So my second DV6TQE (this one with 6570) just got here. Preliminary testing shows it's using about 18W at idle and dimmest LCD, or about 10W more than the Intel chip. Obviously we knew it would be more and I think it could be worse. With the 61WHr extended 6-cell we can extrapolate the battery life to be a little under 3-1/2 hours under these circumstances.

Now my quandary: Which to keep? The 2nd one has the aforementioned discrete graphics as well as the 7200rpm HDD (vs. 5400 in the 1st dv6tqe), and thanks to the larger coupon is actually about $50 less expensive.

It just comes down to how certain we are that switchable graphics will at some point be supported...

A typical modern AC adapter will typically have 80-90% efficiency. I'll try to run RMClock tool tonight so we can get an apples to apples comparison of your machine w/o the ATI compared to mine with it. It wouldn't suprise me if the 6570 is pulling 8-10 watts in the "low load" cases. That's why swichable graphics are so important.

Oh... didn't see your latest reply... awesome info. Now all we have to do is wait for the new graphics drivers and hopefully we'll see our machines w/6570s capable of running at ~10 watts when running on intel graphics.

    Yep - hope so.

The AC adapters are very different. The Intel GPU adapter is smaller and has specs: 19V, 4.74A, 90W

    The ATI GPU adapter: 18.5V, 6.5A (!!), 120W

It is cheaper and more powerful.....and if the update does come out....you will be pissed that you don't have it.

Uh damn. the 6570 gets 60-90 fps in BC2 low settings @ 1366x768. That is impressive (imo).

~30 fps on high, barely what I would consider playable.

Edit: Yowza, CPU gets hot though. In my 20C room, Core #0 maxed out at 87C while playing (Core#3 only hit 76C, though... 11C cooler??? does that suggest improper heatsink application??). Tj max is 100C though, so I guess it's still safe?

The AMD site has released the new 11.1 Catalyst Drivers (Released today 1/26/2011). Since the 6570 is a renamed 5570 they should work. I have not tried the drivers yet as I just got my new dv6tqe today....if someone tries them out.......let us know what's up! Thanks!

Downloading now, but the download page says it's meant for 6800 and 6900 series cards only....

Edit: Performance much worse with 11.1a... rolling back.

Edit2: ok, realized that there were two releases today, 11.1 and 11.1a. I tried 11.1a which is not meant for our cards. Trying 11.1 now!

I made a usb stick with the HP recovery program, but can't seem to be able to have it boot after a restart. With CDs you simply stick a CD in the drive and it brings everything up. Am I missing a step with the usb install?

Well, I can't for the life of me seem to get 11.1 to work. On the driver detail page I can't get it to display a newer driver than 9/9/2010.

Edit: Aaaand, no matter what I do, my fps are crushed. Where before I started updating I was getting 60-90fps, now I"m getting 30. Looks like I'm headed for a restore.

First of all, did you remember to completely uninstall the old driver first? This is VERY important, and the problem you're describing typically occurs when you forget to uninstall first.

If so, are you sure that you downloaded the mobility driver for Windows 7 64-bit? (Just to be sure, it's in this post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...ti-has-released-11-1-drivers.html#post7097209)

I am a little bit confused right now regarding the discrete graphics card. some of you here say it employs GDDR5, some say DDR3..

I spoke/chatted to two sales representatives of HP, both told me it was DDR3..
but one also told me, that the card is GDDR5 compatible and I would be able to upgrade its memory.... that is complete news to me...

    thanks

Do I need to use Driver Sweeper (or the like) even when upgrading drivers? I know to use it when switching between nVidia and ATI. Or is just uninstalling the old driver through Device Manager enough?

Not sure which version I downloaded... Just got it from the ATI site. You'd think ATI would build a warning into the installer if it was the wrong version, though.. right?

With the new ATI drivers is switchable graphics happening?

Or are we at the mercy of HP to release a BIOS yet to supply that feature?

Why HP not included a BIOS pre-ready to support switching of Intel / ATI with the current driver?

Seem strange to say that the DV6 does it when it doesn't yet. Maybe they are pulling that from older DV6 marketing?

Can someone tell me the name of the fan control application installed when you first get your DV6TQE. It's in the HP folder of programs on start menu. I did a clean install and I tried googling for it with no avail.

This is a phenomonal laptop except for one major flaw as many people have pointed out. The touchpad on this thing is a HORRIBLE!!! I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep it because it so bad. I've been tapping on the touchpad itself rather than clicking the buttons which helps but right clicking is still an issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve the touchpad?

    Thank you

Wow you are getting bad info:
GDDR5 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 5) is just for the video card installed (1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 6570 graphics)
The DDR3 is (Double-Data-Rate 3 SDRAM) for the system memory that the laptop uses for the operating system (Windows 7). So the 2 sale people did not know what they were talking about.
As far as I know you cannot upgrade the ram on the video card. BUT you can upgrade the system ram/memory. They gave you bad information.

There is a right Click button on the Keyboard as well. Double tapping with two fingers also does the trick. You can configure hotzones for clicking in the settings if you find left clicking sometimes changes the mouse pointer. There are different Multi-touch gestures for all mouse actions.

It's not that bad, you just need to get used to it. :)

    @ Everyone
Anyone with a Touchscreen Dv6tqe tried the new TouchSmart 4.0 on it? Does it work? It looks awesome with the Magic Canvas and Magnets concept! ;)

I don't see where you can create hotzones in the touchpad settings. I tried double tapping with two fingers and it didn't work. Is there somewhere else besides the touchpad settings that I need to go to?

I really don't want to return this laptop because I love everything about it except for this touchpad. Plus the price is incredible, $999!

    Thanks

    Open Mouse Properties
Go to the last tab called "Device Settings"
    Click "Settings"

You'll now be in Synaptics management where you can set hot zones and all kinds of other stuff. The one thing I wasn't able to do at all was set two finger (single) tap to right-click. I really want that.

That is exactly where I went and I don't see anything about hotzones.

BTW, how do you create a signature here? I looked all over and couldn't find it.

while i agree it doesn't work that well as shipped, i have to say that with some googling and about 2 hours to get used to tapping instead of clicking, this is by far the best trackpad i've ever used next to apple. (i had the envy 14, which uses the same trackpad as the dv6)

some basic things to note - with the right tweaks, you get:
    left click - single tap
right click - 2 finger single tap
scrolling - 2 finger scroll (inertial/smooth scrolling, rather than the jumpy default scroll)
middle mouse button - 3 finger tap
click and hold - double tap and hold on your second tap (for drag and drop, etc)

update your synaptic driver to the latest version, and check the bottom one on the list, it's below the palm check option (one of the secondary options, named start zone or something)

try the reil's envy 14 touchpad app - as far as i know the touchpad is exactly the same.

even though that's true, the 6570 can still use the cheaper DDR3 for its graphics memory - in fact, the new SB lenovo ideapad Y560 uses the 6570m with DDR3 memory - so it performs almost identical to the 5730m.

I'm *PRETTY* sure that the 6570m on the dv6 and dv7 are the same - with GDDR5 memory. but I can't be sure until i get my hands on this thing... stupid snow... no snowday for work by still get delay from fedex......

No switchable graphics. I would assume that a BIOS update will have to come down before switchable graphics are enabled.

the one i used is v15.1.16.2
i have not tried the new one released just last week, v15.1.22.1, but supposedly it:
    - Improves responses for an issue where the cursor jumps when a multi-touch
gesture is used on the touchpad.

i think windows automatically installed them from windows update when i was using it, but as long as the version number is the same it shouldn't matter whether you got it from hp or synaptic.

I bought two Dv6's (one with the $350 off coupon and the second with the $500 off coupon, planning on returning the first one) and the second one arrived today. One difference I noticed between the two is that the second one has a sort of red tint to the screen, while the first one does not. Is there anyway I can fix this? I don't like the red tint in the second one.

    Thanks,
    po1son

Thats a pretty good deal and i would have ordered almost the same( had those 500USD coupons didn't ran out that fast! Waiting for another one, and worried that there won't be any more! :( ), except for
    - 640Gb with 7200RPM
    - 8Gb RAM ( worth the extra $50, i guess )
    - 6cell + 9Cell
Btw, do not forget to drop your first impressions on this one when you get it. :)
And please someone with the Touchscreen Dv6, try and install the Touchsmart 4.0, if it installs, it would be mind blowing. :D

About the same as I paid for mine. I went with 8gb of ram, 640gb HD to get 7200 RPM and Windows 7 Pro. No touch screen or lightscribe.

That is basically what I (re)ordered on mine. Except I want with 6gbs or ram instead of an additional $60 plus tax for 8gbs.....mostly because I can find a 4GB stick of matching Ram for about $40 shipped. That extra $25 will go towards a 16MB USB stick..

Which brings me to my question.....

Can someone tell me how large the back-up/boot file is?
I'm trying to figure out if I want to burn it to a disk...or put it on a USB stick.

I was skeptical when I placed the order because I was going to try to wait until President's Day to see what special HP is going to offer but something told me to go ahead and place the order last week with that $500 coupon. :) Besides, I have 21 days to return it. Does anyone think there will be a better deal around President's Day?

Also, I've been reading all the posts about this touchpad which had me worried. That's why I ordered my laptop with a touch screen which should alleviate some use of the touchpad. Do you think that's true? In addition, I bought a HP mouse already and received it before my laptop gets here on Friday. However, I hope I am able to adjust some settings to make my touchpad at least somewhat usable. I will follow some of the technical advice in this post.

Also note that AMD didn't release the software in that driver anyway. You guys are probably going to have to wait at least another month, it seems.

The touchpad itself is ok, it's the buttons that drive me crazy. They are very stiff and hard to push. Last night I was about ready to call HP and return the laptop after only 4 hours but I decided to give it more time. So far today I've been using the touchpad without having to push the buttons at all. It works out pretty well this way by just tapping the pad inplace of using the buttons. I also have a wireless mouse I bought for the laptop but I don't like to have to always carry a mouse around with me.

I'm going to give it a week and see how I feel after that. It's a shame because this is a beast of a laptop. I really hope that I can get comfortable using the touchpad without the buttons.

Hmm..I guess this video will tell you a little bit bout it. :)
YouTube - A closer look at the HP TouchSmart 310 TouchSmart 4.0 Software
( skip to 2:25 to see about Touchsmart 4.0 only! )

Although the Video if from sept last year, it has been released for touchscreen tablets recently a week ago i guess. :)
Hope someone finds a way to make it run on our Dv6 Touchscreens. Technically, if it runs on Touchsmart Tablet notebooks, it should run on DV6 Touchscreens. ( I might be completely off track though! )

    P.S.
If anyone tries it on their DV6 touchscreen, make sure you have .net v4 installed and execute the software with Admin rights. Fingers crossed for this to work on DV6's.

It's been sitting in Newark, NJ FedEx since 2am Wednesday, which drives me crazy, because it could certainly have been delivered by now to NYC. Now it'll be delayed until next week thanks to our huge snow storm. Oh well...

I plan on posting my BLOATWARE removal experience when I get it.

mine is taking over a day to get from newark to nyc as well, it still shows as "Departed FedEx location
    NEWARK, NJ"
    ... stupid snow...

it's probably easier just to do a minimal system recovery, or a clean install.

anyone know how i can create another partition without getting rid of the recovery partition (and hp_tools partition if it's required for the recovery partition to function)?
i like to keep my personal data on a separate partition, but there are already 4 partitions on the disk when shipped...

I burned it to 6 single layer DVDs...not a plesant process but you only have to do it once. If I had known ahead of time I would have at least picked up some double layer DVDs.
