How loud is the laptop? Is it very noticeable under load?

While playing I would say I don't notice it if I have sound on but during max load (Intel Burn Test and Furmark) it's like a tornado on steroids.

So I would say that during real life testing you won't notice it unless you're in a quiet room with sound off.

That's not too bad. I'm just asking to make sure it's not too disruptive. I think that at this point, anything would be better than my desktop, which has 8 fans running at 100% the entire time.

It's an idling 747 in my room.

I heard the trackpad kind of sucked. So I'm packing my old G5 and replaced my desktop mouse with a G500.

I'm looking for a bluetooth mouse, because I don't want to sacrifice a USB port for something so basic. I'm looking at this one (the only bluetooth rechargeable mouse under $30 I could find). Anyone seen this or used one?

Only a bug because it's pretty new hardware. Same with i5 450M showing as 520M.

It seems I have an abnormally cool laptop.

I was playing BC2 on the maximum screen resolution available for this laptop (video settings on medium), as well as unzipping 12 GB worth of files whilst streaming a 720p music video on YouTube. My max temp. on a core was 72 degrees C.

Now I would prefer to OC this so that I can play BC2 on high...

    i7-720QM, 7200 rpm 500GB HDD.

    Regular stuff.

    Okay poops gone down.

Several questions, my laptop seems to have gone into fits.

    1. Is it normal for the fan to be on even when only browsing the internet?
    2. When playing bad company 2, I get averages of 70-78 degrees Celcius, is that normal? Is it dangerous?
    3. I cannot see my gpu at all in hwmonitor NOR everest... wth?
    4. That heat scares me.
    5. When browsing the internet with multiple tabs, I get temps from high 50's to low 60's. Normal?

anyone here try to get newer catalyst drivers installed with their DV6T or DV6T:SE that's got switchable graphics

someone else with one can't get it to work right

The acer method is install both, disable switchable in bios, install catalyst, turn switchable back on in bios. Not sure if HP gives you that option (or any options) in the bios.

the bios doesn't let you turn off switchable in the dv6z version (abbadon confirmed that). dv6z DOES let you install the newer catalyst though

No, I don't have exact values, but FPS feels around low 20's to high 10's.

78C is fine for a quad core i7 and they usually idle in the 50s and sometimes go into the low 60s under normal use.

If you are getting that low FPS and don't see your GPU in HWMonitor are you sure you have the 5650 enabled? Right click the desktop and there should be an option having to do with switchable graphics and make sure the High Performance GPU is enabled.

Oh right. Try downloading GPUZ, celibate. That supports the 5650 and should give you the temperature of it.

Worked fine installing ATI drivers from HP's driver page and then just installing the newer ATI drivers on top of it. Switchable graphics works fine and I got a couple more fps in BC2.

And the 5650 does not show up in HWMonitor for me either, cba to install Everest to check, rather use GPU-z

Thank you for this and the above post.

I guess it's because my last laptop was so crappy heat was just non-existent. Could you tell me at what temperatures one should start worrying about with my specs?

Also, I wanna start OCing my gpu. I've seen many others with 650/1000, so that's probably my goal. But just in case, could you give me general information on what is dangerous and what isn't for the gpu? I apologize for my hopelessness. I made a huge jump in tech, as my only other computer in this house is a pent D

    That's good to know.

Maybe the other dude is doing it with integrated graphics on.

Or maybe he needs to reinstall the stuff from scratch (using driver sweeper and everything)

edit: Oh damn he DOESN'T have switchable graphics (has an i7 dv6t:se) and it's not installing.

what the hell HP. What the hell. There shouldn't be any problems at all in this case.

The dv6tse also doesn't have an option in the BIOS to disable switchable graphics. And when I install 10.6, it doesn't actually update the display drivers. It just updates the control center.

I was just about to ask this. For everyone who updated/tried to update to 10.6 check your driver version in CCC or GPUZ. It should be 8.741. Sometimes there is an error when it updates the driver but still says it has an older version of CCC and sometimes everything runs fine and it says that the drivers installed but they actually did not overwrite the old ones.

As long as you stay under 90-95C and the processor is not throttling (slowing down to reduce heat) with the i7 quad then you are fine.

Overclocking is generally not dangerous as long as you do not push it too. If you can run Furmark after overclocking your GPU then you are fine. Even if it crashes/freezes you can just turn off the computer and try again with lower clocks.

Nah, Fedex told me the delay could last as much as 30 days. It's other people who reported their delays last 2 days or even 6 days.

Now I spoke to HP today they said that they already submitted the requested documents. I called Fedex division called IPD(800-455-4588), they told me that they still havent received the documents and that once the package is cleared, I'd get it the next business day. They said the package is stuck there in Bulk with a whole bunch of other Laptops.

Should I be worried about my 80-90* temps? Even though the thresh hold is 105 I'm curious if this one is running "hot" or needs burning in. Just browsing and stuff right now it's at 40*c so...

I dunno, I really like this laptop. Wish it had super cooling with dual vents and all that jazz.

Also, does removing thermal pads and replacing them with thermal paste [AS5] dissipate heat better? Maybe I should try it.

I got mid 90's when i first started it up, but the more I benched the steadier the temps held at mid 80's. Once I get the medal of honor beta installed I'm going to see if it holds up and make my decision about this laptop.

Wow and I've been worrying about my mid-70's during BFBC2 >.>"... I've also been noticing a trend where average temperatures over idle and load decrease over time. Maybe that's the case for you (as it seems to be) too.

And secondly, I've OC'd my 5650 to 640/950, but I still can't run BFBC2 without fps drops. Aren't there some who can play it on high with the stock clock? wth?

Finished applying the stuff last night, I put my computer on my desk and turned it on and let it sit a bit. The bottom gets hot because of the desk warms it up and no air flowing out... Its set to high performance and just doing my daily task.. My PC prob has been on for 10 minutes and I decided to take a quick snap.

Call this number 1-888-999-4747 , have someone sound agitated, and tell them some excuse besides it said it was supposed to come today, as to why you actually needed it urgently. An example would be like I use it for business(gets you more money) or I need it for college because im leaving tomorrow(gets you less money). At the end when they say oh sorry, you gotta step it up and be like is their compensation for my inconvenience. She'll offer you 50 refund. Ask for more but in a range thats reasonable. I asked for 100$ considering I didn't pay for 2day shipping. But also make up a good excuse for why you want more. Like its going to cost you a presentation at work or a day off to accept the shipment. Have fun. =)

Edit: oh and during the introduction part be like I'm thinking about canceling this order and buying something from bestbuy.

Edit: Be very nice and patient, until they are about to hang up then sound agitated. =)

Was there a temperature improvement before and after the thermal paste application dcghz?

I think the thermal paste use by 4saken didn't really improve it drastically. Maybe a 2-3C difference but not much difference from the thermal paste by the manufacturer.

okay tried that.. spoke to someone for like 20 minutes and nothing..tried the school thing.. tried the return thing.. nothing! dang it! all they said was sorry and call fedex to set up notifications so that you know it's close by. i don't think setting up notifications will help me.. They did assure me that it would be taken care of in 24 hours so mark your clocks... we better get new updates.
