I got this machine a week back and am busy relishing it. While I donot have problems with the screen, like some of you have pointed out ,I am not liking the speed of the HDD. The Seagate HDD on this lappy feels kinda slow to me ,especially the boot and hibernate times are not that great . Can any one else you post your experiences with the HDD ?

I have not clean installed Win 7 like some of you folks in here ,but have uninstalled most of the junk preinstalled by HP . Can any one tell me if clean installing Win7 would really make a difference ? My WEI is 5.9 dragged down by the HDD score.

Is any one using a laptop cooler with good results ? I tried the belkin ,but it proved to be not that effective with the dv6t quad ,since the exhaust vents are on the rear and the bottom left of the laptop .

    My spec is below .
    • Espresso Black
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB)
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    • SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    • Webcam
    • Wireless-g
    • HP Color Matching Keyboard
    • High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • No Modem
    • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

well.. for tips.. i put my laptop, bottom facing freezer.. and it says around 32C for the next 10mins while only being in the freezer for about 30 seconds.. lol.....

but im using a targus pad, and it helps, its not considerable, since i cannt afford the powerhouse fans, but the laptop runs cool enough, which i thought was very surprising, if you dont want to push it, limit how much CPU it can use on certain battery settings.

but yes, the vents on the hp are very oddly positioned i will have to say

    How about your HDD??

    Yes, it will.

I used to worry about that aswell, but it seems that WEI really isnt a reliable benchmark. After some advice I downloaded HD Tune Pro and done some benchmarking.. and Seagate is just fine for a HD.
You can do some tests to see for yourself.

    Look here for theboot-up tool.
The tool will reboot ur pc, when finished give u the time it took.

And here for the HD Tune utility.

For the posted results and comparison material see my thread over here.

I have a bat file that defrags you boot files , wait for the dos window to close by itself as it can take a while to finish.

My dv6 boots in 64 seconds.

    bat file contents below.

    **********************************
    Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
    defrag -b %SystemDrive%

One of the first things I do (on new Windows XP/64-bit, Windows Server 2003, Vista and now Windows 7) is disable the write-through mode in the drive. To do this, click "Start", right-click on "Computer", select "Properties", click the "Device Manager" link (on the left), find "Disk Rives" and open it, locate your C: drive (usually, there is just one drive showing), right-click on the drive and select "Properties", select the "Policies" tab, and make sure both the check-boxes are checked. The lower check-box ("Turn off Windows write-cache buffer...") is unchecked by default. This should visibly improve your hard drive performance.

What this option does is that when data is written to disks, it is actually written into a cache that later writes it back to the physical disk. This is done all the time in UNIX and all the Linux based systems I know: you have to manually turn it on on Windows.

    Hope this helps.

Just downloaded and installed the new BIOS update for the dv6t quad from HP's support site. The BIOS revision jumped from F.04 (which is what my new laptop came with) to F.13. I wonder if anyone at HP made much of the "13" in the version number, but I bet they are not the superstitious type :)

Everything is working fine for me so far. Will keep you updated should there be a problem.

My dv6t quad is just a few days old now, and wanted to share that it runs a lot cooler than my dv5t Core 2 Duo bought earlier this year. On my dv5t, core temperatures of 75 to 85 degrees were not uncommon, despite a cooler. On the dv6t, which has the same basic workload as the dv5t, they rarely go above 65 WITHOUT a cooler. All I do is tip up the back slightly to give the cooling vents more space.

By way of explanation, either HP has done a good job of redesigning their heat-dissipation pathway, or some parts of my dv5t (inside the laptop) might be clogged with dust.

Man, After further use, you NEED to have a 12 cell battery for this beast.

On my EV03 3 cell (6 cell equivalent) I'm only getting 1 hour 25 minutes doing very simple video avi watching.

I'd imaging gaming would net me like 30 minutes lol....

the targus pad i have is a slightly older model, and nearly not as effective as that one it seems. it lowers my core temp to about 3-5C.. which isnt considerable, but every little bit helps..

as for the HDD, if i keep gaming, or doing my thing, the drive never goes more then 109F, i have yet to see it reach that high commonly.

they seem to have made a very successful cooling system for a powerhouse laptop. but the one thing i really... really hate on this thing

my notebook is 2 weeks old..

and i already have SCRATCHES!!! its unbelevable.. and i have a sleeve, and i take very good care of it. =\ i guess ill just buy a skin from SKINIT..

but im taking this thing up to the alps on friday, takin a plane, would anyone here advise against that?

also, i know the pwoerbrick is a 90watt.
but i have a car plugin thats 70watt and i can plug it into my laptop powerbrick, would it still work? or not so much..

I am experiencing a problem with one of my external eSata drives, and wondering if anyone would help.

I have two eSata drives, both mounted on 2.5" compatible "Coolmax" enclosures. One of these is a 100GB drive, while the other one is a 250GB.

I connect these using 1) an eSata cable between the enclosure and the first USB port on the left side (the one away from me as I use the laptop) and 2) a USB cable between the enclosure and the second USB port on the left side.

I remember that on my dv5t, the 100GB drive was always recognized without any problems. Initially, that machine did not recognize the 250GB drive, but something happened (?? all those updates ??) after a few months and it suddenly started to recognize this drive. At this point, my dv5t will recognize either drive.

On my new dv6t quad, I am seeing once again that the first drive is always recognized, but the second one is not. I know this is not a problem with the enclosures, because, as I have said, both work fine with my dv5t. It is the dv6t which does not recognize the second drive.

So, could anyone clue me in as to what I need to do, or some trouble-shooting approaches I could follow, to solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Well we started with a netbook, which I actually had in hand for a few weeks and finally decided to test it out before Christmas so there were no surprises. Glad I did because I was surprised. I loaded two websites she goes to frequently and it could not handle some of the flash animations and worse it could not even play small sized HD videos. Besides the new netbooks coming out that have the NEO processors or whatever, which I have tried and still was not satisfied with overall, the next step up was a notebook. She is quite demanding when it comes to electronics. Unlike me she started off with not only internet but high speed internet, bluray, 3d graphics, etc. So when she gets on a substandard system she knows it and will let me know it.

Although I have seen the display for this system, or at least the display that HP told me is the same one I will be getting, Im still concerned about what Im actually going to get. Fingers are crossed that its at least as good as what I saw at best buy.

Im excited about her walking in Christmas morning to see it sitting there playing a bluray movie next to the tree.

Whooooooohooooooooooo ... Finally received my laptop.

    - What all should I check/test and how, to make sure nothing's wrong with it?
    - What are some of the recurring, common issues I should check for?
    - How can I stress test this laptop apart from wPrime? I dont have any games.
    - What all updates should I run? Looks like a new BIOS was released today, but not sure if I really want to update BIOS.

    Regards

Is there any thing new enabled in the BIOS? The version number is a large upside from F.04A .I should say Insyde & HP should allow more user changes in the BIOS .Wonder how am I gonna over clock this one if I need to ;) . The 720QM stock is not as fast as the 820QM but I believe it can be over-clocked .

Congrats, how you like it so far? How is the screen?
um here you go InterBurnTest, 3DMark06 v110 Basic Edition.
Keep an eye on your temperatures with this app to make sure the fans are ok.
Try the app DriverMax to check if your drivers are up2date.

ps - also important, search health advice on how to calibrate and treat your battery.. i.e. when fully charged eject the battery and keep on AC power (when possible). This because Li-Ion batteries deteriorate when hott.

Im also still not sure wether to flash the BIOS or not..

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually, only one USB port in the dv6t is a dual-use (USB/eSata) port. It is the one on the left next to the HDMI port. I just use the other USB port on the left for the USB connection, which just supplies power.

BTW, I did try using one of the USB ports on the right for power, but saw the same symptoms.

I looked around, but did not see any new options exposed after the BIOS update...it was the same set of options, and even the "top-level" menu was the same. So, nothing new as far as user options go.

    Hi
I have having some issue with my eSATA enclosure when I connect it to my new dv6t Quad.

When I connect via eSATA, the computer recognizes the drive correctly (verified this via the Device Manager and HDTune). But, the drive doesnt show up on My Computer or Drive manager (where you can manage partitions, etc). Any idea what might be going on?

ps. My primary hard drive is the default HP drive (C, D, partitions etc).

You have to set the partition as active in Disk Management. Search "disk management" in the start menu and click on "Create and format harddisk partitions". Then the drive should show up in there. Right click it and select "Mark Partition as Active" Then right click again and click on "Format" (only if needed)

    Hope this helps

Now, what does simple volume mean?

alright, my scratches i have one right near the trackpad... its minute.. not too big.. then i got a big deep on on the top left corner.. and i have no idea where that came from, i take care of this thing almost as good as i take care of my cars.. =\

but yea, im leaving for europe in about 2 hours, and ill be the first to let you guys know if its good to bring your laptop to such altitudes. BWAHAHA

gotta take one for the team.

but yea, so far, im still having problems with my wifi, it connects, i can browse for about 5 mins, then i cant browse or do anything web related.. =\
i scanned for malware and viruses, nothing.. i can connect to my neighbors wifi, but i cannt connect to my school and home network.. =\

ill connect, stay on the web for about 5-10 mins.. then it wont load anything anymore, but it still shows status is connected. =\

even bit torrent wont load anything. so what i end up doing it changing the channel in my advanced configuration options in my wifi tab, and just change it to any channel other then the one it was originally on. =\

it lasts for about 5-10 mins.. drops. gotta change the channel again..

    help?

Yup, due to a video editing app. Kinda heavy..
But was running low on battery (3%) so I forgive it. :p

I found out some interesting things, not sure how to compare them with others though.
Someone know how to rate DDR3 memory?

    I believe these are ours:

I would like to know how good/bad this is? Where do they rank?

One for all and all for one. whehe, good luck, be safe & have fun.
    As far as your Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN problem. If you havent tried this yet;

    - Driver download http://support.intel.com/support/network
    - Ask for help in the hardware support forum section here.

    Hello Everyone!

I got mine and so far so good. Haven't tested it out fully. I did a new installation of Windows 7 after creating Recovery Discs and backing up SWSETUP folder. I deleted the recovery partition completely and formatted the entire hard drive. My drivers are all up-to-date and even updated BIOS to the latest version without any issues.

I'm quite happy with the keyboard build quality that few people have been complaining about. Yes, the screen color is not that great out-of-the-box but i knew that could be fixed. I like not to touch Graphic Card Control Panel to mess around with Gamma and other settings. I used "basICColor" color calibration software along with Spyder2Pro colorimeter and created a monitor profile that i'm happy with. I will be tweaking it later but to start with that works very well.

By the way my monitor is LG Display LP156WH2-TLQ1 and might not produce good results with other brands that few people have got. I have included a bunch of profiles created in a bright lit room (fluorescent) using the presets for Notebook, Photography, Multimedia and Graphics. Load them up and use them based on your needs. Typically ones for Photography will be dimmer and more warmer.

RESET NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL TO FACTORY DEFAULT AND INCREASE HARDWARE BRIGHNESS TO MAXIMUM BY PRESSING FN+F8, BEFORE APPLYING THE PROFILE.
ICC profiles are found under C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\Color. After copying the profile to the location, set it as default from Windows Color Management.

Let me know how it looks and tomorrow morning i will create the same presets in daylight condition with no artificial lighting.
    Cheers!

    Hi,
Did you have to call Microsoft to get the Windows keys activated. I am planning to rebuild my new laptop once it arrives on Wed over Xmas..So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can see it in NVIDIA Control Panel. Click on any settings under "Display" on the left-side frame ane you will see a small picture of a laptop with the model number underneath it in green color.

You don't have to. Follow the first post on below-mentioned thread carefully, especially Instruction No. 2. It has a link to download a small utility that can backup and restore windows activation. It worked perfectly

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=432564

After clean install, you can go ahead and install drivers from SWSETUP or download latest drivers mentioned in this link and download them instead.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=404164

i found that there is an update for every driver that shipped with the laptop.

    cheers!

Well, im no expert.. but I can bring in my 2 cents:

    Major cons:
    - 6-cell battery lasts 2 hours.
    - Screen viewing angles are suckish.

    Major Pro's:
    - Ferrari speed.
    - You'll blow away the competition.
    - MW2 @ max settings!
    - White is stylish as fudge.
