config i get for the money. I ordered a 12-cell battery on top of 6-cell, but will most likely end up using 12-cell all the time, due to the angled keyboard and bottom ventilation space it creates. I'm not worried about the screen resolution as long as the quality of the screen and image are good. in demanding cases i will output to an external monitor.

    cheers!

I've read on other NBR threads that the recovery disc brings you right back to the factory default, but that's what any reinstall will do. You have to fully back up your HD to an external drive (or a service like Mozy) regularly or at milestones, and restore that after you recover. It's not really different from any other restore process.

I brought a HP Pavilion dv6-2005TX a few days ago, and I'm utterly disappointed that this notebook IN AUSTRALIA has only 32bit Windows 7 – I had initially thought prior to my purchase that a notebook with a core i7 processor must certainly have the 64bit windows 7. Anyways I have two question to ask you.
    1. How can I upgrade my 32bit windows 7 to 64bit windows 7? And how much would it cost?
    2. Would I mess up the computer system if I do an upgrade? (I read from the internet that installing a new windows OS, would remove some important HP drivers, that are essential to run the HP notebook.)

Sorry if this is a silly question, but is there any issue with running the laptop screen and an external monitor at the same time - essentially a dual monitor setup? I saw on the Dell site they're pushing that setup (to sell more monitors, of course), with a big LCD in front and the laptop on a raised/angled stand as a second monitor. Thought it looked cool and maybe even useful :) I can't imagine there'd be a problem, but I thought I'd see if anyone is doing this. Thanks.

Ok, then it brings me to my main concern that HP is not providing a CD/DVD for installed Windows 7? That doesn't sound good.

Aren't we paying for the OS and shouldn't we have the right to install how we want?

some guys mentioned that they did a clean install of Windows 7. Can anyone elaborate on what exactly they meant by it?

    Cheers!

I'm confused about the battery life. People in dv7t Quad edition thread claim to have around 2-3 hours battery life, dv6t has the same spec but smaller cisplay but it can't reach 2hour battery life?

Anyone have the 6 cell high capacity battery want to let me know how much battery life I should expect with basic web browsing and such? I really wanted the 12 cell, but I hate when batteries stick out.

First, the system allows you to create your own system recovery disc for free, assuming you got a machine with a burner. You should do that as soon as you get your system.

I think the original factory setting is fairly clean, other than the standard bloatware, and the drivers you want/need installed anyway. If that's not clean enough, you gotta remove stuff yourself or buy a copy of Windows. Yeah, it kind of sucks, but just about every mfr. does it that way. I don't think HP is different from Dell, Lenovo, etc. in this regard, but someone can correct me. Although I know Sony offers something called "fresh start" that is a clean install without any added software.
